    I've never read a Star Wars book before and started Dark Disciple today based on your recommendation. I'm absolutely loving it so far. Thank you for the awesome videos!! I just found your channel a couple of days ago but I'm really enjoying your content. Looking forward to more videos!

    Big Star Wars fan, but never read any of the books - only comics when I was a kid. Thanks for the recommendations and loving the channel and your content!

    Master & Apprentice is a great suggestion. It's an easy read that introduces many new, interesting characters (Rael Averross is the best).
    I also like that it almost feels like a "mirror image" of the Phantom Menace, if you compare it's plot points with those of the movie. So it really is a great companion novel.

    This is an EXCELLENT video for people looking to start the Star Wars Canon.
    So happy that you talked about Chuck Wendig's Aftermath trilogy. Tragically misunderstood. Ugh. Love that trilogy...and have been defending it for years, pretty much the same way that you just did. Thank you.
    When I talked to friends that know the Prequel series...the most, I suggested Dooku: Jedi Lost...and it seemed like a good story for them to get into the reading of the novels. It's not my favourite, but it had a high profile character, that they could get to know (or know, better) and then progress from there.
    As always, you produce great content. Every single recommendation that you gave, is SPOT ON. Thank you. Will be sending people over to this video...who ask about starting points for the Star Wars Canon books. Thank you.

    Great recommendations! I started my canon journey with Thrawn (the same one you suggested) and it hooked me immediately! If I were to add a 10th book to your list it would be Lost Stars by Claudia Gray. Since it takes place during the events of the original trilogy, its very easy to follow and a fun alternate perspective story. I've recommended it to people who really only know or care about the OT and they've liked it!

    If I had to choose nine, they would be these:
    Leia, Princess of Alderaan (great Leia book and introduces Holdo in more depth)
    Convergence (first adult book chronologically in The High Republic era with an array of interesting characters)
    From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back (huge variety of authors, best overall of the three anthologies)
    Beware the Power of the Dark Side! (suitable for younger readers while being hilarious and entertaining for all ages)
    Heir to the Jedi (well done Luke story in first person)
    Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade (for those who like "start of darkness" stories)
    Dark Disciple (for fans of The Clone Wars)
    The Princess and the Scoundrel (for Han/Leia fans)
    Resistance Reborn (nice bridge between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker)

    Awesome video, these are some of the best places to get into the Canon for sure. Though I have to admit I'm partial to Lords of the Sith. That book felt like the kind of story you'd get in a Legends novel.

    Lords of the sith is very underrated, almost nonstop action and fast pace for the whole book made it a real page turner. Even though we don't get as much of the sith pov as would be expected still a great book to learn more about ryloth AND the vader/palpatine relationship

    what version are those books that have that glossy cover on each one? Ex: I have Light of the Jedi, but the cover is not as glossy as the one in the video. Great video btw, I'm almost done with Light of the Jedi, and can't wait to see what will I read next.

      I have Demco book covers that I put over my regular covers, which helps protect them long term.

    Is canon just the star wars term for expanded universe content? I read halo and we just call the books expanded universe.

    • @jonathankoan
      @jonathankoan  4 місяці тому +3

      Canon refers to the timeline of novels that has been in effect since 2014. That is ongoing now.
      The Expanded Universe refers to the books published from 1991-2014 (plus a few from 1978-1983),
      so it is two different timelines.

    Sadly they retconned the ending of Dark Disciple for no apparent reason. Sad considering it’s a really good novel.

      @@jonathankoan The EU is the cannon timeline

    • @jonathankoan
      @jonathankoan  4 місяці тому +2

      @@heikira438 well, the EU books are certainly canon within its own timeline in that they are meant to work together to form a single continuity, but the official license holders of the IP refer to the Expanded Universe timeline as a Legends timeline, whereas the term for the Canon timeline is being used for the books starting with A New Dawn.
      But as I have said in this and other videos, there are books that I enjoy in both timelines, and books that I don’t enjoy in both timelines, so I largely judge them on a book by book basis.
