You need to benchmark against other countries for that metric to be useful. A cursory look at US data shows that since 2000 their GDP has more than doubled and their energy production only increased by 18%. So they've become roughly 80% more energy efficient in producing a unit of GDP compared to our 30%. We're getting left behind.
Actually I see Dawie's graph starts at 2007. For that timeframe the US energy production didn't increase, and GDP grew almost 60%, or double that of South Africa.
