I traveled solo to Guatemala for 56 days

- I traveled solo to Guatemala for two months and here is what I have to share.
The perfect backpacking itinerary:
Arrive in Ciudad de Guatemala and either stay there for a night or catch a shuttle directly to Antigua (they are directly outside the airport, costs $15)
Stay in Antigua for a couple of nights
Hike Acatenango
Go to Xela
From Xela, you can visit Chichicastenango, the biggest market in Guatemala
To do the trek from Xela to Lake Atitlan: www.quetzaltrekkers.com/xela/...
At Lake Atitlan, I recommend visiting at least one or two towns around
If you like to go to the playa Monterrico and El Paredón are nice.
From Lake Atitlan, you can go to Semuc Champey (ask your hostel receptionist what is the best way, or if they have a shuttle)
From Semuc Chaampey to Flore - be ready for a long ride.
Stay in Flores for one night
Camp out in Tikal
From Tikal, you can go to Belize or return to Ciudad de Guatemala and fly out to wherever you are going.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I lived in Guatemala for two years. I love the country and people. You are absolutely right about the three negatives. 100%. I subscribed! Thanks for the video. You're great!
Amazing as always, I truly value your perspective and storytelling, your content is engaging, interesting and educational, I look forward to your videos!!
Guatemala has great people, food and vibe! $1 equals Q7.00 quezels. Your money doubles. Your money will go a long way as long as you don’t go to luxurious boutique hotels, restaurants. . 🎉 thanks for the tips
My idea was go to Morocco next yea
r to my vacations. But I fell in love with Guatemala when I saw your first photo from there. Pretty excited to go to Guatemala in 2024!

❤️❤️❤️🥹🥹🥹 I know Dave, I know
I am planning on riding my ADV through Mexico, to Belize and then into Guatemala in November.
I used to be conversational in Spanish and I am studying and hope it comes back. I am also learning French for a trip to Canada in August.
loved it
Excellent tips in this video. Most videos I've been watching so far seem to draw on very short touristy experiences in Guatemala rather than a two-month experience like you have.
Thank you
Hi, I was looking for a video about the reality from Guatemala. It's true you are saying. I'm a local here and always I go to a park or just trying to hike a mountain everywhere we have garbage. I always try to collect them into a bag and throw it into the trash can. And additional to that business people are destroying forest, rivers and go on doing it. I am feeling overwhelm to be honest with you , you know is my country and I'd like just make conscience with this people and resolve this issue. Weather here is more hot than other years. I think this is the main problem after all. However I really enjoyed your video, you have a new sub. 🎉❤
So interesting how Guatamala looks EXACTLY like Nicaragua where I lived for 3 months in Leon and Granada. No difference at all. Not even the trash in the streets, lol.
Very good information!
Thanks always🥹
❤ The ups and downs of your travels! 😊
They are both very desirable parts of travel, no?
@@dianawanderlust Si!
BBC reconoció a Guatemala como uno de los 10 mejores destinos turísticos del mundo en el plano cultural.
Take a boat trip from Fronteras down the Rio Dulce to Livingston. It is a beautiful winding jungle river gorge with 200 high cliffs.
Guatemala es uno de los 19 países megadiversos del mundo.
very happy to seeeee yoooooo
Love you diana
Thank you!!!
Bendiciones hermosa que lindo que te la pasastes super 🇬🇹❤️🙏
Great video. Need to visit Guatemala someday ...
Thanks for watching
Great video. I want to visit.
👏well done
Thanks
What country is your favorite so far that you have visited?
Am from Guatemala and am going there on Christmas! I haven’t been there ever since I moved to the USA now I know English and many more but I still want to visit my family so after like 11 years am going there🎉
Awesome, traveling there for Christmas lol
Having lived in Guatemala for 2 years, I do agree with the 3 negative ones. I remember walking once down the road and there was a sign that said don’t throw trash “no tire busura” and there was a massive pile of trash. I also asked locals what they paid on the buses and only gave that much exactly because they try to over charge. I told a local family how much the taxi wanted me to pay and they laughed and asked if they offered a ride in a helicopter lol, I loved it and would love to go back. I was there in 1999-2001 so been a while
Second!!! I was wondering when you were going to post next. Obviously enjoying yourself too much. Take Care Diana. Coby x
Always happy to see your comments 🥹
Great video! Could I ask how/where you found your volunteering? Thank you :)
Great video Diana, I love the Architecture & the doors & windows! (Strange I know but I've worked with wood all my life!)
It's really sad about the garbage but it happens all over even in places that have the education & facilities! It drives me mad 🤬🤬
Take care & stay safe x 🙏❤🇬🇧
It drives me mad as well. I’ve been following the news about ocean cleanup (mostly The Great Pacific Garbage Patch) and every time I use plastic I imagine it ending up in the ocean 😢 where else can it go? Especially in the counties where they don’t have recycling at all 😢
Yes, I carry a plastic bag when I'm out walking & try to collect as much as I can, but folk just throw it out of their cars! That really winds me up 🤬@@dianawanderlust
@@steves7013 😢😢 I am with you
I'm looking into moving to Guatemala. Thanks for your take on life there, Diana. According to a 2017 study, across the globe, one million plastic bottles were sold every minute. Of those, only a small percentage were effectively recycled. It's worse now. Of course there are billions of other plastic products being tossed into the environment too. Microplastics, forever chemicals, radioactive waste, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, air pollution, etc. have created a toxic stew. And we wonder why more and more, especially young folks, are dying of cancer.
Nice 👌
I think prices for tourists will always be higher no matter where you go , do you know a county where tourist pay the same as locals ?
Tax payers subsidize and locals support the country (security. Infrastructure) unlessVisitors spend good money there, locals get to keep your trash, sewage and later your trash talk on videos. At a net loss. Visitors should pay more.
If you mind me asking, where did you volunteer at / through ? I am currently looking to spend a month in Antigua, Guatemala. I want to volunteer at a place that offers accommodations as well.
Hi! I’m traveling to Spain to tutor kids English through world packers. Do you have any tips for a 19 year old solo traveling female?
Hey I'm in Guatemala now and I'm here since a month. I've not seen any plastic or garbage on the streets. It's very clean here and people always offer you reusable straws and have a surcharge for take away containers. I mean I haven't been to Guatemala city as of yet but the rest of the country is cleaner than most European countries and the lakes are crystal clear....
Are you in Antigua?
Planning a trip to Guatemala, is may a rainy season?
Recommendations. Trash is not every where and they are new laws against the use of plastic and waste clasificación(change takes time). 2, transportation is a challenge. Use Uber, or a private car is cheaper than you think. 3. It is is way cheaper than other countries I have visit in the area for foreigners as I been on there too. Make friends along the way and ask questions to compare and learn. Over all a good video
Guatemala cuna y corazón de la civilización Maya.
Do you recommend any apps for connecting flights and or bus routes?
I don’t think there’s any 😢
Plastic straws are healthier than paper straws for all of our health - fact! However, there is NO excuse to litter, everyone need to be responsible. Thanks for your honest insights. Very informative.
Wow, lots of other placed to explore.
Yupp
Love your stuff please tell me what camera you use for your videos or do you use a iPhone
I use my iPhone ❤️
Editor on it as well? What app sorry so many questions I start my journey on 2 months

I love your videos!! You inspire me so much💞 would u recomment traveling to Guatemala if you`re not speaking spanish?
Yes absolutely
Great how described the culture and what is driving the environmental problems. But that is just an example, you talk about many cultural; elements.
Nar Geo recomienda a Guatemala como uno de los lugares que debes visitar al menos una vez en la vida.
$300 in semuc champey?
Hi nice vid
Yeah... I found the love of my life in Guatemala and now I live here. 😂 Everyone has their own opinions of course. Mine is the opposite. I feel like Guatemala is the most underrated country I've ever been to and that's after visiting 70 total!
I say im genuinely happy for you. It’s wonderful to live in a place you love
I guess its the same here in Georgia with the prices for the tourists and I feel too bad for my foreign friends sometimes :(
P.S. are you talking here faster than you usually do? I had to check if I had the speed changed myself.😅
P.S.S writing a comment and liking the video bcz I actually do, not cause you told me here 😜🤣
Haha I know you do love! 😍😍 no I’m not sure if I speak faster haha
my parents are from guatemala, im from the U.S so i went in 2022 i had all kinds of experiences, i had good, bad experience in guatemala but mostly i loved it alot. i went to guatemala city, lake atatlin, antigua, mostly those 3. zone 10 los americas in guatemala city was my favorite if i can i would fly back in a heart beat but i am currently broke so hopefully i can go back soon. good video by the way !
thumb up and subscribe, I really liked it, thank you!
😍
I've heard trash and littering is a big problem throughout central and South America. I don't think it's just about poverty, though. I think they need major public awareness campaigns. If everyone cleans up after themselves, it will make a huge difference. Dealing with the trash would create jobs, which are desperately needed in many of these countries. I know the governments do not have a lot of money, but I think this is a good place to spend it. Collect fines from businesses not disposing of waste properly.
Great video. Do you speak Spanish? Wold like to know more about how to go about volunteering as well.
You can find me on instagram and I can explain
Agreed! w/you about the people eco awareness 😢
They get money back for turning in old cans. It does make "cents".
why aren't you uploading anymore?
This wise traveler will absolutely love El Salvador..!!! Once she’ll set one foot in El Salvador….. she won’t want to leave El Salvador ever again..!!!
It is just a magnificent land…!! It is clean clean clean…. Not a speck of garbage nowhere..! Very pristine environment all around and everywhere….!!! And the food..!! Best food in the region and cheap, affordable, delicious, plentiful and safe, clean, just heaven to taste!!!!
The people, best in the region also…!! And plenty plenty plenty volcanos to see, climb up and enjoy…! There’s also plentiful rivers, lakes, and the best beaches in the whole wide world!!!! The sea is wild, good, a must to see..!! Paradise you may say…. And right on…!
You want to stay forever in El Salvador…!! It is just another dimension…!!!!!!!!! Very clean place…!!!
Guatemala is better. Guatemala has everything ES has and then some.
If your thing is going to the beach yeah I guess ES has some nice places now if you want the best climate, food, culture, nature, archeology I think I'll stick with Guatemala. (and yes I've been to ES many times)
I did like most of your comments. What I didnt like is the fact that you portray some of my people as ignorant and careless. Another thing that I didnt like is that you dont know Guatemala. Guatemala has 23 departments you bearly visited like 5 of those. So that doesnt make you knowlegeable of the country, neither to be in a position to give recomendations the way you do it. Sorry if you feel offended. We have a saying in spanish. Te trato como tu me tratas. Last but not least, yeah, there is but. Is that tireness and lasyness that you carry around when visiting places. You might need to see a doctor, he can recommend you some supplements and treatment to hype you up a little bit.
Saludos.
- your hair-game is strong... - it's sad so many languages are disappearing (I wanted to make an art related piece at some point which has to do with that topic) - love their dresses - as for the garbage, it sucks and it reminds me of the lack of consciousness when it comes to plastic in Georgia... - I think everyone should be charged the same entrance fee, local or foreigner... - how do your parents feel about you traveling solo...did they feel more scared in the beginning and now they've accepted it? Do you check in with them?
I subscribed girl. Give me a good tip for traveling in Guatemala City, Tkal, Flores
Very interesting. I learned a lot. But I'm horrified by the garbage. This is a problem in many countries.
Where are you from?
@@dianawanderlust I'm from Maine USA. But my daughter lived in Vietnam three years and the plastic and trash was a problem. It destroyed the natural beauty.
@@peggysherman2811 yeah I can imagine. Did she teach English?
@@peggysherman2811come to downtown LA 😂😂.
Did you notice where anyone could buy a washer or stove lol
Look at Canal Rayo de Luz ti really unterstand Guatemala.
where are you from? you got an accent
Georgia 🇬🇪
Also the trash from Guatemala it goes to El Salvador by the lempa river
Nice video ms. Diana WanderBUT. hard to please.
😂😂😂
They sell the plastic that’s why they use bags.
I like your video, but you showed the dirty street you should specify what part of the country you saw that cause in the city you don't see that amount of garbage.
You should make a video in los Angeles California, where there are blocks and blocks of homeless on the streets. If we compare, we can decide which place is worse.
I don’t think there is a competition about which city is more dirty. I just shared what I saw and drew my attention
Same thoughts for Riviera Maya, Mexico. Constantly kept being treated like a money sign, instead of a human being. I felt a total lack of compassion from natives and locals alike. Beautiful nature, but exploited without care for it. Won’t be going back.
omg throw needles into their oceans???? that's dangerous!!!! do you have any private drivers that can pick up from airport to lake atitlan? $150 is way too much for me to pay , and hoping for some direct driver contact
Unfortunately, the trash situation it is not just a problem in Guatemala but in many Latin American countries and other parts of the world.
I spend a good bit of time in Guate.
Pouring the cans into bags? That's because they get money to turn in the cans for recycling. The bags cost less than they get for the can. It's all economics. Living closer to zero makes these decisions much different.
Go to Japan you don’t have garbage there 😊 they take care of the world
I didn't realize how many European people live there
U wanna climb Volcano 😊

Dont you get told ia too dangerous for a woman?
