- My 1st Tuna trip of 2023 - Full day Offshore fishing on the Grande out of H&M Landing San Diego on April 22nd 2023 . Captain Tyler , Crew members Nate , Toni , and Others did a great job putting us on fish . Ash served up some excellent grub and even some fresh caught Bonita .I apologize for the Pirate fishing language :) . 36 Anglers brought home a total of 26 Bonito, 6 Bluefin Tuna, 1 Yellowtail. We ran into 1 very hungry bunch of bonita on our 1st stop after being hit on the troll . I managed to share 1 fish with a fellow fisherwoman Carly , both hooked and faught in at the same time . And landed 1 nice grade bonita on a Penn Battle high speed reel married to a Okuma Albacore special rod . Work out for sure , the fish put in some major work : ) . Nate caught his 1st bluefin , a nice grade and even ate the heart . Another gentlemen slayed a very nice fish on a dropper rig for flyline sardine . We chased breezers and schools picking off only a few overall . Weather was amazing and met some really good people . Couldnt ask for a better day fishing . The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!

We got skunked. 2 fellas were able to bring in 2 130lb Bluefin. They were deep all around and could hear on the sounder. We plan on going back to SD this month or next.

All of us invest a lot of money and effort to fish for Bluefin. There are minor things we can do to greatly improve our chances of catching fish or just taking a long boat ride. Listen to the Captain so you'll know which setup to fish with (deep or shallow).Watch where the deck hand is throwing bait (that's where to be). Don't strip off line on you reel (use fingers to put a little tension on the line to get the bait to swim away). Also, if see others doing it politely correct them or get away from them,we want to catch fish not tangles. 😊

Don’t know how many rigs you carry on the boat but “always” have a sinker rig ready! I see the butt hooked baits but when the skipper is calling out the depth take advantage of it. Stop the fly line and drop! Got my first of 5 trips next week, all from 1.5 to 4.5 days. Good luck and tight/follow your line😂🎉
1HOTAHI , I had a sinker rig setup late in the game . The largest fish was on a sinker , the only one in the water at that stop, then the following stops a few where out every time . They where definitely shy , but still boat managed 6 . Good luck on your coming trips , hope you Slay. I'm debating a trip this weekend. @@kern_yak_angler that's plenty , I have a pursuit 6000 , my son in law cranked in a very nice Dorado / Mahi on it . Check out my Malihini Charter trip . Great reel , mine is married to a Daiwa beefstick 7' and works very well.

Don't set the hook! Just let it run for about 5 seconds and click bail closed and start reeling.

36 people is too many but theyre all trying to pack em in nowadays. Limited loads is better but now limited load trips arent truly limited.
Gerald , These days it hasn't been to bad . I've been on boats in the past with literally shoulder to shoulder people . Prices went up during covid to help keep distancing rules and the landings realized Anglers don't mind paying more per person to have less people on the boats.
