    For a name for the sinkhole , how about just “The sink” So people driving by can throw teabags in the sink, at least it also would deal with trash.

    Being stuck on console vanilla, sometimes when it comes to slips roads I find if I build it initially with the basic dirt road I get a little more control. The Highway slip road automatically bends and snaps much more that the dirt road I find. Especially in tight situations like the area you were working on when the sink hole notice came in. Once I’ve built it with the dirt road I then just upgrade it to the highway ramp :)

    Instead of having two highway offramps coming from the roundabout to a 6 lane road, just connect the two highway offramps to the junction directly with no 6 lane section at all.

    Thank you for reminding me why I don't play vanilla Cities Skylines.
    I would add a lot more pedestrian paths and transit options. It seems like there are many personal vehicles, so adding pedestrian bridges/tunnels across the highway may help.

    31:50 for that problem you are thinking: just delete the 4way road and connect the seperate oneway roads direkt to the intersection if it is possible. that wouled help to stop at the one node.

    I think there the garbage issue has something to do with a bug in disasters. Happens every now and then after a disaster has happened. You should look that up.

    48:45 -- Finishes tearing out the roundabout, acknowledges that the lovers of roundabouts go absolutely nuts because of it, and immediately an earthquake warning.
    Coincidence? Unlikely.

      LOL I noticed that too. The time-lapse of the roundabout jump cuts to a 4-way intersection with a giant ditch next to it. Hmmmm

    27:05 your turn-around-about could connect into the slip lane to the highway as well so that they don't have to go all the way back and then turn around again to use the slip lane

    I learned that some traffic problems could be related to when you overload an intersection. What I mean with this is that people wants to go from A to B and viceversa, but if the same intersection also handles C to D, E to F, then we have chaos. (Of course I'm simplifying the problem). The solution is to give more options and even move some entry points to a different place

      What I mean is that you have the city divided by the highways and the only road (as far as I could see) was the one that also serviced as an entrance to the city. Basically you have the guy that wants to go shopping blocking the lady that is transporting some goods into the city :P

    I've noticed that waste transfer facilities and a few incinerators for them to empty into seems to be the best combo for handling trash

    In vanilla you shouldnt use stop signa as “give way” signs in roundabouts. You should just let it run as is without stop signs

    31:46 Instead of having that little piece of road, the highway roads could connect directly into the junction. I think that could work better

    I tend to put a recycling center next to most of the transfer facilities, it helps collecting trash more efficiently, and in my mind it is more realistic (in a green society) having most of the garbage recycled and then the excess “unrecyclable” trash gets transported somewhere to be dealt with…

    Biffa, you probably should add another tram or metro line from one side off the highway to the other. At the moment it seem like there's only the one metro line from Antarcteaca city center 🤔

    as an idea biffa, those four rounda-a-bouts together, a good look at about 16m46s, why not delete them all and put in a massive one way ring there? a somewhat square round-a-bout?
    at 18m29s, could have probably just extended that one rail tunnel for the space you needed.

    41:24 I don't think that path ever got fixed. Not a big deal.
    44:02 Road never got reconnected after earthquake in earlier episode.

    Biffa I love this city, seeing the problems with vanilla traffic, I have started a vanilla snow map myself inspired by AntarTEAca I’m 40000 pop behind you atm but taking all the notes for future traffic problems. Thank you

      road hirarcy and give people options to get around, preferably without cars and you are golden. Think of it this way 30 people in cars means 30 trips ( 15 if 2 people in a car ) = 1 trip with a bus ( 30 people ) or half of a tram ( trams hold 60 if I recall ). To many people forgot that basic rule and try to force it with traffic manager.

      @@martinclare3114 trams also have tram only roads as options and if you plan for those the tram can absorb ALOT of people. Gothenburg in sweden for example have over 160 kilometers of tram track for 9 lines ALONE. That is before we calculate 20 ish buslines, 2 ferrielines ( as gothenburg is coastal with archipelago ) and a developed bike network atop of that.
      Several dutch cities and copenhagen ( the danish capital ) have fully intergrated bike networks that move more people per hour than a midsizes american towns 3 1/2 lane each way road do. The average speed on those roads are 13-16 kilometers per hour thanks to traffic digestion....bikers move at about 16-17 on average if decent roadcondition. Trust me the golden rule of the less forced car traffic work....and yes this include city skylines as well. Ofc exchange any of these for subway, monorail etc if those fit better for you if you got the dlc.

    I rarely comment, but was just having a laugh over this holiday business. It’s nice you thought of us, because while Biffa takes a holiday playing and making videos, I’m going to spend a lot of my holiday watching Biffa and working on my traffic. You’re a gem, Biffa! I hope you enjoy some lovely time off. About ripping out that interchange, I say go for it. It a hot mess an I’m sure you can do better.

    You could put a slip lane in off of the road that comes off the highway on to the round about. The road into the little industrial area by the university comes almost all the way up, just connect it.

    Just circle it back around so it enters on the right side so it doesn't cross over traffic and keeps it off the round about

    Hey Biffa, what a tricky situation you have with the traffic there on vanilla. Would it be worth reviewing your public transport in that area to reduce the number of cars going through the roundabouts and clogging them up?

    Auto empty mod spoiled me a bit, got tired of stuff being full or empty until I fixed it :) The game is so much better with mods, need more New Tealand! Happy Holidays to you and your family, Biffa!

    The roundabound you removed at the end was a good call, you can even remove that road coming from the other roundabound and let the traffic from that road to get deeper on their own collector if they want to cross to that side of the map/city, you are adding to many connections too close to the highway between these big city blocks/area. If you make the traffic to get out of the highway to the area collector and force them to go way deeper on that area to then cross to another big area/collector, it will work better

    I wish they would do a road focused dlc, where they rework all roads, we should have more control over roads and have tram, bike lane versions etc of all the sizes from 2 to 6 and add 8 lane roads as well. The road system have always felt a bit clunky imo.
    Imagine place your 2-4-6-8 lane road, then select another thing to then toggle / add bus, taxi, tram, or bike lanes.

      Another nice feature would be to allow zoning that's set back from the road so that the buildings are connected yet there's room to eventually widen the road without having to immanent domain demolish all of them. Also, allowing some buildings to go up without a road access, especially things like metro stations that just need pedestrian access. Mixed zoning and medium density would also help a lot too.

    Crazy Idea... instead of 4 roundabouts managing all of the traffic, what if you build 1 giant roundabout in the underpass? Kinda like one of those roundabout highway junctions you used to make but bigger? Love the series.

    I wonder if he has forgotten than in vanilla you can use zones to ban certain traffic like heavy traffic etc, that way you can force them to take another route.

    adding recycling centers to some waste transfer will help it and adding 3 incinerators in 3 locations that way it your trash wont build up as much

    As someone who only plays vanilla: traffic lights are basically only used for esthetic appeal because a free-for-all is 99% of the time going to cause less backup (unless there's a large amount of pedestrian traffic, in which case having stop lights helps separate the movements of the cars from constant crossing and can sometimes improve flow). Stop signs are only useful in a situation where there is VERY little traffic trying to enter from that direction because with any sort of volume, stop signs also cause huge backup. They can be useful though to prevent cars from immediately entering a high priority movement and disrupting the flow of traffic if that's becoming an issue at a particular junction.

    Biffa, I think you might be able to decrease the amount of highway traffic by making a few more road connections underneath the highway. Most of the traffic going through seems to be people from your newer city sections back into the downtown area.

    To help solve the traffic try getting rid of the connection between the roundabout and the four-way stop (used to be a roundabout). You have two parallel arterials that should be able to handle the traffic but it looks like the vanilla AI is routing the roundabout traffic to the four-way stop instead of spreading it into the neighborhood further south.

    I think you should hire a City Planner to come and rip out that highway and replace it with a new connective roadway just like the recent road reconstruction in lovely city of Verde Beach. It would be a cracking episode!! :)

    The questionable round about with the water tower in the middle, the one we spent the most time looking at, can you move the on ramp back on to the highway to the other side? It’d mean less traffic crowding that small little area. You wouldn’t have boulevard, on ramp, off ramp all in a tight cluster.

    Isn't the big issue with that whole roundabout that there are not any other roads available to access the highway? So many vehicles are heading in that direction and choking it off because they have nowhere else to go to?

    40:20 instead of changing the length of the 6 lane road, why not have the 2 lane motorway all the way from the roundabout straight into the junction? that would get rid of the awkward stopping where the 2 lane motorway joins the 6 lane road.
    you could upgrade the end of the 2 lane motorway to 3 lanes just before the junction.
    and you could have a 2 lane motorway straight from the junction to the roundabout

    pure dumbells struggle, like any roundabout service interchange, when there's too high a volume of traffic. however, i think there's a parclo/dumbell hybrid that works nicely (whether it's buildable in vanilla idk)
    skipping the roundabout for that highway traffic would've worked if it was turning right instead of left (so bringing it out just in front of the roundabout instead of the other side of the road). also, the 4-way junction that replaced the other roundabout could have a grade-separated left turn added since most of the traffic from that direction wanted to turn left and that's what was causing the roundabout to back up

    Biffa does a whole episode defending roundabouts against Yumbl’s test, then has to rip out a roundabout and replace it with a lighted intersection. 😆

    at 39:02 you can make the road segment of the round-a-bout between the highway off ramp connection, and the dumbbell connection into a 4 lane road to effectively give them a slip lane while still allowing them to pick one of the original 3 on the rare occasion they aren't going down the dumbbell.

    Two things - firstly where you have the large roundabout which has the crossroads close to it, why not have a 3 lane road off the r'bout directly to the junction and the same running back towards the r'bout from the junction, that will eliminate the node issue which you always create when doing your normal approach.
    The other one is the junction you placed on the highway, next to a area where a road just ended in a r'bout. Why not use this r'bout for the junction feeding slip roads off/onto it and putting the through route in a tunnel under the highway to reconnect with the other part of it again.
    You always go on about leaving vehicles space and then with these two locations you seem to have forgotten that.

    I do 6 lane to 2 lane highway to roundabout all the time in vanilla. The 6 lanes needs to be 3 or 4 squares away from the roundabout and then the 2 lane highways will give you enough room for a good looking connection. I can usually do the connection with only the single stabilizing roundabout road. The trick is to place the first 2 lane road, then delete the stabilizing roundabout road and then place the second 2 lane road.

    Seems to me like roundabouts will work better in vanilla if you split the roads because you don't have access to giveway signs but only stop signs. If you have the space and traffic is heavy enough to warrant it of course.

    I think you should combine all of the areas where the roundabouts are into a large junction and then split them off.

    Hello Biffa, happy holidays to you and your family. I think removing that round about is the answer. The problem is it dumps too many cars/trucks in one direction at once. Maybe try a road from the round about to the industry area.

    "Goldwoman Estates" makes me think of the song "Gold Dust Woman" by Fleetwood Mac (also covered by Hole). I dunno if that's intentional though.

    Wasn't it so that the waste processing unit won't work without waste collecting.
    The collectors will collect but not dispose of it, the procesing unit will dispose but won't collect.
    Haven't played in a while myself so can't remember for sure, should say so in the building description.

      The processing plant is supposed to collect the garbage from the collection sites, but it's only got so many trucks. I've noticed that the incineration process can't keep up with the garbage a city produces, so while its got a ton of storage capacity, your processing plants will eventually back up because they can only burn so much at once. I've had the best results by pairing them with a couple recycling centers, since those can help with trash collection and distribute some raw materials to nearby industry.

    If you put pedestrian paths over your busy intersections. And a dedicated bicycle path will help with the traffic immensely. As soon as I can get paths I put them everywhere so people can walk.

    The most important thing is to check, from where are they coming, and where they want to get to. Then you could fix problems by just adding better connections for the people.

    Hey Biffa, I'm viewing this on phone and don't have the capability to take a screenshot but I would replace the remaining roundabouts with timed traffic lights (this town is proving Yumbl right) and build direct connectors from the highway's side-roads to the airport roadway and eliminate its end roundabout. There's plenty of space to build the them in the present interchange.

    I feel like the vanilla traffic gets to difficult when my city's get to megalopolis I always stop there and start a new city because I can not deal with it.

    48:50 Maybe make a Jughandle? A highway 1-lane ramp that grows above(or below) the intersection. Maybe you can make the road from the roundabout a bit slower because if the Jughandle is longer but will take less time to travel the traffic would chose it before the intersection, right? Would be a lot easier in modded since then you could just forbid left turn in the intersection.

    The issue with the roundabout building up may be resolved by removing that tiny bit of 4 lane road and just running the roundabout connections straight from the intersection (big one closest to Borky park). It may not actually work but it’s a suggestion to help aid the flow of traffic. Vanilla Skylines sucks balls big time. Glad you’re able to stay relatively on top of it all

    A wonderful thing happened last week. My town got our first roundabout. Unfortunately the people here do not understand roundabouts and so they're treating it like a four way stop with a bit in the middle. I have been trying to educate people, but they seem very opposed to learning the joys of roundabouts. It is a bitter sweet time.

    It looks like roundabout-about)) I bet an extra underground connection between crest heights and crest district under highway will help. And as we discovered on test map, combination of roundabout and traffic lights work perfectly fine at some conditions. Also, you can give access to one side of the highway, if there's turn around next to entrance.

    38:17 I would try to by deleting the left on of the Y split on that offlane and see if the cars go smoother by using both roundabouts then the clogged offlane OR
    create a sort of slip lane that is going over straight over the highway going around the 2 roundabouts straight into the district where they want to go !

    I usually only use the waste transfer and it really works well of you don't force Them to empty. Truck from the big sites go out on their own to pick Up stuff from the collection places. But I Play with mods, so ...

    I’d rip all four round a bouts out and reformat that whole interchange. It feels like a mid-mash of road networks that were built for lower capacity, and will never be able to keep up with the new demand. Crazy idea: what if you applied your results from your interchange experiments? Isn’t that one super multi level interchange the best performer so far? What if you tried that in there?

    With your bad junction, this is what I would do...
    Take the offramp. Expand one section to 2 lanes. Create a split that has one lane going to the 4 lane road, and another going to the roundabout. The ones wanting to go into the primary city will take the offramp to the four lane road. Everyone else will take the roundabout.

    Yeah, roundabouts aren't a all around solution! 🤣
    Besides having 2 roundabouts on each side of the highway with a normal road connecting them definitely can cause issues. Too much traffic can be pulled then squeezed in a 60km/h road with bad access angle.
    Either pull all roundabouts and do proper divided highway lane distribution (implying there isn't too much traffic for few connections anyway) or rework the area with either fewer round abouts with proper highway ramps divided in and out or at least connect everyone with only fast highway ramp connections.

    13:14 turn the whole thing into one long oblongabout. Also the area 'above', (move screen so that the crossroads is at the left and the dumbell to the right). The slipway which comes in from the top - could there be a single way offramp connecting to what appears to be an industry area?

    This is why I don't tend to watch vanilla serieses, it's so frustrating having to fight the game to do even the simplest things and being forced to use the "poor man's giveways" as you said 😂😂 (really The Lazy Man's give way, since using them everywhere represents we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas, but it's all the game gives you, so again like you said, welcome to vanilla..)
