I suppose a lot of people grew up knowing the Disney version without knowing the books the stories originated from specially as child often won't pay attention to things such as the name of the author.
Mildly Majestic And the other is called "Now We Are Six. Hence why the book that Jesse picked up by the guy who wrote parodys to Milne's poems book is called Now We Are Sixty. 😊
have you heard of the princess saves herself in this one? It's v good it's being released on Valentine's Day (it was originally self pub but now it's going trad pub)
"No matter the wreckage" is sooo good! Also, I would recomend bythe baird's poetry book, I've seen her perform some of the poems online and they are beautiful
I am an huge poetry fan so I'm really glad you made this video. One of my favorites is Today Means Amen by Sierra DeMulder. She is who got me into poetry and it's a really powerful collection.
Milk and honey is so powerful. My best friend brought it for me this month and I read it in one sitting, which I haven't done in a while now. It is worth reading.
Jesse it's great that you're reading poetry! A Poem for Every Night of the Year is a beautiful book, inside and out. I have it and I read poems from it every night and I'm absolutely loving it. Antologies like this are great because they can give you a taste of many different types of poetry and poets so you can figure out what you really like and see all the examples of different kinds of poetry that you might have not read otherwise.
Hey Jesse, the cover for A Poem for Every Night of the Year is fabulous! And Now We Are 60 sounds hilarious! I will definitely have to pick that one up! You got some really great books in this haul!
Milk and honey was such a beautiful and moving book! I was in a poetry slump for years and after reading that book I was so moved I just wrote for hours after! You will enjoy it!!
A Light in the Attic and or Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein (author of the Giving Tree ) both are collections of poems and drawings. His poems seem very lighthearted but then sometimes something deep will just hit you RIGHT in the face!!!!!
One I've heard that's supposed to be really good is 'The Princess Saves Herself in This One'. I haven't read it yet, but I really want to! I love poetry, so keep us updated! :)
You definitely need to check Sylvia Plath's work "Ariel." The best part about this book is that there's a three part video series on UA-cam where the poet herself reads the poems. I've been reading her for about four years and her voice is such an inspiration for me. Also, thank you for these recommendations! I read super old poetry so it's good to have some more modern poets to read. I can't wait to check some of these out.
Sarah Kay is amazing. Glad you picked up her collection. Rudy Francisco is also one of my favorite spoken word poets. He has a few little, mini collections out I think - I just have the one called 'Getting Stitches' which I enjoyed. You should definitely watch some of his live videos to see if you'd be interested at all.
I recommend A Body Made of You by Melissa Lee - Houghton, it's quite dark focusing on life and love but in a very blunt way. It was the first poetry book I ever read and I love it!
If you're after recommendations, Ocean Vuong has a poetry book called "The Night Sky With Exit Wounds" which is gorgeous !! He had a couple of poems online that you can check out if you want to get a feel for his work. I'm so glad you're getting into poetry because it's such a brilliant way of expressing and sharing ideas
Rita Dove is a great African-American poet. I have not read that collection but she is well worth reading. I always think one of the best ways to start with poetry is getting a couple of good anthologies.
A.A Milne is the author of Winnie the Pooh and also wrote poetry such as When We Were Six etc. I have the whole collection somewhere because they're lovely books. Nice to see his poetry being reused in a modern way!
SARAH KAY IS SO WONDERFUL!!! If you didn't pick that one up I was going to recommend it, I loved that collection! Her spoken word poetry is absolutely beautiful too, you should definitely check it out if you haven't already, there are also a lot of other wonderful poets featured on the Button Poetry UA-cam channel :)
I don't read much poetry, but I really enjoy it when I do. I read Milk and Honey a few days ago and it wasn't really my thing, but I love the poems of leunig, which are accompanied by illustrations and told as prayers, and James K Baxter too!
Just got a little stab in the heart when you didn't know the author to Winnie the Pooh!!!! I had the vhs tapes when I was little, and some of them started with a book cover being opened up with A.A. Milne's name, so even before I could read I could recognize the name! I also loved how in the tapes they were narrated like someone was reading you the actual story, and there were shots of the sentences from the book.
I legitimately JUST read "The Chaos of Longing" and "Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately" like yesterday lol and I loved both of them so much!!! I would say that I enjoyed "The Chaos of Longing" more than "Stuff I've Been Lately" because I felt that "Stuff" got a little juvenile with the language at times-but I still loved it so much!!! And just Mlik & Honey...I don't think I need to give you anymore reason to read it!!
No Matter The Wreckage is my favorite collection of poems ever! Her words are so beautiful and watching her perform is absolutely breathtaking. If you like her works you should read 'Give Me A God I Can Relate To' by Blythe Baird and 'The Princess Saves Herself in This One' by Amanda Lovelace!
I have seen some people recommend it already, but "the princess saves herself in this one" by amanda lovelace is a must read! As well as "crush" and "war of the foxes" by richard siken!
Great video! I've been meaning to get into poetry this year too. There's a collection called You Took the Last Bus Home that I will probably pick up as it just seems funny and light-hearted and easy to read. I've always viewed poetry as something I didn't really understand so I want to try and change that
This has really inspired me to pick up some poetry books. I definitely have a love hate relationship with poetry from studying it in class. You should try Listner by Lemn Sissay, he's a British poet and while I didn't like all of his poems, some where really good!
Not really a fan of modern poetry (I know, hipster over here) but I love the works of poets like TS Eliot and ee cummings. Also Charles Bukowski, mostly because he appeals to the rebel teen deep inside me.
Chasers of the Light & All the Words are Yours. Both by Tyler Knott Gregson. They are both so so so so good. I actually thought those were in this book haul!! From the video icon, I thought I saw Chasers of the Light! I was so excited, but you haven't bought them yet! But you will. They are so good! I promise!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ ELLEN HOPKINS!!! Her poetry is told in story format but it deals with hard issues like drugs, family struggles, and lots of other things and her collections are just incredible! I highly recommend! Try Perfect first that's by far my favorite!
Milk and Honey is ridiculously amazing. I admire you for reading it, primarily bc it deals with lots of women's issues. You're also hilarious and handsome, and I adore your videos 😂😂😍👏🏻
I think you can also try to read some classical poetry and I also think you might enjoy Edgar Allan Poe. Just received my copy of Milk and Honey) Super excited to read it!
I read milk and honey already, it was good. I want to read soft magic, stuff I've been feeling lately and the chaos of longing. I recommend the princess saves herself in this one by Amanda Lovelace and This is for you, only the words by Ian Thomas.
Hey Jessie!! I read poetry before and I love it. I'm really into the author Ellen Hopkins. You should try her books they are such wonderful quick reads 😍
I had to read a book called "Brown Girl Dreaming" by Jacqueline Woodson for class and I would really recommend it! It's a novel told in verse and it's absolutely beautiful.
Our Numbered Days by Neil Hilborn is really good! You can find some of his poems on the channel "Button Poetry", if you want to check him out before buying!
You should read Your Soul is a River by Nikita Gill. It came out last June, and I received a copy from a giveaway on Goodreads, and absolutely loved it. I read it in one sitting, and definitely would recommend it to anybody wanting to read it.
Jesse I swear you have more books than my school library.

Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman and Edgar Allen Poe are my favorite poets
A.A. Milne is the author of "Winnie-the-Pooh" ;)
