  • Green Belts are designated areas of open land around cities where building is restricted. The Metropolitan Green Belt (MGB) has encircled London for over 60 years. Debate about the MGB has intensified in recent years. Many see it as a vital policy that guards against urban sprawl. Others argue it is a cause of the housing crisis. In the face these heated debates the LSE project, A 21st Century Metropolitan Green Belt has investigated what form the MBG should now take. This film summarises the research project's findings.

London, compared to other european countries, is not that dense. Compared to cities like Paris and Madrid, London resembles more like american cities. In the UK and america there is a high amount of just 2-story buildings. If we could build up, then rents will decrease and the environment protected.

    "Is the Anti-Sprawl Measure good?"
"No, because it stops us from sprawling"
Planners build up to bring people to the city, developers build out to bring profits to their pockets. If the amenity of the Green Belt is as bad as you say, make it nicer.

Green belt what a laugh, where are the forests, streams and rivers for our children to explore, and play? The green belt in the UK is a mockery of a green space. Each city needs a green space that imitates nature, not just a belt of grass with a few trees.

Well technically it's a good start and allows room for adding more biodiversity as time progresses. Compared to urban sprawl in the USA or elsewhere, Britain would appear like heaven. But you are right, there's still tonnes of room to properly improve.

There is a limit to the capacity of the train lines leading from the green belt. The train termini like waterloo, paddington ect. are closing on max capacity. This is mostly due to a limit on how many people the tube system can carry. As a result at one point the train junctions won't be able to distribute all the extra people coming in from the suburbs. Even with upgrades they will soon reach your limit. Regardless of whether you build the homes, green belt or not, if people can't travel to their place of work the properties will be useless. I think the we have more of a transport issue rather than a space issue.

The decentralisation of the UK economy is also necessary. It's too heavily centralised in London.
Increasing the economic significance of cities such as Birmingham, Bristol, Norwich, Exeter, Truro, Plymouth, Cardiff, Swansea, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, York, Southampton, Salisbury, Lincoln, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Belfast will ease demand for both housing and commercial premises in London, making it less expensive to live there.

There’s so many remote places within the m25 and I’m not entirely sure why
The M25 is pretty much a large ring road that cuts through the Home Counties and it doesn’t really orbit London

I'd be prepared to support building houses on Green Belt land with low aesthetic value as long as the rural nature of the area is preserved. Pubs should also be allowed, of course, because you find those in rural areas. And a few other businesses, such as corner shops and launderettes too.
But incinerators should *never* be permitted on Green Belt land, *especially not* for general rubbish.

Sadly even trying to farm in green belt make is so difficult. How we supposed to progress as A country to be competitive or sustainable.?

Just remove the green belt already! Or move it more out of London. The city is growing too fast and the people have unaffordable housing or no housing at all because there is not enough room for homes

Heaven forbid that the countryside and all the nature it contains and supports should get in the way of people who want to live in London. Apparently not concreting over the countryside entirely has caused rents to become high. Let's make sure we wipe out the remaining meagre wildlife so that we can squeeze more people into London.

The environmental value of the land inst measured, maybe London could buy land else where to offset its development in the greenbelt?

British romanticization of 'the countryside' is one of Britain's greatest problems.
