I always liked how there was no hesitation from Chris when Barnes told him to shoot. No overly dramatic music either. Just a great scene.
And no cuts
YES!! That was perfectly scripted and timed. Just straight to it, no excess. Incredible performances from both.

The shot reactions looked good too. Pretty realistic
Barnes probably thought he wouldn’t shoot him.
People who laugh at Charlie Sheen need to watch this film. His gradual descent into a tormented soldier from idealistic college boy is some of the best acting i've seen in a war film. I love this movie so much.

Barnes was deliberately trying to kill Taylor. He saw Taylor running towards him and still tried to cave his skull in. He did deserve it.
He should've shot him in the genitals, and let him bleed out slowly.
"Deliberately" is not the right word. It implies that there was some time taken to think about and possibly plan and act. Barnes was in the middle of a fight for his life, in the dark, and Taylor grabbed his arm and pulled him from behind. I can easily see how any person could be so preoccupied with violence that they attack anyone that comes into their field of view, in a circumstance like that. I am not saying Barnes deserved to live, I am just saying he might have not really wanted to kill Taylor, even though he tried to. Just sayin... and stuff
his behavior prior to that says otherwise. he was looking for an excuse to kill Taylor after Taylor had attacked him in the barracks.

Johnny Depp was also excellent in this film.
I first saw this in a movie theater, shortly after it was released, I was really taken back. When the movie was over, and the lights went on, a man in the audience was sobbing uncontrollably, and his wife was trying to console him. I'm not old enough to have served in that horrible war, but I remember the guys from the neighborhood who did. I later worked as a police officer. Almost all of the older guys in my precinct served in Vietnam. I tried not to ask questions, but when you a riding with a guy for 8 plus hours, it would eventually come up. I am truly in awe of these men, and feel for the issues they have suffered through.
I had an FTO, who was a combat Vietnam Marine. Learned a lot from him..
@@mresch8 I am retired law enforcement. I worked with a lot of Vietnam vets in the 80's and 90's.
I started in 2000, so had a bunch of guys who had served in Vietnam as FTO. Bunch of professional quite warriors.
When I saw this at the movies in 1986 you could almost hear a pin drop when the movie was over and the lights came on. Nobody talking as everyone headed to their cars from the theatre. Everybody was in a sober mood sort of shell shocked from what they just witnessed on screen.
Phil, I am from Brazil but I lived and worked a couple of months in the US, in NOLA. One of my coworkers was a Afghanistan veteran. Though he was young (younger than me) he had serious issues from the horrors of war. He just couldn´t talk about his experiences at all. Too traumatizing. I feel sorry for whoever has to go through those horrible experiences and understand how moved and shaken they can be when they watch that kind of movie. Thanks for sharing your story.
"Only one who can kill Barnes, is Barnes." Then, as Barnes is about to kill Taylor, a plane representing the institutional version of Barnes (bombing your own troops) looms up in his place and gets him.
John Doe
2 deep 4u
To be fair, the jet doesn't kill Barnes. Taylor is still the one to pull the trigger.
John Doe you're implying that the US military deliberately bombed US troops?
Kel Hip yes and no. It’s not like they want to kill their own troops. They had no choice. And these type of situations occurred almost all the time because U.S ended up overrun a lot.
Barns was caught up in his hand to hand combat and it was dark and confusing! In that situation he would killed anyone who come behind him like that! The airstrike had been ordered and both survived it, I understand Taylor's anger and why he killed Barnes. Barnes welcomed death and urged Taylor to kill him!
After the war Taylor moved to California & got a house on the beach & brought in his brother who is chiropractor & his son to live with him.

Not sure if coincidence or intentional but very smart of Taylor to use the Vietcong AK to frag Barnes as a better coverup
CSI and JAG aren’t going to be responding to the scene. He could’ve shot him with any gun he wanted and no one would’ve known the difference.
Heyitzj0sh doesn’t matter 7.62 will go right through you and hit whatever is behind you
If it were really about avoiding suspicion, then Taylor should have stabbed Barnes with the bayonet instead of shooting him. Rifles are loud, and if someone was firing off a rifle when everything had already gone quiet -- like everything was quiet when Taylor finally shot Barnes -- then it probably would have gotten some unwanted attention from someone.
However, I don't think it was really about that. I think it was more about drawing parallels between what Barnes did to Elias and what Taylor was now doing to Barnes, and showing that Taylor -- in spite of how much he hated Barnes -- was in danger of becoming like him.
As Oliver Stone himself noted, friendly fire is highly known about in the military. It happens more than the military would like known. Stone himself estimated 10%-20% of all battlefield casualties are friendly fire and not just small arms. Also, artillery and air support. In a battle that large, they aren't going to do a CSI investigation. Action report: "died of small arms fire while engaging the enemy."
totally a coincidence.
look it up there's an alternate ending in which taylor didn't kill barnes
Barnes’ family will get a letter probably saying he was bravely killed in a fight against the Viet Cong. They’ll never know about Elias, or Taylor.
Just makes me think about what we know (or what we think we know) in both world history, or our own personal histories. Sometimes (probably more than we realize) there’s stories that go further than we ever could’ve imagined.
Maybe Barnes didn't have any family. He was a weirdo who kept signing up for more tours in Vietnam.
srujan00 - My point still stands that throughout history there’s definitely stories out there that were given a narrative that everyone stuck with and history was lied to
If you have family or friends in the military.....get names unit and dates and where-- all the contact info. They will fill you in to the truth. Keep it in a journal. Write the members friends and christmas cards etc. The survivors and friends there speak for the dead
Pat Tillman.
Remember they did the same thing in regards to Pat Tillman
. The Army initially said that he was killed during an ambush on a road outside of the village of Sperah in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. Brigadier General Gary M. Jones, the U.S. Department of Defense conducted a lengthy investigation into the claim and the truth ended up coming up that he alongside Afghan forces were killed in a friendly fire incident.

The bayonet, it is type-56, Chinese version AK-47.
The chinese Type 56 had a complete circle for the front sight post and not a semi circle. The one used in the movie is a Type 56 although I believe they intended a Russian style AK

I think it is meant to represent the fact that Barnes is completely gone in this scene. He is utterly and completely consumed by violence and war. It’s crazy how these old movies feel more real than the crap today, even though they’re in 4K. Producing is an art-form.
The answer is simple practical effects. I hate cgi heavy movies. Haven’t seen any of the much movies. Especially the newer ones that look like they take place in a video game world.
Because they had to use more physical effects at the time than CGI. Look at the bullet holes in Barnes' chest as Taylor shoots him. Holes in the shirt. Smoke pouring out of the wound. Shirt slowly getting soaked in blood. Not to mention that these effects were probably made by someone who's seen this sort of stuff because the director was a Nam vet as well.

Being in the Marines at that time I could understand how the lack of sleep, exhaustion, oppressive heat, lack of food, despair , hopelessness and the constant threat of death leaves you on the brink of a nervous breakdown. How if leadership encourages inhumanity to man the futility in opposing that becomes as Taylor opines to King.

Tom Berenger was such a good guy in Sniper, but he was a great villain too
I feel like Barnes was so sadistic because, he had been in war and had been fighting to the point where he started to not fear, and not be afraid of dying. And, I feel like the amount of war and PTSD that Barnes suffered caused him to go sadistic and go crazy. In the village scene when Barnes shoots that woman, that was the point where he went insane. And when he killed Elias, without hesitating, bc he knew that Elias was gonna rat him and half the Platoon that was on Barnes’ side out for what happened at the village. And when Taylor confronted him with the NVA rifle, he knew that he was gonna kill him and he wasn’t afraid, so he said “do it” and he didn’t seem afraid or petrified, he seemed like he was wanting it. Very intense film! and great acting by Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe.

3:47 I like how they pulled his shirt down a little to cover up the squib pack. Look closely & you can see the outline of the pack on the right side of his chest.
Regardless, hell of a film. Stone was a genius film maker.
“Rejoice, O young man in thy youth…".....Ecclesiastes 11:9
and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
Though it's over 30 years since this was released I can remember seeing this in the cinema. Today's movies are so rubbish you forget them when you leave the theatre. Makes you think.
And the studios want to keep it mediocre like that, because they don't want audiences to think for themelves and question the movie's content. A mirror of current society.
@@IronMan-tk8uc "IronMan93"
You must not watch any movies then. Statements like this are honestly completely asinine & void of truth.
@@SabatSch95 you could not be so wrong. I did a degree in media specialising in movies worked in a cinema and am an avid movie goer. What I was saying was that movies before are more memorable because of the scripts directing and acting.
@@kevinoconnor4102 you are delusional if you believe that. Happy new year though.
The acting was so good I thought Charlie sheen really killed barnes for this scene.
Tom did an excellent job with his "death"
I like how he sees the wounded Vietcong soldier crawling away but chooses to kill Barnes instead. He knew who the real enemy was
SSG Barnes went from being a soldier to a bully, thug and a killer; a man without a soul. He was already a dead man long before in his previous tours. Those men who sided with him did not respect him, they feared him.
Taylor was full of rage yet still smart up enough to grab the AK to frag Barnes with.
Barnes deserved friendly fire by Taylor in massive retaliation, he had it coming, it was revenge for Elias.
I spent 19 months in vietnam in combat this movie could not have been made without the input of somebody that was there.
Face acting in this scene is ridiculous, the subtle look on barnes face when he realizes what is happening, the quick exhale from chris when he realizes that, justified or not, he just murdered someone. really great.
I like how Charlie's character,Taylor?Shot him without hesitation. The man was a lowlife.
100% chance he just grabbed the closest weapon he could find, he wasn't worried about getting caught or covering his trail. He just wanted revenge
he took the weapon of a fallen vietcong though
More like justice than revenge.
@@FixedFace yeah it was the first weapon he could find, like this guy just said
A Human 2
not necessarily the first he could find. ill explain it to you later.
@@FixedFace nah man i wanna hear it
When Taylor picked up that AKM, he checked to see if there was a round chambered. Nice little detail, but I've heard that by that point in the filming, the actors were doing things like this without having to be prompted.
0:36 straight out of a nightmare
His T-shirt changes between 3:28 and 3:36 Im assuming because they needed to place the impact squibs under his shirt since he couldnt be crawling around with blood packs on as theyre delicate. In fact you can even see the pack move as he breathes. Interesting.
O yeah That shirt is WAY different. That's a shitty scene. WOW
well spotted
great catch
Wow, never noticed that
I miss squibs, CGI blood always looks lame as hell compared to the traditional effects.
What this movie personifies the most is that transition from decent human being to that animalistic mentality of kill or be killed. So many Vietnam Vets I have spoken to over the years since the movie release say one or the other of several things, they either couldn't watch it, or watched it and it haunted them all over again. All agree the movie was the most accurate portrayal of what it was really like!!!
Taylor had those same eyes looking at Barnes that Barnes had before he wasted Elias. Just noticed that after watching this movie for over 30years now.
Barnes eyes were terrifying, they showed the true evil that can can unfurl within a man.
Some people miss the fact that there's a VC crawling away in the background and yet Sheen heads for Barnes, his "real" enemy.
The juxtaposition of the crawling NVA soldier versus the crawling Sergeant Barnes highlights the most important detail in any conflict/war/fight etc... Always know who your real enemy actually is.
3:33 The expression of a man who has reaqched the final thread of his tolerance and have it snap.
No sharp line or dramatic gesture out of Taylor. He just did it. No savoring the moment, there's nothing to savor but bitterness
Winning!
Yeah that's what he was thinking for sure in the helicopter ride home!
That AK he picked up & did a chamber check on had a MILLED receiver. Definitely one of the better ones that were laying around. Good Day Everyone!
I still can’t decide what is the best performance of this movie, everybody was phenomenal
One of my late mothers favourite movies, and mine to. We saw it two times in the cinema and many times over the years on vhs and dvd. Thanks for the memories!
