    This little powermachine holds up really well for todays standards.
    Its lightweight, small and great image quality.

      And it's a CCD. Not the garbage CMOSes we have today.

    I think the footage has a nice, retro look to it. I'd be curious to see what it looks like in B&W. Question for you: does the camera output a clean signal via HDMI?

      Yes it does! I apologize for a belated response.

    Hello. THANKS for perfect explanations. Your great technical knowledge makes me ask if you can make a list and put it on youtube. (I am in 3 video groups for private pensioners) all members discuss "technical quality", for example many people recommend that you store video as MP4 on a USB stick. (I mean AVI is far better than MP4) and I mean the same video stored on DVD is even better than AVI and MP4......am I right? or can you explain the technical quality difference?

    • @ConsumerDV
      @ConsumerDV  11 місяців тому

      AVI and MP4 are containers, that is, boxes. They do not directly affect the quality of the picture. But some containers are better than other, they allow better and more consistent metadata, several video and audio tracks, faster navigation over the video, etc. MP4 is a newer and better container than AVI. Other popular containers are MKV and TS/MTS/M2TS.
      As for DVD, you can use it as a storage medium, just to store random files, it this case there is no difference in quality compared to the same files stored on USB or HDD. Or, you can author a DVD-video disc compatible with standalone DVD players, in this case you are limited to standard definition MPEG-2 at up to 10 Mbit/s. You can author HD content on a DVD; a DVD player will not be able to play it, but a BD player will, this is called AVCHD Disc.

    Great video, do you have any other suggestions with a longer zoom range? And also I was curious if SD quality recordings would have less artefacts due to pixel binning etc. for the upscale done in camera. The sensor is not native 1080p i suppose.

      File-based consumer-grade HD with CCD? Nothing comes up of the top of my head. I do like some CMOS-based camcorders for their overall quality and features.

    Stunning for consumer level 2008!
    A lot of those shots would have never crossed my mind to be from a thirteen year old camera. 🤯

      Actually, the horizontal resolution of the SD9 is only about 600 TVL, so it is as soft or softer than HDV, another HD format that launched in 2003. The best HD camcorders have horizontal resolution of 1000 TVL. Still, it looks pretty good, and if anyone cares for physical media, 24p footage from this camcorder looks really good when downrezzed to DVD.

      By 2012, small & cheap true HD camcorders were already available, due to new sensors.

    I bought this camera as used one from "Polish" Ebay and now I'm waiting for it to be delivered. I'm afraid that one day this camcorder won't turn on because of it being really old (in this year 16 years will pass from premiere). Is it even possible to happend or they made good cameras back that days and it will work really fine as new one? Sorry for my broken English...

      In my experience, tapeless camcorders are quite reliable. The SD9 is known for a particular defect when the lock on the flip-out screen breaks, so the screen would not stay opened or closed. It does not affect the functionality, but is annoying. English is not my native language either :)

    Can this camcorder send live video over HDMI? Or do you know of any 3CCD HD camera that can? (Or even HD over component, though less useful for me.) I was looking to play with one and wanted to capture pre-compression.

    • @ConsumerDV
      @ConsumerDV  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, it can send live video over HDMI. It has a mini-HDMI port hidden behind the battery, so to use it you need to power the camcorder from an AC adapter or from an external battery via cable. I happen to have such a battery that I bought more than ten years ago for the HDC-SD1, back then original Panasonic batteries did cost $120 apiece and were good for only about 40 minutes of shooting. Without an external battery you would be tethered to an AC outlet. The camcorder did not come with a mini-HDMI cable, but I have a mini-HDMI adapter for full-size HDMI.

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR Рік тому

      I would imagine that any modern era camcorder can send live video over HDMI(other than perhaps some no-name super cheap camcorders, but they probably don't have an HDMI socket at all), camcorders have basically always been able to put out live video.

    • @ConsumerDV
      @ConsumerDV  Рік тому +1

      I am not sure what do you mean. Do you want to use it as a webcam? Or do you simply want to edit the recorded video on a computer? For the latter you don't need OBS, just take the memory card from the camcorder and insert into a computer. The video files have MTS extension, see directory structure in Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD#Overview

    Is it possible to hook this up to a black magic intensity shuttle to capture raw footage?

    • @ConsumerDV
      @ConsumerDV  Рік тому +1

      I don't use BM Intensity. See my reply to Fresh Coat about HDMI. The camcorder can also send video over component, but you need a special dongle. You can double-check the user manual to be sure.

    Can you shoot in 4:3 ratio ? Or only in 16:9?

    • @ConsumerDV
      @ConsumerDV  3 роки тому +3

      It is an HD camcorder, as such it shoots only in 16:9. But you can always cut off the sides if you want.

      @girmonsproductions 3 роки тому

      @@ConsumerDV yeah I know I can but it’s so much better when you actually see 4:3 on your screen
