Secretariat was an anomaly -SUPER HORSE and he also had to be put down due to hoof problems. Running these young stallions hat like this decreases their life span. They chose the safety of a horse over fake fame and $$. The truth is, Richie will make more doing races when he is at 100%. Ruffian a filly broke her leg in a race. The money is there now and they have nothing to prove that can't be proven by keeping him fresh and sound for the Belmont. Many horse lovers have always complained that the Triple Crown trips are too close together. These are Colts and Fillies (only two years old). Their knees won't even "set" for another 2 years. Their lungs and other organs need time to heal and recover from the Derby. It's always been that way. I truly appreciate the fervor and panache of this team for doing what's right. You know if you go back and watch you'll see Epicenter & Zandon we're almost coasting to the finish line, in hindsight both jockeys should have waited instead of trying to battle each other for the lead in the begining of the stretch, that battle took a lot out of those horses in a fast past race, meanwhile Rich Strike coasted for like 7/8ths of the race and had the stamina at the finish for a second gear. It really shows how good Zandon & Epicenter are because even with all that it was close.
Richie's speed reminds you of Secretariat? I was going to say, what a mistake the owner of Secretariat made when she let him race Preakness. We all know what happened. Secretariat won triple crown when he was 3 year old, same age as Rich Strike today. Well, everyone is entitled to making his or her choices.
Doing right by the horse should be commended. It too often seems to be forgotten -- from $3,000 claimers to top-tier stakes runners -- due to connections being blinded by runaway egoes......or trying to squeeze one more paycheck outta a racer with glaring declining form.

The owners are realistic that their horse needs a distance of ground to come in from the clouds like he did in the Derby where he had just enough distance to get the job done. The Preakness is just so many yards shorter than the Derby, or they would have to make their move sooner. The Preakness is a much smaller field to have to deal with than the Kentucky Derby so that same run from way behind should be easier. Still, they are doing good by the horse in this instance. It's the wear and tear of the Triple Crown races that can shorten a horse's racing career. It adds up.

From a Kentucky prospective, I have watched greedy owners do unspeakable things, like keeping a mare alive just long enough to foal. Maybe there is hope for this industry!
Watched the 2022 KY Derby several times...and imo, that race was a million in one run. That said, he won & his stud fee potential outweigh odds of injury if runs again~protect investment~Retire him NOW! Plenty of other horses in that stable to win reg races!!

If he gets burnt out by the Triple Crown schedule, then he's not a horse of Triple Crown calibur . It's no worse a schedule than any of the others have been asked to handle. It's OK. Better than a serious injury, but still disappointing...

These 3 races every year are meant for a Triple Crown horse. If you think you horse can't run these 3 races, in the 6 weeks time, then don't even bother entrying your horse into the Kentucky Derby.. it's not fair to the other 19 horses who raced in the Derby. If Rich Strike doesn't race the Preakness then he has no business running the Belmont.
They didn’t think that he couldn’t run all three, they made the best decision based on how he’s doing after this race. No one knows exactly how your horse will do after a race, and many other owners would push him on through, the chance of winning is not worth the risk to the horse. Good call.

Pimlico favors front runners. He had no chance of winning the Preakness. He will run in the Belmont at 1 1/2 miles
That makes more sense then saying it's for his health. I watched all of Rich Strikes runs and he's slow to start. So it makes sense now.

A little disappointing to hear this. It would’ve been cool to see him in a ll three races. I’m glad they’re thinking of the horse, but it would move been a cool story to hear if the long shot won the triple crown. Excited for the Belmont though.

If he gets burnt out by the Triple Crown schedule, then he's not a horse of Triple Crown calibur . It's no worse a schedule than any of the others have been asked to handle. It's OK. Better than a serious injury, but still disappointing...
They could push him on through and take a chance, just like some other triple crown winners have chosen to do. No way to know if he’s of a TC calibur, since he don’t get to run. Amazing horse, and amazing owners.

I'm all for the welfare of the horse,and what's best for him, but is there something wrong with him? Why wouldn't he be running in the Preakness if hes healthy. It could be a missed opportunity.
Or a blow-out loss. The Preakness is one of the shorter races. RIch Strike is a slow starter, and needs a long race to win.

People thought that of Secretariat as, but yet he won the Preakness and then went on to win the Belmont with one of the greatest lead margins in racing history. His trainer and owner both said Rich Strike likes to run. It sounds like he does better in Longer distance races. His riding style reminds me of Secretariats. You never know what could happen.

These 3 races every year are meant for a Triple Crown horse. If you think you horse can't run these 3 races, in the 6 weeks time, then don't even bother entrying your horse into the Kentucky Derby.. it's not fair to the other 19 horses who raced in the Derby. If Rich Strike doesn't race the Preakness then he has no business running the Belmont.
They didn’t think that he couldn’t run all three, they made the best decision based on how he’s doing after this race. No one knows exactly how your horse will do after a race, and many other owners would push him on through, the chance of winning is not worth the risk to the horse. Good call.

These people who own Rich Strike are happy with just the Kentucky Derby win, they never meant for this horse to be a Triple Crown winner, so they shouldn't of entered the Derby. There are horses who entered all 3 races, because its cheaper that way, thinking they would win all 3 races. Like Epicentre.. You are better off racing Rich Strike the next two races and then retire him for good after that.
@@peacelove9689it cost the owners of Rich Strike 200,000 to entry .the Derby, and it costs 150,000 to enter the Preakness, which I'm sure they don't want to pay. It's 50,000 for the Belmont.

The horse that WINS the Derby damned sure belonged... it's the other 19 that might be questioned. Rich Strike is a fabulous runner, and may well win the Belmont. We shall see just how good he is then. The Preakness is too soon and too short for him. But why should a horse that can win the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont not be in those races? There is no reason in the world. That''s the ONE horse that should be in them!
@@rustyreid Only the Best, will be present and win all 3 races. Rich Strikes owners are happy with the Kentucky Derby, they know he has no shot at it. That Derby was set up for Rich Strike. Had Leon not did what he did. Taking his horse to the rail as quickly as he did. Leon could of ridden Rich Strike 4 wide, the whole race too and get caught in blistering fractions. But he didn't. So Kudos to Leon, for chilling behind and staying close to the rail, just waiting for the right time. Epicenter and Simplification are racing in the Preakness, I guess they are stronger.
