- I'm doing the first pruning to the top of my Royal Oak seedlings! I discuss my thoughts on developing the tree for the future and we go back in time to look at the history of these trees.
The Royal Oaks are English Oaks or Quercus robur trees.

I keep thinking your trees are looking better and better. From when I first started watching your channel many years ago, my uneducated opinion is that you've really improved a lot. But then I also realise that I've started to really enjoy the "sticks" :-) I finally have a yard again after many, many years and my wife and I have been growing many plants. I just love looking at the buds and leaves and tiny branches poking out. I love looking at how it's growing and imagining how I'm going to prune it. So many joyous things that you've brought to my life! Thanks!

Always a pleasure to watch your videos as you give clear explanations of your decisions in styling. So nice of you to get the gooseberries for the two ducks. Do you have a video in which you show how you made the penjing with the houses/trees? I'd love to see that. You have accomplished in that work what many of us in this hobby are seeking to do. Your oaks are doing really well, I have 2 similar sized English oaks to yours and one is in the ground so I can get it to thicken up, interested to see what shape you'll develop yours into the future.
Am I missing the premieres? I know that the last 2 or 3 I caught just as they ended, and those were about 3 weeks ago.
Now, love what you're doing with the oaks! Cashews doing good! Baobabs are coming along. Looks like you have the feather blight under control. I just started having antler blight to deal with on my plum seedling. Our 40°+ heat hasn't helped except for my prairie prickly pear.

Love English oaks! I had to bring acorns back from England, they don't grow in the wilderness here in Spain. They're similar to the Pyrenean oaks (the ones that I promised to send you some seedlings... waiting til autumn when they won't die in the post) But the English oaks definitely grow faster and bigger. OTOH you can get smaller leaves on the Pyreneans, so you can make smaller bonsai with them.

I'm trying an experiment, I took 5 acorn sprouts and used grafting tape and wire to bind them together as a fuzing bonsai so far it is fuzing together and doing very well

We have a number of Royal Oak’s in Australia too. Planted in commemoration of the same event. Great idea to grow acorns from them…

Hi Nigel!! I actually winced when you did those lower cuts on the first oak. I went back to watch the cuts again and I noticed that they would have made some good starts all on their own.
Have you ever done air layering? You are so good that I have no doubt that they would all have struck. I haven't tried layering with oaks, but I don't see why it wouldn't work on them. I think you could get root development quick enough that it wouldn't have created any noticeably larger pruning scars by the time you cut them off. I don't remember seeing you do an air layer, so I had to ask.

Hi Nigel , I oaks are my favourite tree by far , my first lot of bonsai oaks I tried , I cut the tap roots off and they all died , ( whether that was the cause of death one will never know ) so that why I was interested in what you were going to do with them , I never knew abou king George oak, I have 3 King Charles ( Boscobel) oaks I’m growing ( about the size of yours 3-4 years old ) and I really don’t want to loose them , I have a few forests of oaks of unknown species which I can probably experiment with . Anyways as soon as spring gets going down here in oz I will be off on an oak tree journey . Thanks as always for the great video and advise … Peter , Tasmania
I have a delonix regia pre-bonsai tree which is about 3 or 4 years old. Used to be 2, one died because of the summer heat. Really interested to see how you shape yours.

Loved this video.. The Royal oak is one of my favorite trees.. But it's just not growing in my climate.. it's been almost 2 years but still looks like a seedling.. is there anything that I can do about it?

I agree on showing more trunk and display the future amazing bark but as it in 11:10 your trunk is straight, little taper and with no movement. I think is better to prune to a one of those low branches that you pruned to achieve movement and taper. In 5 years doing this you end up with a nice trunk. Prune in winter, let grow for the rest of year and repeat.

Hi Nigel, it's pretty common to see ruined or deformed leaves in almond seedlings. Actually, it's very common in all almond trees! Leaves are very delicate and they usually become damaged, deformed or yellow. Sometimes, especially in hot days, almond trees can even partially defoliate themselves. That's what they usually do here in nature and pots too

I'm currently growing a royal oak in a very very small pot. Is it recommended I use a large pot, tree is about 3 months old.

Hi Nigel. I like watching you trim your bonsai. The results you achieve are beautiful and they look like they are second nature to you. I have an issue with a large bonsai that I am bringing back from near death. It is a very large ficus. The trunk is thicker than a can of sofa. Is there anyway of getting some suggestions from you on how to trim it. I have been nursing it fir a couple of years and the leaves are finally growing back in with some vigour. I’m afraid to cut any branches off and remove any of the growth that has finally come back. It does need a trim, I just don’t want to ruin it! I have pictures I could send to you if I knew where to send them.

how are the royal oaks doing since the pruning
I'm in zone 7, can I hard prune now on my oak? It's about 3 years old and it's too high for my liking of development.
Seems like you could have potted those root cuttings and started another tree?!
That is what I would have done, the worse thing that can happen is they don't grow and fail.
The best thing is that in two years you have another tree!
As a general rule the Japanese like to try and have a trunk size that is such that the finished height of the tree is about 6 times the thickness of the trunk. Of course like just about everything else in this art, this is only a guideline and not a steadfast rule.

Will you eventually end up pruning the top of the second one down to create taper? Or is that only necessary on certain species?
Funny Katy, I think I'll just leave the trunks on the oaks as they are and see how it goes.

The soil is replaced and the roots continue to grow into the new bonsai soil.

My father is 80 this year! And he's a long time bonsai artist - and the traditional 80 gift is OAK! I'm not quite versed so not sure at what stage to get the oak? Can you help? I'm located in CT, USA.

Hey Nigel don't prune the lowest branches they r called sacrificing branches they give u large trunk in the tree that u can notice below the trunk of the tree so don't prune them until the size of the trunk u need ... This is my tip for u thoungh I am following this ! 👍
