    The gingham dress would be worth that extra $25 in fixing the straps because honestly I could see you realistically wearing that more than you think. I think it can be dressed up but also dressed down more as a casual warm weather dress with like your doc sandals. It looked so good on you! Of all the dresses I’ve seen you try on, that’s one of my favorites from both an aesthetic and realistic wearing POV 🥰✨

    Tailoring IS sustainability. Paying the money to get something fixed/altered to make it perfect to be something you wear and take care of is what sustainability is all about. It looks gorgeous you should definitely invest!

      I would never tailor a dress i spend a lot of money in. There is loads of dresses in the market, if it needs to be tailored that is not my dress. Tailoring/Fixing through the years is very different to spending a lot of money on something that to start with is not perfect.

      Tailoring something you already have is very different than buying something new that doesnt work for you and making an additional investment in tailoring it.

      @@roxita7097 as someone who sews, it’s nearly impossible to have something made out of a woven material that is perfectly “your size.” Because our bodies are all different and wovens have no give. If you want something that fits you perfectly, you have to tailor it. Waiting for a unicorn item that fits like it was made for you is futile. Why not make something you love work for you?

    • @julietoconnor323
      @julietoconnor323 Рік тому +36

      @@jennyboston27 I agree that it’s different, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good idea. If you love a dress enough to spend $300 on it, but not enough to then spend $20 to make it perfect, it’s not really about the money to begin with 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Wow, those Doen dresses look so good on you! I would personally tailor the straps, but I totally see why you wouldn't want to. I've actually been contemplating sewing my own tie front shirt like the Reformation top and the second Doen dress, and you've inspired me to do it!
    One small request: could you read the fabric tag and tell us exactly what the clothes are made of? It makes a huge difference to me personally whether I'm going to invest in a polyester, silk, or rayon piece, for example.

    Such an easy fix for that black and white gingham dress! Not yelling at you, just want you to know the dress is phenomenal and someone could’ve easily seam rip a stitch on the straps, removed an inch or so of fabric, sew it back up, and BOOM the dress is perfect for you! I bet even Alexa or another friend could do it in 10 minutes for free. Or maybe try to hand stitch it yourself 💜

    regarding extended sizing not being the exact same collection: I hear your concern but I've also heard the argument from others that they specifically don't want that as they want clothes that are designed with bodies that look like theirs in mind. Simply sizing things up doesn't always work well for all body types. But as you are on the cusp I can totally see how it's extra annoying for you! All these clothes looked great on you!

    Getting clothes altered to be more wearable is a great feeling, however, I also think cost per wear is important to think about for your “investment” pieces. $300 is a lot for a dress you may wear only 2-3 times a season. But $300 plus tailoring for a jacket you feel amazing in and wear 2-3 week, or for years, is a great buy.

  • @MsKathyR100

    If you had bought that gingham dress for full price at a store like Nordstrom, simple tailoring is free. That said, regardless of the price of the garment, investing in tailoring will almost always elevate the look. As someone who is plus sized without a defined waist and hips, broad shoulders and no boobs, nothing ever fits me perfectly or even close unless it’s athleisure (stretchy workout material). That said I almost never get anything tailored. I usually accept a baggy slouchy vibe for tops and skinny jeans/bottoms (but keep it stretchy).

  • @passaway13
    @passaway13 Рік тому +16

    Carrie, you look great in that gingham dress! You should think about taking the straps up yourself. It’s not that difficult to do even if you’re not great at sewing, especially if there’s a seam on the top of the shoulders (which it looks like might be the case for this dress?). Then you wouldn’t have to pay more for the alterations!

    • @fatbottomgirl5349
      @fatbottomgirl5349 Рік тому +5

    I think if you don't feel it's worth having it altered, it's not The One. But usually I feel like it's more worth it to alter the pricey pieces (if they are quality pieces to begin with) since they'll probably "pay it back" with lasting for ages.

    what if you did some videos learning about small sewing fixes since a lot of the audience may have sizing issues with different brands. Like if I was near you I could adjust those straps and add a small gusset in the side using fabric from the hem. Not yelling, but it can be fun to learn skills that can help a lot of different outfits

    I love all things fashion, and I read an article about plus size clothing. The reason that brands don’t sell all items in extended sizes is that the clothing patterns are designed to fit certain dimensions. If they try to increase the size the clothing looks distorted and unflattering. It is not to be mean to people, but rather that every item is not designed for every body type. If people want acceptance than they also need to accept that not every item of clothing is going to fit their body type. The good news is that there are better options for larger bodies. When I was a child in the 90s, the only clothes for plus size people were huge tent shirts and leggings.

    • @ellorasen6149

      a multi million dollar company can afford to hire plus size people to come in for a fitting, so that they can mould it for fit. It's just a clear choice that they are not making. I have much smaller brands do it, so big brands have no excuse.

  • @malenab9238
    @malenab9238 Рік тому +2

    This might be a wild and controversial suggestion, but for the last dress maybe you could get it altered into shirt and skirt that way you actually get wear out of it if you would wear those more than the dress. Alterations may be expensive, as well as the initial purchase, but if you’re going to have more long term wear that way, then it’s worth the investment.

    $300 for it to be see through. These companies are ridiculous. And it's a shame bc that blue Doen dress was CUUUUTE but they're out of their minds since the quality-to-pricepoint is crappy. I would love to see a video of you trying to wear your fun dresses or pieces more often. There’s a creator on TikTok who wears her favorite dresses everyday. I like that she doesn’t wait for special occasions to wear stuff. Seize the day and wear the dress 👏🏻

    Tailor that gingham dress! It’s gorgeous! When I had a job that I had to wear suits or business dresses for, I always spent the little extra to have them tailored. Rarely do you find off the rack that fits perfectly. I am 5’10 but wear a 34” inseam so very short torso. I often had to had pieces tailored. I am more willing to tailor more expensive pieces than cheaper items.

    I bought myself a mini sewing machine and I modify my clothes from time to time. I was just sewing today. It doesn't work for jean but that might be a better investment. FYI I had never handled a sewing machine before and beyond some crooked line I recommend it for small repairs or adjustments

    I love that first dress!! I agree that these companies totally miss the boat on "inclusive" sizing when they don't offer the same things for plus size. I find so many amazing cute modern edgy things at Torrid. Thrifting as a plus size is definitely not fun but I still look, especially in the men's section (graphic tees, vests, blazers, etc) or just look for purses, shoes, scarves if the thrifting is tiny sizes!
