Here on UA-cam to share tips and tricks I have learnt with the various bits of kit, answer questions and share a hardware jamming Synthtube lifestyle.
New half arsed tutorial every week covering tips and tricks using the kit I own, although sometimes I might lead off with my own opinions and general hardware jamming chat.
New audio track every week thanks to the hardware jams challenge group on facebook.
Just an old fart with his musical toys.
I could pretend to be young but I think the grey balding head might give the game away.
That and my lack of social media nous.

Sound like a BOC chord progression, nice
Cheers, quite a compliment there.
What a great video, and let me say, the series of videos dedicated to the Micro Modular are just spetacular and for me was a game changer on my approach to the MM sound design. If you have the time and the patient can please ask for a video dedicated only to the "audio in" and the audio effects modules on the MM. Keep up your excelent work..best
Thanks, appreciated. Glad that you got something out of it. I am busy IRL and will be for a while, but if I can squeeze a video about the audio in and the fun you can have with it I will.
@@DocBolus wow, big thanks. best
brilliant you saved me tonight nice one
No worries, you made me feel like a f'kin superhero ;-) Makes it all worth while if someone is helped out.
This video has been extremely helpful! Thanks! However, I keep getting popup messages anytime I try to run the editor with the Micro Modular connected. They say stuff like "lost contact" and "out of memory." Any tips?
It might just be a loose connection on the MIDI or some kind of MIDI configuration issue. You need to make sure that the editor is using the MIDI interface that the modular is connected to. Out of memory could be that you are putting too many modules into a patch. Remember it has a limited DSP load? Hope that helps a little.
Great stuff !
Thanks glad you found it useful
Dr Who at the end too
This one takes me back a long time.
@@DocBolus the passage of time mystifies me. We are not getting old though, right ;)
@@classic_adventure No just getting younger in reverse!!!
@@DocBolus i can totally accept that!
I like that beat. I use my Acorn Electron to produce similar sounds. I think you either love it or hate it when its that gritty
Yep, dirt like that has it's own charm and is very marmite.
@@DocBolus absolutely
Love this 🛸💚
Cheers man.
Hello, I really like how you expressed your journey with drones very poetically. I love drones and feel the same way. I recently started using Behringer Crave and found your videos. Thank you for that! I wish you many wonderful experiences creating and producing music. 🙏
Cheers, music is there to let us tell stories to ourselves that couldn't be written down.
Excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to do this. I'm picking one of these this week and looking forward to getting my teeth into it. Could i ask, does the DIN MIDI out send the sequencer signals out to drive another device or is it just a thru/bypass? Also i see there is a line out, that 3.5mm one, is that stereo or mono output? Sorry for the barrage of questions!
To be honest I haven't tried to drive an external synth with the onboard sequencer, but it is an interesting experiment. When I get some time back I might have a play with that. As for the output, there is a VCA/line output in mono and a stereo headphone out. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
@@DocBolus nice one! I'm thinking I might try doing the usb midi out to drive my wasp and then have the thru midi from that running into my c64 midi interface. So many choices! Anyway, cracking channel, glad I found you! Keep up the good work
@@classic_adventure Cheers appreciate the love. It's been a bit neglected over the last couple of years as real life has got in the way. Give it a year or so and I will have got some stuff done and be able to get back to some serious playtime.
@@DocBolus power to you man. Good luck! <3
Good stuff, really helpful. Thanks fren.
No worries glad it helped you out.
Your videos are great, they are helping me a lot, could you explain how SCALE/BEAT works?
Thanks man. That would probably take a video to explain properly so when I get some time back to start recording again I will put something together, but in the meantime the scale/beat sets the value of each step division. So for example if you set it to 32 then the sequence plays back double time. This can be useful for filling in rolls, so a single 16 step sequence would only be half a bar. Not sure if that is very clear but I hope it points you in the right direction.
3 years later this is still a valuable content. This original TD-3 at full distortion sounds lovely especially for the price nowadays. PS: I was looking for ways to combine both crave and TD-3 with patch cables.
Thanks, glad people still find this stuff useful. I just don't have as much time to play nowadays. Combining the Crave and TD-3 is a little limited, but should be possible in theory using the Crave for processing the sound from the TD-3.
Oh man I really appreciate how do you bring all this value in this video and all the time and effort you put into this just for us I really appreciate it because I think this gear is so amazing thank you very much
No worries my man. I'm just glad people find it useful and when I can I like to share what I have picked up. Thanks for the thanks, I appreciate you too.
Awesome video and thanks for making it, I may pick one up but have 3 Quick questions; 1. Once you are done setting up a patch and saved it, can you disconnect it from the PC and bring the Micro Modular to another studio or to a live gig, or does it always have the connected to a computer to work? 2. How many patches can you save on the unit ? 3. If you don’t max out DSP, is it miltitambrial? Thanks again!
No worries, glad you found it helpful... 1) You can save patches to the Micro Modular and then take them where you like. They will be in the machine so once you plug in a midi device and call up the patch you can use it. 2) You can save 100 patches on the unit, but they can be swapped with patches saved to your PC anytime. 3) It's not really multitimbral in that you can't play more than one patch at a time. You can however create patches which are multi layered with percussion, bass and lead lines all played on the same patch (though not via separate midi channels) Happy to answer any questions..
@@DocBolus Ah good to know! Thanks for the swift response. Only saw it now. Do you know if there is a way to still run the modular software on a modern mac?
@@RecMirage Honestly I can't tell you but I do run it through wine on a linux system so I guess a MAC windows emulator would do the job.
@@DocBolus cool thanks ^^

Thanks for watching. Mine is still going though I have to say I don't use it anywhere as much as I thought I would.
And here’s me playing live with an expanded Nord Modular rack, sequenced from a Squarp Pyramid. ua-cam.com/video/7oDS0l6i4zM/v-deo.htmlsi=W-FkAnNdKmOFU34V
Pretty sure im going to acquire one of these soon to complement my lead 3, microkorg, and virus snow. This is possibly the most intriguing synth I've run across so far. I already have a little ancient acer as an XPbox for the lead 3 sound manager. How much memory does the mmicromodular need?
Hi, memory will not be a problem this thing came out so long ago I originally ran it on a laptop that had less memory than the first generation of smart phones. More of an issue is getting the software to run, although it seems to work on a windows 10 machine I have.
vuk I looooove this
Thanks man, glad you found it useful.
Nice video. At the moment, I'm mostly interested in integrating my new E-4 to flesh out choruses of a couple of the recent rock songs I've recorded, even though this is a device aimed more at the electronic music maker. However, your manipulation of various sounds has made me interested in returning to ambient/electronic music again. Nice, experimental sounds you've created there!
Thanks glad you enjoyed and nice to hear that I have had some small part in inspiring others. I still drag out the guitar and just got hold of an R16 so have messed around with some rocky stuff recently (not that I have a lot of time ATM) and didn't think of using this for harmonies on vocal lines, but I might just give it a go.
few years old but as new Crave owner enjoy your videos sir 😊
Thanks. Nice to see it's still useful. I don't have as much time to make videos but they still appear from time to time so I hope to see you again.

If they are not in that collection I think I would have to zip up a new load but it might take a while. The real world is a bit busy at the moment so I don't have much time to play with my toys.
any links for download nord patches?
I have a little collection here docbolus.com/product/nord-modular-patch-collection/ cannot remember what is on it but your welcome to have a play.
the pink floyd patch is amazing tell me how?
Not mine I'm afraid. It was on the machine when I got it, but I may dissect at some point.
This is probably the best video out there. Very easy to understand thank you ✌️
Wow, praise indeed. Not sure it deserves that much credit. Glad you enjoyed.
@@DocBolus For the price, I don't think it can be beaten. I've always used the Microgranny 2.5 to morph voice samples but this little machine is far better quality. You've definitely decided that I need one. Thank you ✌️. I already own the S1, T8 and the J6. They are all amazing little machines.
Super helpful
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching. I appreciate that you found it helpful.
it works stand alone or only computer nested??
You have to program it on the PC but then once you have a set of patches saved on it you can plug it in to any MIDI sequencer. Thats one of the reasons I love it as a bit of a DAWless hardware type.
hey. someone figured out live transpose but he thinks its a bug. when the sequence is playing, the active track will transpose the sequence of that track if you hit a trig (instead of one shotting chromatically choking) but he cant figure it out reliably.
OOOooooohhhhh now that sounds interesting. Going to have to mess with that one. Thanks for the heads up.
I do a similar thing but with velocity. You can put a velocity range for each different voice of each different partial (putting different sounds on each partial) and then tell it to play a random velocity on each pad. I forgot that you can stack notes in the seq , like you're saying above, so this could get super crazy!!! Also i think you can put different voices on left and right , so you can also give it a random pan i think. So you could potentially on one pad, have 8 different voices programmed. Crazy!! If i make a patch with this I'll send a link. Also , i made a video a long time ago doing some of these techniques in a fake euro accent on my page years ago.
That sounds pretty wild, I haven't played with the velocity that much on the partials. I prefer the way that the drum pads work with the random chance probability it just suits the way my brain works. Will try and find your fake euro tutorial.
It is listed as a zenology tutorial although now you can do most of that in box
I did enjoy, I didn’t share…. 1). I don’t have any friends. 2). If I did they would think I’m weird…… 🤔….. Those imaginary friends, wouldn’t be wrong…😂
Nothing wrong with being weird. If being weird were an issue I would have no one view my channel at all..... Anyway friends are overrated.... There is always the tubes ;)
That's Brilliant. You just solved a few other problems I was trying to get my head around also cant wait to try this!!!
Glad to help, let me know how you get on.
I was about to sell my MC-101 but this video gave me another chance with this machine. Very cool stuff! Thanks for the tutorial!
No worries glad it gave you some inspiration. When they opened up the synth engine with the last update it was a gift. It is so powerful and just takes this box to another level.
@@DocBolus ikr!!!
Very nice video! I should definitely do the trick for a second track and stack pad chords and distorted guitar power fifths for the ultimate grit!!!
Cheers for watching. Yep, can be used for monstrous big sounds.
I really like the sound of this thing. I think the sound is right between Moog and EMS gear. And affordable too. Damn.. This will be my first hardwate analog synth in 20 years.
Yeah it does have it's own unique sound that I don't think has been exploited by emulator creators. Definitely an edge to a sonic arsenal.
Brilliant tutorial! Thank you. With this format could you for example have a bass syth note layer a kick drum?
I see no reason why not, they would both be pitched and I don't think you could create an actual kit with this, so it would just be a heavy thumping bass tone.
Cliffhanger! I'll have to come back now...
Don't hold your breath. The footage is there, time for editing may be a little longer. See you soon.
It seems a while since your last video Doc, good to see back👍💯
Cheers man, yes it's been a while. Life has been busy so I don't have as much time to play.
I’m new to sequencers and it was driving me insane trying to figure out how to make polyrhythms. Thank you so much for this!
No worries, I am sure there are other ways to do it, but this just made sense in the way my head works.
Let’s record a sample The ES-1mkII makes it very easy for you to record a sample. Sampled sounds (samples) can be easily assigned to the parts of each pattern. The sampling area of internal memory can hold a maximum of 95 seconds, with up 150 samples (100 monaural, 50 stereo). If the factory preloaded samples are rewritten or erased, they cannot be restored to their original state. If you do not want to lose the factory preloaded samples, purchase a SmartMediaTM card and perform the Save operation (☞p.55) to make a backup. If you run out of memory while sampling, sampling will stop automatically. Before you start sampling, use the Sample mode MEMORY function (☞p.32) to check the remaining amount of sampling time. Here’s how to sample the output of an audio device (e.g., MD or CD). 1. Press the Sample mode key (the key will light).Use the cursor keys [▲][▼] to make the parameter select LED indicate SAMPLE. 2. Connect the audio device that you wish to sample to the audio in jack (AUDIO IN). The jack is a stereo phone jack, but you may also use a monaural phone plug if desired. Use the Global mode AUDIO IN MODE setting to switch between monaural and stereo (☞p.54). 3. In the connection section, set the MIC/LINE gain select switch to the LINE position. 4. Turn on the AUDIO IN THRU key (the key will light) so that you can hear the input sound. 5. Either by adjusting the output level of the external device or by rotating the LEVEL knob, adjust the output level of the connected device so that the peak LED does not light even when the maximum output level is reached.
Here is a part of the page where you can find yourself in the manual Thanks again
I also saw the manual and I am going to send you a part of the page so that you can see where I am, please, maybe I am very lost but I need to see if you could help me. I will appreciate it. Thank you infinitely. Thank you very much.
very good evening dear, I am a teacher at a secondary school and I am currently learning to drive this electric smk2 and I have a problem because I see the manual I have read it several times I am already tired and bored that I do not understand it it does not work for me would you be so Kindly send me some small reviews on how to do it. There is undoubtedly a video in which I see it and they explain to me how to use the Audi City program but I still have the doubt because I have it connected to the computer, a base of an instrument that works below and not and it doesn't record directly, it doesn't record in a So I wanted to know, so I'm going to thank you. And first of all, thank you very much for your channel, which is still very interesting and has served me quite well. I send you a hug here from Chile now and thank you very much for everything.
Wow, didn't know anyone from Chile would watch. Let me see if I can help but can we take it a step at a time. It may take longer but I can try and narrow down exactly what you need by asking some questions. Are you trying to sample directly into the machine, or are you trying to load samples from a computer?
Super cool idea!
Thanks glad you liked, definitely fun to play with.
@@DocBolus I agree, love the way all these Electribes are designed. I've been experimenting with synthesis techniques lately and your excellent video has inspired me to layer, detune and "hard sync" a bunch of different sounds. Thanks.

Very cool, I really must get it to play with more often.
Yes , u should do this! 👾👾👾👾@@DocBolus
Ihave a question bout the pattern play. If I want to change a pattern while the synth playing, it changes at moment I push the button , for example at the rd6 the sequence plays till the end and than change the pattern. So is there a posibiliti the crave is doing the same? Is there a guide (even in english) about the „button 8“ , u know what I mean? If u push „hold & shift & 8“ u open a menu , but I really know nothing what u can do there! Aaand if hold shift and turn the VC MIX Uran also change some thing , but what, there has to be a guide for such things but I don’t find it yet…. Please an answere would be really nice..
It is possible. To be honest it's been a while since I last played with it as a sequencer, I have been using it as a module when I dig it out recently. The only manual is the quick start guide which can be found here mediadl.musictribe.com/media/PLM/data/docs/P0DPX/CRAVE_QSG_WW.pdf It's not super clear but can be useful.
Thanks , I know about this quick start guide but there is nothing about the menu at button 8 …. I allready have it here. It’s just the quick start guide but I have to go deeper now! Maybe I discover it by my self, I hope I don’t damage the whole thing!! Have a nice evening and thank u for the answer!@@DocBolus
