This is cool. I always wondered if there was video footage of those "Bluebirds" in action.

Nice footage of the NKP and NYC passenger trains. It looked like one of the more Mail and Express heavy trains could have been the Iroquois.

Great video of Cleveland and Shaker Heights before everything started going down the dumper. The newest vehicles I saw was 1961 Plymouth Valiant, Ford station wagon, and a Chevy Biscayne convertible.Everything else was earlier, so that places this video squarely in 1961.

a biscayne ragtop with a small-block would be worth a grip today....

This is more than just the Shaker Heights Rapid Transit. Much of the early part of the video is excellent footage of the CTS (Cleveland Transit System) "Blue Bird" rapid transit cars, which ran exclusively on what is now known as the Red Line.

the NYC tracks were electrified during the days of steam....you can still see remnants of the electric catenary supports

there was an electric road that ran from akron all the way to terminal tower- never got to see the trains it was so long ago, but i used to ride my 10-speed along the right-of-way in the 70's. there are still some steel catenary towers along highbridge trail (which used to double as a siding for coal trains and as a return loop for akron's howard street streetcars so they could get back to the barn near the gorge power plant and cuyahoga falls avenue) the ABC railroad was completed in the 1860's- one of the depots still stands at old eight road and route 82 between macedonia and bedford/walton hills. we used to raft the cuyahoga gorge and used the old penstock pipe to portage back to the dam. now thats all gorge metropark and now you have to get a permit to kayak in the river since first energy deeded the akron side of the gorge/dam to metroparks. fun times back in the 60's and early 70's. theyve also ripped out the pipe so kids cant climb and walk on it- boo-hoo. the little hydro-powerhouse at the lower end of the pipe was incredible- too bad it couldn't have been preserved.

Those passenger cars being pulled by the locomotive, is that what we know as Amtrak?

Correct, the private freight railroads ran their own passenger trains until the creation of Amtrak in 1971.

Amtrak did not come into existence until 1971. The passenger trains shown were operated by the New York Central, as well as the Nickel Plate.

not back then- no amtrak before the 70's. i have some amtrak phase 1 equipment on my N scale layout- which is set in imperial valley, ca. circa 1973 at the moment.
