  • After seeing the cost of replacement finned brake pads for my Shimano 105 brakes on my Ribble CGR Ale , I decided to look into alternatives. This is what my research turned up and this is what I did. In this video I replace the finned pads with non finned ceramic versions. See how it worked out.

    Well done Roy, I came to a similar conclusion and have fitted non finned pads to good effect.
    On another point I recently discovered that my emotion control will link with my Wahoo element bolt to give battery level and drive modes, just pared it in as another Bluetooth link.
    Sorry if you’ve already published that but it’s been a real game changer for me as don’t have to have iPad app running to get same info.
    Regards. Rod.

      No, I didn’t know that, Rod. That certainly is a game changer. I’ll see if I can get hold of a Bolt to try it. I’ll also see if it will work on my Garmin. Thanks for a great tip.

      Rod Hudd, are you able to control the assist levels with the wahoo?

    • @rodhudd6778
      @rodhudd6778 2 роки тому +1

      @@scunnypaul Unfortunately not, you still use the button built onto the cross bar. However you can see which assist level you are in on the Wahoo screen (and what battery charge you have)and by controlled button pushes it is easy to scroll the settings round to where you wish to be.

      @@rodhudd6778 thanks for letting me know. Roy tried to sync with his Garmin but it didn’t work. Good info though 👍

    Those new brake pads you put on look exactly like my trp brake pads I use on bike's, just checked out the website, going to get my next lot from them, might try ceramic pads normally use resin, I usually buy 6 sets at a time, so always have spares.

    i replaced my shimano deore pads today with the same resin material without fins, my type of riding is mostly on smooth roads and sometimes gravel rides, i never encountered my brakes failed on me.
    the brakes pads with Fins looks more cooler but double its price though.

    Another very informative video, very clearly explained. BTW noticed a lot of the paint had come off your frame do you think this is common around the axle/wheel area. Keep them coming brightened my night on a very wet and thundery N. Ireland.

      Thanks, Colin. The paint is the one negative about this bike, for me. The finish is beautiful but it chips terribly. It seems like quite a brittle paint. I asked Ribble for touch up paint but no response. I did buy some acrylic model paint that’s a good match so must get around to touching up that area. I am about to make a follow up video of the CGR after 3500 miles and I’ll cover this, so will touch up afterwards. I love Northern Ireland, and the Irish. I worked with a company in Monaghan, just across the border, where lots of the workforce travelled from the north.

    I didn't buy the same brand you used but I did get the ceramic compound pads from a company that specializes in pads only. Much better braking now. I'll never buy Shimano pads again. The fins are just a gimmick IMO anyway.

    Disc brakes: Bussinessmans dream of expensive components. As always Roy good vid.👍

    That is great, thanks a lot. Can I use WD40 for degreasing? I am hesitant because as far as I know it does contain some lubricants as well

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  7 місяців тому +2

      I definitely wouldn’t use WD40 anywhere near brakes because, as you say, it does contain oil. A good water based degreaser is ideal, as long as you don’t get it in any bearings 🙂

    Have now bought and fitted the Noah & Theo resin pads to the road bike - 105. So far so good - thanks for the tip. Do the ceramic pads offer more bite?

      They don’t seem any different to me, other than quieter.

    Fin pads definitely have the cool factor but I can't justify that price

  • @benmillns8976

    I've just changed to these pads on my MTB with XTR M9100 brakes. I think the stronger spring has changed the lever feel, almost like the bite point has changed.
    Thought I'd gone mad after changing the rear pads and then found the exact same with the front.

    Non finned are much cheaper I went non finned for my Ultegra brakes and saved £££s, the guy who maintains my bikes is an ex tour mechanic and says there is no need for them in the UK.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  2 роки тому +1

      That’s good to know, Andrew. If it’s good enough for the tour it’s easily good enough for me 👍

  • @SeeYouUpTheRoad
    @SeeYouUpTheRoad 2 роки тому +1

    The fins are a joke! So not needed. You can do more with brake compound than you can with fins. We DO have steep ass hills here and non-finned pads are just fine.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  2 роки тому

      I guess the fins are essential for extreme riding, but there won’t be many of us doing that - and certainly not me. The non finned ceramic pads are working perfectly for me.
