After owning all three, the one I decided to keep was the 600. All three are amazing in their own rite, and if you have the money, having the 650 and Sundaras as complimentary headphones would be ideal. For me however, I only wanted to keep one. Compared to the Sundara, I found the 600 to be more natural sounding, more rich in the mids (especially with vocals), similar levels of neutral, and much more dynamic (especially in the bass), at the cost of having less clarity, separation, soundstage, detail retrieval, and imaging capability in comparison. If all you're looking for is fine detail and nuances in your music, the Sundara is insanely good, however I personally value the dynamic capability and the incredible timbre/tonality of the 600 more. Compared to the 650, the 600 sounded less muffled/dark, and though the 650s warmer tonality sounded pristine on some tracks, on others it would make songs feel congested in a way, so I preferred to stick with the 600s more neutral tuning. That all being said, you can't go wrong with any of these options. If you own any of these, trust when I say you made a great purchase.
That's my 2 cents, have a great day

"at the cost of having less clarity, separation, soundstage, detail retrieval, and imaging capability in comparison." - I disagree. What you think you're hearing in the Sundaras in terms of stereo imaging (sound stage) and detail is simply more treble, and a very imbalanced one at that.

They both have their strengths and weakness, but I would agree with the OP the Sundara does have noticeably more sound stage, imaging and detail retrieval. Honestly a lot of headphone have better sound stage and imaging over the 600 series, which happens to be a fairly intimate headphones.

A lot of people regret getting rid of their HD600/650 series and end up buying another pair again. I've done it twice myself😀 I even know someone who has sold and bought the HD650 FOUR TIMES! There's so many "technically better" headphones on the market than the HD600/650, BUT at the end of the day music is all about Enjoyment. These scale really well, and with the "right" amp/dac some people (me included) find that there's simply no other headphones on earth that sound more pleasing to the ear, regardless of price. Also they have stood the test of time (decades!), I won't be surprised if 10 years from now a lot of people will still love and be talking about the HD600/650, while other ""superior" headphones on the market now will fade in oblivion.,

@@RealKyurem , the 650 sounds darker, meaning that if you listen to music for very long periods of time then your ears will thank you. And it has a tiny bit more bass presence. Having said taht the 600 doesn's sound bright at all, and I think more people find it to slightly more balanced. I personally don't think the Sundara's are even in the same league as the the HD600/650, I think the new lower price of the HD6XX's from the Drop has given people the false impression that they are 'entry' level headphones based on price alone, this is certainly not that case, the HD650 were Sennheiser's flagship headphone for many years, there is a reason they are such revered headphones that have stood the test of time. I have experience with a lot of headphones, and nothing I have come across thus far have the timbre and tonality of the HD600/650's, they are midrange beasts, the 650 can initially sound a little veiled but they are very balanced and full of subtle microdetails, I think a good headphone or speaker never wows you at it's first listen, and nor should it, they just do it right.

I got a new Sundara not long ago, and I picked up a Sennheiser 58x used as a different flavour of headphone. Even as the cheapest and least regarded of the 600 series, I think I prefer it. The Sundara has more detail but is less refined sounding. The Sennheiser tonality is just excellent, like musical honey in your ears. The Sundara is white sugar.

16:07 I'm so cautious whenever peeps on the internet say this about headphone treble. I think the dt1990 pro's treble traumatised me. Everyone on youtube was singing it's praise, the odd person was saying stuff like "hmm maybe it would be just slightly too bright for some people". When I got them, they had murder treble, kept them for 3 weeks, and never got used to it. Felt like jamming two iphone speakers next to my ears. Returned them. Now I associate the word "bright" with "kill your ears".

I have the Sundaras and HD600s... and here are my thoughts:
Comfort... right out of the box, the Sundaras are more comfortable to my big, egg-shaped head. The clamp force of the Sennies was stronger, on me.
I could care less about the aesthetics, but that's me.
    The sound... to me.
"fuller" sound with more bass on the Sundaras. The mids seem a bit more relaxed and warmer. The soundstage and imaging is definitely better than the 600s.
The 600s are "thinner" and more clinical. Very clear. Definitely more neutral but needed the bass boost feature on my Zed Dac V3 to fill in some mid and lower bass frequencies.
As sub $500 cans, they are both really amazing value.
I've had the Focal Clear and T+A Solitaire Ts... and they are both head a shoulders above the others in every way. BUT they are also multiples more expensive. SO, there's that.
Sound and pleasure is so subjective. Go listen to everything you can afford, and even stuff way above your budget so you can get a reference point and comparable. Listen to music you know really well and love. And try to listen back to back, if you can. Then pick what you like. Nothing else matters.
    Enjoy!!!

Everyone that want to compare the two... well don't ,because the sundara and hd600 are Nice together.
Just save a little more and get the two .
But if you absolutely can't afford the 2 ...
Take the hd600 since they are a jack of all trades everything sounds nice on the hd600 especially vocals tonality.
The sundara have a different tonality.
The vocals have more upper mid-range, treble energy to them . So the male vocals have less body.
That being said the vocals on the sundara are more impactfull ,they are a bit more present ( because of the "t,s")
The sundara is the king for ( rap, edm, techno, pop, synthe and even orchestra due to the layering ,the good separation of instruments and the Soundstage without omitting the trebles ..precise)
While the hd600 sounds good with ( rap,pop,....)
They shine for orchestra for a different reason.. the hd600 sounds more correct the instruments sounds how they should.
    The sundara is clinical .
    The hd600 is honest .
I would like to bring something else on the table before I forget.
Hifiman has poor qc ( quality control)
For example I had to replace my sundara after 1 year .luckily for me I had a warranty.
While the hd600 1 year and still no problem.
Yet there is a catch with the hd600..
If you use them a lot, I will have to change the pads on a yearly basis. 45 $/€ each year.
    And to finish.
Use them with an amp if possible.
They sound good out of a phone ,however ,i noticed the sundara sounded noticeably better.

Thank you for the comparison, great review! After hearing the Sundara and the HD660 I got the HD660. Never heard the HD600 nor HD650. Do you think the HD600 or the HD650 would make a significant difference to them (HD660)? Do you think these are side grade or downgrade or even upgrade to the HD660? It seems to me that there are many who idolize either the HD600 or the 650, but the HD660 seems to be the stepchild for most... Thanks

Hello, I used to own the 660 as well. Overall, the 660 is a very capable headphone, but I think to a degree, it is more different than similar from the 600 and 650, which are close to each other. Most people buy the 650 and 600 for their midrange and vocal performance, so if that's your cup of tea, the 600 and 650 are still the headphones to get. Although the 660S is technically superior to the 600 and 650. Hope this helps. I will see if I can bring the 660s back and audition it again. :)

I have all of them u can read my posts on Head fi forum . HD6 series are all organic smoother warmer headphones compare to Sundara . Between the HD 600 ,650,660s there are a lot to be said and compare but if u want me to tell it with some words then HD 600 is the most clear colder , HD 650 is the smoothest warmer of them all , and HD 660s is in the middle not cold like 600 not warm like 650 also HD 660s has the best imaging and separation of them all ( in the same league with Sundara) . So in my opinion there is no upgrade or downgrade , its all about your taste . Sundara for soundstage clearness imaging sepperation speed but colder and with artificial metalic feeling . HD 660s if u want something like Sundara but more smooth more organic with smaller in your head soundstage but also great imaging sepperation and speed.... And Last one HD 650 for the smoothest warmer of them all and 600 for the smallest soundstage and something natural and cold.
If i have to choose ONE then HD 660s because it has everything , and if i have to chose 2 of them Sundara and HD 650 because they are the most different .

I don´t know, I tested the Sundara and really wanted to like it. But it just wasn´t for me. I guess one gets dissapointed if a hyped product just doesn´t deliver. True, you can get used to the sound and try it with different amps or whatever. But that alone rules the headphone out for me. I don´t want to get used to something to start liking it, don´t want to play around with differnt equipment to start liking it. And if I just look at the vast amount of used cans offered everywhere, I think the Sundara is a pass.

We compared 2 Sennheisers in this price range to 1 Hifiman in this price range. The Dark Horse that no one talks about is the other Hifiman in this price range: the HE560 v4. The Sundara beats it in natural tonality and soundstage. In my opinion, the HE560 v4 beats the Sundara in everything else: impact, transients, deep bass, clarity, detail, accuracy, power, "meat on the bones", punch, slam, dynamics, imaging. Why is the HE560v4 a dark horse? Because the version before it had some issues they fixed up but it tainted the name of the 560, and because reviewers didn't take notice that it needs a better amp to work right. If you're interested in the 560v4, which you should be, just study up on reviewers and forums to find a good amp for it. That's not a con or disadvantage, because it will actually lead you into selecting a better amp for the same price you would have got a mediocre amp.
    Cheers, enjoy your music!

Sundaras are good value, especially if you want to get into planars. Exceptional detail retrieval and tuning but they are really better at orchestral, classical, and jazz, and they are not ideal for rock music. At least not compared to my DT 1990s which far outclass any of these headphones in punch, slam, and dynamics.

HD600 is stronger in microdynamic, much better timbre, and has more soul ultimately. You only touched Sundara's strengths, which is typical planar strength. But the Sundara is not a dynamic headphone. Feels flatter and harder to get emotion out of it.
And no, Sundara doesn't have more detail. Just that it throws detail at you more than the HD600. Just like all Hifimans. The HD600 is more subtle at showing off its details.

I've done it twice myself😀 I even know someone who has sold and bought the HD650 FOUR TIMES! There's so many "technically better" headphones on the market than the HD600/650, BUT at the end of the day music is all about Enjoyment. And with an amp/dac of their choice, some people (me included) find that there's simply no other headphones on earth that sound more pleasing to the ear, regardless of price.

DT 1990's are actually comparable to these in EU. Beyer missed the mark with US pricing which made them unpopular. Although it has a really serious 8k peak so it might be unusable without eq for some people but they still have a magic. Build is also phenomenal. Some say it's a budget Focal Clear.

I have both the HD600 & HD650 well over 10 years and many other headphones. I will say HD series is amp dependent. But, Been into the chifi iem scene last few years. I have well over a dozen iem's at this point. In my opinion I would say a $50 mele iem outperforms a HD series headphone. The musicality you can get for a Mele or Olina is astounding. If you move up to a monarch or clairvoyance the are superior to the HD series. But both the monarch and Clair are $700 bucks.

I am sort of in the same boat here. Been playing with Chi Fi IEM's but since I wear headphones 12+ hours per day for work and play I need a headphone to actually wear over the ear. Recently the Truth Ear Zero came out and it is quite amazing for $50. The bass slam and presence is up there with my Edition XS and this is with no tuning. I actually am finding I prefer the intimate sound stage it seems "easier" to listen to the details and get the feeling of the music. Music is being injected into you, rather than being absorbed... if that makes sense. You can tell these IEM's are not on the same level of detail retrieval and technicalities that the XS can offer or even the HD 560S. It is about the same resolution as DT 770 Pro 80ohm but holds together much better at higher volumes. It just makes me think... are IEM's really just the way to go here? A $50 IEM has me second guessing a $500 set of headphones with $150 amp.... I can drive this IEM with my iPhone. WTF
