    You said a mouthful at the end of your video, Dave. If the past few months have taught us anything, it's that thinking about our neighbors is also a matter of self-preservation, aside from being the right thing to do.

      I hope you didn't waste your money. I've had a Hofner since 1965 (2 of them) and there is no "fake" Hofner that plays well. You may think it is a good Hofner, but it isn't,

      @@BobBondi Bob, this is interesting. So you're defining "real" Hofner's as the ones assembled in Germany, and the Hofner's sold on the Hofner web site, such as the Ignition Pro Club that are assembled in Asia, as "Fake" Hofner's? I'm not disagreeing. There is a great disparity in price of course. The new Hofner "Ignition" Clubs assembled in Asia run for ~$400 US as new product. They are sold by the Hofner company as new Hofner product by their distributors. The Contemporary Clubs assembled in Germany are offered for about twice that new, $800. While the current special edition Hofner's, with runs of ~50 instruments, run for thousands. I have to admit, as a newbie, playing bass for just about a year now (but hard at it), I purchased a Hofner Ignition Pro Club in January and am VERY HAPPY with it. That is, after I finally figured out how to correctly string and tune and adjust for intonation with the help of sites like this one. ( :) Thank You Dave's World.). Still, for a newbie bass player with a price range at around $400 tops, you think it is a mistake to purchase a Hofner Ignition Club?

      @@BobBondi Btw, there is a great UA-cam comparison video where a guy who owned to vintage Hofners (67’ and 68’), who did a play test comparison with a brand new Ignition Hofner. UA-cam Title:
      Bass Shootout: 1967 Höfner 500/1 vs Höfner Ignition BB (no talking)
      He ended up selling the vintage Hofners and keeping the Ignition. In his words: "I like the Ignition better. It's like plug and play and it sounds good. The 67 is a real bitch when it comes to mixing, especially when playing live. It throws your standard amp settings overboard (I'll use my 77 JB and a Pbass most of the time), u got to change all the settings to sound okay. Additionally I have to say the PUs are pretty weak."
      Just sayin. But there’s no arguing against blind prejudice.

      @SpkillerGaming 3 роки тому +2

      @@BobBondi No shit there's a difference, but at the end of the day not everyone who picks up an instrument can afford to drop over a grand on one. There's nothing wrong with picking up an overseas one, whether it be for a show piece in your living room, or to play for fun. No one is advocating that it's as good as the german mades.. Quit makin yourself sound elitist.

I went with a Warwick Star Bass II (Rock Bass) which I Love, but it isn't quite the hollow sound of the Starfire or Gretch basses I have looked at. I am interested in a Club bass because they are inexpensive and thanks to you, now I know how the setup goes and how it sounds too. I think I'll get one and give it a good trial. Musician's friend and other online stores have a good trial period of 45 days, I think, so if I don't dig the bass, I can return it and only lose the shipping. Hey Dave, looking for a bit of advise. I own a repair shop called Auburn Guitar in Newbury Ohio. I've been using a Gurien 3 piece crowning file for years and love it. However, I do some many fret jobs I burn through the blades really fast. I recently ordered the diamond fret crowning file from Stew Mac, the one with the bend in it to make it safer and easier around the body of the guitar where it meets the neck, and was really looking forward to a file that would last me. I hated it! Absolutely impossible to crown a fret without removing material from the tops of freshly leveled frets. I think you prefer a triangle file for crowning but can you suggest from experience a good, long lasting crowning file? I like the Gurien because the cutting file is recessed perfectly and I never have to mark the frets to see if I'm removing material from the top. 1000's of jobs and it's never happened once. Damn thing just doesn't last. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

That's no excuse, little women play those big bad basses just fine, but just saying I want something I'll play. Then after I get into bass I'll have my long-scale too. Those Hofie club basses have a great sound, and look much easier to play, so I'm in! There is one on Reverb with a hardshell case that's a few years old, and in good condition.........?

Perhaps I missed the answer to my question or it was buried in the immense amount of comments, but I’m wondering what strings you recommend for the Hofner Club Bass. I have a 20 year old model that I bought new and would now like to experiment with some other strings. As I’m sure you are aware, there are many choices (Rotosound Monel Flats, TI Beatle Bass Flats, LaBella Beatle Bass Flats, etc.), so it can get quite pricey to try them all. I imagine the strings should only make contact with the saddle fret wires, not the bridge too. Do you think this affects the sound? I think today everyone needs to go buy a guitar just in case or a case. I've never seen a fight over buying a guitar. Come on folks let's all hoard guitars.You never know when your going to need one.

    Dave what's the exact specifications on the first fret height with feeler gauges you showed us the Gibson Les Paul what are those measurements on a Stratocaster I've been looking all over the net and I can't find it for some reason I've measured my Strat and it set up with the measurements of the Les Paul I didn't do that that's the way I got it it seems to play okay but I think it's supposed to be a little bit higher on each string yeah mine is exactly like you showed on the Les Paul it's not buzzing or giving me any trouble but Im pretty sure it's different my high e seems to be a little low it measures 00.9 I think it's supposed to be like 10 or 11 isn't it? Thank you Dave🤔😃😁

    I have a question for Dave... Do you fix many ESP ltd guitars? If you do, what is the main problem you see with them, if there is one.

      They're 'teacup' knobs, and are an old Hofner 'thing' - I have a 1956 Hofner President which has them. Oh, by the way - look up Hofner Control Panel on UA-cam. Hofner posted a video hosted by Budge Magraw explaining it.
      It's idiosyncratic, to say the least!

      I took the plunge on a Chinese made B&G Big Sister Crossroads bass, only by tech specs & visuals. Gut instinct said go. Unreal quality & finish. Only 2 QC issues, nut adjustment was not set correctly, & bridge pick up ground wire was not attached. I was bringing to my tech to swap out the rounds for flats.

    I notice that with the pickup config in the control panel, you shouldn't have any sound because both pickups are OFF, I don't know how is wired but it is not right... I know it says ON but it's not... take a look of this video ua-cam.com/video/oOvKhc9hlfY/v-deo.html

      @ Yea, I'm very happy with it. It's one from their "Ignition" series, meaning it's like a fifth the cost of the German-made ones.
      I'm one of those idiots who has dozens of guitars & basses but I always reach for my inexpensive Hofner.
      Plays and sounds great.

    why do you measure the relief with a capo on the first fret but then measure the action without? makes no sense

    • @AnisioLemos
      @AnisioLemos 3 роки тому +3

      Basically when you put a capo on first fret and fret at (generally) 15th you use the string as kind of a ruler/straight edge and can more clearly see how much relief there is in the neck, since to measure the relief means to know how straight it is or how up/back bow the neck has you can just completely remove the strings and use a actual straight edge to see the relief, but its not practical (to not say dumb). Now, when you measure the action you want to know the distance the string will travel when you are actually playing, so you don't need to use a capo to measure the action since you will never be fretting at the lower and the higher notes at the same time (unless you are two hands tapping, even so still doesn't make sense to use a capo to measure action).
      I hope I have explained well, I only grasped those ideas after lots of setups.
      Maybe drawings or mindfully doing 10 or so guitar/basses setup can be more intelligible than words to explain why it makes sense to do that way.
