I have an adult child with a psychotic disorder. He spent many years in a group home where he received support and although everything wasn't always perfect, he was basically safe. But, his now ex-girlfriend's family talked him into applying for his own guardianship. He was evaluated by an unfamiliar psychologist once, an unfamiliar social worker a couple of times, and was judged to be competent to live on his own by a judge not a mental health specialist. Since that time he has been homeless, and in and out of jails as well as psych units. He doesn't take his meds, gets in fights, becomes delusional, and at times doesn't know who he is. I blame this on our broken mental health system and the fact that non-medical people like judges, social workers, and psychologists (they are PHDs not MDs) make medical decisions.

It kind of sucks both ways. Cause there might of been a part of him that wanted to be “free” of the system he was in, so the advice from his ex-gfs family gave him the confidence to get guardianship.
Obviously I don’t know, and I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t be allowed to be “free” in society, but my close friend and brother both have psychotic disorders.
My friend ended up being killed by police and my brother is actually doing very well after being discharged.

i would rather a psychologist evaluate me than an md because psychologists have specialized training that goes beyond just a phd and mds don’t study psychology?? and mds aren’t inherently superior to phds….i get the frustration but that last point seems to come from misunderstanding the education and training process for psychologists and medical doctors 😅

My aunt has paranoid schizophrenia. Sometimes I worry that she’s over medicated but then I remember that before she was diagnosed, she would hear voices telling her to hurt people and instead, she would run away from home and was usually found on farmland or far away from other people. I’m glad she never hurt anyone, and wish that all people who are suffering with mental illnesses were able to get the care they need.

It explains a great deal as to why we in part still have the issues. It's about the equivalent of telling someone in a wheelchair to get up and walk. When we actually start dealing with the issue then things might change. To expect ill people to use non ill judgments is futile. Actually it's crazier to me then the mentally ill. If she didn’t know she was sick, hadn’t figure out she had a condition, then this would be a tragic incident caused by mental illness. She knew she needed medication, many times before this she had left the medication on her own, that is actually the equivalent of a person that could benefit of a wheel chair for mobility and refuses to use it, then doesn’t function while having the possibility of using a mobility aid. Nobody is expecting this person to walk normally, but there are accommodations and for mental illness, that accommodation is treatment. We all need accountability, in this case she is totally responsible because she was aware of what she needed to do and had already seen that not taking her medication made her violent.

The victim may not have been predetermined, but this crime was. Not only did she willingly choose to not take her antipsychotics, she made the decision to purchase the knives, she made the decision to kill, she was aiming at a specific spot, and once she was done, ran away from the scene. This beast was in full control of her actions, she was fully aware of herself. She’s not a schizophrenic, she’s a psychopath. A schizophrenic person with any semblance of a conscience would have broken down once they returned to reality and realized what they had done. Her? She acted as though she had done nothing wrong. She planned all of this out, and when that failed, she went with plan B. She doesn’t need a hospital room, she needs solitary confinement. I said what I said. I remember this case well, it happened when I had a double celebration, my birthday & mothers day. If you look at 95% of cases in the UK that were reported on mainstream media, you'll see that they were pretty much all preventable, the Arianna Grande concert was & nearly every brutal murder. The government, doctors, police etc have records on these individuals, they've been flagged as dangerous etc & nothing is done. Then we have pathetic sentencing & often they're released with a whole new identity & they have protection. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Not too certain about how the process works, but you can see that she doesn't have the bag on her in the arrest footage, meaning the police had already confiscated it. I have a feeling that the cop's "nothing in there is going to hurt me" was more about if the bag was boobytrapped, or otherwise able to cause harm when searched. A knife inside a bag isn't on that level, especially after the police became aware that there's a sharp object inside the bag. It's like when you're washing the dishes and you know that a kitchen knife is sitting somewhere under the soapy water. You're gonna be a bit more careful when searching for it, and you're gonna avoid touching the blade.

      2) there are A LOT of people with mental illness who have the capability of being violent due to their illness. That does not mean they are dangerous people. With the right treatment, they're most often upstanding members of society and you'd never know.
      3) you don't need to be in patient to be monitored and made sure you're following your treatment plan.
The problem isn't the mentally ill, even the violent and possibly dangerous ones. The problem is a shitty Healthcare system that doesn't actually care about the patient or those they may affect. None of this would have happened if this woman got the proper out patient care she needed. Why exactly she didn't is anyone's guess, so many fall through the cracks, but institutionalization of people who are violent or dangerous when off meds, who are taking their meds properly, is not the answer and never will be.

I hate to say it, but in IMO they weren't attentive enough toward their only child....
The Mom was no where near her daughter, running, with ear buds in her ears, & couldn't hear her daughter, when she called out to her. Yes the Mother apparently completely entrusted her daughter to her Father's care, since she was actually, actively blocking out sensory input, with her distance, & ear buds. She was essentially making herself inaccessible, if either the Father or the child needed to get her attention.
The Father was not being attentive "enough" either, as he let his daughter run after her Mother, & let her get too far away. He was not in close enough proximity to protect his only child from harm. The daughter also, apparently did not feel close enough to her Father to run to him, for him to meet her needs in that moment, even though he was the one who was apparently more "available".
Not saying this to judge, as someone with a superior attitude, because I'm not a perfect parent, & have made plenty of my own mistakes parenting. So I can say this based on what I've learned through experience & observation, & what I've learned from my own mistakes.
And the woman who murdered that child, in my opinion got off way too easy, mentally ill or not. Personally I think she was both a violent psychopath,(who lacked both a conscience, or remorse), & a schizophrenic. I think she premeditated murdering someone, & was using her schizophrenic "diagnosis", as an excuse to act out her violent tendencies, knowing it "protect" her from the full consequences of her actions. At least in this side of life...

Hi👋This is such a horrendous, senseless, & incomprehensible murder. I appreciate you included Emily’s characteristics, and positive memories she and her parents had, and I’m also glad that you included some of what Emily’s father/parents said. (overall so much focus is on the murderer & most victims are forgotten about, but I’ve noticed a good “trend” over the last year or so, it at least feels like more and more true crime channels are changing that, and I don’t know what to say - I mean the best would be a world without heinous crimes, but such a world doesn’t exist,- and have never existed.)
Thanks for your time and effort, you’re a very likable UA-camr 🐾✨

I was admitted against my will several times. They drugged me up and discharged me without me cooperating with any of the group activities or individual therapy. After they released me I had no way to get my medication as appointments with psychiatrists were out by ay least 3 months. No matter where you are people with severe mental illnesses are constantly being brushed aside and Unfortunately in this case and many others it amounted to a life lost for no reason. I was lucky enough after 30 years to find a psychiatrist who really cared and took her job seriously. Not all of us get that lucky

It was in Claymont, DE March 1990, I still remember the guys name from the newspaper Joseph DeShields... Then I checked online and saw Joseph Shields but this guy also had a history of mental health and he was 18 at the time got 18yrs in a mental hospital... My friend's name was Brenda Coxe... This was premeditated, and this “diminished responsibility” is a load of crock! She was FULLY aware of what she intended to do, because SHE had gone and bought the knives, and SHE refused to take her oral medication for a month before she took Emily’s life senselessly!!
She might have paranoid schizophrenia, but she knew EXACTLY what she was doing, and she attempted to get away with it, but thank God for the hero, Tony, who chased and tackled her!
Every single “medical” profession, and whomever else truly and horrifically dropped the ball in this case! They KNEW that she had already REFUSED to take her oral medication while she was in the mental hospital, but they ALLOWED her to “escape” without a single consequence, and they ALLOWED her to go back into society on her “word” that she’d take her oral medicine. Since she CLEARLY lied about her “promise” to take her oral medication, then that, right there, SHOULD have proven that she’ll LIE to get out of being responsible for anything.
May God have Mercy on society if and when she’s allowed to live freely in society, because she’ll probably be sent to a town under an assumed name.
May Emily rest peacefully in her eternal slumber.

My ex boyfriend and my father are paranoid schizophrenics. The things that they believe are often confusing and terrifying and the worst part for them is that no one believes that they're God/the chosen one/a superhero/whatever they feel they are and they are accused of having a mental illness. Just today I was emailing with my ex(he cannot have my phone number anymore!) and he spent a great deal of time talking about how hurt he is that I would accuse him of being schizophrenic! According to him his spiritual guide Desura has just helped him ascend and soon he will win approximately 43 million dollars from the lotto. Luckily for society he's not the violent sort. My father is violent though and tbh even though he needs to be committed and forced on meds I don't want to provoke him into coming after me. He sees family members as a threat and I wouldn't put it past him to hurt me, my sister, my niece, literally anyone if the voices in his head think we're threatening him. This is why people like Eltiona end up committing crimes like this. No one wants to be the sacrificial lamb to be abused.

I’m so sick of people using their mental health issues as a crutch to justify committing crimes…if you have a diagnosis and have prescribed medication; it’s your responsibility to take that medication! In my opinion she is 100% guilty of murder, she refused treatment for her illness, she bought the pack of knives and went to the park to search for a victim…just because a killer doesn’t have a specific victim in mind, doesn’t mean they don’t have the intention to kill at all

I would say that they let that woman down big time and they will do the same thing when she’s out again. If they kept a closer eye on that woman then maybe just maybe that sweet little girl would still be here. Shame that the mental health services are not held accountable also.

She could have believed that she needed to carry the knives for protection. As a schizophrenic I have felt the need to protect myself. And an episode can last for days, weeks or months.
There is an overlying illness that makes mentally ill people believe they are not sick but if she was not diagnosed with the overlying illness then she should have been managing her illness.
At the same time, it's terribly difficult for some people to manage their illness. I can have really heavy episodes however I do not find it difficult to understand that my medication is helping me. Sometimes the paranoia makes people believe doctors are actually out to hurt them. I've seen it in the psychiatric hospitals, the voices and paranoia convince them they are being killed slowly, being experimented on etc. I'm just fortunate to be able to take my meds and get better but it's not like that for others and it's really sad and scary to see.

One of the biggest problems with mental health care in general is personal autonomy. Where do you draw the line? Some people don’t want treatment, do we force treatment? That takes away the persons right to autonomy. Court ordered treatment is a thing but it’s very conditional.

She was so lucky to be able to receive those injections. They keep psychosis at bay and are one of the best anti psychotic treatments available. So many people in the US don’t have access to these injections and it’s sad as schizophrenics are known for not being med compliant. The injections saved my life. I nearly died on multiple occasions from suicide until the injections stopped my symptoms. I take the oral medication now and have been med compliant for years. It’s very sad what mental illness does to families if untreated.

Here's the thing: you cannot lock up someone for refusing to take prescribed medication. You can ask them to take it, but you can't forcibly medicate someone who has capacity and it's not a life-saving measure. The idea that we should 'lock in an asylum' anyone who refuses their medication would quickly result in overflow of every mental health facility we have. Not to mention - did you take every antibiotic you had last time you were ill? Thought not. Should we lock you up, then?
The biggest predictor of violence for mental health services is a history of violent episodes. I don't in any way condone her acts, but given that all the doctors and professionals have to go on is past behaviour, they couldn't have predicted violence against a stranger.
