  • On this Day in the Life I continue my Warships tour in Baltimore Harbor with the USS Torsk.
The Torsk (SS-423) is a Tench-class submarine built for the United States Navy during World War II. Armed with ten torpedo tubes, the Tench-class submarines were incremental developments of the highly-successful Gato-class submarines that formed the backbone of the US Navy's submarine force during the war. Torsk was laid down at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in June 1944, and was launched in September of that year. She was commissioned in December of that year.
In 1945, Torsk made two war patrols off Japan, sinking one cargo vessel and two coastal defense frigates. The latter of these, torpedoed on 14 August 1945, was the last enemy ship sunk by the United States Navy in World War II. Decommissioned in 1964, she served for another seven years as a training vessel for the Naval Reserve. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in December 1971 and turned over to the state of Maryland for use as a museum ship. She is now part of the historic fleet of Historic Ships in Baltimore.

She was decommissioned March 4, 1968 in the Charlestown Naval Shipyard in Boston, Mass. I know, I was there.

Enjoyed watching. You had it more to yourself than last time lol. I think being 6'4" tall I would have had a few knots on my head in that confined space. Thanks for sharing and take care.

Speaking to the difficulty of learning the piping, valves, pumps, propulsion, hydraulics, electricity, refrigeration, tanks, etc-- as a retired marine engineer and having to learn the systems, remember that the men who crewed these vessels had to learn and understand these systems on the fly. A mistake made underwater during wartime could only have one result and it’s usually not good.

When I first went aboard the uscgc Mariposa during my time in the Coast Guard, the first two months aboard were spent drawing out every pipe, line, fitting, system etc. onboard. I’d say sun life was similar to Coast Guard life in that they had a limited crew to perform a big task. Love being aboard these ships and imagining all that went into manning them. Big props to all who served (all puns intended)

Wow, thanks for taking us along on your tour of a submarine!!! Amazing piece of Military Equipment. Awfully close quarters. I once toured a Coast Guard Cutter and space sure is limited! Thank You for Your Service 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Very interesting and educational video! Thanks for the cool submarine tour! Some of us probably will never get a chance to see the inside of such a vessel, so this was such a treat, to see how life was like for these service men. Thanks so much for your time and contribution with our nation’s Coast Guard! 🇺🇸🛥⚓️🌊

Enjoyed this tour! Thank you! I bet you have interesting stories yourself. My buddy was in the Coast Guard in the late 80s, said they towed a ship but it broke in half and the walls were full of weed 😀 he said bales were floating everywhere! Best wishes!

Those 2 wheels are not for steering the boat. They control the diving planes. The helm is located in the front of the control room. On the bulkhead opposite the forward berthing compartments.

I went through the USS DRUM, I couldn't believe how cramped it was inside that sub, of course people were a lot shorter back then than they are today, good vid bro.

There's cool stuff in the conning tower attack center pressure cell; radar scopes, torpedo data computer, attack periscope, another chart table, engine telegraph indicator, depth gauge 👩‍🔧🇺🇲🛠️🇷🇺

Between sleeping top bunk to a torpedo, and sharing your breathing air with the diesel engines, I don't think submarine life would be for me!
