Just watched this and was surprised how much I genuinely loved it. There's something elegiac and graceful about this film. I'm old enough to remember the bad publicity and the stories. But recently I've been reading about the making of this film and find it fascinating. All the actors involved, including Kristofferson, Huppert, Mickey Rourke, Bridges and Walken speak fondly and warmly about Camino thier experience filming HG. Ryan, if you get a chance listen to a more recent TIFF conversation with Isabelle Huppert where she talks about it, she calls it one of the greatest experiences of her life and career, and she calls it a masterpiece. When artists are that committed I think becomes more than a film, but a life experience.

This one sure did derail Cimino's career, though there's one film he made after this that I think is pretty decent and underrated, Year of the Dragon, which has Mickey Rourke and was co-written by Oliver Stone. It's about a cop/Vietnam vet trying to take down a Triad boss in NYC. It's definitely worth checking out. Anyway, great vid, keep 'em coming!

What an epic review for what seems like an epic movie! Thank you so much for such an informative and educating review. I LOVE it when you can give a movie a second chance and see it in a new light. I'm a big fan of epic movies so I'm gonna have to check this out. Awesome, awesome video my friend!

Luckily in the UK and Europe, this film and Once Upon a Time in America were released in their full versions, which is why they were much better received than in the states, which butchered both.

Never give a film director a blank check.

'Heaven's Gate' is one of cinema's true marvels, a beautiful and poetic elegy that sticks with you for a long long time. I adore the film!

I saw it in theatres last night. The 2k restored criterion version released for festivals. It was amazing on the big screen and big sound.
But having seen the same version on bluray, I don't think it has the same effect.
It's a film built for the big screen.

Hey Ryan..you have definitely sparked my interest in this movie. A Criterion I just bought recently and watched was " 12 Angry Men". It looks great on blu-ray and its such an intense film

I've seen this movie all the way through a few times. It's strange to me. For a movie that is shot beautifully, has many great scenes, and has good acting, it's utterly boring when I try to grasp it....it drags on and on and on. Plus, living in Casper, Wyoming, and living in Wyoming all of my life, why was this movie not shot in Wyoming? The real Casper, Wyoming, doesn't have some bizarre-looking mountain near the town...it's got a formidable mountain range to the south.

I bought the old vhs version and liked it. I see no point in getting the newer releases. The vhs is good enough for me.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is a fun little action flick, very different from Heaven's Gate and The Deer Hunter! I''m overjoyed that you loved Heaven's Gate too! I've only seen it on the crappy DVD but I still loved it, I think I'll get the Criterion Collection version too!

People need to forgive Mike Cimino and give him a second chance. Yeah, he may have made a horrible mistake when making Heaven's Gate, but that's in the past. It's ancient history. I have The Deer Hunter on DVD and it's one of my faves. MC does have the potential of being a really good director if everybody would give him the benefit of the doubt. He even admitted to screwing up big time with Heaven's Gate so everyone needs to cut him some slack.

Its a classic. People are so slow in the West-I would have thought they would have understood it by now.

Loved "The Deer Hunter" but never saw "Heavens Gate" since it was one of the biggest flops in cinematic history. I was 16 when it came out and just wasn't interested in it. I will actually give it a chance and see what I think now.

To this guy and all the other haters...PPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLL! What's YOUR idea of a great film? Infinity Wars, no doubt, and THAT to me is a turd in a swimming pool. What a piece of totally disappointing, audience-cheating CRAP! Take THAT, fanboys!

Great review Ryan, but I gotta disagree. I just finished watching it and it's one of the worst films I've seen in a while. Wasn't a fan. Awesome video though!

Thanks for watching! Yea it is most definitely love it or hate it, like I said I hated it and turned it off half way through. Its funny how much I love it now. Thanks again for watching dude! That's cool you gave it a chance too!

Its a terrible film and almost no critic who talks about shows how CImino completely altered the major characters and their actions. For what? Because the film never builds dramatically or characterize wise. And anyone who can praise Kris Kristofferson does not know anything about acting.

A lot of the negative reviews were far worse than the actual movie because they were just pointless smartypants carping.
