Wow South Jamaica, I remember the time when I got robbed in the bathroom in P.S. 123 elementary school in the 70's, I believe the area is a little safer now compared to back then.

This is where my mother and father were born and lived in Hollis Jamaica. My grandparents on both sides migrated from Brooklyn to here to eastern Long Island.
Correct; going from Brooklyn/ Manhattan to Queens was actually called "going out to the Island". We lived in Hollis, I went to P.S. 118 on 110th Road, I believe, (we lived on 195th Street) and I remember when that huge rock on the triangle at Farmers Blvd., and Liberty Ave. was *unpainted, and in its natural state* .
I remember Hollis from way back in my younger years. I was a product of 104th Ave/Francis Lewis Blvd. Which was technically Queens Village. However we were still considered a valuable section of Queens New York. #gone but not forgotten...

Queens doesn't look like a concrete jungle the way The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan does, although parts of it is just as crowded. It feels like you're in another city. Staten Island doesn't either in most areas, Staten Island even looks kind of rural in some spots. Some areas of Queens can be kind of wild though.
Its different because Queens is the largest borough by land mass. Only Brooklyn has more residents than Queens. Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn just have less space to use.

i went to I.S 192 and use to get breakfast sandwiches all the time with the sweet tea in the morning.. grew up on 199th street. living in Atlanta Georgia right now and this brings back so many memories. time flies.
I remember for years and years I always thought people in NYC (all boroughs) lived in apartment buildings or projects and them brownstone homes that are like connected together. But that was the perception I always had of NYC cause that’s only what they showed in movies filmed out there. Ppl not from Cali had their perception of us based off Hollywood movies over the years.

Next time u come to queens hoods you gotta drive thru the Jamaica ave and woodhull ave side of Hollis. You might even wanna drive thru shadyville (specifically Hempstead blvd and springfield blvd, and 212st and Jamaica ave) there’s a lotta history in south Jamaica, Hollis and shadyville even Tupac had family out in shadyville and all of those places get active. Looks much better than 20 -30 years ago but was always clean and quiet compared to the other big 3 in Manhattan , Brooklyn & Bronx. StAlbans and Hollis are not really hoods. Mid class neighborhood with people who emulate South Jamaica& Brooklyn.
