Dave Wisdom - 1) tube amps aren’t going anywhere; 2) loud guitars onstage are just better; 3) bands shouldn’t rely on backing tracks to play live
This was one of the best Dave Friedman interviews I’ve heard. Great questions, I love Dave.
Dave gained even more of my respect. Not only does he build amps making him a rockstar in my book he wouldnt join the host on calling labling people all willy nilly. He shut that shit down
Dave Friedman is the Great White Hope of amp manufacturing. Marshall sold out, Mesa Mark VII sucks, Krank went under, Fender is cool, but not high gain. So, basically it's Engl or Friedman. I just got my Friedman JEL 20 from Sweetwater this week and it's EPIC!!! 🤘😉💯👍🎸🙂
If you can get your hands on an Omega, they're top notch.
Dave absolutely right about tone with less gain being huge sounding. Basically for recording use as little gain as possible but live have the gain to help you out.
If Jake E Lee wanted publicity, he wouldn't have basically vanished for like 20 years.
Hahaha right?? I should get em on
My dream amp…..any Friedman.
Your best show ever!!
Ayyyy thanks!!
Brian May was using wet-dry-wet in the mid 70's so that was way before Eddie.
EXCELLENT.
Thanks!!
Dave is the Carrol Shelby of guitar amplification.
Carrol Shelby line of guitars, The Boss, The Cobra, yeah I can dig it bruh 😎.
More technically Ed's Rose Palace plexi was a 220 volt AC import from England. In the United States it needed a variable transformer in order for it to work off our 110v AC. So the Variac was probably sold with the Marshall for that purpose. But Ed liked to d!ck around with his gear and on a whim set the Variac to 140v AC which is not "cranking up the voltage" as Ed once claimed in an interview but instead sets the operating AC at a lower (than 220) voltage which caused it to "brown out" and sound pleasing. So if you really want the brown sound, just buy a 100w non master volume plexi (with a UK 220 transformer) and a Variac and set it at 140 volts then add the 6 band eq in front, 2 10 bands for dual echoplexes, and the obligatory phase 90 and flanger and you're all set. Whatever guitars and pickups you're using won't matter for 💩 because Ed was always changing out guitars and pickups and he still sounded the same
I have a BE Deluxe, so I'm a fan, gotta say though that the part about not being able to tweak gain in a modeler with knobs depends on the modeler. Axe FX you can map the knobs to anything: gain, bass, treble, mids, presence, even effects, plus you have a footswitch to toggle scenes/channels/effects/presets, or anything you want, so I don't agree with that argument at all. Maybe the QC sucks at that, I don't know...
I think he means it doesn’t translate to the amp very well. Which is true. I had a Kemper and turning the gain does not do the same thing as turning the gain on my real BE 100 Deluxe.
@@cardbored_seems very, very close on the Axe FX for what it's worth, but I'll take your word for it on the Kemper.
Wolfgang definitely told Cory Wong that his father would dime amps and leave them on for days in end to test
Mike Landau was the first wet/dry/wet player
Bradshaw says Ed was first he had it for the 5150 tour.
@@jaycareaga9929 Wrong
Brian May was using wet-dry-wet in '75. That's years before Bob was even in the rack business - so it was neither Mike or Eddie. @@chriskrueger1865
Ah you guys just don’t know about guitar effects . Whoever was first person to use an effects board/ pedal and turn it off and on in was the first person . Playing wet dry has been around as long as there’s been effects .
That's not what wet/dry/wet is, mate. And turning an effect on and of isn't wet/dry. Understand what it is first before telling someone they don't know something. @@humanactivated1017
Mutt Lange FTW.
I’ve played through most amps made by this point and once you get to the JCM 900 the tone is compromised by the gain . The JCM 800 has the brownest Marshall sound by far . Same with most makes . Gain kills the tone , gain also kills the dynamics . High Gain is really for the weak player .
Jeremy this was so much fun and very informative! I’m not a musician but it was interesting to hear you ask him how an amp truly works. Listened to the entire show… Dave seems a little pompous, rather conceited, which sort of shocked me! Wouldn’t expect that from a tech geek like Mr Friedman cause he’s not the “star” but simply makes the gear. Your energy completely stumps his and of course you’ve interviewed the biggest names in music so I’m sure his attitude didn’t phase you. Great chat! Cheers - R
Ohhh no!! I didn’t get that vibe at all from Dave, he was oh so kind and very generous with his time and I appreciated having the opportunity to talk to him 🤟🏻
What you read is actually Dave Friedman's confidence in being a bonafide world-class expert in guitar amplification. It could come off as pompous or conceited, but be assured there are just a handful of humans on this planet with his amount of complete and total mastery of their industry and craft.
If you were a player or related to the industry, you'd know DF as being one of the most humble dudes at the top of that heap. A lot of us have emailed him dumb (noob) questions, and somehow, he makes the time to answer EVERY email. Having dealt with Dave personally, I can attest to him being a very thoughtful, yet uber-busy professional.
I take it Jeremy is not much of a guitar player. Some of these questions are so elementary and his reaction to some of the answers kinda exposes him. Dave did a great job answering though 👍🏼
Lol really? The point of some of those questions was for people that are casual listeners and music fans to understand how an amp works… I’m a fine guitar player thanks 🤣
@@JeremyWhiteShowyeah, really!! And you’re welcome 😉
I don’t feel that way at all. I actually think he’s one of the more knowledgeable broadcasters out there as far as gear. Sometimes he is asking in a way to allow less knowledgeable listeners/viewers understand though.
@@edwardskol1812I don’t listen to him so I don’t know his audience but he did mention some gear he had and his reaction to some of the answers to basic questions was telling. I just came to listen to Dave be punished with eye rolling questions. All is good 👍🏼
He’s asking those questions for those who don’t know he made that pretty clear.
Move in with Daddy Dave and let him explore your brown eye.
🫣
How great would it be if they made a tight lose nob ?

Boomers gonna boom
Sounds like a guy sitting on a rare supply of guitar tone wood and needs some money.
Seriously. Guitar material makes zero impact on tone of electric guitars
Eddy Van Helen's test is as pointless as his songs. Keyboards and drums playing like it's missing the rest of the band. Singer singing a song which is different to what the keyboard and drums are doing. Then out of nowhere a guitar solo.
