- An experiment with large air-filled RC tires.
KaVan Tires from SIG Mfg.
DuBro Tires from Motion RC
This video explains the difference in sizes and weights between these two brands of RC Tires.
It also explains the differences in how the wheels are made.
Thanks to Bob from TrippleThreatRC on You Tube for the heads up on the KaVan tires!!
• KaVan vs DuBro Air Fil...
Incredible - so much lighter! I must try them! I'm only about 30-45 minutes from Sig ;) Maybe I will hit them up!
I have not seen you compare the DoBro V Ka Van's on your U-Tube Chanel yet
Thanks for the video... and you answered a couple of questions.
Best rc plane tip I’ve seen in a while. I thought Robart were legit.
Cool I need these for my Pilatus Porter 220 cm span and I don't need the weight of the Dubro's. I go for the Kavans. You helped me!
Thank you! Imma get these if I get a draco!!!
They work great!
I fitted a pair of the 6" KaVan tyres to my E-Flite Carbon-Z Cub. Saved around a pound in the aircraft weight and they were only 1/3 the price of the DuBro tyres. I fly from a tarmac runway and so far had no issues with them. They really take the harshness out of the landings compared to the stock wheels.
I have 5" KaVan tires on Draco now and they work great.
I saw today those Du Bro wheels at the field and they looked much softer than my 4 inch Kavan installed in my big lazy bee but i didn't knew about the weight. So ill stick to Kavans, besides my Bee has shock absorbers. Thanks for the video
Thanks for posting this.I bought the DuBro 4" for my parkzone sport cub but didn't like the weight so I never tried them.Been looking for something else ever since. Will get a set of these for sure!
Well worth it!!
I am super duper happy this information helped you!
I'm glad you found the tip helpful Dick. As I mentioned, the Kavan's are very light but the rubber is very thin and probably more suited to grass runways. I'm not sure how long they would stand up to repeated use on pavement or concrete runways. The positive benefit stemming from the loss of 3/4 of a pound on a small plane can't be understated when it comes to performance and aerobatic capability. Thanks for the "almost" shout out lol.
Happy flying Dick!
Cheers, Bob
Kool
I have never used a hard runway........
I would like to some day.
In a way I'm glad I fly from a grass field. It has saved me a lot of money over the years because I can't fly EDF "jets" with their tiny little landing gear lol.
LOL
I didn't know if your wanted me to use your real name??
I have nothing to hide 😊
For real, Those KaVan might be a great alternative . Shared.
Hey that is a great idea, I have some, I will give it a go.......
I have an FMS Super Cub 1700mm and it comes with bush tires 6-1/4" tires but theyre super hard. i was looking at the Dubro's but the weight was crazy. found this video.. i think ill have to try the Kavans. thanks! i kinda wish they had a 6" though....
Check out this site northwestrc.com/Wheels_c_89.html they have 5" & 6" Kavan tires. The have a bid of tread but they look great on my Carbon Z cub (5")
Thanks a big bunch for watching.
Since years I use Cavan air wheels on my planes. The are gorgeous light, shock absorbing an durable. Real Made in Germany product guys.
Thanks for this. Building a Big Lazy Bee from plans and really want that balloon look but weight is critical. I ran across this same problem with WWI wheels. In that instance the Williams Bros were lead and the same size DuBros were much lighter.
Thanks for the video! I´m about to order one or two pairs. The grooved ones are almost the same size but a bit cheaper .. Best regards!
I just received my KaVan 6" treaded wheels and I have to say I am not very pleased. The material is more of a plastic than a rubber and is very stiff! Even with no air pressure its takes about 5lb of pressure on the axle to begin to deform the material of 1 tire. I was looking for a very soft rubber for scale bush landings but instead I got some el-cheapo plastic wheels that WERE NOT CHEAP! Sure they are light but so is foam. If you are looking for soft rubber KaVan is not the choice. Gonna try the DuBro next despite their huge weight.
I was disappointed too. When you think of an inflatable tire you expect it to be rubber, not plastic.
Thanks foe the tip. I was needing the largest size and the treaded come larger. I was suspicious of the hardness of these judging form vids in here. Thanks for confirming it
Great video, thanks!
I’ve been looking for a pair of 5 inch Kavan tires forever. Out of stock everywhere.
I got my Kavans today. Here's what you can't see. The Kavans are very light, yes. But they are made of a very stiff polymer that feels more like plastic than rubber. The dubro tires feel like supple rubber. They would grip pavement, while the Kavans would slide around.
Getting some for my Draco. ASAP.
Thank You Very much for the video, I m building a super cub 2.8m Wingspan and around 6kg AUP...no way to put the dubro ...too havy...thanks for the information
I'll bet the KaVan wheels weigh a lot less than the original wheels too!
I have some on order now.
I liked your video,
And here is my stance on this.
To add insult to injury.., as much as I LOVE Sig... you will NOT get a hold of anyone there at the time of this posting. I have sent 5-6 emails and called 40-60 times in the last 4 months (2023)the word is thy are moving to a more modern facility. and I have ordered and got my stuff from them with lightning fast results, but it has to be what they have on hand or in stock.
But there is 0 response from Sig (right now)
I have danced this tire dance before, and crunched the numbers too.
It is now my opinion.......
Tires are "Crucial" during Landing and take off too, but especially LANDING, wind, bad judgement, terrible terrain, pilot error, equipment failure.... etc.
But the tires can make or BREAK a bad landing or just plain bad situation.
I'll comp the weight of duBro's every time.. they have saved me so many times.
They're like a stronger motor or battery is heavier, it's "The Cost" for the reward.
And LANDING is mandatory no other option....
well,.
crash or tear something up
And at the end of the day...
if you are running a big enough plane to justify bigger tires like 5-6" (like me)
the plane can absorb and handle that weight., it's just part of it.. like anything else.
You have to allow for it and accept it.
My money goes for duBro.
They have been around a long time have earned my business and loyalty.
Their quality of tire is unbeatable to me,.
Lighter is not always better, cheaper is not always better.
Cheers.
The word is that the Dubro last and the Kavan wear out fast. Lighter tire but way less materiel. You'll get better flight but you'll have to replace them quick. I can't even find them for sale anywhere anyhow.
Last? What are you doing, running an RC car or flying a plane? I've seen Trexler super thin inner tube inflatables last on models for over a decade, so I can't imagine you're going to wear out these KAVANs anytime soon. Anyhow, I found literally 4 places to buy them within seconds of running a google search, so not sure why you can't find them. Maybe it was different a year ago when you posted. Anyhow, here is a link>

WoW thanks for the info. My Flex Cessna is due Friday , this answers the tire question. Would love to know what Landing Gear mods you did.
Those 5" Kavans are about $50/pair. Lordy.
How are they holding up after 3 years? All these comments about longevity concerns of KaVan… have you found that to be true or not a concern?
Great info!!!
unfortunately the Kavan are more expensive, and they have only 2 sizes.
Do they come in a pair or individually?
Thank you for your time and your videos
Pair I believe
@@DickGibson thank you
I need those :)
Fill the tires with Helium, that ought to shed some weight... Lol
good day sir dick gibson, i just want to know the size of the hub of those wheels thanks.
What are the first set called? I'd like a solid wheel for my application
The solid plastic wheels were the ones that came on the Flex Cessna 170.
I believe you can buy them as a replacement part for the 170
www.flexinnovations.com/product-p/fpm317006.htm
They are hard hard hard but they are very light.
Thanks a bunch for watching!!
@@DickGibson thanks!
Wheel size?
New tires for the flex
Absolutely
Along with the reinforced landing gear it is a whole new plane.
Even better!!!
Good info. So, how much did the stock hard as a rock tires weigh?
337 grams almost 12 oz
Wow, those Kavan's kick butt on all of them!
PS: I see you are wearing an Invicta watch. I knew there was a reason I liked you! :))
Dick, these wheels are for a full size Cessna ?
This was a part of a lengthy search for new and better tires for my new Flex Innovations Cessna 170 which is a very large foam plane with over sized 6.5" wheels which are hard plastic. Also the landing gear was weak. I reinforced the landing gear and found these tires and now the plane has been transformed.
The KaVan tries are 5"
ok dick. have nice flights
kavan will lose air, dubros will not they are light but not durable at all. Too bad.
