I use to look for the Brothers selling pies around DC to buy all the pies I could. I got everyone around me loving em and shocked that they were made of beans.
Pies looks great. To keep your crust from getting ready brown..when you first put your pie crust in the oven..only leave it in the oven for 10 minutes, that way it won't get heavily browned. That will solved the problem. Thanks for the recipe. 😊
These are my favorite and now that I’m not not living in Jersey at the moment, I really miss getting these pies whenever I wanted. You made this look so easy! Pies look amazing and I’m sure they taste amazing too.

I have baked this pie for years. I use 1 1/2 cups navy beans, 1/2 cup milk 1 cup of light corn syrup, 1/2 cup sugar, 3 eggs 1 tsp cinnamon, 1)2 tsp nutmeg, 2 tbsp melted butter, 1 tsp vanilla baked at 350 degrees 60 to 70 minutes. After 20 minutes cover the edges of shell with foil and continue baking. When done, allow to cool for 2 hrs. then refrigerate. Excellent pie you can make anytime. Now you have the recipe. I don't bake my shell, and it still slices well. Try it and let me know. As always all ingredients are at room temperature. Here's some time savers: for the eggs set them in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes; the butter in the microwave for 20 seconds; the corn syrup in hot water for 15 minutes. Good luck with this recipe variation.
They sell pie cake rings that will fit a standard sides pie shells we purchase from the store and you just put it on top like a pan with the middle missing and It will save you the trouble. Hope you can find them.
Wow this looks so goooood! I heard a friend mention a pie called bean pie and I was like Wat!?! Never heard of this! And he mentioned he ate the best bean pie in Los Ángeles. I believe him only cause I know how Asians use red bean for some of their desserts so I was Intrigued. I found your recipe and I can’t wait to try this! I have mande tons of both Pumpkin and sweet Potato Pie! which I love, and he assured me that Bean pie was SO much better. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I wish I could have seen the pie cut. Bet it was good!
Nation of Islam, Sister Clara Muhammad, wife of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, created this Bean Pie recipe many years ago. It is important that Credit and reverence be given to the Originator.
Instead of using foil to keep your pie crust from burning use pie crusts rings you can buy them at a restaurant supply house or you can get them out of gift magazines.
Born and raised Midwest. Never heard of bean pie but making one tomorrow. Looks delicious! Had a black bean cookie at a Chinese restaurant and thought it was chocolate so I’m all in for another treat.
You are 100% right to allow the pies to set overnight, to develop the flavors. I made a bean pie, slice it while it was still warm, and thought it was a failure too. I was going to toss it in the garbage, but talk myself out of it. Place it in the fridge overnight, the next day.... it was so good. Thanks for the recipe
Gonna give this recipe a shot! I have been trying to make a bean pie like my mother she use to make the best bean pies in the world she passed away before I could get the recipe
I just put a big piece of foil over top of both pies like a tent (fold foil and unfold foil to make tent). Works for me. Also, I wanted to add: I put 4 eggs in my recipe (everything else same). More eggs will make a firmer custard right away, and you don’t have to torture yourself 1 whole day!!! Your voice is pleasing. Thank you.
Brown sugar 2 cups All purpose flour Evaporated milk 2 eggs large room temp Cinnamon 11/2tsp Frozen deep dish pie crust 9 inch krogers pre heat to 400 degrees pole holes in it. That looks really good. They make metal and silicone crust covers if you go to someplace like bed bath and beyond. They're like maybe $10 but you use them over and over.
To keep crust from burning around the edges make a pie shield. Tear off a big enough foil to fold in half, then mark off 12ins circle, cut out the circle, open the folded piece of foil, which covers the whole outer edges of your pie.this is your shield tuck the foil around the pie.
lol oooh. I was speaking about Imam Qadriyyah S. Mabel-Doroth where I modified her original recipe. My Brother's Bean pie is a twist on the phrase "Bean pie my brother?"
Y’all did right by pre backing the pie crust. Just don’t leave it in so long it shouldn’t be that brown. It will continue cooking to the way you want in the oven. The pre cook is just to firm up the dough so it won’t be gluey when the pie is done.
I would also like to mention that the original bean pie is made with navy beans you may want to cook them first and then put them in a food mill or back in the day what was referred as a strainer in order to remove the kernels....I'm just saying🤗
As salaam alaikum beloved. I watched your video and was impressed. A key to an excellent pie crust is the type of pie dish you use to make your whole wheat pie crust. I usually use glass or ceramic to make mine. Peace. Sincerely Hatshepsut Muhammad.
Thanks for the recipe * To protect the pie crust U can buy those now you can order them off Amazon also Thanks for use in great norland bean most people say use navy I couldn't remember which one there were only 2 packs of great northern bean only two packs at the dollar store tonight.

While preheating your crust put the foil on the edges then when you fill it the edges can slowly cook during the 35 minute mark meaning take the foil off during the baking state of your pies before the 35 minutes is up
SLOW BAKE BEAN PIE (WITHOUT PRE-BAKING SHELL/CRUST) AT 250 F FOR 2 HOURS OR UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN (YOUR OVEN MAY VARY). THE BASIC SCIENTIFIC PREMISE IS THAT ALL INGREDIENTS ARE EDIBLE AS A SLURRY (WITHOUT THE CRUST). THE ONLY BAKING YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IS TO SLOWLY BRING THE SHELL TO TEMPERATURE WHERE YOU CAN MONITOR IT FOR THE FIRST INITIAL TIMING PARAMETERS. THEN ONCE YOU’VE ESTABLISHED TEMPERATURE/TIME GUIDELINES, YOU CAN BASICALLY WALK AWAY AND COME BACK FOR THE PERFECTLY DONE BEAN PIE EVERY TIME. NOTE: YOU CAN’T ESTABLISH THE 250 FAHRENHEIT BAKING TIME BY POKING HOLES OR TOOTHPICKING THE FILLING. THE FILLING IS EDIBLE. IT IS NOT COOKING! THE PIE DOUGH IS COOKING. THEREFORE, THE PIE DOUGH MUST COOL DOWN NATURALLY TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE TASTE TESTING. THAT’S WHY PIES TASTE BETTER THE NEXT DAY. YOU HAVE TO GIVE THE HOT INGREDIENTS TIME TO SETTLE INTO THE FLAVOR PROFILE. MOST PEOPLE DON’T FIND THIS TO BE THE PROPER WAY TO MASS PRODUCE BEAN PIES, SO THEY FOREGO QUALITY FOR PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY. BIG MISTAKE! THIS IS A PROCESS DONE WITH LOVE (THAT IS OUR SELLING POINT). THIS IS NOT A PRODUCT COMMERCIALLY PRODUCED; NOR IS IT TO BE MISHANDLED LIKE SLAVE FOOD. 🤨😏🤓🤫✌️🖤💪🏽👌✅ LOVE THE VIDEO.
I believe using the flour makes the top of the pie crunchy and not like the original bean pie. I've made bean pies for over 40 yrs and I have found that flour doesn't work for me. It's so nice seeing all of these versions of recipes on UA-cam. BUT there is NOTHING like the original bean pie from back in the 70's. I have yet to master that taste from back in the day at Mosque #12 in Philly!❤
Definitely would vouch for serving the day after. First time I made this, I served it in the same day, to rather meh results. The next time I made it, I let it rest overnight. It was uncanny how much better it tasted. And for you Dominicans out there, I also recommend adding some ground cloves and substitute some condensed milk for coconut milk. It's just like Habichuela Con Dulce! EDIT: Hardest part was putting the thing in the oven. A lot of batter kept spilling on the crust, foil on. This gave it the appearance of burnt ends (it wasn't; it was just dried-up batter). EDIT EDIT: As to the foil problem, the right kind of foil helps. Ironically, budget-brand aluminum foil works better for this than the heavy-duty big-brand stuff. They're thinner and more pliable, thus easier to crimp closely to the crust.
They sell covers for the pie edges so u don’t have to do that aluminum foil on the edges. So worth the few extra dollars there are some pie pans that come with them.
I would measure the circumference of the pie shell and cut ✂️ about an extra inch around as well as cut the circle/center out to be able to pour the batter and tuck the outter foil edge.
I’ve always wanted to try bean pie. I grew up in Gary Indiana and I’m Mexican. There use to be Nation of Islam men selling these pies on 41st and Broadway. But every time they approached my car they would totally ignore me. Oh well.
You only poke holes in unbaked pie shells when you bake them first for a cooked custard pie. Never prick your pie shells when pie is baked in shell. You are lucky if your pie mixture has never run under the unbaked shell if it is pricked first. Keep on cooking, man!!!
My first try epic fail my second try total success those two pies did not last a week in my house. Thank you so much. Oh yeah and I used dried navy beans and did the overnight soak method.
I tried baking this pie last night and it was alswome. Now about the crust turning dark, all you have to do is cook for 10 minutes instead of 15mins then allow the crust to set for 20 minutes or so then add the filling and bake as usual.
There are pie rings that you can get at Walmart that they have some that are selected and some that are preformed aluminum rings hard aluminum rings that you can just put over the pie slide it in the oven
i’m boiling my beans with water seasoned with cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, cardimom, allspice, ginger, & nutmeg & making homemade pie crust

Don't cook the crust, pour the filling in while crust is raw. Pies are one of my best. I wrote the ingredients down Bro&Sis. Good job.

No need to cover it, I would change the cooking time to 350, so all of the ingreedients will cook evenly.
And stick a knife through the middle when you think it is done.

You only poke holes in unbaked pie shells when you bake them first for a cooked custard pie. Never prick your pie shells when pie is baked in shell. You are lucky if your pie mixture has never run under the unbaked shell if it is pricked first. Keep on cooking, man!!!
Oops!! Didn't know you were going to bake them first!!! Keep on cooking, man!!

My first try epic fail my second try total success those two pies did not last a week in my house. Thank you so much. Oh yeah and I used dried navy beans and did the overnight soak method.
I'm going to try to make it tonight.
How did it turn out?
It was great. Thank You
Your pies look soooooooo darn tootin' good!!!!!
I tried baking this pie last night and it was alswome. Now about the crust turning dark, all you have to do is cook for 10 minutes instead of 15mins then allow the crust to set for 20 minutes or so then add the filling and bake as usual.
Glad it turned out good for you and thanks for the tips! Hopefully bean pie becomes a staple! It's good
There are pie rings that you can get at Walmart that they have some that are selected and some that are preformed aluminum rings hard aluminum rings that you can just put over the pie slide it in the oven
