This has got to be the best Pleasure Island scene in Pinocchio history! It's creative, it's fun, and it's amazing! Usher did a fantastic job, he played an eerie villain!
In the book Pinocchio there Is no Pleasure Island but a Place named "il Paese dei balocchi" meaning "Toys'Town". I could read the book in its original languange.
Well he gave Stromboli a warning that he wasn’t allowed in Pleasure Island, Stromboli ignored him and then started having the dummy growl in his face. And honestly somebody needed to put Stromboli in his place
They are! At least this version isn't as scary as the Disney version where they smoked and transformed. Instead this is a more family friendly version where they get onto a coaster, but is still a little bit of suspense involved.
ztslovebird I didn't know that but yes this one wasn't as scary as the 1940 version. I bet it came out as part of the original film's 60th Anniversary.
+ztslovebird The songs in this movie are almost all from the Disney broadway production of My Son Pinocchio so that's why they are all pretty good. EDIT* I just realized your comment was almost a year old lol.
Daniel Johnson Oh. I didn't realize they were from a Broadway show. They do feel more theatrical than TV-ish. Was the Stromboli song from the show, too?
Ricarus Dogbe “My last moment of screen time and I’m gonna milk _every_ second of it! Hope you guys enjoyed my 80s Michael Jackson imitation. Goodbye!”
I remember being 5 and falling in love with Usher before knowing who he was/hearing his music bc of this movie, lmao. I was obsessed, I had it on VHS and would rewind his part at least 3 times. A BEAUTIFUL MAN !!!!!!!
Well, here's the difference: children don't know how to run any amusement park or participate in the purpose of Pleasure Island in the first place; besides, what he means when he forbids adults is parents, adult guardians, or *any* adults who have *authority* over children and tell them what to do or what not to do.
Well the coachman in the animated Disney movie is as adult and so are the workers. In this case however I think he’s meant to be a teenager Usher started his career as a teen in the 90s when this movie came out. His voice sounds higher than the adults. He looks young as well about 17-19. I always thought since seeing the animated film that Pleasure Island is run on dark magic. All the people who work for it are demons or bad fairies it’s how they’re able to lure the bad kids and turn them into donkeys.
That ending bit where you have that revelation that pleasure island isn't the perfect children's paradise that it's made to seem and usher and his crew just come outta nowhere to end the scene used to give me such chills as a kid.
@wickedfeylady Yeah, it seems like Pinocchio stories have a lot of colorful villains , yet the Ringleader/ The Coachman (Basically, the guy who runs Pleasure Island) is one that we never learn much about, I'd imagine he could have a pretty interesting backstory.
Yes, this is one of my favourite Disney version of the retelling of Pinocchio through Geppetto's eyes because I like very much the variation of Pinocchio's theme because it is too sentimental and make us understand the very meaning of parenthood hidden in this musical. I was 15 when I saw this movie for the first time and I cried seeing this part and the final part. It's very touching in every way!
I don’t care how cheesy people thought this movie was, I LOVED it! Everyone sang so well, including Drew. I even bought the soundtrack back in the day 😁 Will always be a favorite ❤️
FreakDaMIghet Yup! ^.^ I watched it as a kid and initially didn't like it because it wasn't the cartoon, but as I continued to watch it, the movie's irresistible charm sucked me in! ^.^ I might get it on DVD and force my family to watch it! XD
It was at this moment that I fell in love with Usher. XDDD Seriously, as a kid, after seeing him perform this song (especially the dancing!), I had the biggest crush on him for a while.
this proves that no matter how silly the song usher can sing almost anything and make it sound good. even though i actually love this song and i've seen the movie a million times.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Especially the smug way Usher sings the song's final verse in that scene, he might as well have said to him, "You're too late, he's ours now! Ha ha ha!"
FilmmakeroftheFuture “My last onscreen moment and I’m gonna milk EVERY second of it. Hope y’all enjoyed my 80’s Michael Jackson imitation, everyone. Goodbye!”
+Justus White I know right, the coachman when he says as boys and he has that scary face scares me. I was dreaming of FNAF talking to Foxy until he showed up doing that face scaring both me and Foxy. I woke up after that.
amanogirl1 For me, the nightmare fuel is when Lampwick turns into a donkey while crying out for his mother. Just.......(shudder). Yet I still watched it every day when I was a kid.
Yeah, Usher also looks so devil in the final part of this clip and I consider very tragic this last moment, but he did a great performance with this song. I have bought the cd on ebay: here, it wasn't so expensive. I love all songs!:)
I tell you what I love roller coasters, darts, pool, food/desserts and night shows but I would not want to smash windows, drink beer, smoke or go to a "rough house". I will always do my work before I entertain myself and I enjoy living with my parents from time to time.
I was watching the intro scene to this and I was thinking "Is anyone on Pleasure Island even aware that freaking USHER is right there?! I mean seriously, I don't think their even stopping once to even LISTEN to him!"
Yes, in fact you see that Pinocchio, after Pleasure Island tragedy, had tried to save his father when he was a donkey: this unselfish act washes away his donkey exterior and he becomes again a wooden boy; then, when he and Geppetto are reunited, they both find out a mutual love uniting them and they forgive each other for their faults.
THIS version used to be my number one nightmare as a kid. Not the Disney version. This is the first time I've seen this movie in 14 years,THAT's how scared I was of any version of Pinocchio. Looking back now I find the Disney version a bit scarier, but still, not the best way to be introduced to Usher. 8C
It's true! This movie makes you enter in a sentimental dimension and you forget, for example, if you have had a sad day in your real life or a problem with someone. You can also identify with Geppetto and Pinocchio and how they find out a truthful love: the part when they are in the whale made me cry a lot the first time I saw the musical! It caught me so deeply to make me forget every shape of troubles or a hanging matter.:)
That is correct this is a retelling of the classic fairy tale. storybook story of Pinocchio. But in this version of the story this is about. the overlooked character of geppetto. one of the many important characters. So we get to learn about his side of the story.

I agree with you. Correct! I also say this fantasy musical has the moral that Geppetto learns what it's important being a father: if you look the crucial part is when he have Pinocchio in his arms when they are in the belly of the whale: it's just in this moment that he really loves him!!!:)

Usher did look young in this movie, it took me to watch the movie like 5 time b4 I knew that was him, just like Drew Carey. Honestly "Pleasure Island" sounded like an ectasy fantasy land-*wink* *wink* no place for kids!
The whole pinnocio story is creepy in general. A little boy who grows a hard wood nose when he lies, a place called pleasure island that turns little boys into asses that they sell, getting swallowed by a sperm whale? Idk, I think whoever wrote the story had other allegories.
Actually in the book, the reason why the young boys turn into donkeys is because of a disease that causes them to actually become one which means that they're "making jackasses out of themselves" and that the ringleader/Coachman, is Mestophales in disguise and that whilst they sing that song, they're actually "signing a contract" basically selling their souls to the devil and that the devil sorta collects by turning them into donkeys/jackasses and selling them to circuses and slave labor in salt mines. In this version of the film, Pinocchio is actually unlucky compared to the Disney version. In the Disney version, he escapes from the island with Jiminy Cricket in search for his father, but here, he's actually sold to a circus and is forced to do acrobatics, but injures himself when he sees the Blue Fairy in human disguise and is thrown into the ocean to drown and then his pelt/fur would become a drum. There is also several differences between these two and the book, is that it's not actually a sperm whale/white whale that eats them up, it's actually a giant shark (ironically which has asthma), but yea, the endings are the same - Pinocchio "dies", then gets brought back to life as a real boy.
The security of the stable is aweful. A keep out sign in a theme park where kids are encouraged not to obey what people tell them to do? Surely a lot of the boys got interested and looked inside.
There is also a difference between this musical and the animated feature of Pinocchio: you notice Pinocchio makes grow his nose to make the whale cough instead of setting a fire to make it sneeze.
I FELT THAT I'M BEING HYPNOTIZED BY THIS VERSION OF THE RINGMASTER COURTESY OF HIM BEING PORTRAYED BY THE DASHING SINGER USHER, LOL!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Even as a kid watching this and the 1940 classic, I knew there was something sketchy about Pleasure Island (even before they reveal the donkey transformations) but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
i love this movie. i still have it on dvd. and i thought usher was so sexy in this! hell,i still think he still is:) and i know this place is for boys but i wanted to go when i was little. i'd just avoid that one roller coaster. haha this is my favorite song in the movie and my little sister and i still sing this sometimes
This has got to be the best Pleasure Island scene in Pinocchio history! It's creative, it's fun, and it's amazing! Usher did a fantastic job, he played an eerie villain!

@@Italian-Royalist yeah, they renamed it pleasure island because of insecurity
@@lancasterblvd2010 i don't get your point.
@@Italian-Royalist I don’t think he was trying to make a point. He’s just giving you a FYI.
I also love how this is basically a male siren that distracts all the kids (and the viewers) from the true horrors that go on in Pleasure Island.

The 1940’s Disney version is worse.

Kind of ironic there's a "Do Not Enter" sign in Pleasure Island. It's quick, but it's there.
Yeah for a place that has no rules there certainly are a lot of rules
Gepetto would probably said when he got into that room, where did all the donkeys come from?
That's what Jimmy Cricket said in the 1940 version.
Yeah that is a flaw but it’s to prevent the boys from discovering their secret on the donkeys
Yeah.
The ringleader says no adults, yet he's one. :P

Usher Raymond is about 21 here... wow. And Brent Spiner (Star Trek's DATA) is about 51. Just amazingly talented men at any age.
