Head Control: Exercises for a Child with Cerebral Palsy

- Meet Sebastian. He is a young boy with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. His family wants to help me share treatment suggestions to help children like him across the world. My clinic, Child and Family Development, in Charlotte, NC, allowed me to use their facilities and their equipment to showcase Sebastian's skill and charming personality. We review techniques to reduce stiffness, encourage strength and control. I think you'll love spending time with him. Thank you to this family and my clinic for allowing this to happen.
I also have available 3 children's educational books, "A is for Autism," "D is for Down Syndrome," and "C is for Cerebral Palsy" available on Amazon. I have forthcoming "Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises for the Hips". If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me at amysturkey@gmail.com. Please note: I am unable to provide treatment suggestions for a child I have not personally evaluated.
i am a sitter of a CP kid and im happy snd thankful i found this video its a big help for me
Jennifer Escaño That makes me happy!
So happy for him , it seems he has a great therapist love the video and all the recommendations!!
He is a joy to work with
This woman is awesome! I am so grateful for all her help. My little one had low muscle tone but with yhe burocracy in medical system it took months to get help and I knew the time was precious. Found this one by pure luck and used all the techniques she showed. Loved it as I did not need any special equipment- just what we already had, i.e toys and furniture. Now she is happily toddling around. Who knows which development stage would she be now if it was not the help from Amy. Thank you so so much. Good luck with your chanel to help more families that need you!🤱👨👩👧👧
You are so kind to take the time to let me know. Your comments brought tears to eyes. Thank you.
I know your comment was 2 years ago, how is your little one doing now? I noticed your comment because of your name. My daughter's name is Lilia as well and our last name begins with M also. Same spelling and everything!! I've only ever met one other girl with the same name but spelled Lyliah.
Thank you so much for sharing the above mam . Please do share videos on hand control for kids down with cerebral palsy as well. Thank you so much
You are very kind woman of the world😂😢😢😢😢love from Pakistan
Thanks a lot. We are waiting for more instructional videos like this one on Quadriplegic CP. And your explanations are also big help. Thank you. 👍👍

Thank you for spreading knowledge and experience
N K You are so welcome.
N K Yes, when a person has extensor tone I do try to break up that tone by bending at the hip or bending of the knee or bending at the foot. If you Externally rotate the legs in criss cross sit, it often helps to break up the tone/ stffness
Thank you for sharing this amazing video. 💌I can do more for my daughter.
God's blessings.

What an adorable boy 🥰❤️
He was so beautiful and fun. I miss him.
My son used to stiff his legs when we put him on stand or walking.. This also leave legs scissoring while walking...waiting for you to upload something related to it
Apart from this I only follow you from last 1 year and get noticable improvement in my son... He can now sit, stand by himself holding furniture, walk assisted using afo.. Thanks a ton for everything
Your comments made me so happy. It sounds like your son has done really well. Have you tried whole body vibration. I did do a video on that in my low tone series. Whole body vibration decreases stiffness in legs. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/dF8l0eZ7JMQ/v-deo.html
Sorry I did not see your message. I am sure the vibration platforms are available. Weight bearing thru the legs in a stander or otherwise, vibration, strengthening and stretching work all help with stiffness. Some clients get tone reduction with warm baths. The vibration should help levels of stiffness in the ankles and the hips. So I have seen it help scissoring. Try stretching the adductors before walking and see if that helps.
I recommend you find a local PT to help you.
Ty, that's what my granddaughter has and she's making great progress with her PT, but her neck and head need work. She's almost 3 and is about to get her first gate walker we hope before her and her twin sister's birthday in June. They were 28 weeks. her sister is twin a and has Idk how to put it but let's just say she's up there on the autism spectrum and she is nonverbal. The 2 disabilities are extremely difficult to manage and sometimes I'm at a loss for what to do. However this helps with daily work on Olivia's neck control. ty
T.S. MacLeod I am so glad this was helpful for you and your grandkids. I have recently had twins with that combination. I know the parents are very appreciative of your help

Thank you❤️❤️
You are so welcome.
My son has this extensor tone thrust. None of the physicians or therapist have mentioned this or suggested to us how to work on it or break it up. I learn more online than in clinic. Very disappointing but thank you for explaining in this video.
I try to give verbal ques as well. I wish we had people in our life that were actually of help.
I think it is important to find therapists and doctors who are affirming and helpful. Sometimes reaching out to support groups locally can give you recommendations for local therapists and doctors that they recommend. I think that some therapists and doctors may not have the experience or knowledge to recommend things like this. I hope you find this playlist helpful for you. I am wishing you the best.
@@pediatricPTexercises Thank you! Thank you so much for replying and sharing. I have been to 3 children’s hospitals searching for doctors but still a hard search. I will try to look for local groups. I am apart of some groups but I live in a rural area and haven’t found parents or children like mine (in our immediate area). Thank you for your kind suggestions and play list. Many blessings.

Hi there, I am a new graduate of a physical therapist assistant program. And I am currently about to start my first pediatric job in the home health setting. I love all of your videos and I can’t give you enough credit for letting me follow the hard work you’ve put in for others to be able to treat patients to a higher standard. I do have one question, I understand what you’re doing with these patients, but I don’t quite understand how to document what I’m doing for the patient. Is there any resources you can point me to that could potentially help me understand the reasoning behind the documentation for the insurance to not kick it back?
Sorry I am just finding your comment. In documentation you need to document what you did, how the client performed the activity, and what you did as a therapist that required therapy level intervention. Your detail needs to be enough that you remember what you did the next session but also enough detail that if another therapist read your note and had to see the client for you that they would know what you did. Hope that helps.
@@pediatricPTexercises yes. Very helpful. Thank you. Keep up your amazing work!!

Im learning a lot qbout cerebral palsy
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm working on 2 boys like him for about a month. What is your view about compression therapy for athetoid CP?
I am not opposed to anything that you try that is well tolerated and works for the child. I have not tried compression therapy for athetosis. Here is my playlist for this cutie. I miss him

what do you think about using cervical collar for this kind of situation
I have certainly used a neck support in this type of client. This family hates orthotics of any kind. So no neck support for him

I had aquired mild cerebral palsy since 1 day old due to 2 strokes I had I was a home birth and was taken amiltary hospital and was treart there
I bet these are very interesting for you to watch then.
Hi. Nice to meet you.
my 2 month old baby had a brain haemorrhage, this is his 3rd day in NICU and it's still going on to this day. the doctor said that it was likely that he would have cerebral palsy. Can I do this movement after 3 days he has a seizure when he has a fever? I want to do the best for my baby as early as possible so that my baby can be healthy as usual.
Hi! It is nice to meet you as well. I am so happy that you have found my channel. The things you do when he is young is the most effective in helping him be the very best he can be. I love your dedication. Unfortunately, your child’s medical history sounds fairly complex. It is unethical for me to provide treatment recommendations for a child I did not personally evaluate. I recommend you find a local pediatric physical therapist who can help you. Check around to find out who other people recommend. A good therapist is essential.
How , he takes shower please🤗, my son looks AT him and i have a problem in this thing
He had a shower chair that held him safely in the tub I believe
Thank you for your wonderful explanation. I have a child like Sebastian who is two years old, but he always cries, not like Sebastian. Pleases answer me honestly if l do active exercises just like you my son can stand or walk . I lost the hope😢
I cannot give predictions for a child that I have not personally evaluated. I do know that every child that I have worked with has gotten better. Here is Sebastian’s playlist. I hope it helps you

Hi, thank you to your amazing exerseise l woud like to ask you about the head circumference of the child with cerebral plasy can growth? Becouse the doctor said this kind of children head not growth
Please answer me if you can ❤
It is not uncommon for a child with cerebral palsy to also have a smaller head size. How much a child head will grow will depend on the child
My daughter also is like that this August 2022 she will have 3 year i have on one to help me on her

I am sorry but I have no experience treating clients with SSPE. I had to look it up on Google just to know what it is. I think you would do better to consult with other clinicians more experienced with this condition.
Hi, I’m hoping you can assist me with some suggestions for therapy for my 9 month old!
I am sorry but it is considered unethical for me to provide treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated. I recommend you find a local pediatric physical therapist who can help you provide a customize program for your child.
Would u pls take video for cerebral palsy child in 6th month age??

If one of my standing videos does not assist you directly, I would recommend you find a local pediatric physical therapist to assist you. I wish you the very best.
Hi Amy, thank you and little Sebastian for the video. Its very informative. I'm a cp mom from South Africa, when you try to break up extension, do you think its possible that the crossing of the knees could be painful for some children considering the tightness of their knees and hips?
Every child is different. I often find once children have their adolescent growth spurts that it becomes painful for them to sit with legs criss crossed. The integrity of the hip socket would affect the comfort as well at a younger age
Hi Amy, my name is savanna, I have just subscribed to your channel, I think you are an amazing physical therapist, you do very well, have some questions for you, when it comes to you doing physical therapy with your special needs kiddos.
