This Mercedes SL500 has come into us for a modern sound overhaul to update the outdated head unit installed by Mercedes for some new functionality, and also to improve and rectify a struggling sound system.
The factory Mercedes head unit is showing its age, and the vehicle currently has a hands free system installed to enable phone calls within the car. This is all going to be removed, and replaced with a new modern headunit, as the customer has requested Android Auto functionality. Unfortunately, due to the worldwide chip shortage, head units are in short supply, so the exact unit to be used in this car is still to be decided - stay tuned to future episodes to find out which unit gets installed!
The sound system in the car is also showing its age. Being a convertible, a strong sound system is need to be able to enjoy music while also getting the roof down on a summer day. On the passenger side, the existing speaker has actually stopped working, so as well as rectifying the system, we are upgrading the components.
In the doors, we are fitting the Hertz APK 165P.3 component set. This features a tweeter and a driver, to give clarity, mid-bass and overall volume to the system. These will be installed in stock locations behind the door grills, and connected with all new connexions cabling.
These new speakers will be amplified by the Audison SR 4.500, which is 4 channel Class D Amplifier, with processing power. This amplifier has been chosen as an optimal solution for both power, but also form factor, as it can be hidden out of sight, potentially in the storage compartment behind the seats.
To add extra bass to the new system, the Eton 10 inch compact subwoofer is being installed in the passenger footwell. This subwoofer has its own built in amplifier which allows it to run actively without needing an additional amplifier channel alongside the speakers. The exact position for this is going to be decided when the install begins - we hope to install it discreetly out of sight below the floor, but dependant on space and access, it may have to be integrated within the carpet and be slightly on display, all of which was discussed with the customer in an audio consultation.
