- Photographing rodeos, parades, pageants and everyday life in Texas and the American South, Rahim Fortune's images of champion cowboys and rodeo queens celebrate Black American history, traditions, pride and resilience.
Watch as Fortune unpacks the stories behind the striking images in his series 'Hardtack', shot exclusively in black and white. Hear about his inspiration from the historic American documentary photographers Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans and Russell Lee, who, while working for the US government, captured southern life throughout the Great Depression and early 20th century.

This is so beautiful yet powerful seeing these as a Texan / Houstonian 💙♥️
Beautifully informative. Thanks for this!
This was really interesting, thanks for it!
Intelligent, and visually stunning!
I could listen to his knowledge about this beautiful culture all day. ❤
The pictures in black and white to me shows more color of the object that the person behind the camera 📷 is trying to tell us about.

Sorry, but I hate rodeo and think it should be forbidden, not celebrated
Fair enough, but I think it also is about the long presence of African Americans in the cowboy culture of the South, not just about their participation in rodeos. Is there a particular reason you dislike rodeo?
The animal abuse is horrific in rodeos. We need to stop glorifying using animals for human purpose and entertainment.Like bullfights and circuses etc etc. Enough. So,although I appreciate this young man's vision and talent,I disagree with his use of subjects, that are portraying animal abuse.
It's all so tiresome
