Hard to interview someone who's not desperate to impress anyone and is clearly at peace with himself.
exactly!!!!
Indeed...life goals
Thank u! I was wondering what that weird energy was
You my friend are quite observant.
Watch Murphy being interviewed by Carson back in the day. Huge difference. Somewhere along the way, Murphy changed. He stopped trying to impress people.
Dunno what the hell y'all are talking about. Eddie is just chilling, having a good time. He has always been like this in his interviews..just go back and watch. This wasn't bad at all.
Yalllzzz been talkin bout edy bangin tranneeeeezzzzzz?
It's as soft and humble a comeback as you will ever see.
bigmaxy07 soooooooooo true. He’s inspired me so much seeing all his recent “gigs”. I’m in awe. I feel like he has the secret to life or something. Maybe being a daddy to ten kids ;)
@@Jgjules Having ten kids would definitely keep me working.
People expect Eddie to be loud and funny like a lot comedians do when interviewed (e.g. Kevin Hart) but that’s not his style never has been.
Thank you! Dude has always Been chilled, his now passed on brother even stated. Even dave chappelle always stated how mellow Eddie is
Until he gets around his ppl!
But the thing is... he is so naturally funny it seems like he doesn't even HAVE to try
Oh thanks for clearing that up.
I wouldnt say it NEVER has been.
I didn't expect to love Dolemite Is My Name as much as I did but, man, they nailed it. And I love that it was dedicated to his brother. ❤
I love Eddie and Charlie, too and your comment convinced me to watch this movie. I was scared it wouldn't be good and I didn't want to like mess up my pristine memory based on other Eddie faves: Life, Coming to America, Rage in Harlem...Shrek, but I'll watch the Dolemite one now. Thank you!
@@2006glg Rage in Harlem? Do you mean Harlem Nights?
Aww is it dedicated to charlie? That is sweet. That man was another legend..
Charlie Murphy was great too. He had his own swag and was also very funny. Great story teller
It was amazing, I really enjoyed it.
Eddie Murphy is 58. His mustache is 25.
@Momz Davis he dyes it

🤣💯❤
Bahahaha, great comment
That ain't nothing but ultra perm
TOTALLY ALL I COULD THINK OF!!! HAHAHAHAHA
Never expected him to be so calm, quiet, and serene.
@Tripleblade 82 He's far from boring lmao
@Tripleblade 82 this interview was absolutely dreadful. Stephen tried hard to make it interesting, but man.. Eddie was masterful at keeping it pretty fucking pedestrian and boring
@Tripleblade 82 I didn't notice anything odd about the interview. Maybe because I'm an introvert myself.
Eddie feeds off his interviewer.
I think it's because he's older and has seen so much in life, Martin is the same way.
Can we as a nation collectively agree that when Eddie Murphy talks on TV, we don't bleep out a single word?
Universally sir
This guy deserves all the hugs... He's a legend!
"Coming To America" is insanely classic.
YAAS. Dont dilute it with a sequel please

How is he hard to interview?? He appears so easygoing, I love him..my all-time favorite comedian!!
Could listen to Eddie Murphy 24/7 recount such amazing stories!!! What a true gem of Hollywood.
I love the sound of Eddie Murphy's laugh when it's the deep laugh.
Carolyn Games it was always my favorite part about listening to him. Infectious! Even if you didn’t think what he said was funny, as soon as he laughed..,it was suddenly hilarious.
I love the fact that he mentioned Chaplin. I don’t feel like he gets enough credit for what he did for comedy and film in general.
I respected him for not doing the safe thing and omitting Cosby. His personal life aside, Cosby had a massive body of fantastic work that can and should be considered apart from the man himself.
Chaplin. Keaton. Fatty Arbuckle. Harold Lloyd. Laurel and Hardy. The Keystone Cops.
What? Chaplin is universially recognized as one of the greatest entertainer that ever lived. By litterally everybody. Never ever heard anyone say 'Chaplin..? Nah, not my cup of tea.'
My favorite Chaplin film is the circus.
I think it was that nasty business over in Europe. Dude was a monster.
Eddie Murphy: "I don't really know if I do a good Obama"
Also Eddie Murphy: *Does a practically flawless Obama off the cuff without a secound thought*

Yeah he was really good!
The tone was perfect
That was a garbage impersonation of Obama you fool.
Revolver yeah I’m thinking the same thing....I don’t even think he was trying to do a proper one
Love coming to America can't wait for the sequel
Eddie is so great at changing makeup and playing so many characters. Remember when he went undercover as a white guy in that SNL sketch? Hilarious!
The sequal... "leaving America"
Yah ruin a classic
@Jay Morgansorry for the delay but now that I thought about some sequels do feel like they don't care about the film I do hope it's not suing or sucks
Not sure bout sequel. its like asking for a sequel to sound of music. naaah. leave the classic alone. its alittle bit late for that
I still say "goony goo goo" when the situation permits!

Hard interview but Stephen couldn't stop smiling. You can tell he's a fan.
Eddie comes off as someone who takes themselves seriously but is trying hard not to take himself seriously.
🧐
That's me in a nutshell - That man can just make faces and I'll be laughing my ass off ;-)
Well, he's an observer and clearly a very guarded person. Every move he makes is calculated and planned.

I think it's just that he's not using the "dietary supplements" he was back in the day.
Not really... The other guy is very White n corny
He doesn’t interview often and he’s been through so much. This interview reflects that.
What has he gone through?
If y’all haven’t seen I am Dolemite on Netflix....please go watch it. Great work by Eddie and the entire cast!
The Name is Dolemite!
Yes, it really is a good movie about a genuinely inspirational guy. It's not super-hilarious all the way through, it's not meant to be, but it's very satisfying to watch.
Watched it was a great movie ,can't wait for him to go back to stand up he is a great comedian
'Delirious' and 'Raw' are still 2 of my favorite stand ups of all time. I thought Murphy was the funniest person I'd ever seen when I was a kid. He was my first favorite comedian... 👍
Same. Those are absolute truth and timeless
His "AIDS" jokes were brutal. though. I've that he since has apologized for them.
@ChucksterOLove me too...I watched his stand ups repeatedly like they were sitcoms. Lol.
Karen Hampton VHS
You have great taste 😊
I love that he’s so soft spoken
Eddie is cool as a fan but he is more hard to interview than Deniro. Just seems super cautious. Stephen is great at what he does.
he was, but I thought he did fine, he was just directing his attention at the audience a lot more than Stephen, which I think made it seem like he was nervous I guess.
Adrion Jones like Deniro,he’s laid back. I know what you mean. Yikes. Only Stephen and Graham Norton can get good interviews out of either guy.
true most people seem like they are laid back i think on here and on Graham Norton than really any other place that i can think of. what i'm hoping is we get our old Eddie Back and by that is i love the Eddie from the 80's when he was doing R rated films like Harlem Nights which is a fantastic fucking movie. fast forward nearly a decade later when all he did was family films i'm sorry but that's not my Eddie, yeah some of them were good and he was a perfect Choice for Donkey
that's not a question but go back doing R rated films that's where he shines the most i think. and going back to Stand up which i hope is just like his old Material from the 80's as it should be, when Robin Williams went back in (2002) that special was awful but when he went back 10 years later it was a damn good one i think.
Lol nobody is tougher than DeNiro. DeNiro would’ve responded with every question by only saying “Yeah”. You would’ve had to force DeNiro to tell a story. Eddie told his Obama story without even being asked.
Eddie is great with Jerry Seinfeld. Look at that. It just didn't click with Colbert.
‘Hot tub’ - THE best SNL sketch EVER!
It's hot in the hot tub 😁
I actually cried tears when Eddie did that James Brown Hot tube sketch!!
OldRaver1 it sure is
Omg!!!!
I still crack up when I see that sketch 🔥🛁😂🤣😂🤣
Eddie and Deniro man, legends with similar interview styles....a wall, a brick friken wall...gotta love em
Showtime was so underrated
People say he’s hard to interview but I just feel like his in the moment not pre planned interview questions and he’s thinking about each response etc. I actually prefer this compared to canned stories you often hear on the shows
James Patrick - Artist good point

Stephen was in absolute awe of Eddie. I don't think Eddie knows his impact on other comedians

Whoa, careful, friend! ;-) I'm in Britain; being declared 'a national treasure' used to be great, but nowadays it means the tabloid press wants to see you stuffed into a big wooden chest and buried under a tree.
X marks the spot... (Can you dig it?)
Indeed he is.
One the best
Eddy Gordo or Eddie Murphy?
His Obama impersonation sounds like "vote for Jeff Johnson, the name that you know" 😂😂😂
man he's a tough guest to interview.
slow starter but ends well ...
Really gets you psyched for his standup, eh?
Noplay I think it’s because he’s been out of the limelight for a while and now people treat him like a god, and I think he is scared about that
When the promotion department says you have to promote a movie you made to honor a guerilla film maker.
It's cause he was trying to get information from his stand up asking questions that would get him to take about it so he wasn't trying to talk about it lol
The vibe you get from him is so humble you wonder if he's aware of his greatness. It feels like Eddie doesn't realise how great he is.
I don’t think there’s a voice more iconic than Eddie Murphy’s.
Morgan Freeman?
You mean donkey 🤣🤣
Paul Stanley I’m not sure tbh

You can still see the pain from Charlie in Eddie.
I was thinking that too. I was surprised he brought his name up a few times, maybe that's part of his getting over him being gone. Poor guy, it must suck going thru a lose like that while also being a public figure.
*Definitely*
I said the same thing as well ...they were close ..
Yes you can he loved his brother he was so classy he gave Charlie a private service not a circus Charlie was still grieving over his wife he loved dearly died 2year before Charlie Eddie said that all he was doing working and taking care of his kid Charlie jr gave him a beautiful eulogy that by his high school sweetheart rest well Charlie blessing
The man has aged well, his mustache has not aged at all.
Kelvin W 😂😂😂😂😂
Incredible to think he's 58 yrs old- looks the same as he did in the 80's.
He’s a sweet guy but I never realized how awkward here’s to be interviewed. I think it surprised Stephen too.
I think he's more of an introvert in Real Life than on stage or in a role. Remember Robin Williams. Whenever he was genuine and couldn't or wouldn't crack a joke, he was quiet and even a little awkward.
Certainly, this interview made me appreciate Eddie Murphy a lot more, for the deeper layers he showed
Feels like he knew. They had enough questions prepared to cover the silent spots.
It seemed like he was almost surprised at the applause in places, while at the same time soaking it up and savouring it.
He wasn't hostile or withdrawn-it seemed like he wanted to be there and do the show and plug the film, but he simply hadn't made much effort to have stuff to talk with the host about. So it was like yes, no, I don't know, just a bit awkward, with these wonderful little offhand gems thrown in where he was warm and very funny. Private, thoughtful, and mature in a way we might not have guessed 30 years ago. : ) I guess I expected the old flash, energy, and edge, so this was interesting.
Jacqueline Rimmer I’m sure Stephen Colbert did his homework as usual. On occasion, Eddie seems somewhat shy and humble. He’s also been perceived as arrogant and/or aloof at times. So, there’s no telling what facet of his persona may appear in different circumstances. it’s also possible he’s just be promoting his upcoming works and not focused on cracking “jokes” per se. He’s a naturally funny guy and pretty savvy in the business. So, I’m willing to bet he’s playing his cards right in anticipation of upcoming projects.
This was refreshing. Stephen doing what he does so unbelievably well, and Eddie... so refreshing to hear him speak. Such a quiet legend.
Oh yeah! Loved Murphy's stand up. I grew up (teen years) loving his shows and stints from the comedy hour on Sunday nights. I don't care about what he did or does in his private life. This man is a comedic genius. He needs to come back!!!
This man made alot of my childhood happy. Eddie was a man I inspired to be like. Happy and funny. Welcome back.
He's so calm and soft spoken in real life but on screen he's loud and wild lol such a great actor and comedian

Please do Mr Robinson, Eddie. We need another Mr Robinson sketch in this day and age.
NewhamMatt funny you should ask. Watch Delirious and see what response the last person that requested that got. Lol. In all seriousness you're right though. I love that sketch and really any of Eddie Murphy's SNL work. The man is just hilarious. Hand down.
@@khrashingphantom9632 I admit to not having watched Delirious all the way through (starting off with all the jokes about gays and AIDS makes it a bit tougher in this day and age), but I'm guessing he got sick of people always asking him to do the same bits a la when Bill Hicks lost it. It's just that, to me, Mr Robinson appears to be his one character from classic SNL that is still insanely relevant.
NewhamMatt I don't recall any of the AIDs jokes in that special at all although he does open up with some pretty rough gay jokes I'm not going to lie. But the special is still definitely worth checking out all the way through. There's a reason so many people reference it as a steeple in stand up history. Although I will warn you it is aged and very raunchy. But no he didnt lose his cool like Bill Hicks, actually Eddie doesn't say anything at all concerning Mr. Rob. Just watch that clip on UA-cam. It's absolute gold!
I would stab a nun to get another "Mister Robinson's Neighborhood" sketch.
Eddie seems like a very reserved person outside of the spotlight. That really came through in this interview.

Yahoo. So happy Eddie is hosting SNL!! This is making my 2019.
I registered for SNL tickets last August and just found out that I got 2 for the December 21 show with Eddie Murphy as host. This is the greatest surprise ever! This never happens to me.
You can see he’s been hurt by Hollywood and people in general. He’s extremely guarded. So different from young, innocent Eddie Murphy.
i still love everything u did Eddie Murphy one of the all time greats!!!
A "Coming To America" remake/ sequel is something I need so badly. Eddie Murphy is such an incredible legend.
I agree. The hype is going to be insane when it comes out!
Trading Places too.
I have always loved Eddie Murphy. He’s my favorite SNL player of all time, and I grew up on Eddie; he was just OUTSTANDING AND HYSTERICAL on there, he created the greatest characters and arguably was the greatest all time on SNL. His stand up was groundbreaking, laugh out loud funny, and pulled no punches, then became legendary. His movies from Coming To America to Trading Places to Beverly Hills Cop to 48 Hours to Shrek to Dream Girls were phenomenal then became iconic. There would be no Chris Rock, no Dave Chappelle without Eddie Murphy. And the fact that he’s such a nice, humble, genuine person in real life, and fame never went to his head (and that Bill Cosby always hated him and chastised him cause he cursed in his routines, and look what Cosby did-can you get your head around that kind of hypocrisy??) just makes you love him even more. He is one of a kind. A living legend. And personally, I am so stoked that he’s doing stand up again and has finally made Coming To America 2. Can Not Wait!!!!
Eddie is one of my childhood heroes 😁👍 good to see him. Interesting personality
Eddie's work speaks for itself, so he just sits and smiles at interviews! Lol

Eddie's so at peace with himself that it radiates. Like it's emitting a cool "Kneel before my presence" kind of a thing.
Oct 2019: Eddie admits nobody wants to go back to SNL and just put on an "ok show".
Dec 2019: Eddie kills it, makes the other SNL actors break character, puts on the funniest SNL I've seen in years!
Eddie's all zen, lol. Awwe, robbed of that oscar though, still gets me right here.
The person he was forgetting was Elvis.
Eddie is so humble. Such a classy guy!
I loved the movie ‘A Vampire in Brooklyn’, as well as the one where he was a robot being run by all the little eddies inside! Especially when he needed money🤣😂😂
"Ass is good and evil is good, and if you get a piece of evil ass, Woooo!!!"
Eddie Murphy in "A Vampie in Brooklyn"
Eddie seems like a great guy, I love seeing him interviewed
I love how he got a little looser towards the end of the interview. I imagine doing all this press can be tiring and uncomfortable. Especially if you’re just an ordinary person doing your job and getting as you feel, a lot of undue attention. But when people cheered for his return to stand up, you can see that touched him. Very heartwarming!
Man! Eddy Murphy doesn't get old!! He does take care of himself very well.
Rasputia...my favourite Eddy Murphy character.
Didn’t seem like he knew much about Eddie’s wk before he interviewed him other than the mainstream stuff. When Eddie did the eye like he was wondering if he was going to ask a question I was soooo sleep 😂. Eddie is hilarious. You can tell he will roast you without trying 😂
