  • Transmit Audio - Harman dbx286s Mic Preamp/Processor.
Well this is a subject that is music to my ears, no pun intended. We all strive to deliver the very best audio we can from our radio equipment, as this helps with both transmit power and being heard and more importantly being understood by the listener.
I have purchased a Harman dbx 286s Mic Preamp/Processor to try and help me with this endeavour along with a Audio Technica 2040 Dynamic Microphone.
    Thanks to:
    M0VDO - Tony. in Leominster
    M0CSN -AKA - Mr HamRadioDeals
and Pete the man that started it all.......
    Just for fun
    Please subscribe and like.
    Cheers
    Mike - M0MSN
P.S. do not take my word for it, give it a go for yourself.

As a retired Broadcast Engineer, I would use a solid state relay to turn on or off the mains. A low voltage could turn it on and off. That way the switch could be installed anywhere convenient. It could be installed so that the transmitter it is associated with could turn it on and off.

Or you can get a simple in line kettle lead adapter that has an inline switch 👍

Sounds like a good DX setting and perhaps a bit less for more local long chats 👍🏻

Hi Mike, of course with preamp, much more color in the voice and little bit of power. Personally I am using Behringer equipment, but my EQ is from dbx...great component. aaa...my line is connected to heil PR40 and goes to Flex 6400.

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for all you share and contribute to the community.
I think the processor on sounds better. You've done a great job with the fine art to get the balance right to keep it sounding natural.

Good Video Mike, but that's why I use Behringer-rack mounted equipment as each unit has its own power switch

no better bang for buck processor out there. I run one on a ts-870 with a pr-40 and get stellar reports. love your channel mike, keep up the good work.

Hi Mike, my preference would be definitely with the dbx286 switched on, a significant difference in audio quality.

I use a 286s between a Heil 781 and my TS-890 with the soft-effect processor engaged which compliments the compression produced by the 286s. I consistently get flowery reports on audio quality and that’s what matters. Life is too short for crappy audio!

As usual cracking content Mike…I prefer your audio WITH the use of the box of kittens you have used to adjust the EQ….purrrrrrrrfect lol…Gi8kzu.

Sounding good Mike, definite improvement - but you'll have to work on your mic position &/or technique to avoid those plosives hitting the diaphragm - or stick a pop filter in front.
If anyone already has a mic & audio interface, or even a USB mic + a radio with an onboard USB sound card, like a 991A, then you can achieve the same results within your DAW software using plugins like I do.
BTW I'm sure those in the audio space are thinking "As if gear isn't expensive enough - now the ham community are buying it & driving up the 2nd hand prices" :-D

Much the same as others iv ran a dbx286s and some others outboard gear and love it especially the low frequency enhance and high frequency enhance the low boosts the low lows 80hz and cuts at 210 to 250 ish at the same time to take away the muddyness and the high frequency enhance adds harmonics making the high end much fuller and much more silky when adjusted .I know its sacrilege but the manual makes understand all the adjustments really good o and you can drive the processes harder than you would think as its the "patented" dbx over easy compressor so it dosnt get nasty like a lot of in rig processors. It's a rabbit hole audio gear hope you have fun your shake updates have been a blast to watch take it easy mike 2e0njk in Plymouth

I say it is better with the processor . they work great when you get the settings set for you. sounds like you found that. I have a power strip with a switch for each mains outlet. I am in US with out mains power I would add a EMI/RFI to mains on the inside of that unit. plenty of room to add, also MOV protectors or GDT ones. odd no switch . 73's

Nice unit, Well done with the Dremel, if that was me, I would have really botched that cut out....Personally, I would have used a 600A SPST mini toggle switch, they only need a 4mm hole.

Great video, Mike! I utilize the Rode in my recording studio quite often. Great microphone. As far as the sound quality at the end of your video (AT mic), I did notice the "plosives" were a tad bit more pronounced, however the signal sounded pretty good. Take care!!- 73 KQ4KIO

Hi Mike...Great video . I have the DBX286s But i have had little success when used with my PR781 and FTDX101MP and it dosent seem to make any difference what so ever to my audio. I think though that i may be doing something wrong 🤔. I think i got my knickers in a twist regarding balanced / unbalanced audio and connections relating to such. Would you be so kind to explain to me your setup from the mic through the DBX to the radio mate please including what cables you used and whether balanced or not....ta mate. Mark, m0mco 👍

i have the same processor and they work great.. as for the power im surprised it doesn't have a power switch, though. that said, i guess being designed for a rack it doesn't need one. you also need to make sure you switch BOTH SIDES of the mains input or at least switch the live side. safety and also rfi as well. the one thing i did with mine was replace the IEC input with a filtered one.

Most rack-mountable pro-audio processing equipment doesn't have power switches, as it's assumed you'll be using a power distribution box (that often has a power conditioner).

I've been thinking about going for an external audio processor for a while - the audio quality at the end sounded REALLY nice. Do you still use the processor in the 890 or just leave that switched off?
My thinking is to go into my 990 using the digital audio input and an Edirol ADC which I have floating around to do the conversion from the processor.

Could I just ask, what’s the purpose of the direct injection box?

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  7 місяців тому

Yes it is used to separate and transform the line output from the dbx box which is 50 KOhm to the input of the Kenwood which is 200 Ohm.
