Well, I’m American from the (main land) and I lived In Honolulu from 2005 to 2014 next to Ala Moana Mall. Moved to Miami (experienced all that) and will be returning back to Honolulu (where I belong). The first thing I will tell you, RESPECT of the culture and nature is HUGE over there. Because that place is small you can drive around the Island in 3 hours. and your reputation can be ruined quick. You run into the same people all the time. Meaning, you may not know them, but you have seen them before. #2 It’s America true. However, your not running anything over there. Meaning mainland type of views or “ways” hmm. I would say if you plan on moving there. 2 years is usually the cut off whether if your going to make it or want to stay or not. You may start to get “island sickness”. Either your gonna love it or hate it. You have to really embrace the outdoors and recognize that things don’t move as fast as you may be accustomed to New York’s, LA’s, or Miami’s of the mainland. And everything generally goes on during the day. Not much of a nightlife outside of Waikiki and you could just snap your finger and that’s the size of it.. It’s very slow and boring. And somewhat behind in times. THATS WHY I LIKE IT. Is there reverse racism over there? sure. You’ve may have heard. I’m a bro, in some cases I was accepted in more arenas than my Caucasian brethren were. (Nobody talks about that.) So that can be “eye opener” to some also. Living somewhere and visiting somewhere. Is two different things. Probably one of the more beautiful and safe places I’ve lived. Expense wise? If your from New York, you won’t be sticker shocked. Maui is the. Prettiest I would say. Kauai is magical, beautiful and green and the big island where Kona (Iron Man) and Hilo are is totally different. The Hawaiians are very family oriented people and therefore it’s a very safe place to raise a family. Little to no crime, outside of getting your bike stolen, not much going on. It’s a real nice place and the fact that it’s not landlocked it can’t be ruined. It truly is Paradise. Mahalo

You are right in commenting on there being a Polynesian vibe. 17 January 1893 saw the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Queen Lili'uokalani sadly abdicated to spare her Hawaiian people bloodshed. Hawaii is a part of our Polynesian islands. I always encourage people to find out more about the history and indigenous people of any place they visit, they way we can all be more respectful and mindful when visiting 😍

FYI....Hawaii is the Only state to grow/harvest coffee/macadamia nuts. The "cavern" you walked thru @ Diamond Head/11:30 is, in actuality, lava tube made when Diamond Head was being formed. In the Hawaiian language, Diamond Head is referred to as Le'ahi(forehead of the ahi/yellowfin tuna) or Kaimana Hila. Between 1969-73, Diamond Head was the site of the Diamond Head Crater Festival, featuring hippy counter culture arts, crafts & food. But the main attraction was the music, which featured bands such as Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Doobie Bros., Cheech & Chong and local artists such as Cecilio & Kapono & Makaha Sons of Niihau

When I lived in Hawai`i and I went on vacations to Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Florida to New York City ... I noticed they treated me more stand offish when they knew I was an American, but when they found out I was from Hawai`i, it was like I was treated as their best friend. It must be most people don't think of Hawai`i to be much a part of the USA but somewhere exotic (which it is). The best beach I found while living in Hawai`i was in Kailua. I left in 1992 and I know things have changed, I'm wanting to go back but don't know when. Still the most beautiful place I have visited/lived and the water is such a beautiful blue that I can't be describ because of how beautiful it is. Been living on O'ahu for almost a decade. Went to school at UH Manoa and now live on the west side in Kapolei. I'm originally from California and Hawai'i has always felt like a special place. I think saying its "another country" is one way to put it but no where else in the world compares to it. Hawai'i has its pros and cons but most things you mentioned in this video are correct. Another huge aspect about being in Hawai'i is the HISTORY of how people came to be in Hawai'i and if you live here and visit is a must to know. Particularly, plantation culture, sugarcane economy and the migrations of all groups of people to Hawai'i ; Filipinos, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, etc. I say this because not everyone in Hawai'i is technically "Hawaiian" and has its own history to it in itself. The other is the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the way everything went down. A lot of this is overshadowed by tourists and the economic focus of Hawai'i being tourism. I say this because it takes time to learn these things and people here want to share, teach and "talk story" with you about how things came to be, because respect of the aina (land) and the people is very important and sometimes can be forgotten by visitors because of the filter of "America's Tropical Paradise".

21:17 - 21:32 "Walking around the streets of Honolulu at night . . . colorful . . . makes you want to be outside." "DEFINITELY a place you wanna be at after dark . . . beautiful." Not mentioned, but a reassuring plus: it's SAFE.
"Mahalo" for your report, 'Delightful Travelers.' Your enthusiasm is infectious. You two are so stoked [ed. - for good reason; AND as you said three times]; and clearly soaking in the 'Aloha Spirit.' Incomparable, Utopia-level weather. Some of the best scenery. And a friendly, easy-going, ethnically-diverse populace, attired appropriately and comfortably in casual wear sometimes with a nod towards first inhabitants, pre-statehood. . . . I've enjoyed Hawaii immensely -- as evidenced by visiting, enthusiastically visiting, at least 20 times over the decades. Hope you'll come back too!"
This video visit is invigorating for Islanders who've moved to the mainland, primarily due to a local economy heavily reliant on one factor / industry -- tourism -- that got hit hardest during the pandemic, the stratospheric cost of living plus a spoilment of the seemingly unstoppable invasion of the streaming-in homeless. While not regretting their grand exits, those viewing these lovingly assembled 22 minutes can't help but feel induced tinges of homesickness.
Now, for 'first timers;' or those 'on the fence' about crossing the Pacific to experience the islands, this video introduction is definitely upbeat and promising. And accurate.
Not covered here yet impossible to avoid 'negatives' begin with the horrendous traffic, perhaps worst in U.S. plus a history of corruptness in local politics. Those factors combined over the past quarter century to burden residents with the loss of long-overdue, perpetually promised light rail system whose endless, amateurishly, shamelessly administered cost overruns are in the billions; ALL for a system that's eventually to end up as a shadow of the original length and strategically well-thought-out locations.
I close with an upbeat and sincere: "Welcome home, Anna and Trevor! Aloha."

I'm an American who has traveled around a lot of this country and has gone abroad several times to various other countries. Traveling to Hawaii feels like being in America, to me. It definitely has its own distinct culture, but many places in America have their own cultures, too, so that's not so unusual. The culture shock when going to Hawaii is minimal. There's no language barrier, there's no exchange rate to think about, our cellphones work seemlessly, our drivers licenses and insurance policies are valid and easy to use, the road signs and traffic rules are the same, the laws are generally the same, we know exactly where, when and how to pay for things, our bank cards have no issues, we know what numbers to call in an emergency, no limit on how long we can stay, etc, etc...
There's so many things to consider when going to a foreign country that, as Americans, we just don't have to worry about when we go to Hawaii. For these reasons, it can never feel like going to a different country, to me.

Homeless populations, feces on the street, while we were there, we had to out run and hide in a hotel, an active shooter. The beach is small and very narrow. There's some parts that you don't even feel like you're in a tropical environment. We went to the North Shore and absolutely fell in love. That to me is Hawaii. The beaches elsewhere are gorgeous.

I had no idea about the brewing neighborhood, but we went to the Kaka’ako farmers market and got the best mochi. Hawaii is definitely more expensive than even most of California. @@bw5911 Nope, learn customary & codified international law. We gained international sovereign recognition in 1843 & became the first “non European” (their way of saying non-white) members of the “Family of Nations” (the precursor the the UN). 50 years later the US violated numerous international laws, illegally invaded our country, conspired with and aided insurgents in an illegal overthrow. In order to annex a sovereign country both parties must sign a treaty of annexation “not while under duress” wherein one party relinquished its sovereignty to the other… we never signed a treaty relinquishing our sovereignty to the US or anyone, therefore we remain a sovereign country, albeit OCCUPIED by the US for 130 years and counting. Even if we HAD signed a treaty, it would be null and void as an armed invading army marching to our palace and imprisoning our Queen EASILY would have constituted signing under “duress”. The US claims it used a joint resolution to annex the Hawaiian Kingdom, but a joint resolution is a domestic act of U.S. congress, it is unilateral and most important it has no power or jurisdiction beyond the borders of the US, so it doesn’t have the ability to annex foreign countries. That would be like China passing a domestic law saying it now owns the US lol. The US knows this is illegal, that’s why when they used a joint resolution to acquire Texas they knew it was invalid, this is why they had to later include Texas in the Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty with Mexico. The US tried this illegal act with us too, tried to falsely annex us with a joint resolution because they planned to try to force a treaty on us later, but we’re a neutral country AND most importantly our people petitioned and fought it. Every expert ON annexations & international law that has looked into our case has agreed that the US never annexed us and we continue to be a sovereign country, even the permanent court of arbitration in The Hague confirmed that we continue to be a sovereign country. And now we have multiple international law organizations and political scientists working with or who have joined our legal team to get the US out, and foreign US consulates in our country to close after requesting they look into the matter and then determining that we remain a sovereign country and they were violating international law being a US consulate in our Kingdom. Even the US has admitted it acted illegally. Then President Cleveland admitted the US’s actions were an “act of w*r” (sorry can’t type the word, the comment will be deleted sometimes) and you may want to read the US “apology resolution”. So no, we are not and never have been part of the US.
