Nice long poke. In the field is the real deal. Always brings a lot of factors that you can't really replicate elsewhere.

Yep. Shooting directly south so no coriolis, alittle spin with 1 &7 twist. That wind though....

I just spent the last week on that exact ridge. Had that exact same stag in my camp for 3 nights in a row. He was very good entertainment.

Awesome, mate. I found your footprints. Did you ping a 9 out of there?

@@hardantlerhunting9691 one guy on the ridge South of that one got two in one morning, one of those was the nine your thinking of. Personally, i passed up two stags, looking for something nicer, ended up not seeing anything worthwhile, so shot a yearling hind on last day for meat to take home. Yeah, those will be my boot prints.

@@rgibson759 Yea nice mate. I wish more guys would let stags walk as we would see a lot more 5+ year old stags around. I like the Wapiti foundation model and wish more people had this mind around herd management etc.

Nice work, really cool photography. Rimutakas sounds like a dangerous spot during the roar?

@snoop2477 What... really. If someone did that to me, they would be wise to run a country mile. 🤔

Hi mate. I admire your ethics in leaving that 8 pointer but, and its a big but, aren't you aware there's going to be a 1080 drop in a couple of months, so I doubt he's going to turn Into a 14 pointer. Sad eh, bloody 1080
    Cheers Rasta

Hey Rasta, I'm aware, yes. I'm not sure if you have camped in the northern remutakas, but the infestation of critters makes sleeping hard...it's feral. I'm not convinced 1080 is a totally bad thing for the deer. From my observation, bird life is the best it's been in the remutakas and also deer population, even after the Nov drop, which had repellant on it. WARO is a different story, and yes, we probably do need to shoot more deer. But if I won't eat it or hang it on my wall, I leave it. Thanks

Admirable restraint leaving the young 8 pointer-well done Stanley
However…….. 972 yards in my opinion is NOT ethical
Shooting at a gong is fine but long range target practice on living sentient animals ….. very high risk of wounding and consequent suffering
It matters not whether it’s a deer/goat/rabbit whatever we have a responsibility to dispatch animals cleanly quickly and humanely If I can’t get close enough then I don’t take the shot …. Period
    Long range
“Hunting “ ?sniping. Doesn’t interest me -to each his own but 975 yards in the wind??????

Thanks, mate. Is bow hunting ethical...it's closer? What I love about hunting is that it's one of the only unregulated sports in the world without a ref in the middle of it. Appreciate the comment 🙂👍

@@hardantlerhunting9691 no worries . The point I’m trying to make is there are so many variables you can not control or accurately accommodate
at extreme ranges - there is in my opinion unacceptable risk of wounding ( blowing a leg off/ gut shot etc)
Do you long range guys in that situation traipse over to search and rectify ?? - we all know how finding the spot where the animal was can be very difficult and if gut shot good luck trying to find without a good dog- even then far from a given
Or do you shrug and say “ oh well thems the breaks “
You are correct we have no referees or audience to judge our actions- but it is up to us and our conscience
Even if I see an animal at 200 yards if I can close that distance to even closer then personally that’s what I will do -that’s the essence of hunting in my opinion
Don’t get me wrong I think you are a thinking and feeling person and I’m not attacking you personally hot barrels mate 👍

@exNZFS thanks mate, appreciate the thoughts. I put the bow away after I lost a big boar at 15 yards. The arrow stopped in his shield, I felt really bad for him. My rifle is still holding 1750 fps and 1270 ftlbs of energy at 1000 yards. To put that in perspective, a 308 using a 150g soft point holds the same energy numbers at 280 yards. Large red deer really need 1000 ftlbs of energy to create trauma, smaller bodied animals need less. I agree ethics matters, but if we want perfect ethical killing in any hunting situation, we should just take photos. It's a tricky topic as many factors come into play...skill, projectile choice, atmospheric conditions, and the list goes on. Keep well and appreciate the banter 🙂👍

    • @exNZFS
      @exNZFS 4 місяці тому

@@hardantlerhunting9691 absolutely Stanley robust discussion is a good thing- I don’t think how many foot pounds of energy though important is not really relevant here .
You can gut shoot an animal with a fancy high powered cartridge-or blow its leg off - it’s still a wounded animal
The issue is one of shot placement - no amount of foot pounds will make up for poor shot placement which is the issue with extreme range
Assuming you consistently shoot MOA in field conditions- that’s a group dispersion of 10” at 1000 yards that’s about most of the vital area for broadside chest - the prime problem is wind - if you have ever shot fullbore NRA at trentham you have range wind flags to assist frequently there’s conflicting crosswinds And you can be shooting 1000 yard’s with 6 yards adjustments at times if there’s a wind change then that’s a poor hit or miss
In the field you can calculate wind at the muzzle but have no idea what it’s doing in the intervening space between you and the animal and take an “educated guess “
Easily you could be 2 MOA or more out equating to 20” error on top of your group dispersion - that’s unacceptable and we owe animals more respect than that.
With regards projectile energy: in my culling career among the many caliber’s I used one of my favorites is .222 rem shot placement is critical and if used prudently it’s a devastating performer with precision bush hunting BUT there are shots you can’t and don’t make in knowledge of that ( shots you can make with a more powerful caliber with better penetration)
I have shot several deer with a 22 rim fire you would say woefully inadequate for deer- and correctly so BUT with shot placement in the head (side on) base of ear a devastating performer at close range If there’s too many variables and an accurate shot isn’t on then let the animal walk 👍
