I still use my phone for an alarm but I have a rule that it isn't allowed in the bedroom so in the evening I plug it in to the place in the living room that I have dedicated to electronics and just put the alarm on loud. This gives the added benefit of getting immediately out of bed.
I've turned notifications completely off except from apps like messages, calls, and gratitude reminders. This has significantly decreased the time I spend on my phone!

Yeah same here, it's hard because the UA-cam recommendations are scary good. So even if you want to watch 1 video that might help you it's easy to go on a loop of video watching for hours

I swear to god; making the phone black and white seriously makes a huge difference; all the sudden you find yourself unlocking it & then remembering that there is nothing to do here. So then closing it back up & keeping on going along with your day.. this seems to be life-changing. Let's hope this effect doesn't wear off. I have already found myself wanting to turn the effect off, because "I would want to see this in color"; but once you realize that that urge is exactly what you are trying to fight against it actually seems a little scary..
The gray scale thing is so funky. I thought it was ridiculous at first but it's been a really great thing for keeping me off my phone when everything looks boring.
This is really cool, as a computer science major I wrote a short essay about digital well being and our negative relationship with technology. I found some research that actually shows that phones reduce our attention spans, so we can't really concentrate on one task as easily and engage in deep learning. We also read differently than we used to, in more of an "F" pattern where we scan for useful information in reading instead of losing ourselves in the material.

Watching this because I have a 12 pro max on its way since my phone broke, I only upgrade my phone when I have to but I like to get the model I want because I'll have it for at least 2 years, this model is way too exciting for me so I'm trying to prepare myself! I love the idea of setting up your first page for your morning and evening routines!
I delete the apps off my phone before bed, and then re-download, delete mid-day. That's become like its own addiction, as well as placing the apps in different folders, changing the order of the screens, etc. Because although I "should" have self-control, like you said, it's practically muscle memory to just go to my phone, swipe over, open app. It's 100% an addiction!
Good tips. I'm currently doing 40 days without my phone until easter. At the beginning, it was difficult to organize myself when I wanted to meet up with friends (writing emails with the computer was the solution - as it is not that natural to us than WhatsApp, you use it only for the really necessary parts of the conversation) and also when I was heading for an unknown place (figuring it out before going and/or asking real people on the street than google maps). But it really helped me to see that I don't need a phone for my daily life: in the first week, there was this urge to be connected, to be looking at the phone screen just to see if I've got any messages or notifications. This urge has completely disappeared. It makes me conscious of how I'm spending my time and that I want to spend it doing things where I see more meaning to it
You are absolutely right. It has become muscle memory. Putting apps that are neccessary and not distracting on my homepage is a great idea. I'm going to set mine up rn.
Great Video about 3 weeks ago I realized I was spending way too much time on my phone I valued it more than anything else. I deleted all social media and any distraction app such as news apps. I believe firmly in intentional living now a days. 🙏 thank you
I see the need for constant contact with my phones as a type of addiction that requires my detox SNS. If I spend too much time on my phone, obsessively checking the internet, social media, mail, or messages, it makes my feel bad…these things kind of message releases dopamine into my brains, making me feel not bad, and want more…. Something that i'm thinking about trying is getting a keypad phone to carry with me during the day , then use a tablet for apps when i have time at home. Also having a real digital camera with me if i go somewhere I want to take pictures.
i set the Night Light intensity to it's lowest but always have it on. it makes a nice subtle warmth to pictures, making them look better more often than not.

I am spending a lot less time on social media. I am concentrating on meditation and everything else but my phone! Thanks for telling us!! 🙂👍
For IPhone users who want to change their screen to grayscale: In iOS 10, go to Settings > General > Accessibility >Display Accommodations >Color Filters. Switch Color Filters on and select Grayscale. To easily toggle between color and grayscale, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Color Filters.
Yeah! Very nice solution but what I do is in my phone (samsung) Full day I've "on" the dark mode. And also I use dim or non stimulated theme so, it really help me from damaging my eye from bright screen. I use bedtime setting which available in my phone I set from10 pm to 5am it turn my phone into black and white mode and "on" the "don't disturb" mode(as you mentioned in your video). And there is one more setting my phone called "eye comfort shield" I've set the timer of this setting from 7 pm to 7am as we all know bright light is big lead cause to damage our eye and it named as light pollution. Apart from this I use and install only those apps which very helpful as a degree student I'm very super conscious about the apps what I'm using.. and puts the apps in folder with respect categories so it creates less distraction. So these is the way I use to keep myself less distract and healthy physically and mentally. Hope this idea will help someone 🙏🏻😊
To turn grayscale on iphone 1- go to settings 2- go to general 3- go to Accessibility 4- go to display Accommodations 5- click on color filters turn the toggle on , automatically it is going to got to grayscale mode but if it didn’t their are choices available down where you can pick ( they become available only when you turn the toggle switch on )
I've taken social media, UA-cam, Netflix, etc, off my phone and blocked them in the browser. At this point I've got my meditation timer app (Insight Timer ftw), navigation apps, rideshare apps, audio and podcast apps, Instapaper, and Kindle. I could and probably should take some more stuff off, but taking social media and video apps off was very helpful.
I turned off notifications for all my social media accounts, and deleted the Facebook app off my phone so I now need to go through internet browser to access it. Definitely helps!
I am an iPhone user and I should recognize it’s the first time an android phone looked visually appealing to me by the way you arranged those apps on your screen 👏thank you for the video, I’ve used before greyscale on my phone and it’s definitely life changing when you want to get some proper work done, most probably I should apply it more often
Thank you for this, i seriously need to set a limit on my social media usage, it’s making my creativity dwindle and this helps me a lot, and ! Also it’s great that the things you say is readily available
A tool that I use a lot and it's really useful and rewarding is an app called 'Forest' you set the time that you want to be WITHOUT your phone, and in the meanwhile the app let a digital tree grow up, if you use your phone the tree dies so I think its a really cute way to get you away from your phone, and also if you plant enough of those trees you can plant a real tree in Africa, look it up, it's amazing, i've been using it for the last month and it really helps out
I've loved this series and hope to see more down the road. I've been drastically limiting my social media usage for months and it's been an incredibly beneficial experience. I wasn't aware of the greyscale feature of my phone and I'll be leaving that on permanently so keep me from using my phone. I hate how easy it is to lose hours at a time doing nothing of any value and I've been looking for ways to be more productive. This is great!
Deleted all my social media apps from my phone, set timers using the "screen time" feature built into iPhone, and downloaded the Freedom app (which blocks time waster websites on the safari app for whatever time frame you set it to). When I'm on my computer (which is where a decent amount of my UA-cam time wasting happens), I use the Cold Turkey App that I recently downloaded (which does the same thing as the Freedom app on my phone, but it's completely permanent for the time frame (so once you set the timer for an allotted time, you can't get around it until it's over). I might try rearranging the order of apps on my phone as well...that's a good idea.
Turn off the notification of particular app which distract you the most and then you will see the difference I am trying this from a long time and it really works yaa, it really does!
I'd also recommend to control all of the notifications that comes to your phone. I turned off all the sounds, badges, messages on lock screen and banners from social media apps. So now it's me to decide when I want to chat, when I want to be lazy and entertain myself. Also I’d recommend to turn off ALL the notifications that you don’t ever need. By doing so you kill all the distractions that your phone can bring to you. Most of the time I found myself picking up my smartphone every time I get message or any other unnecessary notification from the app I rarely use. So if you also raise your phone way more often than you want to, try to manage your notifications
I have done it before. It doesnt worked out, because of my lack of dicipline. I tend to turn off the grayscale option when its on. I change the wind down setting for instagram, as soon as the digital wellbeing said it's time off. Ah, all I need is consistency. Anyway, your video was very helpful. Keep rockin, bro!
I'm also using Pixel 3 and I find the digital wellbeing feature as a must have especially if you're spending too much time on social media. 'Flip to Shhh' is also hands down the best feature, where you place your pixel 3 face down and it automatically activates Do Not Disturb
Great stuff. I actually talked about social media and phone usage in one of my public speaking classes. Think it is a huge issue in our society right how much time we spend with our phones and the kind of mindset many people (especially teens) have with their social media. I liked this video a lot. I won’t be doing “Do Not Disturb” though. My girlfriend is about to be living 4 hours away. Ouch for me
I find the HelpMe Focus App very useful in being less distracted when working. It blocks certain apps that you identified as a distraction in a selected timespan. Thanks to this app i am so much more productive
Thanks for this Nathan! I’ve done the dividing the apps to different pages but now I really assign per page to a department like for filmmaking and for personal. More specific. I think this will be really helpful. I also turn off most of my notifications to avoid distractions (esp. if i forget to click the do not disturb) and only turn on calls, texts and emails. :)
Great points! All of my social media apps are stored in a folder in my apps screen. This folder is labeled "Distractions" so every time I open the folder it triggers my brain to remember that these are distracting. Also, UA-cam has a notification thing that you can set to take a break. I have it set for an hour and a half and I try not to hit that notification at all during the day. Hope these extra tricks help someone else!
I log out of all social media and have turned off the “remember me “ option. So each time I subconsciously pull up Instagram or fb I’ve to enter the info and for me that serves as reminder for if I really need to get on it or not. Not full proof but works most of the times
I don't have any social media apps or games on my phone if your bored READ A BOOK if you have nothing to do. I used to absolutely hate reading now i love it I check out a new book at school every week and I finish the book in a week and then check out another one
I've been waiting for this video! and i loved it, i have set up my phone in sameway almost but i need to find a way of stop using UA-cam because i watch videos for hours You should try todoist as your to list app and i gaurantee you are going to love it :D
That's it! Goodbye, UA-cam! I gotta stop wasting life's most valuable resource, time. I deleted so many time trap apps and reorganized my home page. Also, I gotta say, your music choice is very pristine. Ever since I saw your cold showers video, I've gotten hooked on French music. Thank you for the inspiration!
Nice vid. I've never been a phone addict (many other forms of digital distraction yes, but not phone) I hate small screens and thumb typing. Nevertheless I turned off push notifications for most apps a while ago because they are crafted to abuse your psychology and draw you in even if you aren't that interested in the first place. It definitely helps. Your point about muscle memory is funny and true. I can think of multiple times where I've opened my phone to check something and literally snapped back into reality a minute later thinking "how did I end up on instagram?"
I have done the same thing with my desktop. I put everything which can distract me in a folder. Like my games. You shouldnt even see the icon of your games/distraction programs. Also when studying and lets say you really want to watch something on youtube, use incognito mode. That way the youtube algorithm resets and doesnt know your weak spots to steal your attention. Recommended videos will be easier to ignore that way.
Did I miss anything? What do you do to squash the distractions from your phone?
I had put some alarmes for stop me. For exemple i have the habit to go on my phone after lunch so i put an alarme for restrict my use at one hour.

This channel it's so underrated, it actually have helped me a lot, so, thanks! :-)
For IPhone users who want to change their screen to grayscale:
In iOS 10, go to Settings > General > Accessibility >Display Accommodations >Color Filters. Switch Color Filters on and select Grayscale. To easily toggle between color and grayscale, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Color Filters.
Yeah! Very nice solution but what I do is in my phone (samsung)
Full day I've "on" the dark mode.
I followed your advice and reduced my phone usage by half. Thank you so much for making this content, you've changed my life
One thing that is great about youtubers is that they are examples of the ideas they are sharing.
To turn grayscale on iphone
1- go to settings
2- go to general
3- go to Accessibility
4- go to display Accommodations
5- click on color filters turn the toggle on , automatically it is going to got to grayscale mode but if it didn’t their are choices available down where you can pick ( they become available only when you turn the toggle switch on )
I've taken social media, UA-cam, Netflix, etc, off my phone and blocked them in the browser. At this point I've got my meditation timer app (Insight Timer ftw), navigation apps, rideshare apps, audio and podcast apps, Instapaper, and Kindle. I could and probably should take some more stuff off, but taking social media and video apps off was very helpful.
I watch 3-4 hours of UA-cam everyday. Just found that out in Digital Wellbeing. Holy shit! Thanks for this video, man.
Thank you bro, your tricks really worked for me.
I turned off notifications for all my social media accounts, and deleted the Facebook app off my phone so I now need to go through internet browser to access it. Definitely helps!
Grayscale is a game changer! Thanks for the tip!
Same. First time for me as well that an android screen doesn’t look ugly
Thank you for this, i seriously need to set a limit on my social media usage, it’s making my creativity dwindle and this helps me a lot, and ! Also it’s great that the things you say is readily available
A tool that I use a lot and it's really useful and rewarding is an app called 'Forest' you set the time that you want to be WITHOUT your phone, and in the meanwhile the app let a digital tree grow up, if you use your phone the tree dies so I think its a really cute way to get you away from your phone, and also if you plant enough of those trees you can plant a real tree in Africa, look it up, it's amazing, i've been using it for the last month and it really helps out
Don’t stop. Ur content is very good.
only found this channel a few days but you're definitely one of my favourite youtubers
Thank you very much! Didn't even know the grey scale settings existed, they are really helping me... getting bored quickly!
I needed some motivation on this topic so I decided to rewatch this video and it's even better than the first time I watched it
Can't thank you enough for sharing these tips! Objective, helpful and thoughtful. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 😊
Turn off the notification of particular app which distract you the most and then you will see the difference I am trying this from a long time and it really works yaa, it really does!
thanks nathaniel. really happy with your channel.
You deserve more subscribers! I love your content man!
Best take away - greyscale the phone... Thanks buddy...
Found your channel a few days ago. Happy to see I'm not the only one on the same journey. Also, Philosophize This is a brilliant podcast :D
Even in grayscale, this video is nice.
Super helpful video! I immediately did all the steps and I love greyscale! Thank you
I'm also using Pixel 3 and I find the digital wellbeing feature as a must have especially if you're spending too much time on social media.
Ouch for me
Loving this series.
I'm so glad I found your channel and can't wait to see more.
Your channel is the perfect thing I was looking here.
All your videos are helpful for my own life style 😇
I find the HelpMe Focus App very useful in being less distracted when working. It blocks certain apps that you identified as a distraction in a selected timespan. Thanks to this app i am so much more productive
"Anything that's tracked, gets managed'. I'll remember that...
I keep my phone on Do Not Disturb constantly because I hate when my phone makes any sort of unsolicited noise.
I like this series especially episode01 was an instant change in my inbox. Thank you!
I just did the grayscale, I love it. Thank you so much.
Hey Nathaniel, just watched most of your videos. Great work man, I really like the topics and authenticity
I absolutely love Nathaniel's channel. Been here since 400k, and I'll be here to see him get that diamond play button for 10M subs🙏🏻
I really like your videos, looks like your putting so much effort in them! everything reminds me a lot of matt d‘evalla :) carry on like that ☀️
I've been waiting for this video! and i loved it, i have set up my phone in sameway almost but i need to find a way of stop using UA-cam because i watch videos for hours
You should try todoist as your to list app and i gaurantee you are going to love it :D
I will check it out for sure, thanks for the suggestion!
I’m 12 and still trying to find my way but using this video helps a lot because I see more of what’s around me thank you for that😇
Awesome video, thank you for the tips, greyscale works like a charm
Yesssss thank you for the pointers on grayscale and less blue light! I didn’t even know my phone could do that! I did both on my iPhone.
Favorite video in Digital Miniminalism yet :)
Awesome!! Glad you liked it. I think this one is my favorite too.
Nathaniel, you always motivate me to start doing things. Thank you!
