- In this video I'll show you how to create a spring using the Spiral tool in Adobe Illustrator, while keeping the spring editable so that you can use the Reshape tool to adjust the height.
The script I use in this video is called 'Merge Overlapped Anchors', and can be found on Github. It's a pack of several handy scripts in one ZIP file, check them out below.

nice Tutorial. Thanks.
❤ nice one! Thanks 🙏
this is such an easy to understand tutorial with so many useful tips that apply to other things as well - thanks for the content :)
I’m glad it helped you. Let me know if there’s something specific you’d like to learn about illustrator, and I’ll try to cover it in a future video.
Thank you. Wpuld you evenly adjust the circumference down so that you could create a funnel effect with the spring (think cyclone)
Thank you.
thank you!!!
Well that was definitely not something I was going to figured out on my own. Thanks!
Nice tutorial! But can it bend circular?
Muito obrigado!
O seu vídeo me salvou muito, que Deus te abençoe! 🟢🟡
You’re welcome, I’m glad it helped you.
thanks for
Thanks for this video. Is there a way to insert a pattern into the spring?
You should be able to add a pattern in the appearance panel as a fill colour. Just make sure all the strokes on the spring are joined by using the shape builder tool, or your spring may not accept a fill. Hope this helps. If there’s any other techniques or tools you’d like to see in a future video let me know.
@ 2:40 how do you bring all de anchor points together?
When you hold ctrl or cmd and move the mouse up, it reduces the space between the loops. So it looks like you’re bringing the anchors together. But you have to do this while you’re holding down the mouse button (when creating your spiral). If you release the mouse button, you’ll have to make a new spiral.
I'm unable to find the 'Merge Overlapped Anchors' script via the link you have in the comments. The linked site has a disclaimer: "Please note that this page is no longer actively maintained. Hiroyuki dedicated this website to all the future updates." The website Hiroyuki indicated give an "Internal server error". Any alternative to get rid of the merges the anchor points?
Hi David, if you click on the ‘view on GitHub’ button, it will take you to the repository. Once there, click on the ‘go to file’ button or there’s a link that says view code. You can either download the js or jsx versions of each script. They are no longer updated, but the functionality is unchanged. So even in the newer versions of Illustrator they should continue working.
@@coldrockdesign Thanks.
the keys you mentioned to use don't work for me. I'm on a PC.
I try to show both key types in the pop ups, for PC and Mac. What part are you trying to do?
Lol the height/ 3 hurt me... Why not just use transform nodes?
Using the height adjustment is more accurate and repeatable. But feel free to squish down the spring however you like.
