Introduction to the Nord Micro Modular Synth

- A very brief overview of the Nord Micro Modular and how I like to patch it so that it plays with itself.
I hope to do more with this box of tricks soon, in the meantime smug pants awarded for anyone who can tell me why there is such a clear separation in the panning of most of my noodlers.
Hope you enjoy.

This is a great video! Very good and helpful. Your videos are so awesome!!
Also the most popular one to date on the channel.
made my night great video and the synth is amazing remember using this ages ago what a beast :)
So glad you enjoyed. Still use this all the time and still making videos about it. Probably my favourite synth and yes.... it is a beast!!
Love the micromod 🖤 - love to hear more about how you cook your noodles!
I have a couple of other videos on the topic of noodle cooking on here, and another few on the way. Subscribe and comment because that's what keeps me coming back to do more.
Damn ... a complete Pink Floyd intro coming out of this tiny red box. WICKED!
You would be surprised to see what you can do with this. There is more to come from this I am part way through a series where I turn it into a groovebox in its own right.

Wow awesome. I gotta look for one of these.
They are still about. The full Nord Modular is like 4 of these in one box with plenty of nobs and there is an updated version with more complex modular components but it is a really good way to get a feel for modular ideas.
Nice Renditions of Pink Floyd's "on the Run"👌👍👍 I really dig the "Nord micro modular". I appreciate you making a video on this. It would be cool to have a video where you list all the different types of "sound modules" that are inside it. I've always been curious?✌
No worries, happy to oblige. I have an idea for a whole series showing how to make noodler patches. There is a lot to unpack including working within the limits of the DSP load.
Definitely heard some Pink in there! Sounds just like a Lead-2x: minus all the knobs! Fun Video, keep the sounds going
Yeah, a little tribute in the madness. The lack of knobs can be a pain, but I plug it into a doepfer pocket control. Nearly everything on the modules can be controlled by CCs so you can build some quite insane instruments. I have some ideas for a few more Nord videos if you like that kind of thing.
Cool device. I’m looking for another Nord for my rig. This one is interesting to say the least.
I have had this for years, It is kind of the baby of the Nord modular family. The real time controls are a little limited and without fx it's a little dry but it can sound amazing and takes up almost no space. They can be quite pricey nowadays though.
How neat was that Floyd part!
Cheers, glad you like it but I can't take all the credit for that one. It was a patch I tweaked a little.
I have a dumb question, can you send MIDI notes to the NMM? I have the NMM up and running fine on OSX via wine and I'm using a MIDI interface to my comp. In ableton i'm sending midi to my midi interface and i can actually see the interface lighting up when a midi note is sent but i can't find a module in the software that sends notes. Thanks
Just need to clarify this are you talking about sending notes to the NMM so that you can play it via MIDI like a regular sound module?
As far as I can work out it is not possible to send midi notes from the NMM. There is a keyboard input module on the in out tab though.
@@DocBolus yeah that's what i meant. damn. I can get it working with my keystep via midi which has a sequencer which i guess i'll keep doing. thanks for the input!
@@conk971 are you using a patch that you have already had playing on the keystep? It might be that the patch needs to have a gate connected up to the envelope. Without seeing the setup I have kind of run out of suggestions. Sorry I couldn't help more.
@@DocBolus no worries at all. you answered my main question! which was no midi from albeton to NMM. thanks for the reply :). i have the keystep working the way i want it.
Have you tried the Axoloti? Modern DIY take on a follow up to the .micro modular. Very similar in approach
No not heard of it. Will be heading to google later.
Just working on another micro modular video now as it goes.
@@DocBolus once you've had a look at the Axoloti check out Akso (zrna.org/akso/shop) another developer just released upgraded hardware for the same platform. The Axoloti patcher is the main thing, v easy to use.
I was doing some digging into the axoloti last night and it looks very cool. I like the idea that you can build custom boxes and controls. If I had any talent I would have a box with 4 sliders and 3 banks of 4 dials.
Will check out that other project.
@@DocBolus a lot of folks seem to use this kit instead of building their own www.thonk.co.uk/shop/axoc the forums are fairly active and it's easy to get help with projects, there are easy to use community objects for adding OLED screens and someone recently added objects for using 4051 chips for adding shitloads of potentiometers quite simply.
the pink floyd patch is amazing tell me how?
Not mine I'm afraid. It was on the machine when I got it, but I may dissect at some point.
What kind of computer do you have? I have been interested in the nord modular/micromodular for years, but have heard that getting the editor to run on modern computer, especially a Mac, is difficult. These must be good and I think people are rediscovering them because price on a micromodular has risen from $400ish to $700+ish over the past couple years. Also I liked your patches in here.
Hi I run linux on my PC and the last version of the editor for the micro modular runs fine through WINE.
I use a USB to MIDI converter that I picked up as cheaply as possible on Amazon or Ebay, can't remember where but being a tight arse it probably wasn't much more than £5, probably less.
Thanks for your interest, do subscribe because I will be coming back to the MicMod again. People seem to like it.
@@DocBolus This also helped me with my problem. Thank you :) USB to MIDI cable is the solution
@@luiscanela1321 Glad I could help. More micro modular stuff is on it's way so please subscribe
it works great on Mojave via WINE (Catalina will be a different story) - i use an iConnect Midi 2 for the editor and midi lines - dead easy
@@DocBolus any chance there is a new editor for MAC OS 12
any links for download nord patches?
I have a little collection here docbolus.com/product/nord-modular-patch-collection/ cannot remember what is on it but your welcome to have a play.
great job, is it possible to get some of these patches.
Cheers, yeah let me know which ones and I will work something out. Maybe DM me on Twatter. I am going to start a how to series on the Nord so would definitely start on that sooner if I knew peeps were interested. Just want to finish doing something with my Monotron and SU200.
Thanks for the comment and support BTW.
@@DocBolus
cool,
like these patches:
5:52 72bpm
6:05 chordpad drum
6:30 spacewibble.
If these patches are included in the factory sounds for Norde Modular, then I can download them myself from their website.
cheers
I am pretty certain they are patches I wrote myself a good few years back. I shall check them out when I get a chance and let you know. I have a habit of getting rid of presets when I can unless I really really like them. The on the run preset was stock I think.
I bought the thing second hand about 15 years ago so could not tell you for sure what was on the stock list anyway.
it works stand alone or only computer nested??
You have to program it on the PC but then once you have a set of patches saved on it you can plug it in to any MIDI sequencer. Thats one of the reasons I love it as a bit of a DAWless hardware type.
what exact cables do i need to hook this up? and do i need a keyboard or not
You can get away without a keyboard, as it has onboard sequencing. But a keyboard definitely makes things easier.
To hook this up, you need a USB to MIDI converter cable (dirt cheap on Amazon). Make sure they are the old school DIN usb style. You then need 2 cables to connect to the converter to allow you to program the thing. You also need to download the patching software.
If you are using a keyboard as well, you will need another cable to connect it to the MIDI ins on the box.
@@DocBolus you say "You then need 2 cables to connect to the converter" would 2 guitar cables work or what am i looking for
@@digimondude4205 No you need 2 MIDI, Din cables... a bit like this
www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Matters-Pack-Pin-MIDI/dp/B07RLLJ91J/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=26M1WMNWC492S&keywords=midi+cable&qid=1674584968&sprefix=Midi%2Caps%2C87&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1
@@DocBolus "then need 2 cables to connect to the converter" whats the converter your talking about? Do I have to buy something else to convert the signal?
@@digimondude4205 Give me a couple of days and I will make you a video showing you exactly how it works.
