But God damn, how can you not relate to the guy, who was the perpetual underdog, denied at every chance and passed at every opportunity, yet still managed to realize his dream, despite the fact that it seemed like the whole world was against him at times. You are an inspiration. Nothing but respect, man ✊

    • @Tetratronic

Because dudes like Belal forget that being in the UFC, they are an entertainer first, and fighter second. Even if you could resurrect Bruce Lee, unless he has a good personality, that fans can react to and buy tickets, then you're kinda useless to the company, even if you are a godlike fighter (which Belal isn't). The UFC is in the business of selling tickets and PPVs. Fights are of secondary importance. Just look at Jones vs Aspinall. So with that being said, Belal is just a boring person. He's content with fighting to a decision, which fans hate.
Something he doesn't want to acknowledge. And his Muslim gimmicks are just cringy.

I do partially agree with you on the entertainment factor and that it plays a role in how quickly you get to a title shot. But I just find it inspirational to have that level of determination to not get discouraged and not give up on your goal and just keep grinding, until you become what Max Holloway has called 'undeniable'. And then - what's even more important - use that frustration as fuel to put on a performance like he did in Manchester. I couldn't help but feel impressed. That's all.

Shout out to Belal, his story was super inspiring. From starting late in martial arts at 23 years old while going to school to be a lawyer, finding his old hs wrestling coach on fb who was fighting in the PFL, linking back up and training with him, its just one of those unexpected unlikely but beautiful paths that really make you happy and proud to see him become a world champion, props bro. Even hearing his trainer lewis taylor winning 1m from that underdog fight in 30 seconds by knock out is crazy as hell and just as inspiring, especially after hearing him kinda get shorted by being denied by the UFC just for being 41. It just sucks so many people didn't want bro to even get the title fight in the first place, even after showing his range and how dynamic a fighter he is with his previous fights people still hate and are slow to come around to give props where due but I bet it makes his world title win that much sweeter now.
Belals story is a inspiration to everyone I think because it shows whatever your doing in life its usually not to late to try or get started, you just never know until you do. Seeing him almost stumble into the UFC was kinda crazy the way it worked out for him after finding his old HS wrestling coach to train with, putting in the work and grinding all while still being on the path to become a lawyer. Makes me wish UFC was around back in HS, I loved wrestling but it was a battle deciding on whether or not to keep pursuing it freshman year over football, even with a couple buddies trying to drag me back in pre season. Back then wrestling just felt like a dead end road long term wise unless you had olympic goals, now days young guys that are serious about martial arts in general can consider it a good foundation if they want to pursue mma in the future. For most schools and for most kids for that matter, wrestlings probably the only way to get your foot in the door to any real martial arts and it teaches you allot of lessons both personal and in combat so its cool to see that was Belal’s start.
Glad you all were able to touch on how serious and scary head and eye injuries can be both for mma, fighting, and in general for that matter. K.Os are super scary in that you may not notice right away the damage in your brain or if you have a concussion but can be setting yourself up for permanent brain damage if you go right back into a fight and especially don't get it checked out. I remember previous episodes of Joe talking about how serious the UFC began taking it and new treatment tech like concentrated magnetic stimulation therapy etc. Even with new treatments the mind is nothing to play with, and while I 100% get the fighter mentality when it comes to dusting yourself off and getting to the next fight, it sucks so many fighters don't take it serious enough to really take the time and therapy after a head injury before getting back in the octagon. On one hand can you blame them? When its how you've achieved your glory, fed your family, your source of pride, you can know the risks and still be willing to roll the dice on your future. I think its easier if your a person that considers yourself an intellectual or you have intellectual pursuits, because you know deep down its your most valuable most potent weapon and should be your most cherished asset, you gotta do the best you can to protect it. When you see former champions bound to wheelchairs or living out the rest of their lives as a 10% shadow of their former selves it should motivate you to go get that therapy if you've taken a bad head shot or K.O. but unfortunately thats not always the case.
Definitely agree with the touching on cardio, I say all the time so many guys completely overlook it. Even Im guilty of it at times just in life in general, although I used to be a avid runner and find it enjoyable. I think the thing about cardio is if you're dominant enough a fighter in your weight class or fighting style you can get by without it at least until you meet your match.. Like Joe and Belal both touched on every fighter has experienced it at some point and dreads that feeling of having nothing left in the tank, its a helpless feeling you only need to feel once before you take serious the importance of it, but again I think many do get by until that time they don't.. I actually had no Idea about plyometrics training and how effective it was, actually pretty interested now as a general workout. I don't doubt its advantage one bit and I can bet at the very least its giving guys that adopt it a edge especially on those super even match ups you have to go the distance, thats gonna likely be your edge to pull it out in those situations and youl be glad for the training.
Lastly I think it was cool you all touched on sort of the philosophy of fighters but especially elite level champion fighters in terms of drive, glory, legacy, physiological effects of winning and losing etc. Personally I think for most people its easier to get a L out the way sooner than later, and thats not just fighting but in life in general tbh. Noone wants to lose at all but psychologically although its going to affect you regardless when you've been on a win streak and get used to the love that comes with winning and now have to face the shame of losing, but if your previously undefeated or a first time title holder Im sure it can be a entire different level of mental pain not everyones used to overcoming. I think its healthy to know that pain and turn it into hard work and keep you humble for your coming wins. . When it comes to glory & legacy as driving factors, they are by far the most potent imo, the reason as men we risk our lives, spend all day training for something, refuse to quit, refuse to tap even at the expense of broken bones etc. etc. They can be amazing motivators, but like anything I think part of life is knowing how to keep them in check, when they should become less important than the truly important things in your life like coming home to your family or living a normal life for the remainder of your years etc. and is why some guys unfortunately don't know when to hang it up or take a step back. Thats why I think the healthiest thing to fight for is love.. , I always say you cant truly be a lover without being a fighter because you have to defend it to keep it at some point.. If your fighting because you love the sport, love your family that you want to provide for, love your coaches, mentors, that you don't want to let down etc. then I think you'll know when enough is enough later in your career if and when the stakes are no longer worth the potential payoff or damage, but if all you love is glory, legacy, fame etc. I think thats when things can get dangerous, theres a lesson any and everyone can apply to their path in life in there..

He changed to a more conservative fighting style after the Luque ko. It made him a less exciting fighter to watch even if you enjoy grappling.
I still watch him and I think even if you find his style boring you have to take your hat off for someone who has won 11 or 12 straight; whatever he’s at now; and has achieved the title by beating another guy who hasn’t lost in years.

Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ (Arabic: بِلَال بِن رَبَاح) (5 March 580 - 2 March 640) was one of the Sahabah (companions) of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was born in Mecca and is considered to have been the first mu'azzin in history, chosen by Muhammad himself.[1][4][5][6] He was a former slave and was known for his voice with which he called people to their prayers. He died in 640, around the age of 60.
