Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - Mike Matei Live

- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. This game was pretty good. Nice graphics, moves and animations. I felt like it had a pretty big lack of characters that they could have capitalized on. And the recharge for the special attack pretty much breaks the game. You can just keep charging it and spamming it. That said, maybe it's less effective on the harder settings. The Dimension X levels were cool, though I wish there were more. An outside of the technodrome fight would have been nice. But I guess in the lore here, the technodrome is wrecked. But Maybe they could have fought on the outside earlier in the game before that happened. Anyhow, I do think this game is pretty good, but I guess I had my hopes set a little higher. I think the games strongest aspect is that you can unlock more moves as you play. That's the one thing that might make me come back for more at some point. Maybe.
Here is my stream of Recuse Palooza from a few years ago which just goes to show how good that game was. It felt like it had more soul, even if the budget is obviously much smaller.

I played this with 5 other people online and it was nothing but constant speedbumps due to people constantly stopping to taunt/charge up their super move. It got even worse once they leveled up and could hold more than one charge.
Yeah about half way through this playthrough I realized that this game is pretty broken by the special charge up meter. That said, some people said that playing on arcade is harder so MAYBE it's better on that mode?
@@mikematei Yes, definitely play arcade mode, it limits special meter to 1.
@@masterlee1988 Okay I'm tempted. Maybe thats the problem.
@@mikematei Yep. I recently played it today and it made a difference! You can still charge it up but only use 1 at a time so you can't spam specials consistently like story mode, you have to plan when to charge it, definitely on boss fights.
@@mikematei Also in arcade mode you don't have most upgrades so not only is the special meter stayed on 1 use at a time but also no health upgrade which means you can't take as many hits as in story mode so don't get hit as much.
I like how this game actually has the Triceraton in it. Its funny there was a picture of a Triceraton on the cart for TMNT III Manhatten Project but you never fought a Triceraton.
I’m don’t know why, but Mike’s face seeing the Krang controlled Statue of Liberty makes me laugh.
This game is damn awesome by the way.
This game is a literal love letter to TMNT fans. You can tell how much detail & love was put into this game
This has to be the newest game Mike has ever played.
I mean it came out yesterday. So how could it not be?
He also got to Valheim pretty quickly.
@@mikematei but you still played it😊which is great!
@@mikematei😂
I like how April is just randomly holding a mic while in the sewer watching TV.
okay, that's a weird thing to say
@@PrimoRocker Why? It's strange that she just carries a microphone around for no apparent reason, like when she's hanging out with friends.
Sometime during the last three seasons of the show, April went freelance and no longer worked for Channel 6, but I think she kept the microphone.
I feel like they missed out on the opportunity to make Joey Gladstone unlockable. With his weapon of choice Mr. woodchuck.
Exactly. Where is he. I expect a fully animated character with 30 moves too.
i like turtles
Is it made of Wood
And where's Batman?
@@stevenjohnson243 that's jesse. he loves that amphibian.
I just beat the game this morning, I felt like I was 6 all over again playing TMNT 2 on NES. I also thought the developers drew inspiration from the fan game TMNT Rescue Palooza. Which is good…
I appreciate Mike uploading these vids. Don't have much time to catch him on Twitch due to my life schedule but watching it here helps me relax in the evening. Mike feels like a bro that I'm just chilling with, watching him play. Thanks dude.
Arcade mode only lets You charge the special once, has limited continues and lives. Its the way to play!
Yep, I play and beaten it as well, even on Gnarly(hard)difficulty.
I'm loving this game, they nailed the era.
15:55 - If you play in multiplayer, the bosses have their health adjusted based on how many players there are, and the number of enemies increases based on the size of the group.
the rising attack and the dash attack are great moves to use for combos instead of just the 4 hits. I hope this game gets the Streets of Rage 4 treatment really would love more characters and abilities, something to work towards.
Survival and boss rush mode please!
Loved the David the Gnome theme sing. I didn't know it was made in Spain.
The laughing/charge up thing is like this game's white tanooki suit.
Yeah, it's pretty much the WIN button.
I Appreciate April O' Neil and her work in Ten Inch Mutant Ninja Turtles. The way she keeps taking green loads is totally radical
The wu tang song in this shit fire 🕯🕯🕯
Played this with both of my boys (they're 9 and 5), and we had a blast. Beat it in a couple of sittings, and had good bonding time.
Jumping around on skateboards is wayyy more unrealistic than the flying board wich could have sensors that follow your movements lol
As soon as you finished the head, I knew it was Mando Gecko. Lol. And I agree. Wish he was in there.
Playing this with my son. Outstanding game. Nice change of pace.
i just noticed in the intro, really subtle. Michaelangelo doesnt have his nunchuks. he brandished a pizza instead. a callback to how they censored his nunchuks out of the show?
Does the UK still have bullshit Ninja laws? Will this be released as the "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles?"
I’m having a blast playing this game
I know towards the end that Mike says the game is just "good" but some things to take in note...
1. He only played in single player. This game is best played with other people
2. Even at the end, he still barely knows how to play the characters effectively.
3. Back in the day, if you were to purchase Turtles in time on the snes, you would be paying $50 altogether. This game in comparison is $20 with more characters to play as than just the turtles. Mechanics from turtles in time have been enhanced. You have all four original turtles voice actors from the early 90s cartoon, with the original intro sung again by mike patton. You got the fucking wu-tang clan to do Shredder's theme song. You got proper pixel graphics that give you the 90s arcade feel.....Idk what else you could really want asides from maybe a new mode, but idk what mode you could add asides from maybe survival or boss rush...
More levels could be added. An outside fight with the technodrome. As far as “enhanced” mechanics, you could put it that way. For me I find it overly complicated. For me, less is more with the moves. I like the moves in Manhattan Project. There’s like two so its not much to remember. I think this is great for people who can remember like 30 different button combinations though. Thats not me.
@@mikematei I side with him, this game is just 'good' the real sticking points is 'oh nostalgia tmnt' and 'nice graphics!' but gameplay wise seems simply competent. I like the bonus moves and stuff, but that is just.... the standard for modern games. IT is solid, yes and if you like tmnt is awesome, but this is not a 'oh my god this is the best ever' material, in my opinion.
@Mike Matei I understand your reasoning with how learning fewer mechanics is better but there's honestly not too much you need to learn. Even though the how to play seems daunting when you first see it, it's really simple once you put a little more practice into it. And at least this game shows you how the mechanics work as opposed to the first turtles game on nes where certain turtles deal more damage on certain enemies but the game didn't teach you about it. You could also apply the argument that if you know how to play this game well, you would enjoy it a lot more just like the first nes turtles game. I don't know how you would be able to look up that kind of information for turtles 1 nes back in the day easily.
it was made in a little studio here in Montreal, I've bought the physical Switch version, I love that game, that's the one i've wait since turtles in time
The soundtrack to the game is great. They even got Ghostface Killah and Raekwon to make a song. Wu-Tang really is for the children lol.
For me the ghost and rae song on the soundtrack pushed the game to 10/10 game of the year status. They really went above and beyond for this game and it shows
i consciously held off on watching anyone else play this because i knew: when i want to watch a stream of a brand new tmnt game, my number one choice is mike matei
5:30 I love the Michael jackson style beat here. Sounds like blood on the dancefloor
This game is great. They had alot of characters that I didn't expect to see in a TMNT game. Like Tempestra. Who would've ever guessed that they'd use Tempestra in a TMNT game? Or Wingnut? Not to mention the game's a continuation of the cartoon, taking place AFTER the events of the show (though we never get an explanation on how Shredder returned, but whatever; somehow Shredder returned).
Byrne's girlfriend is in it. She's running out of the Channel 6 building at the start
13:30 I WANT TO PLAY AS AL BUNDY! They should make a game like this of Married with children
Overall, I was very happy with the game. I feel like I can't complain, because it went far beyond anything I was ever expecting. If I had to make any nitpicks though...I would have liked to see some more of the villain characters that we've never seen as bosses in any of the games before, like Scumbug or Pizza Face. They could have been fitted in there as "mid-level" bosses...like maybe fight Pizza Face half-way through the mall stage. I was very happy to see some characters we've never fought in any of these games before though, like Wingnut, Chrome Dome, and Captain Zorax and the Triceratons. I've always found it odd that you can see the Turtles fighting a Triceraton on the cover of The Manhattan Project, but you didn't encounter any of them in the actual game.
I think Mike should have left the point on there for Groundchuck and Dirtbag. Even though they were in Manhattan Project....they still deserved the point because this is the first time you've had to fight them at the same time, and the first time they looked cartoon accurate in their game form (in Manhattan Project, they looked a little off due to the limitations of the 8-bit sprites). Plus, I wasn't expecting them to be in this game at all...the only reason they were in Manhattan Project is because they had just made their appearance in the "Planet of the Turtleoids" episode of the show, and their toys had also just come out.
Wingnut, Chrome Dome, and Captain Zorax and the Triceratons have all appeared in previous games.
@@Wickedmadman366 I'm just thinking the classic 2D beat-em ups like Turtles the Arcade Game, Manhattan Project, and Turtles in Time. I know those characters appeared in some of the other TMNT games like Tournament Fighters.
Tbh mikes expectations are a bit unreasonable. You can't play as ace duck and a few minor crossover characters so the entire game is blown for you. You want to play as shredder, how would a campaign playing as shredder even work? His enemies are 4 turtles and a rat. I understand that a fan game had more content, but you have the option to just go play that. Just saying.
I didnt say the whole game was blown because of the lack of characters. It would just be nice if it had some more.
If anything, my issue is that there are too many controls to remember (for me).
I prefer something like Manhattan Project with a more simplified control scheme.
@@mikematei i actually appreciate that you took a few minutes to clarify your position. I dont think the game is perfect by any means, like take out that taunting shit to refill specials
The taunting stuff is okay on arcade mode because the game is harder then and it's harder to refill. But yeah, on STORY mode it's super stupid. The way to fix this game for me would be to add another mode, maybe called "classic mode" or something where there is a more limited move set. I'm not saying to take anything away, just add another mode with less moves for people that are more used to games like "Arcade Game" and "Manhattan Project" where the moveset is more simplified.
@@mikematei maybe there's a way to submit feedback to the devs including that suggestion to add another mode? Or i guess they could have a moves list option in the menus and maybe you could switch on and off stuff that you dont want? I dunno that might be a ball ache to set up.
Cowabunga Dude. It Mike’s Pizza Time.
Also, I love the music they use for the layer in this game. It totally sounds like a piece of music you'd hear in the 87 series.
This is a badass game .
You can use the slide to go right thru the triceratons with shields to attack them from behind instead of walking around them
I absolutely love this new game on my switch (Normal mode). I have to say the developers who made this game did really an awesome job. I do love beat em' ups and remembering the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.😉👍
Was only Matter of time for him making this video Cant Wait to get the game🔥🔥🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
2012 TMNT is the BEST TMNT TV series.... 87 series will always be my favourite, but the 2012 series is a masterpiece.
Ralph sounds great. He is just as angry as you 🤣🤣
I went a checked real fast and couldn't believe you actually commented that on Erin's video 😂
I would LOVE a Dreamcast stream from you!!!
This game is straight banger.
6:40 why is he a woman’s torso covering the twins with 3D glasses and a face 😂
Omg bro.... Swat Katz!! It feels like some kind of Mandela effect cause nobody remember that around here. All look at me like that was never a thing. Yes it was, radical squadron baby. Would have loved a crossover with the turtles.
I love how the technodrome actually has techno playing in it.
The new Final Vendetta game's mechanics are based off of Final Fight . Kind of. Edit: also if you want a tough beat em' up play Final Vendetta it is much harder than this game .
Drinking Samuel Adams and watching these streams is the shit!
This game is just great. Best turtles game !
I agree with you Mike, about the significance of anniversaries and birthdays. I’m always annoyed by ppl who take these days very serious. But I think Shredder’s Revenge is a better game and more polished than Rescue Palooza. Playing Shredder’s Revenge online with friends is gonna be lit.
Finished it today, loved it! First game of it's genre that I might actually replay and finish on hard/arcade. Lots of fun!
Great game, but once you've finished it, there's not much left to play for. If there was a survival mode similar to the one in SOR4, this game would be infinitely repayable.
The taunt power bar thing is really broken. Even for story mode.. It should give you like 1/4 of a bar or nothing.
Ik this a super late comment but this game is sooo good lol would love to see you and james on a monday covering this when u guys come back feb. Oo oo and cant forget the dimension shellshock dlc its a nice touch
2:33:45 - So when Mike got to Dimension X, did everyone see what the game was actually doing? I did. As soon as I saw what the Technodrome looked like, I knew what was going on. This game is post Season 10 of the cartoon.
The soundtrack sounds like metal slug
Mike has played soo many games, he's not impressed by anything anymore
That’s fair. It takes more to impress me these days. This game is fine. I do recommend it. I just really think they should change the charge up so that you can only use it once.
I am fine with the charge up meter gradually refilling as you hit enemies. What I mean specifically is how you can just stop and charge it whereever you want. I think you should only get to do that once per stage.
Otherwise you have to hit enemies to refill it. It makes the whole thing too much of a throwaway experience.
The large amount of moves you can perform is nice though. And I love that you can unlock extra moves as you go.
@@mikematei I strongly recommend you to play through Arcade mode as you only have 1 charge meter at a time so it means you have to use the special wisely and have to find safe spots to charge it up which is difficult to do when there are numerous enemies on the screen. For bosses you can only charge it when it's safe which means you have to avoid a lot of their attacks until you can find an opening to use it.
@@mikematei I think they should make it so you either can't do the charge up in Arcade Mode, or put in a 'motivator' like they used to have in coin op arcade cabinets back in the day, so you can't sit there building up your meter.
I'd like to think the Frogs are from another dimension, where people actually believe the Turtles are the heroes that save them, and those dimensions crossed over in this instance, so the Turtles actually destroyed the Statue of Tyranny in the Frogs' universe, and vice verse, etc...
To add onto your Mario kart rant, dragonball xenoverse 2 came out in October of 2016. They’re still releasing content for that game. Dlc 14 is coming this summer, and there are plans for dlc 15 later on this year.
32:18 - This boss is the Platinum Blocker of the game. You have to complete this stage and beat this boss without getting hit. Good luck with that. It's easier to beat the final boss without getting hit.
There isn't actually an achievement for completing those challenges.
@@LizardDude It was actually the final stage that was the Platinum Blocker, not this one. I knew it was one of them, but I couldn't remember which.
Use the dodge to get into position and to avoid attacks etc…the forward forward X is great to start combos
Another timeline everyone seems to obsess over is the Castlevania timeline. I've got a good one, how about the Where's Waldo timeline? And you have to include the books too.
Arcade Gnarly difficulty is where it's at. A buddy of mine and myself just finished it last night as Casey and Raph. We got to the end with 0 continues and finished with slivers of health on our last lives. It was wild.
Nice. I also beat Arcade on Gnarly with Raph as well. But I want to try it with Donatello and April since I do better with them.
After watching you play, I'm still getting the game but I can agree with you on the Rescue Palooza point as far as the unlockable characters and call backs...Fan games have taken big steps. You should play Legend of the Double Dragon...
Well those characters have poor animation. And all this game has is beautiful animation
@@georgehernandez2156 this is the best Ninja Turtles thing ever created imo. Easily the best Ninja Turtles video game ever made. Mike may have felt cheated because of the normal difficulty but he owes it to himself to return to the game because playing on higher difficulty makes all the difference.
April looks like Fujiko from Lupin the 3rd.
If Fujiko had been living off a diet of soda and Twinkies maybe. April is.... husky this game.
I recently bought literally all of these figures from Neca…all the TMNT cartoon and 1990 film figures are incredible. Very expensive if you missed out in them though. Target usually has the cartoon figures over near the CDs and vinyl
me : I fucken suck at this game
Me after watching mike : its just a hard part of the level I dont suck
That song was perfection why remake it bleh
3:29:32 - what about Agghhh!! Got anything for that? Lol😂
They should make a game where the Turtles become evil under a spell and it's up to Shredder, Krang, Beebop, and Rocksteady to stop and save them.
That would be a nice change of pace
the bully from simpsons wants to play as the bad guys. . .huh?
@@Femaiden natrually!
Mike, use the X plus A attack…it’s a rising attack that launches enemies and makes combos much easier and cooler
Devs say we are to get DLC, new playable characters and costumes.
@@wdavis911 you calling them lairs?
By the way also, if you're struggling to get the 250 hit combo for the achievement, here's a trick that'll turn it into Easy Mode. All you have to do is juggle an enemy at the left side of the screen after clearing out all the other enemies. I got over 500 hits doing this. It's that ridiculous.
Instead of April being a playable character they should have gone with Casey jones instead
You unlock Casey Jones by beating story mode once.
Gotta love the Ninja Turtles! 😊👍
I waited til you streamed this Mike to even watch anythin related... thank you Mike! :D
I’ve only played this game on hard. It’s crazy seeing how fast the boss’s healthbars go down on normal. Your character also takes less damage. Everything else seems pretty much the same on both difficulties.
Yeah it's much more difficult on arcade. On story mode it's stupid because you are able to just spam the special. And then when I played on arcade, that's when I felt I actually had to play the game for real. And thats also when I realized there are way to many moves for me to remember. I miss the simplicity in the controls from NES/SNES
Great Games, series, toys. I wonder what was bigger Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Ghostbusters? I will be 40 in October. So Turtles/Ghostbusters was huge! When I was a kid.
The tmnt cartoon was wayyy bigger than the ghostbusters cartoon and the tmnt cartoons are still fun to watch
@@JBird401 yea as a whole I was thinking what was bigger cartoons, Movies, action figures, everything? All together.
@@ZMAN_420 i'm gonna say tmnt was bigger. Before the simpsons the tmnt cartoon was the longest running cartoon and the first tmnt movie was a huge success. I liked the ghostbusters too but imo they really only had one classic movie
@@ZMAN_420 plus the tmnt toys sold like crazy and they even still sell out tmnt comic books with The Last Ronin
C'mon Mike. I get that it has a lot of cameos, but Rescue-Palooza's art, animation, gameplay & polish is garbage compared to this. 1 Foot soldier in this game has more animation than the entirety of Rescue-Palooza. comparing the 2 isn't even close.
Yeah but this game you pay for, that game is free. I expect more out of games I am paying for.
I think Final Vendetta is supposed to be a game cut from the same cloth as Final Fight. Check it out, came out alongside TMNT Shredder's Revenge. It takes a lot of inspiration from Final Fight, but they kind of mixed in Streets of Rage in a way.
1:22:00 what’s on the vhs tapes? The original cartoon series of TMNT
good game and lots of things from the cartoon but once he knew he could fill the special up it ruined it for me anyway
I honestly didn't think you we're gonna play this game for awhile 😅 glad you did tho. It's pretty tubular 🍕
I have said multiple times in my streams that I would play it as soon as it comes out so that I can just get it over with. I needed to play it as fast as possible so I can be bothered less about it. The game is mostly fine except the stupid reusable special attack. I also see others in the comments complaining about that as well.
those are just Space Invaders for PC Engine, it's not such a deep cut) the way it has that double missile ship at the bottom shooting an iconic INVADER during Tempestra fight is a dead giveaway.. :D
2:35:30
The move list is great to have if the button combinations aren't too arbitrary.
Once you get every character to power level 10 there is a final secret move under the button combination XNXX.
the intro is exactly how the cartoon should be illustrated and animated now days... instead of all the wack shit that followed the 2003 version.
they can't make all the people the game would be to long and some people nobody cares for
I feel like taking a point away for Groundchuck and Dirtbag is petty. True, they were in Manhattan Project, but were they in other turtle games? They're deep cuts because there were only in a prime time special. Also, why would you want to play as a bad guy?
watch the Small Screen Singing - 4:35:55
Melted some of the ice off of my cold soul.
Beautiful!
Baxter's voice in this game, sounds like a voice Mike would do.
This game is cool but nothing can follow Rescue Palooza.
i know you don't play games on launch, but i just knew you would make an exception for this
Mike, completely agree about the nudes on Vern's tapes. I mean I was thinking 80's porn, but it could just be simple nudes as well. What? You said news? Well fuck, time to get my ears checked.
In all seriousness, I finished this yesterday and being an 80's kid that was obsessed with TMNT I enjoyed it overall. Obviously there are things I didn't like, and things I wish were added, but I thought it was fun. I also like your idea for a game based on the 90's movie, and it's quite an interesting thought for what that could potentially be.
Cheesing the special isnt as easy in the hard mode. Fewer hits to lose a life and bosses only take a small hit from them instead of a huge chunk of the energy bar wiped out.
Yep, and it makes it worse in Arcade mode since you only have up to 1 special meter at a time.
To me this game was way to easy, the game was fun, but to easy on both normal gameplay, and on arcade settings. Turtles 2, 3 on nes is harder, and so is the manhattan project for the snes.
3:56:11 WHERE'S ACE DUCK?
Where's Ace Duck?
"Cowboys of moo Mesa" like it says in the code of the west only?
I recommend trying some of this company's other games you have played some but I like Panzer Paladin more than this game and I don't think it sold near as well
This game looks cool (I haven't played it o I don't know if it also plays as cool) but it's sad that almost every TMNT game I can think of is a sidescrolling beat 'em up, outside of the few tournament fighters... I mean the beat 'em up genre is fun for what it is but it is "dumb" fun, it's quite literally straight forward; I wish more games tried to do something like the original NES game, with adventure and puzzle solving elements. Instead it feels that just because the NES game flopped and the arcade game was a success, they threw up their hands and decided that every game had to follow the arcade.
The only classic game that tried to be a platforming adventure again is the third one on Game Boy. (I'm not sure about more modern ones)
