Jeff Scott Soto is probably one of the most underrated Hard Rock/Metal singers ever....implicitly one of the most modest ones out there. Respect to Soto.
I wholeheartedly agree. A friend took me to a concert of his and I did not even know who he was. I was watching the show in a small venue and next to the dressing room. My friend was holding a camera and signaled for someone beside me to lower himself. I was a bit puzzled. And there he was, Jeff Scott Soto the giant, with his arm around my shoulder and smiling wide to the camera. I had no idea who he was, but we chatted a bit and he was extremely kind and humble. Later on my friend explained that it was Jeff Scott Soto himself. So I waited for him after after the main act, Mr. Big. When Soto took the stage I was completely blown away. I immediately became a HUGE fan. The I found out how underrated this man is. Unbelievable.
He's a hell of a guy. Jeff admits he left behind his Rising Force-era tenor range years ago (before he joined Journey), and though he needs to massively rest his voice and take care of it singing higher ranges I think he's such a pro. This song's vocal was a ball-buster for anybody including him.
This song was written with a haunting medieval Middle Eastern feel. Ritchie pulled it off with one of the best bends, awesome vibratos with his fingers and flanger, wicked arpeggios, mutes and it all added to the haunting feel. And to think that he composed it. Nothing against Malmsteen but Blackmore is a genius. Very inspired composition.
It's damn near impossible to sing anything originally done by Dio and do it any justice. But if anyone ever gave it a helluva shot, it was Jeff Scott Soto on this track.
Nothing can compare to DIO his writing and voice, but I think you should see this as it is, a tribute, a dedication to the best. And when so many great artists decide to do a tribute, they will guide the people who didn't know DIO towards his music. And that is why, I think, this albus is a succes.
this is one of the most hardest cover i have ever heard, they did a really great job and justice, hell i would even say this is as unique and the same level as Dio's.
Everybody have the right to do covers of their heroes..even Yngwie! And i think this version is really good..nothing can beat the original as always, but i really like this one..and i think yngwie does a really good job...especially on the slower part of of the solo..awsome!
It's great that Yngwie and Jeff Scott Soto pay tribute to Ronnie James Dio. This is a sacred and legendary arrangement that impacted us and them. Thank you and RIP Ronnie James Dio...........
People... how is possible that all the haters of Malmsteen landed on this video? He is very talented and very skilled guitar player and I like the way he improvises cuz he goes for the last bit of time possible he have to make desired effect and people say it is wankery. How is possible that those wankers land up on video like that? To destroy everything prettier like they are? They made it happen. It went viral. I hear kids sayin that this sucks. So they'll all go soft and pop and Bruno Marsish and what are other softies called I dont know! Invest your time in something else! Dont destroy something that inspires people all around the world since 70' . You haters are probably in love with lady gaga and all electronic autotune crap and u guys like radiohead and coldplay to the max. Leave this alone and go to your happy place. Salute to the people who feels the zone of improvisation the right way! Fkin heavy metal brah, fkin heavy metal!
Malmsteen IS talented, gifted even. However, I always get the feeling it is more about showcasing his skill and less about the music. Brilliant execution this one, as expected.
matija buh so you shit on the idea of having electronic music (as in, machines creating the music instead of people), and yet you want technical mastery?? A machine will blow any human being out of the water, including malmsteen. But no machine can play with emotion like a human. THAT, in my humble opinion, is the true spirit of music. Not trying to play as many notes as you can, but making every single note, no matter how few, count and convey the emotions you are trying to convey.
one of the most magnificent & powerful solos of the earth . Ritchie described this solo to be one of his most inspiring moments on studio ; Malmsteen then came and took it to another level
Incredible solo, amazing intro... Very nice overall And honestly, we're in 2012. Are people still arguing about Malmsteen? He does what he does: he shreds. And when it comes to neoclassical shredding, he's on the top tier. If you click on a youtube video with "Malmsteen" anywhere on the title, you'd better know that''s gonna be some serious, melodic shredding involved. So why bother clicking on it, listening to it and then going "waaaaaaa he shredded the song I HATE IT"?
there is no argument there, vai and satriani made more than one g3 with him, its obvious he is one of the greatest, you can argue about styles but he is one of those...
although i like bot Blackmore and Malmsteen, this version has more punch, aggressiveness, and the solo is well... guitar rape. respect for Blackmore and Dio to create such a masterpiece, and for Malmsteen to give it more balls
I've adored Malmsteen many years! And I don't care about all the haters in the world! They won't change my opinion that Yngwie is one of my favorite guitar player. This song is beautiful! And I think dio will be happy with this performance!
Really nice! I love this interpretation with the sitar intro and nylon string outro. Keeps the spirit of the song but also sprinkles in a lot of fun surprises.
Yngwie is my friend, we met before (he probably doesn't remember) nicest guy on earth. He gave me a CD. You are a good guy Yngwie ... and an awesome/outstanding artist \,,/
lol This is how Yngwie loves to play. He's doing it like this for years. Is it about showcasing? Of course it is, but that doesn't mean it isn't ALSO about the music. That's what entertainers, virtuoso's, soloists do......they showcase their skill in their chosen medium.
Malmsteen its a legend!!!!!!,amazing good guitar player and song writer.ronnie james dio "padavona" its the all metal Music god..lemmy its for hard metal but cult .Heavy metal its only one god "the man of the silver mountain R.J:D. dio its the king!!! heaven and hell!!!best song in the World!
+LEFA HOLMSTROM heaven and hell belongs to the kings of early metal Black Sabbath, another great guitarist to challenge yngwie, Tony Iommi. tony is one of the all time greats, clean, fast and creative.
And he was like 17 when he did that album. The guy is incredible. I just went and saw him about a month and a half ago. He played this in his set. He gets better the older he gets.
Great! I still think the Dio Holy Diver Live version is my fave, with Doug Aldrich, Simon Wright, Rudy Sarzo and Scott Warren. Doug's sound is fatter and somehow more excellent even if he's not as twiddly-twiddly fast as Yngwie. Released two years before this, you just know that Malmsteen saw it and said 'hey that Blackmore solo is actually pretty great.'
When was that? This cover is originally from his '96 album, called Inspiration. All songs are versions of songs that "inspired" him when he was young. This one here and In The Dead of Night are probably the greatest ones, but give it a shot... that's one of his best albums, despite none of the songs being his hehe.
Rising force album holding the strat in the flames changed my life. I was 11 years old when it came out and I got the tape. I was a drummer but this album inspired me to want to express myself on electric guitar with a Marshall plexi stack and strat. To this day I am still obsessed with the tone of the strat and MArshall plexi. Plexi is the glass on the front of the amp and all years plexi are handwred point to point unlike everything Marshall did after late 1973. I had a late 73 cause it is Malmsteens favorite year but I realized late 73 is not hardwired and sounds very different and lacked the magic of the creamy plexi. My 1967 Superlead with basket weave 4x12 like Eddie Van Halen used on the albums up until 1984. There is magic in this guitar rig.
Even after 30 years later, Yngwie still does not realize that sometimes, a shredder has to play slow, it gives stuff like this a more powerful atmosphere. Fast just ruins it. Some shredders like John Petrucci and Steve Vai have noticed this, and no offense to any Yngwie fans, is why they are ultimately better guitarists. I prefer Blackmore's(Rainbow's) version. Can't be beaten :D

BTW, Mr. Big may have been the "main act", but Jeff Scott Soto was the one who took the crowd over. :D
He's a hell of a guy. Jeff admits he left behind his Rising Force-era tenor range years ago (before he joined Journey), and though he needs to massively rest his voice and take care of it singing higher ranges I think he's such a pro. This song's vocal was a ball-buster for anybody including him.
Es Mats Leven
Agreed. He's like Dio Version 2.0
I know your comment is five years old, but he's in Sons of Apollo now
This track is one of Yngwie's finest moments - it never fails to get my blood boiling, in a good way.
This song was written with a haunting medieval Middle Eastern feel. Ritchie pulled it off with one of the best bends, awesome vibratos with his fingers and flanger, wicked arpeggios, mutes and it all added to the haunting feel. And to think that he composed it. But yngwie version is better dude👍
The song makes me wish I was back in the 1400 with a Knights Templar fighting the Crusades
@@ugurtansavas2334 Yngwie didn't write the song and he is a later generation guitar player so Ritchie did the far better job......dude.
blackmores gates of babylon aren't colorful like malmsteen.......dudeee
Jeff Scott Soto's voice is too awesome on this
Yngwie and Jeff Scott Soto are perfect for this cover.
Very powerful

Agreed.
Jesse Williams *cough cough* Rainbow in The Dark by Corey Taylor, Neon Knights by Anthrax *cough cough*
Rainbow in the Dark was butchered by Corey Taylor guy, idk what you're on.
Joey Belladonna singing Neon Knights was indeed great, his voice has matured so well!
rehehee

this is so brilliant. what vocals, and yngwie desyroyed it in a great way

The master of guitar never disappoints. I am sure Dio is pleased with the efforts made on this song. \\,,// \\,,//
Yngwie and Dio actually teamed up later on and covered Aerosmith's "Dream On", that should tell you something.
It's great that Yngwie and Jeff Scott Soto pay tribute to Ronnie James Dio. This is a sacred and legendary arrangement that impacted us and them. Thank you and RIP Ronnie James Dio...........
Gus C ...Yeah Brother...Sacred music...
Jeff Scott Soto RULES!
Yes he does, but I think this cover would've been better if Yngwie had Mark Boals sing instead. His voice is eerily similar to Dio's.

matija buh Perfect answer. My feelings exactly. He's motivated me as a guitar player for 20+ years.
His patterns are ... pfff

Que interessante ! Existem relatos dizendo o contrário. Que bom que Malmsteen amadureceu. Amo a música de Yngwie há quase 30 anos ! :)
Yngwie was freakin perfect to cover this song specifically!
for me this is the best cover from whole album ... jeff´s voice has always been very unique ... and yngwie did it his own way :)
Incredible solo, amazing intro... Very nice overall

Yeah 🤘🤘🤘 agreed👍
Arpeggio sweep at 415 is godly
the best thing about this song is the solo...its amazing.
Jeff Scott Soto...sang for Yngwie back in the mid 80's. He has tons of stuff on UA-cam well worth checking out.

The bass in this is SOOO hot. It just punches you in the face. HARD.
A song, arrangement (version), playing.. = 1st class!..
The outro is fuckin amazing dude ...
Best cover ever....long live Ronnie.
JSS YOU VOICE IS AMAZING !
Really nice! I love this interpretation with the sitar intro and nylon string outro. Keeps the spirit of the song but also sprinkles in a lot of fun surprises.
The sound of the guitar is amazing!!! Deep, heavy, powerful.... love it!
Inspiration si such a great tribute record, and features most of the 80's vocalist who worked with yngwie, which make it more unique.
Well, he's no Ritchie Blackmore, but Yngwie did a good job here. I like Yngwie much better when he isn't trying to play 5000 miles per hour.
gpgpgpgp1000 Blackmore couldn't hold a candle next to YJM's guitar playing.
gpgpgpgp1000 ...hmmm...
I think he managed to keep it just under 4900...
