Atari ST Upgrades | USB Optical mouse and Gotek

- I treat my newly acquired Atari 520STFM to a USB mouse adapter so that I can use a more modern and reliable optical mouse with it. Also installed was a Gotek drive and I ran into a minor issue with it that i will explain in the video.
I'm really excited to explore the ST.

Thanks for watching! So the Amiga guy finally gets an Atari ST :) Seriously though I am looking forward to putting it through it's paces and the tow modern upgrades in this video are an essential part of this in my opinion. What else do i need to consider?
One upside with the ST's mouse port placement is that should stop the uncovered USB converter board from being damaged. I may have to fit one of these to my ST once I (finally) get around to giving it some love.
Yeah that's a good point. If I was to only use this with the ST then i'd just leave it in situ but as I can use it on the Amiga too then I am going to have to find an extension cable that works. Can't be straining those ports! :)
Wish I never got rid of my ST.
One mouse. Two mice. 😉
Upgrades look good. I didn't know you could get usb mouse adapters so that's handy!
They are a godsend Baz! Well worth it and great value.
You could consider getting the high res mode to work (640 × 400 x 2 @ 72 Hz). Our dear friend Dr. A makes a nice VGA adapter. There is a wealth of productivity software that will require this mode, as well as a number of games. Running it in this mode will make it clear why the ST was considered a cheap / cost effective alternative to the Apple Mac. To support this idea, Atari sold both external hard disks and laser printers.
Interesting! I will make enquiries. Now you mention it I do remember Andrew doing a video on it 👍
I was looking to buy that mouse adaptor so thanks for showing that ;)
Looking great! I still don't have my video adapter for my new Atari 1040ST. Shipping from overseas takes so long right now! Things that use to take 7-10 days are taking 3 or 4 weeks now!
Yeah it's crazy how long things are taking at the moment.
Top work as always! 👍
The standard Atari STM1 mouse is pretty abysmal if I'm honest (bear in mind it was one of the first) so these little adapers are fantastic. Big fan of the Gotek as well!
Cheers. Yep definitely a much better experience! 😀
Not really! I've just restored one and its very well made and has ultrafine IR diodes and interrupter wheels, in fact if the IR starts to fail, you can drill holes to widen their "view" of the wheels and it makes it work again, albeit like how a cheaper mouse works. The PCB components are also good quality, unlike what the ST power supply used! Like any ball mouse, cleaning the ball and its rollers was critical if you wanted to maintain a smooth cursor or accuracy in games.
Just received my gotek which I'll be installing soon. I'll miss the sound of the floppy drive tho :(
What's the issue with the Go Tek cable not reaching. Am looking to buy a Go Tek off eBay. What do I need to know dude?
It just about reaches but you could get an extension for the cable I guess.
How are you connecting the ST to that monitor, or is it a TV?
With a Gotek drive, is it also possible to have an external disk drive connected to the Atari ? I have got loads of floppy disks that i would want to be able to accecss.
Yes you can connect a second drive as normal.
Where did you source the Sysinfo software?
ST Format Cover Disk #53a Dec 1993 :)
Did the original ST ribbon cable reach the Gotek ok?
Yes no issue with the ribbon cable 👍
If you use the specific ST-frame for the Gotek (as shown in the video), there's no problem. The PCB of the Gotek is installed upside down with that, which has two advantages: No need to twist the ribbon cable 180° and the power-supply connector is nearer to the cable. Normally the power cable is barely long enough when the Gotek is mounted this way.
