Here after watching "Spencer" with Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana. I haven't heard this song in a long time. Great scene when they began playing it.
The line : "you never know what you've got till it's gone"...describes to a tee how I've felt about the 80s...I was 18 in 1986, my best time, and I miss it terribly....
The line you referenced (along with several variations) has shown up in songs from singers and acts such as Joni Mitchell, Chicago, and the group ‘Cinderella’. Based on my own personal experiences, no truer words were ever spoken. Cheers and best wishes!
Every video of the 80's the atmosphere that comes out of it is like no other. What a great time it was. Every day you woke up to another good song and another equally good song. So many good bands. I'm glad I have it in my blood ❤💥❤
With the late comedian Roy Kinnear as the band's manager, and the late Victor Spinetti as the vindictive nightclub owner. One of my favorite songs and music videos.
There was something magical in the mid 1980´s music. Songs like Africa, Drive, Broken Wings, The Riddle, What Is Love and All I Need Is A Miracle had the power of mesmerizing me, and still after almost 40 years I get this pleasurable and slightly melancholic feeling when hearing these songs.
I am a 60’s kid! Of course the music was just the best! But, I am a music lover! From Motown to the Beatles, rock and everything in between! I just heard this song on the tv show, the goldbergs! Everything 80’s!
Well I have finally grown old and can say that the 60's, 70's and 80's where the most beautiful and most memorable times my generation had ever had when it comes to music!!! My younger years SURELY were a BLAST!!! A million thanks to these Great Music!!!
This song reminds me of riding in my boyfriend's car freshman year of college. The 80's: when talking was the mode of communication, not texting. Teens and twenty somethings spent their time with other humans, rather than obsessively posting shots on social media looking for adoration. Underneath the big hair, big shoulders, and exaggerated fashion trends human contact was more organic. Music was simply about catchy melodies.
Love this band. Mike Rutherford is a genius and R.I.P to Paul Young who sang vocals on this amazing song.. He passed away far to young at 53 I'm sure... I'm sure he'd be proud of Paul Carrick taking over. x
Growing up during this time was really special. Cruising with my girlfriend tight at my side, two more friends in the back, songs like this playing loudly on the Pioneer stereo, hitting all the popular spots and getting burgers and shakes afterward; we thought it would never end.
A fine song from a fine band. RIP Paul Young, I was a fan of your voice ever since Every Day Hurts with Sad Cafe. RIP Roy Kinnear, you were a great actor and a nice guy.
Thank God I grew up in the seventies and eighties... Man what an great earkeeper this great song is.... It reminds me those day's will never leave the both of my ears...
I growed at three decades, 70,80, 90s , and for alll i can remember my best days where on the 80's, so im stuck n 80,s col days, nice music, good movies, clear air, food , all wasgood.
I probably left this comment once a while back, but here I am again. After playing this hundred of times on the air it was years before I really absorbed the video. A great storyline complete with Roy “How Much Do You Want for the Golden Goose?” Kinnear (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as the band’s manager. Totally epic!
I was 13 but these were the best days for all youthful expression/desire to be Yamaha savvy and musician miraculous, even if you were a shop-keep assistant.
I was so happy and so sad at the same time when this song came on in the movie Spencer. Only few films can make you feel such contrast in your spectrum of emotions.
I remember seeing this in heavy rotation on MTV back in the 80's. Loved it the 1st time I heard it. How could you not like that infectious chorus? The singer (Paul Young RIP) is amazing. What a great pop song!
I remember when this song first came out. I would sit in front of the radio with my tape player waiting for this song to come on so I could record it. Best days ever.
I was born “1974”, anywhooo……I remembered hearing this song play on Sirius XM Satellite 80s on 8 in I think “2011”. I bout broke my neck leaping from the kitchen running for my remote so that I can turn this song up!!! 😂 Of course I didn’t actually bout break my neck but my husband thought I was crazy, I said IT’S A GOOD SONG!!!! 😶 Was worth it!!! LoL 😂 I do this all the time over my 80s music 🎵
I’m an 80’s baby and I have never seen the video for this. What a sweet story! The look on his face when the guy gives him the money; the look of surprise and joy along with the music...it got me.
This was a great song in 1986 I loved it Mike in the mechanics were a great group I wish they still made music like this today's music sucks why can't they bring back the '80s why does rap have to go on for three decades why can't the 80s music go on that long that was music worth listening to not the rap crap today
i would love to find a way to go to the time span 1970-85 and live in there for a while, knowing what i know now, turning 50 in two days has made me really see things differently and the people i would be thrilled if they just went away
Its Jamie Davies can you tell me again please that there's more than billions of people all over the world that love living on their own and love having their own independence and love having their own space too just the same as me please reply back yes Deffo James mate.
Occasionally, I remember Phil Collins. And occasionally, I remember Mike Rutherford. The music of the 80s is truly nostalgic. To feel moved once again.
Here after watching "Spencer" with Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana. I haven't heard this song in a long time. Great scene when they began playing it.

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
Yes :(
goosebumps every time!
Yes same here.
Wont see an era like this again in our lifetimes...damn shame.
The line : "you never know what you've got till it's gone"...describes to a tee how I've felt about the 80s...I was 18 in 1986, my best time, and I miss it terribly....
So was I amigo: the glory years and we didn’t know it.

Wasn't the 80's fun? We were young music loving kids. This song brings back so much of the beat and uplifting feel of going back to the 80's. ..
Yes it does remind me of how I was really truly happy inside I just didn't know it then, because I was just a kid!.
Weren't.
"Weren't the 80s fun."
Past tense.
Truth Indeed
Here after watching " Spencer " today and came immediately to search the song, I want to thank them to let me know this beauty
I miss the 80s so much it makes me want to cry.
Blamed u
It's still here in the music we adore.
Best decade ever
the real feeling
These were “men” in 80s? They’re more androgynous then then they are now!!!
With the late comedian Roy Kinnear as the band's manager, and the late Victor Spinetti as the vindictive nightclub owner. One of my favorite songs and music videos.
1986 , in my bunk bed , with my cheap ghetto blaster & a tape of Mike & The Mechanics , Good Times😄
Ah, the 80s. Synths, electronic drums and melody.
All of the 80s must was great.
I think Africa might be my #1 most hated song.
Man, I just love the 80s. Wish I had a time machine.
So lucky that I was a child who grew up in the 80s. Can someone please take me back?
I'll take you back.
Remember these words for the rest of your life.😊
I am so honored and proud to be the child of 80's.
Brilliant, everybody was so happy back then - I hate the world so much these days 😫

Great decade, great music!!! Nothing like the 80s. 😢
The 80s was larger than life. Music was the best and life the greatest!
Growing up during this time was really special. Cruising with my girlfriend tight at my side, two more friends in the back, songs like this playing loudly on the Pioneer stereo, hitting all the popular spots and getting burgers and shakes afterward; we thought it would never end.

"Look At the Crowd, the place is practically dead"
place is packed with people enjoying the performance
A fine song from a fine band.
RIP Paul Young, I was a fan of your voice ever since Every Day Hurts with Sad Cafe.
RIP Roy Kinnear, you were a great actor and a nice guy.
I thought that was Roy Kinnear. Didn't falling off a horse contribute to his death? RIP both of them.

So glad I grew up when these jewels were on the top of that greatest music era, they still shine and sound timeless from far away.
Look, I like this song too but "timeless" is certainly not a word I would use to describe it lol. This is very clearly and specifically 1986
