  • In 2018, our Big Bear lake level was down over 18 feet. The lowest it has been in over forty years. However, the problem of high and low lake level fluctuations was much worse during Big Bear’s early years. This short video looks at that time period, and also tells of what finally happened in the fight to stabilize the lake level at a higher level.
The images for this video were provided by the publications “Vanishing Big Bear-2”, “Big Bear Lake”, and from the historical collections of Rick Keppler, and Mark Durban.
“Vanishing Big Bear-2” is a hardbound 8.5” x 11” book. It is available online at www.fascinatingbigbear.com, and at www.amazon.com/Vanishing-Big-... at the following retail locations around the Big Bear valley:
    Butchers Block
Interiors - on Fox Farm Road
    Haus & Home Furnishings
    Bear Skins
    United Wood Craftsmen
    Big Bear Discovery Center
    Old Country Store
    Big Bear Sporting Goods
    Big Bear Lake Visitors Center

I have lived here in Big Bear and the Lake has been very very low since 2012. Born and raised in Southern California and there is no doubt that the weather has not even been close to what it was like in the 70's and before. Its now even surprizing when it rains or snows here. The value of homes especially the lake front homes have dropped. I also heard that in the 50's Big Bear had a chance to get the rights to the water and turned it down.

Thank you for sharing this video. I find myself fretting over the water levels, but your video helps put my mind at ease. We are having plenty of precipitation this winter and more to come. Travelling up to Big Bear tomorrow morning with my 83-year old dad. He's looking forward to driving my Jeep off-road (Holcomb Valley). : )

@@samsen3965 I was a baby when he adopted me. I recently learned who my biological parents are. My birth father is a professor of literature at an Ivy League university. My birth mother turns out to be a Hollywood personality. However, when she had me, she was 14, mother was a kid struggling against a domineering mother. A family member went public about my existence, and that's how I learned about my biological parents. The only person who knows who this celebrity is is one of the recurring stars from "Breaking Bad".

@@MattGrossChannel Wow...What a story behind one simple funny comment, or so I thought, I left earlier!
All I can say, Only 2 things:
1- As a core Democrat, I'm so glad "Abortion" was not an option for her at 14.
2- All I wish is to have a son like you.
I'm heading to BB lake (Seriously), right now. Have a good one and peace.

But they just completed the water recycling plant in Erwin Lake to clean waste water and pump it back into the lake. They said Full levels by 2025.

8:43 After 2019 and COVID-19 and whatnot, I don't know anymore as what a "Good Winter" means but I keep my fingers crossed as we're heading toward the Xmas and a New Year, Hopefully, a much better and a more Democratic one than the presiding and current, hard unprosperous years...

Yes , mostly the earth's weather is always changing.
I remember back in the late 60's through the 70's how the scientists and media tried to make us believe mot humans would die in the 80's from freezing to death due to a new ice age.

What is your point? I have seen the lake rise 8 feet in 8 hours. What is your point? It's not a natural lake, it's dammed.
