I'm very thankful for accidentaly reading/watching Blue Period, Arte and Beserk at the same time, thus picking up drawing again after a 12 year hiatus. I never thought about drawing again after I hadn't to draw as a child and those three showed me how much fun it is to create something beautiful.
something else I really liked about Ranking of Kings, along with all that's mentioned here, is that this is one of the only shows I have seen where there is a snake and a snake themed character that arent evil, scheming, backstabbers.
A good sign for UA-camr critics is their willingness to try different media. All the shows you named are so varied, from their storytelling to their visual art, and it’s really encouraging. Keep up the good work, you're a great inspiration!
True but critics who mostly stick to smaller pools of media they enjoy but use them as jumping off points to talk about much broader topics from writing to social issues are also highly underrated. Lily Orchard hbomberguy and Moviebob are masters of that.
@@viraltang Oh yeah, totally! I love Lily Orchards especially because she’s telling something similar, encouraging people to go out of their comfort zone and trying something other than adventure fantasy, naming the qualities of all those different slice of life shows, or how to improve story structures not only in TV shows but in video games too!

9:28 I want the "talent" and "smart" "compliments" to go away forever. I'm a software engineer and at this point I feel it's more used as an excuse to not hire entry-level people. It also stops so many people from picking up a new thing that they'd love to be able to do but don't even try because they "can't". I'm not saying it's easy, mind you. I'm saying it's possible and that the difficulty can be spread out over years to make it very doable. Also finding people to figure it out with is so good. I always think of László Polgár, the father of the Polgár sisters, the chess grandmasters. He decided to raise his children in a way to teach them all he can and make geniuses of them to show that it all is just hard work, no "talent" required. Worth looking into, imho.
It'd be nice if language could function in such a way that "talented" and "smart" could change so they mean that the person put a lot of work into a thing to become skilled in physical (Talent) or mental (Smart) fields of work, but I doubt it'd ever become a thing since it's already so engrained in our language, so we'll just have to settle for more specific descriptions.
part of the reason I make an effort to say skilled more rather than talented. Talented often dismisses the hard work people put in. And from what I recall Skilled indicates less innate and more of a mastery/show of effort. Idk for Smart though, I'd say skill also would apply cuz itd indicate a skill at say, math or some such. I know that often the term used in parallel to talent is also Genius, which also disregards hard work in favor of innate talent. Which also has to be fostered with hard work and effort in order to not stagnate so referring to it all as talent is often super dismissive yeh.
Thank you for giving more Stop-motion films some love! I've loved Stop Motion all my life since I watched Wallace and Gromit as a kid. Heck, even movies that bring the *aesthetics* of stop motion like The Mitchells vs. the Machines makes me grin from ear to ear! As for Helluva boss? IDK, the lore of the show and having daemon protagonists who are supposed to be evil just didn't click with me. Maybe it's worth a second chance, though...

I hope you are doing okay. You're clearly talented and have a bright future ahead of you.
To be honest there's very little that's definitively good or bad takes when it comes to reactions, that's the nature of reactions. But in this specific case? Even as a straight(ish) white male(ish) viewer the parts that were mentioned as irredeemable brought back the memories I'd tried to repress of just shouting at my screen wanting the main character to kill himself immediately before the checkpoint system locked in actions that were really uncomfortable to watch a human do, let alone protagonist. I can't even begin to imagine how that reaction would be impacted if in REAL LIFE I had previously dealt with being the victim of people like that. So yea, at the end of the day people attacking someone for their pain is nothing but gross.
Dangit, you mentioned it, so I had to watch House of Asmodeus again! I loved how that episode sparked so many conversations, not just about the characters and story, but about relationship dynamics in general. Love stuff like that.
The freaking House, omg, that is certainly a movie. That movie made me feel weird for such a long time after. Especially the second story absolutely creeped me out. That feeling of desperation that set in was wild. I don't think I have felt feelings because of a movie that strongly and that long after in more than a decade. Anything horror is not my cup of tea, but I love anything animation and thus also stop motion.
Had the same experience, it's SO uncomfortable in such a great way lol! The only other film I remember having felt something similar from is Parasite, in terms of vibes I think it is kind of similar to part 2.
I really enjoyed Ranking of Kings, but I if had to be nitpicky about something, it has to be Miranjo's past for me. The whole "we were a GOOD, RICH and INTELLIGENT town that decided to FIX this EVIL and POOR village, but at the end they still betrayed us because their heart of still POOR or something" didn't sit well with me at all. Maybe I'm just projecting too much of my own reality (Brazil), but any story that presents poor as these spiritually miserable people instead of the resourceful and hardworking that it's actually composed of, usually takes me out of the series a little. Which is a shame, because I was really enjoying the series as a whole (also the openings are amazing)
This sums up my feelings towards part 2 pretty well. I was quite shocked at how poorly written the two towns were, considering how the author went out of their way making the main cast layered and complex, not black & white. It didn't ruin my experience watching this show, but that certainly was... a choice.
I love when you post recommendations. After Ascendance of a Bookworm, you became my most trustworthy recommendation person. I'm honestly about to just pause this video and watch all of Ranking of Kings before moving onto the next rec lol
Omg The House really is something all of itself (warning I’m gonna mention some spoilers) The second part when the mouse comes back home from the hospital and all the weird mouse-bug hybrid creatures are clapping then that transition to the next scene gave me chills like nothing else has before. Great move, truly disturbing.
Fuck yes, Blue Period helped me work through some mental stuff that prevented me from enjoying creating art like I used to. I watched everything from your list aside from Ranking of Kings, gotta give it a shot
I think Blue Period has changed the life of everyone I know who have touched it in some way. I connected with Yuka so hard I realized I was trans because of them (I think they are trans fem and in parts are referred to with she/her pronouns but I am going to refer to them by they/them here because that is what the UA-camr did) and during episode 10 when they were doing the nude drawing I put myself into Yuka's shoes so quickly I got a dysphoria attack from it. But I would rewatch it anytime and the line "If you are still bothered about what people think of you then you are not ready to die yet" keeps me going everyday when I see the world getting worse
Good list! If you're looking for other hidde gems from the past year btw there's one anime i wanna put on your table: Odd Taxi! It's a mystery series in all its might, with a cast of rock solid characters, a plot so tight you have to be there for every moment of it, and emotions i didn't even know i could feel! Despite its animal-cartoony look, a little like ranking of kings, it carries cery adult themes and the way the story is woven will very much require you to think along! (Oh and don't look too much up for it since the slightest spoilers can already be present!)
Heartily seconding this rec, I just finished odd taxi today and the ending has been giving me massive chills every time I think about it. Such a good show.
Ranking of things actually reminds me a lot of original princess Knight. While the main character in princess Knight didn't have a disability because they were a girl the was static against them inherit the Kingdom. Also... The art style
A lot of the care put into the earlier episodes for his disability gets tossed in the later third. Somehow people start understanding Bochi’s vocal gesturing without him signing anything so as far as I can tell nobody learned how to sign. Also the strange treatment of the Korean stand-in culture.
@@ladygrey4113 That is true, but I don't think it's more of them suddenly knowing what Bojji wants, but rather they actually pay more attention to his stature and mood since before he was barely respected and treated as a foolish dreamer. Man, The House. That movie gave me major existential dread with the last segment which I honestly loved and the first one had me completely terrified which I also love. Stop motion animation rarely gets any of the love it deserves and man if it isn't fun to just watch and feel that uncanny valley it's amazing.
It's funny that the shows on this list where your first thought was "Eeeh, I don't know if this if for me" were the ones where I was going "Stop-motion horror? Demon workplace comedy? Tell me more immediately! Oh, the first one is actually scary and the second has heart and is super gay? Definitely count me in, then!" Which would seem to indicate a crucial difference in baseline tastes, and yet...maybe not, after all!
as somoene who really cant stand anime anymore, being a new artist (pick up the hobbie during lockdown), blue period as capable of making me cry and anticipate every episode
As someone with a The Moxxie/Millie short from that episode am glad it got a mention here. It geta overlooked because (ahh edgy violence is funny) but ita mich more than that. Violence is still great to watch though.
Genuinely surprised that you avoided Helluva Boss because of "cringe" vibes. Maybe it's just my circle of friends, but I was expecting a more niche and rough labor of love. Not the awesome web series starring amazing talent like the wonderful Richard Steven Horvitz. I guess it shows that you should never be held back by "cringe" alone.
I literally just keep coming back to this video on bad days because of the "everything is going to be ok" part. It just hits very differently than all the other ones, and some days I really, really need to hear that several times in a row.
AHHHHHHH. LITERALLY ONE FRAME OF BLUE PERIOD AND THE FIRST NOTE OF THE SONG AND I AM EMOTIONAL BECAUSE THE SERIES WHICH CHANGED MY LIFE IS GETTING THE RECOGNITION IT DISEVES. Sorry I just needed to get that out. I love Blue Period so I can't wait to hear what you have to say about it
Yay! I'm so excited for the Witch Hat Atelier anime as well! I was so pleasantly shocked when I saw the announcement! I also really enjoyed watching Ranking of Kings and several other animated shows that have come out lately. Perhaps I should give Helluva Boss another try? I'm pretty sure that was the one I tried watching before but got immediately turned off when they just casually spat out an R-slur in the middle of things... which really Really soured my impression of it. Even if a series features "villain" characters... it's hard for me to accept an author relying on slurs and bigoted language, y'know?
Tonight I started watching your series on 'Utena', which I am seeing for the first time this month. It's very fascinating, but I was very happy to find someone who can help me understand the'Revolutionary Girl' series. While still celebrating, I subscribed to your channel, which brought me to your site. I found this video which said that you are also a big fan of ' Blue Period' ! My day is now complete- I have another soul who is really into this amazing story !
So happy your recommended Ranking of Kings. I somehow never noticed anyone talking about it while it was coming out (despite a LOT of people talking about it) and randomly came across it one day and decided to start watching it. It was a big surprise when I found out it was actually really popular!
Me: This "Ranking of Kings" seems interesting, I'll watch an episode now and keep with the video. Me, three hours later: So you binged it all at once you say?
Yay! New Noralities! Thanks for the recommendations. I have not watched any of these shows, but I am excited to check them out. Maybe not The House; I don’t do horror. But all the others sound great. I’ll be looking forward to your next video. Don’t worry about how long it takes to finish; your work is always worth the wait.
I totally agree about HB, the comedy is hit or miss for me but the art and emotional moments keep me coming back Also the gay dad drama got me too you aren't alone
I am like, way late to the party on this video, but the mention of horror and stop motion in 2022 made me want to bring up "Mad God". It saw it's release on Shudder about a month after this video went live, but it is absolutely some of the best animation I've seen in years. It's done by Phil Tippet, the guy behind some of the most impressive visual effects of Star Wars, RoboCop and Jurassic Park.
Oh my gosh I LOVED "Ranking of Kings!" :D It's just one of those shows that so easily makes you go, "WHAAAAT?!" in a fun way that was exciting to experience with my brother!
“The house” scared the absolute SHIT out of me. I haven’t been that scared in a long time. It was such an eerie atmosphere that it was horrifying even when nothing explicitly scary was happening
You need to stop clarifying so many of your statements. The only people who would see your work and NOT figure out what you really mean on their own, are the nitwits who will continue to judge you no matter HOW well you explain it. You have better communication skills than you might think, but you can still practice them to make yourself clearer without having to stop and cover your butt quite so often. Do not fear being misunderstood or judged by others. You have wonderful insights and a well-organized, intelligent basis for your views. And you owe NO ONE any validation for your words. Accept that. Also, I don't know much of anime, but I am a HUGE fan of Helluva Boss myself. The depth of the world setting is what keeps me interested, even though I also dislike watching "bad people doing bad things". This setting is interesting because the manages to toy with the definition of "bad " well enough that you have to take hard look at how you define Good and Evil. And I love that!
I really enjoyed All Saints Street this past year. The episodes are really short and the new season was just translated and released in English on UA-cam. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes supernatural slice-of-life. I'd place the project scale at the same level of Bee and PuppyCat and just as cute.
an anime i NEVER see people talking about is Healer Girl! It's basically about singing magic girls, but it has good humor and the characters are so relatable! when i finished i cried just because i didnt want it to end
Watch Symphogear. Seriously, it’s the anime with the MOST amount of GOOD LGBT representation I have ever seen. It starts slow, but it’s seriously amazing once it gets going. It’s worth giving a 4 episode test (in my personal opinion, episodes 2 and 3 of season 1 are the worst episodes in all 5 seasons, hence why 4 episode instead of 3 episode). It’s definitely not for everyone, but it definitely deserves more of a chance than people give it.
Ranking of Kings reeeeeally lost me in the second half of the show, with just about everything with Miranjo being pretty uh. Bad. BUT it's great to see The House on here! The first and third sections were great, and even the second one (though not really being my thing) had a lot interesting going on.
Not only does it really go off the rails and fall flat in the 2nd half, the author pushes a pretty awful xenophobic nationalist agenda when portraying the Houma and Gyakuzu. Also there's the weird generational grooming that goes on with Miranjo.
Everything surrounding Miranjo from her backstory to the...thing...with Daida and Bosse is cursed as hell. I think most people are watching for Boji, Kage, and Queen Hilling at this point. Because everything involving Miranjo is seriously botched narrative wise. Even if the whole Gyakuza situation was a case of Bosse/Miranjo having a biased point of view and everything was actually more nuanced. Miranjo dragged the show down, and dragged Daida's character arc down with it.
Yeahhhh It was a really great series for me but the thing with Daida wanting to...marry Miranjo ruined it for me. Like, Daida is a 12 year old, wanting to marry a woman that engineered his birth just so his father would have a flesh suit, a woman quite older than he is, that was also obsessed with his dad, and also was the cause of the horrible death of Boji's mother, and ruined many lives. It can't get any worse than that. Is sad because the animation and story are great but it soured the series as a whole for me
Yup pretty much, Miranjo all in all was a huge stain on an otherwise really good show. All from literally everyone forgiving her, a mass murderer, and Daida actually bringing her back and saying he'd marry her is just eughh I was actually glad for a murderous female villain but then she again falls into the same tropes I despise.
eh the thing with boiji and Adidas...it's kind of hinted that they are MORE 9lder that they appear, like remember his father FOUNDED a kingdom when boiji was born, and a lot of the cast seems to get older faster with every flashback of what it seems..But yeah this it can get into the "1000 dragon" territory but i kind doesn't mind with the ending because it shows how it try to still capture this "fairy tales" vibe...
I love your content so much!! It feels like I'm listening to a close friend. You give off such a warm, wlecoming vibe and I can't wait to see more of your content!!
Personally I love Helluvaboss it's style of humour and slapstick violence is right up my street also I love how they develop blizo the only thing that I dislike is that Milly doesn't get much development.
Amazing video! I have watched most of these but def will check out the House which I haven’t seen yet! Idk if it’s for you but if you’re looking for something different than the Anime norm I’d highly recommend Oddtaxi!
When you were talking about how art was the only thing you wanted to do with your life and you had to do it one way or another, I teared up. I do relate, a lot. I'm in my thirties now and I knew early on it was what I wanted. But I was worried about how I would make a living, so I tried doing other things for a while, but in combination with some personal life stuff, trying to do other things kind of broke me. It took ages to get back on my feet, and I'm still not really there yet, but art makes me want to be alive. So I'm also at the stage where I have to do it one way or another. It's really starting to look up though. Great video as always, thank you for making these!
Thank you so much for recommending Blue Period! I ended up marathon-ing it in one night and absolutely loved it. Would have completely missed it otherwise
If you want another adult stop motion horror about a house I would recommend The Wolf House, an Argentinian film about a girl who runs away from a Nazi cult. Instead of using clay or figures like most stop motion, they use paper mache, usually creating the characters and sets during the story. It’s incredible and it think it’s free on Tubi Also Mad God is another stop motion horror I’ve heard good stuff about
How do you feel about The Owl House? In my opinion season 2 was really good and a huge improvement from S1. I would feel pretty comfortable recommending it to fans of animation.
Yup, here I go again, checking every one of your recommendations because it just fcking clicks!! Thank you for this and yes! Ranking of Kings is unabashedly wholesome and amazing. Cheers and stay well!
One thing I was not prepared for was young Ouken being so damn hot. Blue period was just a beautiful story, I was watching it when you posted your "gender non-conforming" video and Yuka was such an astounding supporting character and the show felt like it taught me a lot.
I just finished Ranking of Kings. Truly one of my favourite anime ever. So glad to see you give it the love it deserves! (I totally get the weariness of popular anime)
Add me to the "I definitely want to and plan on watching Arcane, but haven't yet" club. I think it's mostly because I want to watch it with my wife but we're in the middle of some other series at the moment and progressing slowly.

as somoene who really cant stand anime anymore, being a new artist (pick up the hobbie during lockdown), blue period as capable of making me cry and anticipate every episode
Lol why there alot of good ones
What happened man? Do you need someone to talk to?
being told that everything is going to be okay after each video never fails to bring me to tears
Me watching this drinking from my Fizzozzie mug and wearing my Fizzozzie sweatshirt! That musical number from episode 7 was very affective.
As someone with a The Moxxie/Millie short from that episode am glad it got a mention here. It geta overlooked because (ahh edgy violence is funny) but ita mich more than that.
Violence is still great to watch though.
Noralities: **starts talking about blue period**
Me who just got the manga and is super excited about an art-related anime/manga: LETS GOOOOO
I love Blue Period so I can't wait to hear what you have to say about it
Animation is wonderful and the Oscars need to recognise that 😠
Just came to say that I watched 'Blue Period' based on your recommendation, and I couldn't put it down. I loved it! Thanks for making this video!
Aleksandr Petrov has a great stop-animation approach, using oil paints on a pane of glass. With each frame, he moves the paint around.
So happy your recommended Ranking of Kings. I somehow never noticed anyone talking about it while it was coming out (despite a LOT of people talking about it) and randomly came across it one day and decided to start watching it. It was a big surprise when I found out it was actually really popular!
Blue Period and Ranking of Kings have been so important to me these last few months. I'm very happy to see you highlighting them!
21:25 Thank you, something just happened and I needed that.
I totally agree about HB, the comedy is hit or miss for me but the art and emotional moments keep me coming back
Also the gay dad drama got me too you aren't alone
I had just finished re-watching your 2010's anime rec's about half an hour ago haha, the timing was perfect
Not sure how I managed to miss Ranking of Kings existing, but the way you talked about it this is something I need to fix immediately
Oh my gosh I LOVED "Ranking of Kings!" :D
It's just one of those shows that so easily makes you go, "WHAAAAT?!" in a fun way that was exciting to experience with my brother!
“The house” scared the absolute SHIT out of me. I haven’t been that scared in a long time. It was such an eerie atmosphere that it was horrifying even when nothing explicitly scary was happening
I love your new avatar outfit and poses
They need to make a Minish Cap remake with clay and cloth aesthetics
So many points to show out, it’s giving “I like this show, but they don’t have this specific thing I like in it!”
Promised Neverland's ending(s): [Exists]
Noralities: [PTSD of whatever other crappy anime endings you can think of]
You just made my day telling me about the full animation of "The Girl from the Other Side"!
Aww yeah comfy recs from comfy youtuber. Thanks as always
I watched Ranking of Kings from your recommendation, and now I’m crying nonstop.
Left field comment - the water in your animation reminded me of The Last Unicorn, which is a huge plus, anyway keep up the good work!
12:17 My sibilings laugh at me during the all movie because of this.
This has become my happy place, this channel I mean
I absolutely love the background music you use! You have great taste. Especially prelude to an afternoon with a faun.
Thank you for the recommendations! I've been on the fence about checking out The House, but the design of it all looks so fascinating.
Babe wake up, new Noralities video just dropped
I have had a really hard day, so this video was exactly what I needed.
You forgot the most important thing about Ranking of Kings. There's a guy with a snake boyfriend. A snoyfriend, if you will.
Can I just say I LOVE the music you chose for this video???? I almost screamed when I heard the R&J music because I love that ballet so much
I really enjoyed All Saints Street this past year. The episodes are really short and the new season was just translated and released in English on UA-cam. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes supernatural slice-of-life. I'd place the project scale at the same level of Bee and PuppyCat and just as cute.
Blue Period is AWESOME! i've been following the Manga since chapter 1 and it always gets better
Finallyy!!! I was waiting for that video for so loong! 👏🏾 Nora would you do recs regularly throughout seasons?
an anime i NEVER see people talking about is Healer Girl! It's basically about singing magic girls, but it has good humor and the characters are so relatable! when i finished i cried just because i didnt want it to end
hey wholeheartedly recommend the blue period manga over the anime. seeing the works and medium changes on paper makes it a whole lot nicer.
Still patiently hoping that one day we get your take on how Arcane handles a certain favorite topic/trope you brought up several times in this video.
I was literally about to comment on your CCS video asking for this before remembering to look with my eyes
All from literally everyone forgiving her, a mass murderer, and Daida actually bringing her back and saying he'd marry her is just eughh
I was actually glad for a murderous female villain but then she again falls into the same tropes I despise.
eh the thing with boiji and Adidas...it's kind of hinted that they are MORE 9lder that they appear, like remember his father FOUNDED a kingdom when boiji was born, and a lot of the cast seems to get older faster with every flashback of what it seems..But yeah this it can get into the "1000 dragon" territory but i kind doesn't mind with the ending because it shows how it try to still capture this "fairy tales" vibe...
Hellava Boss gives me genuine hope for Hazbin Hotel.
Amazing video! I have watched most of these but def will check out the House which I haven’t seen yet!
Idk if it’s for you but if you’re looking for something different than the Anime norm I’d highly recommend Oddtaxi!
I loved ODDTAXI. It was really different compared to the stuff I usually watch
Oh g d it, I'm high and of course you used THAT devilman page, i choked on my drink 🤣
This video is officially certified by the Recommending Ones & Zeros.
Kotaro Lives Alone is worth checking out. You will ugly cry every episode, but it's so wholesome and cute.
10:30 to me doing what I love only becomes work when outher people constantly interrupt me.
Have you seen Odd Taxi? That show feels unique in 2021 and it is very entertaining!
Babe wake up! New
Noralities video just dropped
my favorite comfort channel when im sic :)
12:00 Dude, I heard this music and thought you were talking about Hunter × Hunter. It sounds JUST like The Zoldycks theme!
cheers someone finally talked about the cup head cartoons
If you want another adult stop motion horror about a house I would recommend The Wolf House, an Argentinian film about a girl who runs away from a Nazi cult. Instead of using clay or figures like most stop motion, they use paper mache, usually creating the characters and sets during the story. It’s incredible and it think it’s free on Tubi
Also Mad God is another stop motion horror I’ve heard good stuff about
How do you feel about The Owl House? In my opinion season 2 was really good and a huge improvement from S1. I would feel pretty comfortable recommending it to fans of animation.
Thank you so much for these recs! I'll definitely keep them in mind.
started watching Boji with my partner and aHhHhHhHh i love it so far 😭😭😭😭
So glad to see a Noralities video to cheer up my day! ^^
Thank you for the list of recommendations. I know what you will recommend I will like without having to bite too big of a bullet
Dress Up Darling is fantastic too, its creator is a woman who based the manga off her experiences as a cosplayer
If you wanted some more stop motion horror, check out the wolf house. It was on your wiki list and it is very good.
The house was fantastic, and I am so happy to see it on this list!!!
On your advice, I watched Ranking of Kings, and enjoyed it a lot.
this was a fun video! I would love more showcases of your favs 😍
Another great video! :) haven't seen any of these shows yet, but now I might have to check some of them out!
I've watched all of the shows you talked about in the past year or so too and definitely recommend them too for anyone interested!
