Some other information I forgot to include in the video
Growing conditions:
Sunlight- This tree receives partial light where is gets morning and evening sun, but shaded during the middle of the day. Starfruit do not like the direct midday light/heat
Water- Water thoroughly and place container where it will be allowed to drain thoroughly. Allow the soil to to dry down in between waterings. Starfruit do not like wet feet! (Roots)
Good luck guys!
I started a starfruit from seed about a month ago and now it's a little seedling. I like how the starfruit plant looks and I like starfruit.
I’m glad that I’m not the only one with this passion about fruit trees and everything related 🥰 today I will starting the germination of this passion seeds 😎
Hey, how did it turn out? I am starting mine tomorrow.
@@VeronicaWilliams_4u didn’t work 🫢
I start minds in seeds so early great
Beautiful tree. Just found this video and it gave me hope! I too started some seeds from store bought fruit. I had lost hope since they were in the soil for a long time but after a few 90° days they have begun to sprout.
You just got me all fired up! I have 30+ of these sprouting right now!
How exciting! Those flowers are beautiful, they look like little frangipanis!
They are so beautiful! They were all over the tree!
So encouraging bud! I have 3 little trees that I started 3 1/2 years ago but have stunted them but being really slow in up potting them for fear of dreaded root rot... but they’re getting up there in size now so I’m excited. I have purchased grafted keri that I happen to play around with in cross pollination just to see what comes of the mixes. No big hopes but should be fun. You’re great btw! Love your genuine heart! Keep em coming!
Wow, incredible experiment and wonderful video! Love your channel
Awesome! I love growing from grocery store fruits and vegetables.
Omgosh I luv this. I just got a star fruit and dragon fruit that I want to grow.
thanks for this dude! these fruits are so fun to eat :)) your skill is amazing!
Just came across this video while searching for information on Starfruit. I used to be able to buy Starfruit in large supermarkets, but they no longer sell them. I managed to buy a pack of Starfruit seed and I am going to try one as a test. The seed is currently soaking overnight. I will have to keep mine indoors until larger (if it gets that far) as I live in a cold, stormy part of the UK. When you described the watering, it was similar to the way that citrus are treated. Are Starfruit part of the citrus family? I would be interested to know about its tolerance to cold from your experience. Early days for me, but I am keen to try exotics, even if most only see the best of the summer months outdoors. Your tree is a beautiful tree in its own right, the flowers were stunning - real eye-catchers. You must be so proud of achieving that stage of growth. Thanks for sharing.
Sooooo cool! My kids all want to try growing some now....but they don't sell them locally. Maybe I can sweet talk my sister living in AZ to send us some seeds........Great video, so fun!
I actually started these from fruit I bought at the grocery store so you might keep an eye out for it. But yeah they are very easy to start from seed as long as the seed is fully mature (wasn’t picked too underripe). Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks for watching!
Great results, well done, excellent video
Nice work, hope it’s still doing well
Really cool I had two last year in my green house but they didn’t make the winter I grew them from seed trying again here in western Washington 👍 cool video my lemon tree and avocado tree did just fine
AWESOME! Another challenge!
Yeah man they’re easy to grow for sure
Yes.... Thank you.
AWESOME🌴
Thanks man! I was pretty pumped with these haha. Can’t wait to see how they end up tasting! Thanks for watching!
Wow, thank you very much. I will grow now.
We have a 1.5 year old star fruit tree same like you started from a seed from the grocery store and we want to know what we need to do , right now its tall and skinny and we are wondering if we should prune it and how to do it ? Is there a way we can send you a picture of it cause I dont thunk we can on here
How is your star fruit tree doing? Any updates? Any video?
Very good
Very cool :) How was the fruit?
It was excellent!! Wish I could’ve got it on video but it was just the right balance of sweet and tart
Sounds great :) Some of the names varieties are pretty average, worth holding onto ;)
If it gives you an idea, I took some to one our fruit expert and he measured the brix and it was at 10 brix. He says most named varieties are around 6-8.
@@TheMoreYouGrow zayyuummmm. That's literally the potential new variety right there no joke. A star fruit that's sweeter than most of the ones on the market is pretty darn good. I've actually even heard that if you grow one that ends up being sour that it isn't even that bad either.
are you in tennessee? We are and I am gathering up tropical ideas because I miss the hot weather of florida lol. Love seeing tennesseans growing tropicals.
I am from north Texas 😊
Are they self pollinating?
Your tree looks so healthy!!
Yes I did!
You can own me by sending some star fruit seeds or a star fruit it self.
I couldn't find it in my country. 😭😭😭😭😭
I love this tree with me in my little garden.
those are everywhere in cities in mexico full sun.. but yea im gonna get some seeds from da store
Are the blossoms as sweet and strong smelling as Meyer Lemon blossoms? My starfruit tree was not any larger after a year than yours was in the one gallon pot or whatever size it was after you transplanted the one you started from seed from the small pot.
They smell great but lemon blossoms will always be more fragrant.
Great video and How old is the starfruit tree from seed to flowering and fruiting??
I wondered the same thing.
Super super cool! I wish I can get some seeds we dont have this fruit in groceries stores in my country Tunisia. Can you please send me some Thanks!
Oh my goodness, I'm so excited I found this video!! I've been looking for starfruit tree growing support for a couple years now! I have one almost three foot tall tree that is about three years old and it really still looks fragile and baby-tree-like.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and keep it indoors- I have a grow light on it now and since then it has exploded in growth, for sure. Maybe that's what it's been missing.
I'd love to chat about what else I can do to get this guy fruiting!
I read somewhere about pruning to encourage branching and I did "prune" but all it did was shock the plant and it almost died. Anyway...I'd love to know what tips you can give me. What is the best fertilizer?
I've also got two other babies that are about 5-6 months old and maybe that tall in inches.
Thanks!
Do you still have it? how is the tree doing? Maybe any video you could post?
@@mr.v3061 no we don’t have the tree anymore. I found info that it would never fruit because a starfruit tree needs to be a clone of the parent plant. Kumquats are the same, and I’m sure other fruiting trees are too. I tried pruning it but all it ever did was continue to grow straight up. Oh well. It was a fun experience!
@@DonicaTibbetts Wait, it needs to be a clone of the parent for the same kind of fruit. But a tree grown from seed does give fruit... a fruit with a new taste :)
In this video the person showed a tree with fruit. I have one myself and i hope it gives fruit one day, but first it has to become stronger. I try to prune it a lot for a stronger base.
@@mr.v3061 no, grown from seed do not produce fruit. For some reason. Good luck tho
Very cool! I have some seed I received from ECHO in Florida and will be planting it next year. I’m curious how long it will take to start producing here in the tropics.
I’m interested to hear how they taste!
Should have fruit within a 1-2 years I would imagine! Yeah I’m excited to see how they are as well! I’ve got some really cool seeds that I will be collecting soon that I think would do well in your tropic climate if you’re interested!
The More You Grow - Absolutely!
Just let me know when and how to get them to ya 😁
The More You Grow - I’ll be back in the states in about two weeks for 10 days. I don’t know if that’s enough time. If not, I have some friends coming to visit in early December. Please send an email to big e plus 4 @ Gmail . Com (minus the spaces) and I will send my address.
I think it tastes like a subtle grape juice and apple flavor. Very delicate and nice.
Yes! Thank you for posting this! Although after seeing this video I’ve realized my tree gets way too much sun. Which is probably a contributing factor to why mine has always done so poorly.
My tree is in the ground (FL sandy soil) and has been for at least five years and has not flowered -_- ever. This tree was a gift. It’s sad. And it now it’s a provider of shade for other plants.
I do have five seedlings that are doing fantastic! Grown from produce stand purchased fruit. I just reported them with a mixture of porting soil, perlite and peat moss. Should I have done more? And is this considered a citrus plant? Should I be giving them citrus fertilizer?
Thank you again! I’m stoked I came across your channel! Any advice on the in ground tree is greatly appreciated as well!
Yeah the in ground tree might be getting too much sun, but you might could get a cattle panel and make an arch over it, plant some vining crop on it for some shade. Starfruit like moisture, but do not do well with soggy soil/wet feet so keep an eye on that a well. Hope it works out for you!
I'm near you in Conroe so our conditions are similar. I'm bout to germinate some. How long do they take to sprout and what worked best for you. Plz share thx
They come up in 7-14 days or so. All I did was plant them in moist potting soil. Once they sprout and get established I let the soil dry down a bit in between watering. Other than that they are pretty simple. Just give them enough pot space as they grow. They also don’t like a lot of hot or direct sun
My starfruit tree is 2-3 years old. It has a lot of new growth up at the top, but the leaves are turning yellow and crispy and falling off. I’m so sad because I want to help it live its best life. I heard it could be from an iron or manganese deficiency. I’ve been fertilizing, but it’s still losing leaves and turning yellow besides the new growth. Idk what I am doing wrong. It’s on my balcony right now, in bright light but shaded.
I moved from NJ to AZ so maybe the lack of humidity has something to do with it? But I have seen people grow star fruit in the desert no problem.
I also started Starfruit trees, mine just turned 1 year old, but they are really small still, the biggest is about 12 inches. They barely grow leaves, most turn yellow and crispy similar to yours. I keep them indoors as outside is too windy, but they also dislike my greenhouse in any season. My guess is also nutrient deficiency, but also didnt help much. Then after some research, i believe the it has problems to grow because the pH value in the substrate could be wrong. I haven't had the chance to test it, as those tests are hard to get and expensive, also can't find an easy way to influence pH to be more basic, its easy to get it more acidic tho
@@newmemer8070 I moved mine indoors, got a small humidifier and treated it with chelated iron. I will have to look into testing the ph of the soil. I have been burrying some kitchen scraps in the soil as well like banana peels for it. So far the new growth is doing good, only lost two leaves so far but I know it’s still not at its best. It’s still growing from the top though.
Nice video. Please post an update on the fruit colour
They ended up being a light yellowish/green color
Google says they grow true to/from seed but the guy I bought my seed from says he has heard conflicting info on that, I just started some from the seed I bought, they were fresh out of the fruit 'when he packed them and shipped them to me, I got them in 3 days . I soaked the seed for 24 hours and planted them in cups. Should the cups be placed in the sun or in a warm place in the shade? Thanks
Just somewhere warm until you see the sprout emerge from the soil
Is the tree expose to fun sun ?
Partial sun
My tree is in flower, indoors, and the bees have gone for the season. How can I hand pollinate. I tried last year and had no success. It appears self fertile as in the summer I had a few tiny fruit develop but they fell off.
I would just try hand pollination with a fine paint brush until pollen comes out
Jim grows star fruit
One of the other benefits of the Carambola tree, if you keep chickens or ducks plant a Carambola Tree in your chicken/duck run. Chickens and ducks eat the fallen flowers, leaves and any fallen fruit, they will practically fight each other for the fruit!
I looooove the sour variants of this fruit!!! If anyone has a source in NYC PLEASE LET ME KNOW !!
Do you need a second plant for it to be pollinated?
Apparently not haha this one was all by itself 🤷🏼♂️ some varieties I believe need pollinators though
Did you say it is in a 15 gallon container? Is it really that big?
Yes 15 gallon. The number can make the containers seem bigger than they are. The dimensions of the pot makes makes it feel smaller than it actually is
How long did it take your tree to grow
About 2-3 years
Are star fruit flowers self pollinating
Idk about all but this one apparently was. It’s the only starfruit tree anywhere around haha
wow how many seeds are in a fruit
The ones I got this from had around 8-10
Can they be grown in So. Cal?
Yes I would think so! They are zone 9 and above I believe
flowers look like citrus flowers
How did they taste?
They were delicious! Surprisingly sweet for an ungrafted tree
Would your friend be willing to sell me some seeds from this tree ?
Are they self pollinating?
James k apparently so. This was the only tree in a greenhouse
How do they pollinate?...
They are self- fertile so they can fruit with just one tree, but you will get more fruit if you have 2. The flowers are primarily insect pollinated (bees, small wasps, etc) but wind can also play a roll in that.
How old is that starfruit tree?
Why my star fruit tree bloom with lots of flowers but no fruit?
It’s probably not pollinated. You could try hand pollinating them.
Haha cool video but why do they call it starfruit
Great question! If you go back to my how to grow starfruit from seed you’ll see where if you cut a cross section of the fruit it actually makes the shape of a star 😁 it’s pretty cool
@@TheMoreYouGrow yea i know its shaped like that when its cut, i was just messing with ya
@@CrazyCongos 😒😂😂
If u have seeds please send my way
I have a 4 year old Star fruit tree growing naturally (not in a pot). It is about 20 feet tall and flowers like crazy but does not produce any fruit.
Any suggestions or ideas why the flowers are not setting?
Thanks,
Dr. PDG, Jakarta, Indonesia
Dr. Paul D Giammalvo depending on what variety some are self-fertile but there are some variety that require another tree for cross-pollination to set fruit. If it is a very healthy tree and sets flowers well I would suggest getting another tree to allow cross pollination.
@@TheMoreYouGrow Thanks!!! I wondered about that myself...
Dr. Paul D Giammalvo do plenty of bees/pollinating insects visit the tree when flowering?
