Thank you so much for mentioning songs and their timestamp so we can have a better idea of how they compare to each other. MORE REVIEWERS NEED TO DO THIS.
I can't imagine paying that much for dynamic driver headphones. You will literally get better sound from the cheaper HD 599 or even the HD 560S. xD I'm so sorry you wasted your money. :( When you get that high up in pricerange, it's literally better to look at planar magnetic headphones. : / Dynamics are the masters of budget headphones, planar magnetics are the masters of consumer-grade sound quality... Electrostatics are the masters of sound, just, supreme superiority in sound, but they are the most expensive headphones in existence, lol. XD So basically, anything surpassing 200 dollars, is planar magnetic territory, if you want to use your money wisely...
Hi, Just bought new HD600 2019, I was thinking Sundara or HD600 but I was turn off by bad HiFiMan quality control. I've had HD6XX (little to dark/soft/veiled/boring), HD58X (much more engaging that HD6XX but they were fatiguing to me). I hope HD600 will be headphones for me. I just want a little more clear headphones that HD6XX with great midrange. I love your reviews btw.
@@detectiveapollo i like the HD600 more. They are more clear and more engaging. HD650 are more warm, they sound muffled to me, also i find them to be boring
The price difference between the HD600 and Sundara is just 39€ here (thats about 42$). If the Sundaras really do have an edge on the HD600 in terms of detail, separation, clarity and soundstage I will buy them.
Sundara's change in sound characteristics after listening for 6 months is mesmerizing. I don't remember the sound, but I sure remember how I felt. Cornfield Chase by Zimmer was ok at first listen 2-3 days after purchase and I remember feeling 350$ for "this"... Hmm... But, 6-8 months down the line when I heard it again, I got goosebumps....
In always check headphones also by using a sine wave generator and manually sweep to find irregularities. Most often anything identified this way will also show up when listening to actual music and becomes fully explainable.
I'm reminded quite a bit of DankPods' presentation style when he's being informative/teaching the viewer. Visuals focus on what you're talking about (headphones, albums, funny images) and the way you talk is straightforward with tasteful humor, effective transitions, and obvious passion. Informative video and subscribed.
I’ve had the Sundara, Ananda, and HD 600, and the HIFIMANs both are made for larger heads than mine, especially the Anandas, which could use the nuggets on the headband. I found the 600’s to have more body in the sound but kind of smooth out the highs, where the Sundaras are less thick in the midbass and mids but have a crisper treble which adds to separation and detail; I notice left/right panning and backup rhythm instrumentation more on the Sundara; those little “chuka chuka” guitar embellishments I’ve never heard before on the HD 600s reveal themselves. I don’t consider IMO a matter of getting more/less of the same qualities when comparing the Sundara and Ananda - I think they sound different from one another.
I recently got another set of the Sundaras to try/compare, and the things I liked about the first pair I tried were absent; the crispness, detail and clarity were gone. Same rig used - keeping Anandas. Was going to try the Focal Clear but I kept on hearing about the squished soundstage which is a deal breaker for me, and also why the HD600’s went away.
I agree fully i use them and its like u said, Now i mostly use HD660s that to me are tha perfect balance between my SUndara and HD600. They have the body and vocals of HD 600 but with an amazing imaging ,seperation , but again smaller soundstage than Sundara.
I really like the way you did this review. Great comparison. I enjoy the way you speak clearly, reference some songs to provide specific examples to your opinion, as well as an EQ suggestion! Keep up the good work. Liked and subscribed
7:31 perfect reference from one of my fav albums of all time, and the exact experience im looking for. im officially convince to get the Sundara's....... on my wishlist bc i cant afford either at the moment
If you want the most flexibility (in terms of amps) and want something a little warmer, go for the HD600. If you're looking for a slightly colder sound with a little more slam, go for the Sundaras.
I find in the grand scheme of headphones, these two out of a decent source are actually quite similar overall.. there's like 2dB more in the mids from 1-3khz in the 600, few less in the high treble and the subbass. The drivers in the Sundara do have more technical superiority for distortion and stuff and you can tell especially in the bass where dynamics have the most distortion. The HD600's sound like a very good older studio monitor, whereas the Sundara has something extra filled out on either end, a touch less mids, but with that AMT1 kind of detail. Both were very good and if you gave it a day between them and just listened to music, you'd probably find both just as enjoyable. I use the 600 for general use and Sundara for more critical listening. Both are neutral in tuning. Sundara is actually really close to the HE-1 tuning but without the bass extension/lift, and of course it can't come close to the electrostatic detail and general refinement, even if it takes a huge step over dynamics for those aspects. 600 are better "lifestyle" headphones for youtube, podcasts, general use. Sundara is better critical listening where busy, complex, loud passages like parts of pink floyd or EDM take a massive step up in grace without it all mashing up into pink noise between everything in comparison. Electrostatic is another step up from planars for technical prowess but the very best planars are fairly close, and tuning on Estats are usually.. questionable, beyond the HE-1 and maybe SR-Omega, HE-90 and HE-60. Some get closer than others but L300's are just kinda wonk. SR-Lambda or SR-X mk3 are somehow better than their new ones.
Ahh It hav not helped me :( I can get same price hd600 (marble from Irland version) with perfect shape +balanced silver cord or almost new sundara. Im listening to epic music/ soundtracks/ electronic/ metal/ rock/ hip hop/ trance. Cant compare them because have money for 1 of them What would you suggest? I think this is good chance to get OLD 600 which are looking like new...
I’m debating between Sundara and HD660S. Now that 660S2 came out, the original ones got a price cut, and they sell for just under $300. Are they better than Sundara?
@@chuckolatte600 True, the new one is much better. Deeper bass, more pronounced trebles and the soundstage is a bit wider. But it’s $600 and I don’t think it’s worth the price. For that price or for $100 more you can get a better buy. Because HD660S(1) went down in price, I got them. 😝
@@chuckolatte600 Do u have HD660s for long time ? Because i have HD600 , 650,660s for many Years and i love all of them for Different reasons, HD600 are the clearer of them all , HD650 are the smoothest more dark of them all and HD 660s are a bit clearer than 650 but losing the smoothness but what 660s have that 600 and 650 dont is amazing imaging ( better than Sundara i know have them also) and 660s are Fast really fast close to Sundara Fast ( but they dont have low end texture like Sundara). About HD660s2 these are something way different and honestly its like HD 560s and 660s make a baby ... They Lose the warm low end but have more extension on bass like 560s but smoother highs like 660s and all that by keeping the imaging and fast tight sound ...
@@chuckolatte600 Thats what people said exactly when HD600 came out and already had 580... You are wrong , HD660s are amazing headphones like 600 and 650... It was more honest to say that in your personal opinion u prefer 600 and thats it, i can understand and respect that.
@@Marian1st. The new one is not Much better is just different , It does have deeper bass but it doesnt have the Warm bass like 660 600 650 have , Also treble is not more pronounced like 600, Soundstage is exactly like 660s not more not less ( honestly all HD 6 line is close to soundstage) . People saying 650 are better than 600 or 650 are better than 660s doesnt make any sense ,its all about taste and honestly all of them share the HD 6 signature with some small differences . People having all of them and really listen them will say to u that ... HD 600 are the most clear in your head vocals, 650 are the warmer smoother and 660s in the midle with better imaging and separation, 660S2 are like 560s sub bass and cold charachter down their but with Smoother highs . Chuckolate does make amazing reviews and 90% of the time is correct , but the love he has for 600 ( that i understand) blind his opinion for the 650 and 660s.
Not sure, haven't tried the HE400i 2020 yet. Based off of what I've heard though, I think those would be the more "fun" HP since they are more V-shaped
Which one of the two would you prefer for rock and metal? I currently have the 560s cuz i couldn't stand the muffled 6xx sound. However, the timbre is fantastic on them. Is the 600 or sundara a good option for an engaging experience with metal and rock?
I have all of them, Like u said HD 6 series are warm headphones ( not muffled) . HD 560s are close to Sundara Sound and i think u gone like them more , but its not day and night difference. HD 600 are warmer than 560s and they have a bit less low end but to me they have more capable driver more refined sound, If u are ok with Small soundstage in your head Vocals then go with HD600 , if u like more Open sound and more seperation go with Sundara. U have to also know that Sundara have a lot of Quality problems , My 2 units had problems, not working cable, pads have been opened after a small use , and left channel was lower on volume , All of those problems was solved under warrenty . But i had to tell u that .
@@chuckolatte600 I still love my Sundara agree on most that u said, U should also check the HD660S if u like warm sound. By the way because the Sundara Pads keep failing i bought the Beyerdynamic DT 770,990,1990 pads in Black Velur and with the stock Ring that original pads had, they fit perfect also they have bigger open for the ears very comfy .
The problem with the HiFiman headphone line is that they are hit and miss when it comes to quality control. They are ALL made in China versus the HD 600/650/660S/800S lines are all built in Sennheisers state if the art plant in Ireland. I’ve been using Sennheisers for 43 years and they were then, and still are, the best headphones you can buy for your money in my opinion. I’ve had many different models through the years and currently own HD600 and HD650 and am soon going to buy the best of all, HD800S. Audeze also make some great cans but in terms of comfort and more natural sound presentation I’d take the Sennheisers hands down. I’m not a fan of Focal speakers or headphones either. Grado headphones are interesting, but they are brighter sounding which makes them fatiguing to listen to for longer listening sessions. AKG and Beyer Dynamic headphones are not my cup of tea either. Stay headphones are very impressive though, but quite difficult to drive properly. I worked in the ahi end Audio/Video market for 10 years so I’ve had the opportunity to listen to many different headphones. In the end though, you have to trust YOUR ears and go with whatever suites your fancy.
I'm with you- I think...as long as the chasis is durable , I'm not terrible concerned with the materials used there- at least, the difference between plastic and medal is not a deal breaker.
Do you need any other hardware for the sennheiser if I just want to use them with iPhone and Nintendo Switch? Other than lightning adapter? You had mentioned an amp….
Really liked your review. You brought something else to this comparison. done by many but yours was really enjoyable to hear. I have the HD650 and really like the added bass response. I know this muddies up the midrange a little and there is not as much definition (the vocal can be a little affected in some places) but there is still plenty there and I love that added warmth and bass impact with what seems like no real cost. I would love to hear your HD650 vs Sundara comparison if such a comparison is worth doing. Thanks for doing this video. I am now +1 sub!
I'm new to the audiofile thing, confused on what to buy/start with: Sundara vs sennheiser hd 58x jubilee (I picked the Sundara) Sound blasterx g6 vs schiit hel vs Audient EVO 4 (*need your help here*) Thanks
So I've never listened to the g6 nor the EVO 4, but it seems like the EVO 4 focuses a lot on recording quality. Unless you're doing professional instrument recording or voiceover, I don't find it necessary. The g6 seems to be geared a bit more towards portability. That said, both of those are cheaper than the Hel. So there you go: Hel for quality assurance, g6 for portability, and EVO 4 for professional recordings. Take it with a grain of salt though.
@@avocadomangos I personally have the Hel and boy don't sleep on it just cause it's labeled as "gaming" that just means it has a mic input. The Hel has POWER to drive literally anything. I had mine for a year now and LOVE the thing! Haven't had the need to upgrade to something more powerful yet.
What takes the crown at this 250-500.00 price point for neutrality, detail, and soundstage depth/breadth? I have a Heresy and E30, and I want to use this for critical listening/studio mixing (in a noise controlled environment). Big bonus points if they make it seem like sound is coming from outside the plane of the headphones.
Hi there, nice review. Do you think that the slight sharpness of the vocals and treble could be mitigated by using an amplifier that leans just ever so slightly towards the warmer side?
hello friend. for a beginner audiophile you think sundara or hd600. i love to listen to artists like imagine pink floyd (i think u know what i mean). but i also love my edm well, more i love aphex twin. now which do you recommend, im not a basshead, and thats why detail and and higher quality mids/treble is what i need. thanks for your content bro
For a beginner, I think a safer "vanilla" choice like the HD600 is the better pick. From there you'll know what you want more of and what you want less of!
Couldn't you just EQ the bass extension into the 600? I've got a EQ profile that ads a 10db boost to my 600, tastefully so it doesn't distort, for when I'm too lazy to put on my Audeze.
@@bitterbuffalo8997 cool, thanks for that. I use metal571s EQ profile for the HD650 and really like it. I also used oratory1990s profile for the 600 but actually prefer it without his EQ settings.
Perhaps, but I personally prefer leaving the HD600 stock. Their lack of subbass kind of help give the rest of the frequency a chance to shine. Plus, I usually don't like using EQ to add anything, just remove.
@@Tripokaridos22 The Hifiman Arya has extremely flat sub bass extension, and detailed and fast too with a tight slam that doesn't leak into mid bass, and the mid bass doesn't leak into the mids. It's of course at a premium for 1500 USD, totally worth the money though if you can afford it. It even works very well with EQ and you could add even more bass to it if your DAC has good hardware EQ.
But for me the Big Crown belongs to Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro from back in the old days of year 1981,thats nearly over 40 years old now,and that is 3 years before Koss Porta Pro come out, that is my second favorite, before the Sennheiser HD 600 thats is my third choice :)
My Sundara 1 year old, change pads 2 times the one glue problem the other cuts on pu leather, Cable broke also ... HD650 all these years nothing at all
I personally like the shape of the Sennheiser ear cups but as far as comfort .. I guess if you like a vice they're fantastic. The foam with the Sennheiser is mediocre at best. I had to do the hack where you extend the sennheiser's all the way out and physically bend them out with your thumbs. The Sundara's look more cushy, but I'm not a huge fan of a circle considering my ears aren't circles. Also, I prefer 100% velour for breathing. However, I heard that the Sundara's sound a lot better on tube amps so it's the exact opposite of what you're saying. Maybe I need to take a pass and look into the Edition XS limited edition.
There are a lot of chance that when you review HifiMan Edition X v2 and compare to Sundara and HD600 you will crown new king. I don't think is best bang for buck but used you can grab for somewhere around 700-800 USD. I did my luck and "steal" them for ~ 540 USD. You will not hear treble peaks, sibilants like on Arya or Ananda. My road for best neutral sounding headphones as an upgrade for HD6 series is end now. More concerning on DAC because HEX v2 are so easy to drive.
Maybe I'm spoiled cause I've been using the hd 598's for years which are super light and comfortable, almost feels like you're not wearing anything on your head. But I just got the sundaras and I can't stand the tight clamp force. I can't stand to wear them for more than 30 minutes.
I have the HD598, the HD6xx and I just bought the sundara a few days ago. While not as comfortable as the Sennheiser the Hifiman will loosen and they'll eventually feel better. Can't beat the HD598 though, so light, so comfortable...
@@astroman269 Yeah, I've been trying to stretch out the clamp force by placing them over my pc tower when I go to sleep every night. After several days of this they have loosened up a bit. Still not at the comfort I'd like, but it's not bothering me as much as it was. I actually ordered some 6xx's too to se which I like better. How is the 6xx comfort and sound compared to the sundaras?
@@ooooswain sound is different that's for sure. For comfort the Sennheisers are kings. While a bit heavier than the hd598, the hd6xx remain super light and comfortable. I find the sundara headband to be a bit wide. It helps distribute the weight but it also gets hot / itchy. Not too much of a problem. Also, I prefer the Sennheiser oval cup to the hifiman round ones. It does however, affect the sound signature and some manufacturers prefer one to the other. I can live with that. Though not as comfortable for me, I have worn the sundaras for hours and have not felt pain or anything like that. They just don't "disappear" like the Sennheisers do. As far as sound is concerned I do prefer the sundaras. Instrument separation is superior and clarity is a win. There is more detail, good bass while not being analytical. You do need a good amp/dac for it to shine. I tried them straight from my Macbook pro when first purchasing them and did not like the sound. At home when listening from my full setup it wins on the hd6xx. I used the hd6xx for years and loved them. I hope to say the same things of the the sundara as well in a few years. Overall this is just fun. They are both great for listening to the music you love. Happy listening!
That's funny. I find the HD560S (which is within the same product line as the HD598) extemely tight due to their clamp force and uneven pressure distribution.
After a couple of weeks of wearing the Sundara it has become more and more comfortable. I do feel like the HD6xx is still more comfortable overall but this is nitpicking. No issues whatsoever with the Sundara now. The problem with the usual 'comfort' evaluation out of the box is that it does not give a good representation of what it will be like after actual use. Manufacturers don't design this to be perfect out of the box but to be comfortable and reliable long term.
Sundara should be delivered to me within a few days. I've got an HE400i ver. 2020 some time ago as my first ever planar-magnetic headphone. I fell in love with them and the sound signature, and straight away decided that i want more. Just more of Hifiman's sound. So i went with the Sundara, although i was really tempted with an Ananda. Well, maybe someday. :) Great video, by the way. Really enjoyed the comparison. I've had HD660S's for some time and they were good, but i like HE400i more. That planar bass is something, man. And i'm not even a basshead.
I have owned Hd600 ,Hd660s and the sundara ,technical i feel like the sundara is superior, but for reasons I can't put my finger on, i have sold sundara and 600 after six months. I feel like 660 has more soul, while the sundara is like brain surgery where the subject survive like a zombie. I hope people find this useful:)
Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut. Which ones engage you, draw you into the music the most. You want to believe that the more expensive one should sound better or the one the reviewers gushed over is the best, but don’t fall into that trap.
@@Sathish-gm5hlYeah. Best I can describe is the Sundara is Electric, the 600 sounds vintage by comparison even though both are very neutral headphones. The distortion on the Sundara is way lower and subbass much better.
YYYYYYEAH I'd like that too lol. Maybe someday soon. If my channel becomes more reputable, I might be able to reach out to Zach and ask him to send review units my way (so I don't spend thousands of dollars on it lol).
there are exactly 2 reasons i hesitate to buy the Sundara. The phones don't turn to adjust to the angle of the head like most sennheiser's do. They're perfectly circular and therefore don't fit all ear types. My ears are on the bigger side, but more importantly, the tips or edges of my ears are unfolded (bit of a genetic deformity), so if headphones do not have enough ear space, i will experience incredible pain on the very tips of my ears after a few hours wearing them due to excessive friction.
Not sure if someone already mentioned this but the box is for the old version, the newer version had packaging I would consider significantly worse than the Sundara. The Sundara packaging is as much better than the new packaging as the old packaging is to the Sundara, maybe even more.
Seinhieser is unfortunately selling off their audio headphone division ( sad days indeed ) but ..they completely missed the boat on Planars ..no product what so ever..which is shameful ..because they know how to make freak’n good headphones ...every 5 years or so. As for me , I’ve got the HD650’s and have the new 400 2020 edition coming in soon. This should be interesting.
Your HD 600 is exactly like mine which is about 20+ years old. Your review is on time for me to try out a new sound at budget. Thx.
Glad to hear it!
Hd6 series never brake i have my 600.mamy years and honestly. I use them more than anything. Now i use Sundara and 660s

I can't imagine paying that much for dynamic driver headphones.
You will literally get better sound from the cheaper HD 599 or even the HD 560S. xD
I'm so sorry you wasted your money. :(
When you get that high up in pricerange, it's literally better to look at planar magnetic headphones. : /
Dynamics are the masters of budget headphones, planar magnetics are the masters of consumer-grade sound quality... Electrostatics are the masters of sound, just, supreme superiority in sound, but they are the most expensive headphones in existence, lol. XD
So basically, anything surpassing 200 dollars, is planar magnetic territory, if you want to use your money wisely...
@@MyouKyuubi cool story bro ..
Hi,
Just bought new HD600 2019, I was thinking Sundara or HD600 but I was turn off by bad HiFiMan quality control. I've had HD6XX (little to dark/soft/veiled/boring), HD58X (much more engaging that HD6XX but they were fatiguing to me). I hope HD600 will be headphones for me. I just want a little more clear headphones that HD6XX with great midrange.
I love your reviews btw.
How was it? Been thinking whether to get the 600 or 650.
@@detectiveapollo i like the HD600 more. They are more clear and more engaging. HD650 are more warm, they sound muffled to me, also i find them to be boring
@@MrLimaify thank you for your response :)
Wait, you mean that they did physically "warmed up" or are you just get used to then and started paying attention to details?
In always check headphones also by using a sine wave generator and manually sweep to find irregularities. Most often anything identified this way will also show up when listening to actual music and becomes fully explainable.

Interesting. I oughta take a look at his videos then
I’ve had the Sundara, Ananda, and HD 600, and the HIFIMANs both are made for larger heads than mine, especially the Anandas, which could use the nuggets on the headband.

7:31 perfect reference from one of my fav albums of all time, and the exact experience im looking for. im officially convince to get the Sundara's....... on my wishlist bc i cant afford either at the moment
please explai why Sundaras tube amp selection is limited?
not all tube amps are compatible with planar magnetic HPs
thank you for the review. i am on tight budget, so can only choose one either hd600 or sundara
If you want the most flexibility (in terms of amps) and want something a little warmer, go for the HD600. If you're looking for a slightly colder sound with a little more slam, go for the Sundaras.
He is one of most refreshing headphone reviewers on youtube
Cant compare them because have money for 1 of them

Hi! For you, most complete headphone under 600?
For listening and enjoy music. Only.
NOWADAYS, the HD660S2. But I'd still prefer owning an HD600 and a Sundara if I had the choice
I’m debating between Sundara and HD660S.
Now that 660S2 came out, the original ones got a price cut, and they sell for just under $300.
Are they better than Sundara?
Nope. I'd avoid the HD660. There's a reason they came out with the S2 only after a few years haha
@@chuckolatte600 True, the new one is much better. Deeper bass, more pronounced trebles and the soundstage is a bit wider.

@@Marian1st. Sundara 2020 or HE400i 2020? Just looking for some fun for gaming ambient noises/music.
I think the Sundaras are more "engaging" because of their coldness and snappiness. Honestly, rock/metal are my favorite genre on the Sundaras

Perhaps one day
I'm new to the audiofile thing, confused on what to buy/start with:
Sundara vs sennheiser hd 58x jubilee (I picked the Sundara)
Sound blasterx g6 vs schiit hel vs Audient EVO 4 (*need your help here*)
Thanks
So I've never listened to the g6 nor the EVO 4, but it seems like the EVO 4 focuses a lot on recording quality. Unless you're doing professional instrument recording or voiceover, I don't find it necessary.
The g6 seems to be geared a bit more towards portability. That said, both of those are cheaper than the Hel. So there you go: Hel for quality assurance, g6 for portability, and EVO 4 for professional recordings.
Take it with a grain of salt though.
@@chuckolatte600 it makes sense to me, Hel has so much power, but its fierce competitors won't let it go that easy, the JDS Atom and the iFi Zen
@@mmorales508 I finally decided to get the Monolith M1070 ($299), and the iFi Zen DAC. Never had anything sound this great and powerful before
And remember, when you equalize the HD600 a tiny bit,its got some bass ;)
What takes the crown at this 250-500.00 price point for neutrality, detail, and soundstage depth/breadth? I have a Heresy and E30, and I want to use this for critical listening/studio mixing (in a noise controlled environment). Big bonus points if they make it seem like sound is coming from outside the plane of the headphones.
Closest would most likely be the Hifiman Sundara, or the Focal Elex pre-owned
Hi there, nice review. Do you think that the slight sharpness of the vocals and treble could be mitigated by using an amplifier that leans just ever so slightly towards the warmer side?
Well yes, I'd say so
@@chuckolatte600 thank you for your reply.

hello friend. for a beginner audiophile you think sundara or hd600. i love to listen to artists like imagine pink floyd (i think u know what i mean). but i also love my edm well, more i love aphex twin. now which do you recommend, im not a basshead, and thats why detail and and higher quality mids/treble is what i need. thanks for your content bro
Man, I didn't realise the 600s could take a 10db boost in the bass
@@Farpun Yep! You just need to make it a peak and take down a few other frequencies so it doesn't distort. I got the EQ profile from Metal571.
Plus, I usually don't like using EQ to add anything, just remove.
why do you use the word sweet to describe sound? haha. . . what about sour, salty and spicy?
How would you compare the Sundara and HE500/5LE?
Cheers!
Haven't heard them yet. Sorry
Sundara have subbass? Well well, a new daily driver spotted
No they dont... In stock form 2020 version. There is no True opem back with flat sub bass extension . And DT1990 doesnt count the are semi open.
They have from 6hz to 75khz frequency range so you can feel what you can't hear like the low end sub

HD650 all these years nothing at all
what kind of eq software are you using?
EqualizerAPO with the PEACE GUI
The edition xs is even better and cheaper
