This is definitely the best structured/edited video I have seen from your channel. I very much like that this video is longer than your usual content. Keep it up dude!
@@TommyCBricks So how is your No way home MOC going? Having a bit of luck? and quick question, what do you think about the quality of Firestartoys figures? The prints are done with UV instead of Lego's normal printing process, but it looks really off and thick in photos and videos, but how is the quality in hand? also I think you could buy their Doc ock figure for your MOC he does look really good ;)
This is pretty much the best LEGO set review I've even seen, period. I agree wholeheartedly will nearly every one of your points--and I was blown away when you pointed out that this is a Speed Champions-wide scale train! However, I will point out that despite all of this set's shortcomings, the color of the train is actually correct. The books describe it as "crimson" (which is a bright red, rather than a dark red, which would be called "maroon"), and the movies and theme park have the train in bright red (the shadows and lighting simply make it appear darker).
Here is something that people often don't realise about the scaling of this model, yes it is definitely much larger than your usual Lego, but not only is the necessary added detail beautiful, the brand new scale is exactly identical to G scale, a real model railway scale often used for garden railways.
I think it’s a beautiful model, I don’t want to spend $500 on it currently, but I hope to have it eventually. It’s also a shame it didn’t come with the other epilogue figures.
I never got into the 6-wide Speed Champs cuz they looked like go-carts with just one fig in them. The 8-wides are great. I enjoy adding doors & spy-hunter guns!
A cool more hidden “feature” if you can call it that, the model is actually able to run on gauge one model train track, so there’s no need for a special 3D printed track part!
Personally I don't mind the new scale too much because standard Lego trains are definitely undersized. I just hope that if they're going this route they actually commit to it and at least provide curves and potentially find a way to motorise engines at this scale. Also I'd love to see a flying Ford Anglia done in this scale!
if this helps, its possible to make the train fit on standard track. just remove the tiny circle technic pieces in between the wheels, make the tender one stud taller, and make the axles in the driving wheels slightly shorter.
I think Lego is in an interesting transition period. Their "Adults Welcome" branding they've introduced seems to be Lego creating a new market of Lego Set: Large Centerpiece Display Sets. Stuff like the Hogwarts Express and the Black Panther Bust aren't traditional Adult-focused Lego products. They don't fit the mold of Large Lego Trains for a Lego City or Modular Buildings for Lego Cities. They are designed for fans of the property first and foremost. A Lego fan wouldn't care as much about a large scale Black Panther bust with no minifig, or a large scale Hogwarts Express/Platform 9 3/4 that can't fit on a regular Lego rail, but people who love and collect Black Panther or Harry Potter merch would absolutely make this a centerpiece of their display, kind of like a Hot Toys figure or statue. Lego still does cater to Adult Lego Fans with things like the Marvel Modulars, the 90th Anniversary Space/Castle set, etc, but they are starting to branch out to capture the attention of non-Lego fans to make them more Lego fans. I've noticed it a lot in the way sets like this are covered, not considering them as separate display sets rather than how they could be incorporated into a pre-existing display. Also, a note on the trademark issue with this set, I'm gonna take a guess that that issue isn't on Lego, but on the recent WB/Discovery merger. Something where WBD has given a mandate to reinforce trademarks on their merchandise, while the old guard didn't care as much. Given that this is probably the first set to be approved under that new regime, I'm guessing WB properties with sets are gonna have this trademark stuff as a problem going forward
Mhhh i don't know, a resin statue will look much better (in terms of accuracy) then any Lego set. You'd have to be a bit of a Lego fan as well as a fan of the franchise they're targeting to buy these sets.
@@piotr78 I dunno, I still see a lot of potential for these sets to do well as big centerpieces for someone who isn't an AFOL but wants a big statue of a character or a detailed model of a vehicle. If you're looking for "Black Panther Bust" you're probably gonna find the Lego set alongside a sideshow bust, and in that category, Lego is downright affordable at 350. (A 1:1 scale Spider-Man bust from Sideshow currently runs for $900) I dunno, I can kind of see the market these sets are going for, a big ticket one off purchase, even for someone who isn't already a Lego collector
I kind of agree with you about the scale. Clearly this isn’t intended for city/train builders, it’s designed to appeal as a one off purchase for HP fans more than anything else, much in the same way as the new 8 wide more detailed speed champions cars are trying to appeal as much as one off purchases for those who don’t regularly buy LEGO than LEGO fans and AFOLs. And I think this is also reflected in the minifigure choice. Yes there are lots of minifigures in one set but as you say they represent 4 distinct films/books from the series. Most people aren’t gonna display all 20 simultaneously I imagine but the ones from their favourite of the four films, again playing into the idea of it being a one off purchase for fans of the franchise more than fans of LEGO- I mean whilst it is a complex LEGO build and not easy for a Lego newbie, it’s far easier building a,ego set than building a model kit of the Hogwarts express which would genuinely require practical skill to create. 09:33 having misprints AND missing pieces on a set this expensive is ridiculous!
I agree with you on the scale, especially Speed Champions.I got into LEGO because of Ninjago, but Speed Champions, on the other hand. I didn’t get into from LEGO. I got into the theme from a racing video game called Forza Horizon 4.
If you take the minifigure as the defining factor, I am not even sure the scale is that far off. If you ever stood next to a big steam locomotive, you get exactly that impression of scale and grandeur. So as a standalone model, I think they got it right.
Late to the party, but something worth noting, this is 1/32 scale, otherwise known in the model train community as "Gauge 1" Anyone who's seen the old Thomas series, that's the size of models they used when filming. As someone who is into model trains and lego, but not actually the lego trains series this set as it exists does not scratch that itch. For what it wants to offer, especially at the price, it's not appealing. Detail is lacking in the cab (which the previous 80 dollar set managed to include a firebox, gauges and pipes) and to my understanding the front bogie doesn't actually turn making it so the engine can't actually be used on anything other than a straight piece for display. Again, this set is in an actual scale so you can buy tracks for it so the idea of it not being functional at this price is befuddling. I'll say this is going to exclusively appeal to the Harry Potter community expressly because it lacks detail, has the wrong color and the main focus of this thing is the minifigures and display of said minifigures. Removal of the display coach, the platform section, and putting a greater focus on making the locomotive have the details it lacks and reducing the price because we put the focus on the locomotive would have made this something actually worth my while. Until then, for those interested, in OO gauge, you can purchase a powered hogwarts express that has lights, sounds, for approximately half the price of this.
Superb video ! I am a huge Potter fan and Railway enthusiast and have always wanted a large lego steam train for display - prayers answered with this and I will be getting one perhaps 2 as I would like more than one coach and a longer platform. Great video - thank you !
Concerning the colour the locomotive it is actually more accurate with what it was made with, however the carriage would have been more accurate to be given the dark red colour. That said I do think the overall appearance of the set would have been "off" if it was done like this therefore keeping the whole thing one shade of red
YES! The books describe the color as "crimson" (bright red) as opposed to "maroon" (dark red). Plus, the movies and theme park have the engine in bright red, too (the dim lighting, shadows, and weathering from dirt and soot make it look darker).
@@kentslocum yea you got it! Jus so happens I can compare it to all the other models that have ever been made that I have collected an they are all the same 😎
I know I would particularly like to see $80 lego 8 stud wide “heritage steam” line. I would particularly like it if Lego made my designs for the Southern railway Ms class mikado and Ks-1 consolidation. The Ks-1 would use pre existing 52 scale inch drive wheels and the Ms would use a new XL spoked drive wheel. I have already built practical models of both.

I have a small problem with your review. 1. If adult Ron and Hermione were included, would you not then complain that their children weren't included? Then lego would have to add them thus increasing the price. 2. There isn't any need for conductors as this is a magic train. Tommy, This was a rather enlightening video. However, I do think there's a middle ground LEGO could've gone with, something that the Train AFOL community have been doing for years: Making the train 8-wide. An 8-wide train comes out to roughly 1:48th scale, and allows for both detail and playability. Of course, that's just my opinion. Either way, Thank you for this in-depth review, and I'm looking forward to what you have in store for later.
8-wide also works with compatibility, as you don't have to worry about any complex techniques to fit a 6-wide chassis, you can have a 1-stud overhang on either side. Sure it won't gel properly with the stations Lego puts out, but it's a happy medium between detail and playability.

I guess you could argue that the track that this set uses (Similar to Gauge-1 Model Track) could be considered Broad Gauge, which is quite larger compared to Standard Gauge
Finally, a review that talks about the design rather than just rant on about it being overpriced... blah, blah, blah. Great content. I also think the scale is spot on. Not sure what people are looking at but these old school trains are huge. I am happy that they finally did a proper scale train for minifigures. Even tho the price is really high and they should have replaced some minifigures but the build itself looks very very impressive and grand it’s a love letter to us LEGO steam train fans and opens an opportunity to have more steam trains from popular movies let’s just cross our fingers
19:19well if you think about the length of mark 1 coachs(which are british coachs) are the longest bit of rolling stock BR (british railways) and sense BR engines and stock are significantly smaller then us rails so the coach being to small I can't agree with but i get why you would say that and thats just my opinion
Cool I always wanted to do stuff like this whenever I was a kid with Legos but my family couldn't really afford them so I had to get very creative with the parts that I did have I never was able to fully build any of my ideas though it's awesome to see people do stuff like this it's really nice you think that you could do Big boy 4014 it was restored not too long ago it was the train that me and my grandpa were supposed to ride on but unfortunately he passed before we could do so
Like the dish used for the front of the train wouldn’t work at all and other pieces would have to be changed and be less detailed and this set would then be about the same size as the original.
I’m pretty people want to run this will find a way to make rails for it also it would be cool if we got extra cartridges in like a modular add on thing would be cool
I have a better definition of "true monifig. scale": the foot of a minifig, 1 stud, is equal to one foot. example: an intermodal container IRL is 40ft, so in lego it should be 40 studs
well if you have enough Lego bricks you could always make more brick track and have it like a g scale Lego train build I bought this set and its awesome in my opinion
I'm totally fine with lego creating high quality big sets, but one thing I keep saying over and over again is LEGO desperately needs a payment plan. I can understand that they might not wnat to decrease the price, but these sets that have a high appeal to anyone need to be just as accessible. If you could dinaly break down payments, I imagine more people like children could finaly get these big sets.
This is a terrible idea, it’s just saying people should go into debt for Lego. As much as it might sound nice, it’s just asking for issues. PayPal might let you split payments, but even then… buy now, pay later/break up payment things are a real bad hole for many to fall down. Especially ESPECIALLY children
But that’s not who most of these larger sets are for. Ucs sets, The over 200$ Marvel sets, the Modular’s, Ideas, and other more expensive sets aren’t targeted at kids. Now some of them definitely feel like sets that are perfect for kids, Modular’s, Ninjago City, Mos Eisly, and other 18+ sets that seem a lot like not 18+ (Like the Galaxy Explorer)
@@bruced09 That’s their decision. If their parents want to let the kids risk it, then that it absolutely their choice. And regardless, many many places have online options like this, even just for $20 t shirts lol. It’s not like this is some newfangled idea that’s never been tested
@@Jay-Zech yeah, a lot of places have these things because it’s putting you in debt. They want you to fall behind, or even just take to the end so they can make more money from the interest. Just because it’s not new doesn’t mean it’s good…
Here is the thing: If I want to have a hogwarts express to only look at, there are much more cheaper non lego options. If I want a running version, there are cheaper modeltrains. I dont care about the minifigs and I cant run it with my other lego trains.

Theres no question this set should have been 7 WIDE.7 wide is a perfect scale for the model to run on city tracks without compensating detail!
This set is 10 wide though which means you would have to give up some details.
Like the dish used for the front of the train wouldn’t work at all and other pieces would have to be changed and be less detailed and this set would then be about the same size as the original.
@@Vor1ki Mostly the details in the carriage would have to go which is a shame but they could do that and focus more on the build of the station.
If Olton Hall would see this hed explode
I also bet someone will make a track for this train and probably future sets
I’m pretty people want to run this will find a way to make rails for it also it would be cool if we got extra cartridges in like a modular add on thing would be cool
That was an amazing intro
I hope they don’t do this if they do docs train from back to the future
I hope they do I know the time train would be great on a lay out but doing it at this scale would be fantastic as the detail would be insane
@@TommyCBricks I would be happy if they gave us a attachment to put on the Deloreans to put it on the tracks
I have a better definition of "true monifig. scale": the foot of a minifig, 1 stud, is equal to one foot. example: an intermodal container IRL is 40ft, so in lego it should be 40 studs
well if you have enough Lego bricks you could always make more brick track and have it like a g scale Lego train build I bought this set and its awesome in my opinion
it would take huge guts to buy another for, another carage, and longer train rails
You’re absolutely right!
Just because it’s not new doesn’t mean it’s good…
What triggers me is there is no smokebox handel to open or close it 😢
Absolutely would prefer 6 wide cars for scale reasons. The 8 wide cars look ridiculous next to a minifig
Here is the thing:
If I want to have a hogwarts express to only look at, there are much more cheaper non lego options.
If I want a running version, there are cheaper modeltrains.
I dont care about the minifigs and I cant run it with my other lego trains.
I'll be getting the razor crest instead
the scratches on the skirts is human error, that's on you...not lego
I know that’s why I was saying be careful?
Aaaarggggghhhhhh. Nice review
Omg I love your LEGO hogwarts express and this set but not that much as your hogwarts express
video soon ;)
Cool new profile pic
I still want a mods video btw!
In the works
I was hoping so. Here's a suggestion: try using 2x2 dish pieces of cover the top of the light bricks.
i think it could work on g scale track
to be honest, steam trains ARE GIANT, so it fits the scale in lego
Its 800 dollars for me
This is basically a modular train
Tbh I want a flying Scotsman version
just get a lot of the old blue rails...train runs.
Cool
Lego train people sound toxic
Terf train lol
Lego fans when printing
MMMAAAADDDD
You could have just said UCS hogwarts express and saved 29 mins on the video?
I realy wan't a lego polar express
too expensive Lego Harry Potter collector series train 🚉
Goddam, patent and sell your speed champions argument to Lego
Nope for me
It's just to expensive
So glad this is retiring, what an awful set.

I more want Lego to make a set of the Polar Express. That is my favorite movie train. But as long as it can go on the official track pieces. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
