It so strange that when typing I know where all the letters, numbers and symbols are located, but when you ask me to recite the keyboard layout I'm lost. Lol

short answer is, QWERTY was chosen by the big typewriting companies which had a monopoly on typewriters so qwerty became the default keyboard. The thing is, even that was never mentioned in the video. This video pretty much only talked about other typewriter layouts.
I thought they were going to actually educate the audience - perhaps talk about the reasons behind the design...the most frequently used English words? I only feel like my preconceived notions of capitalistic greed and market evolution have been reinforced, nothing more...nothing less.
Notice how the title is "How QWERTY conquered keyboards" and not "Why letters are arranged on the keyboard the way they are" If you were expecting an answer with the former, you played yourself.
Usually these types of videos have some weird twist or reasoning why something is the way it is. This is just because a bunch of typewriter manufacturers came together and said "hey let's just use that one" I see where you're coming from
@@behavior2836 Yea I guessed so. My point was that lots of countries have querty keyboards. (All my keyboards here in Japan are QUERTY :-) (When I input Japanese 日本語等、there is a toggle switch so the keys produce different input, but the keyboard is still QUERTY... And I guess I'm a foreigner :-)
Yeah wtf, the video made some dramatic pause in the middle, just to tell you some rich people created a monopoly on printers, than didn't go into detail
Normally I quite enjoy these videos but it really felt like you didn't actually say anything in this one... there was no point to it. "People debate if qwerty is the best but there were others that existed, they might not have been better though, but either way qwerty is what it is" -- "Okay..."
This video was a jumbled mess. The video premise was (How QWERTY conquered). Only one line backed up the premise. "If you took a class, you took it for the most common keyboard. ". It seems like they had nothing to say and just filled it with a bunch of nonsense.
This video is an explanation of why modern keyboard configuration is QWERTY, if you ever had a question before. At least, I have asked this question and I wonder the reason behind this configuration. And there, it does explain it to me. One of the reasons I love Vox is because of this, they always catch those hard-to-detect questions and ask them, then explain them.
Thomas Coull yeah it's super spread out and has a lot of information I didn't really need, like they could have gotten the same point across in half the time
*So Basically at this point, People have gotten SO used to qwerty that no one wants to change it and come under fire, so it keeps going on . That's basically it.*
summed it up in one. any improvement, marginal or otherwise, when using other layouts would take time and effort to relearn the keyboard along with the fact that if you got used to it and someone else needed to the use the computer, they would be really confused. This is assuming you're a touch typist which is something most of us need to do in today's society. I suspect any visual typist wouldn't have such a problem transitioning, but they wouldn't really see any improvement in speed or accuracy if that is the case.
Qwerty is a perfectly acceptable system. It's not like the 2nd amendment which is outdated and needs to be changed, qwerty is an appropriate format for typing and there's no real need to change it now.
At this point, after using the qwerty keyboard since I was a kid, I would never want to even try a different configuration of keys. I can type without looking at the keys now, but it would take me a lifetime to get that good with a new keyboard. Not to mention the fact that I've mastered the slide text on my phone, as well lol..
From typing like my mother, to becoming a fast touch typist on QWERTY, it took just about a few months in my 6th grade keyboarding class. Although everyone in my class was just as annoyed at having to learn the new style as you are, we all eventually picked it up by the end of the semester. I have no doubt that you could do the same. I think being able to touch type now might actually help you a bit. And while I also don't intend to switch because of convenience, I wouldn't be opposed to it if I was forced to, since it would take maybe a few weeks at most.
It really doesn't take that long to adapt. I am bilingual and I regularly change keyboard layout on my computer when I switch languages. I can touch-type in both easily.
Can't deny his creativity or originality, the liberal use of "kew-er-tee" (not everyone pronounces it that way) and, what made me laugh, "machines for shooting" :)
For the people typing it is more important. The job of the typist was to type correctly and quickly it was irrelevant if they were typing a personal letter or a $1,000,000 contract.
In Korean we have all the consonants on the left side and all the vowels on the right. Personally, I think that layout is perfect, But English doesn’t have enough vowels for that layout.
Maybe in words like "pawn", "awe", "law" etc. But I would say it's never used as a single vowel, that os, surrounded by cosumns and producing one syllable by itself. So that's still a consumn.

Yeah, I'm from Switzerland and grew up using a qwertzu keyboard. When I went to America it took me a while to actually be able to type on a qwerty keyboard without having to actually look down at my keyboard.
Dire Wolf I live in luxembourg (a small country between france and germany) and when i bought my laptop they had a choice between azerty, qwerty and qwertzU
no, that's not the definition of overrated. o·ver·rate ˌōvərˈrāt/Submit verb past tense: overrated; past participle: overrated have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved. "dismissing the work as pompous and overrated" synonyms: overestimate, overvalue, think too much of, attach too much importance to, praise too highly "I think his music is overrated"
As a kid I never questioned QWERTY until I found out there were other keyboard types while playing in the settings. I was like: oh some people like it different. After that I never questioned it again, because I had video games to play.
@@WuizGaming That's the reason why we have the A below the Q. There it's easier accessable. The Q is almost useless in German and therefore it's in the last corner, where it's hard to reach
It is pretty easy to understand why everyone still uses qwerty. Mankind got used to it , everyone expects it , and humans tend to resist change anytime it is possible. Just look at America and the change to metric system. Thats it.
Eduardo Borges Yes! that's why the german keyboard still is QWERTZ Today. Because People are used to it . Y is rarely used so that's why they changed the position with the Z. (At least that's the reason I know?) oh and yeah on the right side we have additional Ü Ö Ä .
America should change to metric system because it's much better, has better conversions and stops mishaps like the mars one from happening again. There is no reason to switch from qwerty right now
If, like me, you heard QWERTY was about slowing down typists, there's a surprising amount of literature debunking it. This paper, from 1985, appears to be one of the more influential ones in the surprisingly large field of QWERTY scholarship (and it helped this video a lot). campus.fsu.edu/bbcswebdav/users/jcalhoun/Courses/Growth_of_American_Economy/Chapter_Supplemental_Readings/Chapter_28/David-Clio_and_the_Economics_of_Qwerty.pdf -Phil
It's not per se that it's about _slowing typists down_, though that's a fairly reasonable simplification of the truth. The arrangement was to prevent keys from jamming, as the article you link states. (Also, I found the archaic use of the term "bully", "bullying optimism" really amusing.) This, in part, means placing common key combinations far apart from each other, which can in some cases cause slow down. A slower typist is also, obviously, less likely to jam. So while it's not per se correct to claim QWERTY is "about slowing down typists", it quite clearly is designed in a way that indirectly encourages less than optimal typing speeds.
Regarding Dvorak, it's also very important to note that its advantages are not limited to speed. Yes, it certainly is significantly faster (as the many converts such as myself can attest) than QWERTY, but far more importantly the fact that it reduces hand travel and balances out hand use means that it is also an inherently more ergonomic keyboard. You're less likely to develop RSIs regularly using Dvorak than you are with QWERTY. In today's workplace, that is *super* important.
Jim Cullen I switched to the Dvorak layout for a few months, and I did find it easier on my hands because there is less travel as the most commonly used letters are on the home row. However I wasn’t able to reached the sustained typing speeds I can maintain using the QWERTY layout.
You couldn't catch up in a few months? Were you going cold turkey and regularly making sure to practise? Perhaps most importantly, did you switch you keycaps around and/or put stickers on the keys or not? Because it's actually widely regarded as a very *bad* idea to have stickers/switched keys. That encourages laziness and makes it easy to learn hunt-and-peck typing or quasi-touch-typing, but delays your ability to truly touch type. It took me about a month and a half before I was as fast on Dvorak as I was on QWERTY before the switch. After two-to-three months I had improved by about 20% over my initial QWERTY speed, where I plateaued.

They did. The only reason it's almost universal in America is because the biggest manufacturer(s) made them in that format, and typist classes trained for it. Therefore, it's overrated.
But why I still cannot find the answer of why is it patterned the way it is. I mean does it has something to do with typing efficiency or is it easier for fingers to access those keys??? Whatever.
I use the same password for everything, its "12345". I post this with all usernames and websites on my facebook wall regularily in order to not forget it.
Well, the topic is certainly interesting, really fascinating to know where this order of letters came from. Probably 99 % chance of having this kind of keyboard is a bit too much, I personally have QWERTZ and many countries have their own kind typography. That being said, it is super interesting the way you present this topic and make us question things we always took for granted and didn't even wonder why it is the way it is. Thank you!
He presumably meant QWERTY or one of its derivatives like AZERTY and QWERTZ. It was only meant to differentiate the QWERTY family of keyboards from Dvorak, Colemak, etc.
The letters are in the other they are because it's pretty easy to find out what letters are most common in a certain language. Once you have a basic layout and an idea of how people effectively type it's actually quite easy to find the optimal place to put letters within that system. It's however far harder to predict the general keyboard design that optimists typing. On one side you want to optimize for speed but on the other you end up with more errors that way which on type writers without a back key was a massive issue.

I think it's Qwerty because it makes typing easier. The vowels mostly lie were you fingers stay.m and the letters for 'the' are very close. 'Er' is literally already in order, just like 'as'. That makes sense, right?

+Carl I'm American, but when I was staying in Germany about ten years ago, I used the computer of my German friend that I was staying with to surf the internet and send e-mails to my mom. I never did get used to the the z and the y arrangement on the keyboard. I would have to constantly go back and edit my writing to turn my z's back into y's. Like I would write "yellow" as "zellow," or "type" as "tzpe." That's why QWERTY, or QWERTZ, will never go away. When you've been typing nearly your whole life, the muscle memory is there.
The QWERTY pattern wasn't randomised, on the top row of letters spells the largest word you can spell on a keyboard. Typewriter (EDIT) I just saw the credits and im not going to delete it im just gonna feel sad
I learned typing in elementary school with Qwerty, but when I began to study French and German I found it far easier to go ahead and learn their standard keyboards as well, AZERTY and QWERTZ respectively. Qwerty is by no means the sole standard but it certainly seems to have gained a place akin to that in English.
I love how people get offended because it's directed to the US audience. You know, where the company is from, where their employees are from, and where they operate?
I agree that more global topics on Vox would be interesting, but this complaint is like going to the BBC and complaining that they focus too much on news in the UK.
Thierry Schork excuse me im from Flanders Belgium and we all use azerty to Ps i've always used azerty and wethever you've used througout your life is what your best with
it is funny, im dutch(qwerty) and my gf comes from flanders(azerty), and i find it interesting how they play minecraft or other games with that keyboard. they use strange enough wasd instead of zqsd. and if i tell them that it is better too use that on a azerty keyboard they say that it isn't right to do that??? for dutch i prefer qwerty..
Vox on the metric system: We should switch to metric because everyone is using it. Vox on QWERTY: We should have different keyboards because everyone is using QWERTY.
To be fair, (even though I don't really like Vox that much), there is a difference between the two, since a keyboard layout only affects the person using it.
I changed from qwerty to colemak about 9 months ago and have absolutely no regrets, my typing speed is way up. Surprised they didn't even mention it in this video.
I also use Colemak for touch typing. When I decide that I need to learn how to touch type properly actually I start with qwerty, but then I realized; why I have to learn an old stupid standard?. Learning Colemak was a much better experience then qwerty.
SuperSandro2000 their are added physical benefits, less prone to carpal tunnel, look into ortholinear keyboards as well for added benefits and even ergonomic if you want as much benefits as you can, I currently use the "infinity ergodox" and absolutely love it
Putt T. He mentions that theory at 2:37. According to that theory, the reasoning for making consecutively typed keys separated far apart is to keep them from jamming. Keys jammed when two hammers swung too close together in opposite directions, causing their hammers to hook together, and you'd have to reach in and pry them apart.
"We all use it but don't know why, that's the definition of overrated"? Wtf, no? I think that would be even closer to underrated than overrated, because nobody appreciates it as much as they should for how important it is in everyday life.
I have no idea how that sentence got approved. Did no one proofread? It makes as much sense as "shooting people is the definition of conservation of energy"
those things when you have QWERTZ keyboard and someone in game says how do is start train? i say Y and he said... but its not working and i said... try more times... he still not working... me OH MY GOD!!! i have QWERTZ keyboard go and press that ZZZZ!
When we moved from the US to Germany, I was surprised to find the 'Y' and the 'Z' switch places on German keyboards. Odd to me, but I guess they use the 'Z' much more, so place it more predominately. We ended up switching the command back to US standards because it's just easier for us to type the way we're used to.
qwerty is the best thing that happened to computers in an entire century. imagine not just 2-3 ways of doing something but 22 equally popular among the people, it's just madness. The standard is valuable not because it's most convenient or most optimized, but because it standardizes our cooperation, communication and interchangeability of things, people and tools.
From what I heard...The QWERTY Keyboard was made with the intention with the middle row having the most commonly used letters and the less “popular” letters are shifted up or down.
That can't be. Take a look at the Colemak layout for an example of a layout where this is the case, where the middle row consists of a, r, s, t, d, h, n, e, i, and o. Those are much more common letters compared to QWERTY, which places letters like f and j and even ; on the resting positions.
I had to switch sometimes between azerty and qwerty, in a week or so you're 99% adapted, with 1% mistypes , mostly q for a :) . other changes I haven't tried. For dutch i think the q is way to prominent in easy to hit keys on both keyboard layouts. the middle and top line are most easy to reach , so vocals should alway be in or the top, or second line somewhat in my thoughts :) . but you could of course also go totolly out of the current keyboard structures in the 3 letter lines.. Something like this looks hilarious : www.boundlessat.com/core/media/media.nl?id=982503&c=1281905&h=fc13620871e9e74b5ba5
The story I was told behind it was that the keys on type writers were originally set in alphabetical order, and the reason behind mixing the letters up was because people would type too fast and knew the layout so well that they would break typewriters.
That is actually completely untrue. Once you learn the keyboard layout it doesn't matter. It came from testing with telegraph operators who they they thought would be mainly using the typewriters. That key pattern just seem to suit them.
Fascinating about qwerty keyboard is that we arranged it using the name typewriter in one single line. Fun facts about qwerrty is that we can type even were not looking
I think it is because QWERTY is meant to have the more common letters (E, T, N etc.) Located where they were more easily accessible. ABCD places common letters like A away from the central part of the keyboard, where it makes the most sense to place your hands. I think.
My question is, why you didn't talk about azerty keyboards. At least in Portugal I´ve never seen any typewriter that was not azerty. And (even nowadays) it's not that hard to cross paths with classic typewriters.
Os anos 60, em Portugal, sempre foram muito marcados pela influência francesa. Em Portugal é muito dificil encontrar máquinas de escrever com um teclado diferente do Azerty.
Fun fact: The keys on a keyboard are arranged in diagonal columns because original typewriters needed space for the metal levers connecting the keys to the type bar. Technically, modern keyboards don’t require this diagonal arrangement anymore!

I'm actually developing a game, and I had one of my playtesters go to me, and say it was hard to play on his "Azerty keyboard" at the time, I had no idea what that was. Long story short, this was my first game to ever include AZERTY alternate control schemes.... atleast theres something in it. Oh, it's a space shooter / leveling arcade game thingy incase you were wondering.
It's why people switch to other keyboards for languages, and also kinda why QWERTY isn't the best. If I remember right, 'e' is the most used key, yet it is not placed somewhere better. Some people I know (*cough*one*cough*) have switched to DVORAK because, according to them, it lets you type faster. I guess if you're going to invest the time you can switch to another keyboard layout in your settings without buying a new keyboard or even rearranging the key caps. If you want to earn a whole new way of typing. So there's that.
Ender Flight I switched to Dvorak years ago and never looked back, it is SO much better than QWERTY. Whether or not it's actually faster, I can't say, but it certainly doesn't feel any slower, and it's *much* more comfortable and way easier to touch-type with it. Keeping 80% of your keystrokes on home row makes a massive difference. For instance, E is directly under your left middle finger on home row. "The" is right-middle, right-index, left-middle. You don't even have to move anything away from home row to type the most common word in the english language. The only *real* issue with Dvorak is how nobody else uses it. So every time I have to use a computer that isn't mine I'm back to uselessly hunting and pecking on QWERTY lmfao.
3:13 - The 'FLAEIO' keyboard? The 'YUOIE' keyboard? Best I can come up with (sadly). Questions: 1) Does the I and O, double as 1 and 0? 2) Bottom row: What does the secondary symbols on the fifth & ninth keys symbolise (left to right counting)? What's the 10th key? The tripple horizontal dots?
0:08 I doubt that that statistic is correct. Actually Belgium and France have AZERTY. Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland have QWERTZ. Azerbaijan has QÜERTY. Turkmenistan has ÄWERTY. Lithuania has ĄŽERTY. Latvia has ŪGJRMV. Turkey used to have an efficient F-keyboard starting with FGĞIOD, but QWERTY took over due to import keyboards.
It so strange that when typing I know where all the letters, numbers and symbols are located, but when you ask me to recite the keyboard layout I'm lost. Lol
Your fingers know the keyboard.
Yes! I tried it just now

short answer is, QWERTY was chosen by the big typewriting companies which had a monopoly on typewriters so qwerty became the default keyboard. The thing is, even that was never mentioned in the video. This video pretty much only talked about other typewriter layouts.
I love you QWERTY
I thought they were going to actually educate the audience - perhaps talk about the reasons behind the design...the most frequently used English words? I only feel like my preconceived notions of capitalistic greed and market evolution have been reinforced, nothing more...nothing less.
Spaghetti qwerty
...Didn't they just talk about that? The "trust" companies were the monopoly companies
That's pretty much what the video talked about though...
This video didn’t actually tell me anything.
Try again later.
None of the videos in this channel do. They just introduce to a topic that has no answer. And no answer means even they don't have the answer.
dude he answered to question, it's qwerty because the typewriter trust chose it. maybe watch to the end before you decide you learned nothing.
Notice how the title is "How QWERTY conquered keyboards"
and not
"Why letters are arranged on the keyboard the way they are"
If you were expecting an answer with the former, you played yourself.
Usually these types of videos have some weird twist or reasoning why something is the way it is. This is just because a bunch of typewriter manufacturers came together and said "hey let's just use that one" I see where you're coming from

I was hoping he would mention other types of key setting like AZERTY
This video is an explanation of why modern keyboard configuration is QWERTY, if you ever had a question before. At least, I have asked this question and I wonder the reason behind this configuration.
And there, it does explain it to me. One of the reasons I love Vox is because of this, they always catch those hard-to-detect questions and ask them, then explain them.
A huge THANK YOU. I just finished the video feeling kinda dumb and I thought it was me
Thomas Coull yeah it's super spread out and has a lot of information I didn't really need, like they could have gotten the same point across in half the time
*So Basically at this point, People have gotten SO used to qwerty that no one wants to change it and come under fire, so it keeps going on . That's basically it.*
And that's all the reason we need. People have successfully typed billions of useless youtube comments with qwerty - it's working just fine.
A J French people got azerty keywords
summed it up in one. any improvement, marginal or otherwise, when using other layouts would take time and effort to relearn the keyboard along with the fact that if you got used to it and someone else needed to the use the computer, they would be really confused.
Like with the Imperial Units vs the more efficient International System
Or like the decimal system vs the more efficient duodecimal system

At this point, after using the qwerty keyboard since I was a kid, I would never want to even try a different configuration of keys. I can type without looking at the keys now, but it would take me a lifetime to get that good with a new keyboard. Not to mention the fact that I've mastered the slide text on my phone, as well lol..
You can teach yourself after a while. It's just practice. It's no musical instrument which takes actual work to learn.
It's not that hard
yeah I was just about to say! I have ZERO desire to get comfortable with another arrangement of keys

There is no reason to switch from qwerty right now
The reason I know is that the "tz" combination is very common in German, so you can type it in a comfortable motion.

In 1982 when I was a student I took a typing class and learned to touch type. It still is a valuable skill
If, like me, you heard QWERTY was about slowing down typists, there's a surprising amount of literature debunking it. This paper, from 1985, appears to be one of the more influential ones in the surprisingly large field of QWERTY scholarship (and it helped this video a lot).

Vox hi
Never heard of azerty?

but hy tho?
The one video on cnn explains it so much better.
TLDR: the arrangement was set to distance the letters that are usually paired up together
Not sure I got anything out of the video. Was expecting to learn the reason why qwerty is overrated...
They did. The only reason it's almost universal in America is because the biggest manufacturer(s) made them in that format, and typist classes trained for it. Therefore, it's overrated.
But why does it not deserve the high opinion? If there is something more efficient, then qwerty would be overrated, but there are flaws in them all
Until something better comes along qwerty isn't overrated. The video really didn't say much at all except who invented qwerty.
It's all about efficiency - Germans for example use QWERTZ.
And how many computers have chorded steno keyboard? Like learning some exotic language just to learn instead the most usefull one.

I myself have QWERTZ as well, as I live in Europe (Germany).

Same QWERTZ is also used in the balkans
Sometimes I do something out of habit, like tapping my desk.

Vox on the metric system: We should switch to metric because everyone is using it.
Vox on QWERTY: We should have different keyboards because everyone is using QWERTY.
SlicksGaming logic!
SlicksGaming lol
This video doesn't have any conclusion, though. It just explains the history of QWERTY.
He calls it overrated at least 5 times
To be fair, (even though I don't really like Vox that much), there is a difference between the two, since a keyboard layout only affects the person using it.
Hello from DVORAK! Switched a year ago and life is greener on the other side.
Any reason why I should switch? I can type blind with QWERTZ and really fast.
SuperSandro2000 their are added physical benefits, less prone to carpal tunnel, look into ortholinear keyboards as well for added benefits and even ergonomic if you want as much benefits as you can, I currently use the "infinity ergodox" and absolutely love it
Brian na won't buy a new keyboard. I maybe should think about it but I am way to comfort for that and know the old layout way to good.
yeah lul
this video does say anything valid. keyboards are designed this way so that when typing a word, keys are seperated from each other as much as possible
Or, you know, "underrated" and "overrated" are both terms relating popularity to quality rather than how much people know about what they're using
I think the work "overrated" is overrated. People use it all the time to describe things that don't line up perfectly with their understanding.
I was looking for this comment.

Then it was probably made in germany
Yeah, m Germany has weird keyboards, I haven't seen one in like 4 years, that's about when I moved to America
Its not weird, its z instead of y because we often use z and it wouldnt be as smooth to type witht the z at the y spot.
those things when you have QWERTZ keyboard and someone in game says how do is start train?
i say Y and he said... but its not working and i said... try more times...
he still not working...
me OH MY GOD!!! i have QWERTZ keyboard go and press that ZZZZ!
The only reason is that QWERTY sounds cool thats why it caught on!
But azerty also sounds cool ;-;
qwerty is the best thing that happened to computers in an entire century. imagine not just 2-3 ways of doing something but 22 equally popular among the people, it's just madness. The standard is valuable not because it's most convenient or most optimized, but because it standardizes our cooperation, communication and interchangeability of things, people and tools.
“we’re all using it but we don’t know why. That’s the definition of overrated.”
*Uh no it isn’t*
Okay but
AZERTY
From what I heard...The QWERTY Keyboard was made with the intention with the middle row having the most commonly used letters and the less “popular” letters are shifted up or down.
That can't be. Take a look at the Colemak layout for an example of a layout where this is the case, where the middle row consists of a, r, s, t, d, h, n, e, i, and o. Those are much more common letters compared to QWERTY, which places letters like f and j and even ; on the resting positions.
I remember reading somewhere that a guy called Qwert Yuiop invented the modern typewriter and left his name on it. And I actually believed it lol
Using Dvorak since 2010 because it is the best.
Dvorak since 2005 here - no more wrist pain as back then, and faster speeds within a month or two. ^^ Good choice!

The L is in a bad location
My boyfriend uses it as well, but on a qwerty keyboard. I don't get how he doesn't get confused
If the qwerty keyboard gets changed i will lose my typing speed.
Is there something better we can change it to?
I had to switch sometimes between azerty and qwerty, in a week or so you're 99% adapted, with 1% mistypes , mostly q for a :) .
other changes I haven't tried. For dutch i think the q is way to prominent in easy to hit keys on both keyboard layouts.
the middle and top line are most easy to reach , so vocals should alway be in or the top, or second line somewhat in my thoughts :) . but you could of course also go totolly out of the current keyboard structures in the 3 letter lines..
Something like this looks hilarious :

lmao rawr xd
I type this 147 wpm lolz
The story I was told behind it was that the keys on type writers were originally set in alphabetical order, and the reason behind mixing the letters up was because people would type too fast and knew the layout so well that they would break typewriters.
same
That is actually completely untrue.
That's all fine, but why not just a simple ABCD
Right?
I think it is because QWERTY is meant to have the more common letters (E, T, N etc.) Located where they were more easily accessible. ABCD places common letters like A away from the central part of the keyboard, where it makes the most sense to place your hands.
I think.
Except A is to my left, B is down the bottom in the centre, C is towards my left, D is above it.
It doesn't ACTUALLY make sense.
.
Because you can't touch type (touch typing means typing without seeing the keyboard the j and f have dashes on them )
My question is, why you didn't talk about azerty keyboards. At least in Portugal I´ve never seen any typewriter that was not azerty. And (even nowadays) it's not that hard to cross paths with classic typewriters.
In France, our keyboard are still azerty !
Querty is way more popular. Azerty and qwertzu keyboards are not used as much.
Well yes but they talked about a bunch other keyboards. I would expect azerty would be one of the most populars right after querty.
Os anos 60, em Portugal, sempre foram muito marcados pela influência francesa. Em Portugal é muito dificil encontrar máquinas de escrever com um teclado diferente do Azerty.
I have azerty on my phone's keyboard but I always use quertz
qwertz is real (German Layout)
TimTM In czech we have QWERTZ too
Fun fact: The keys on a keyboard are arranged in diagonal columns because original typewriters needed space for the metal levers connecting the keys to the type bar.

When I learned to type in 5th grade they told us that the keys were arranged to put the most frequently used keys together.
I changed this comment so nobody knows why i have 69 likes
Kingcookie Video’s lol rip
Just change your settings in your pc
so is it zqsd? or do you have to put your fingers in different places to still have the letters wasd?
Im french and i got a azerty keyboard ^^ but when i play an English/USA game and the controls can't be definited i need to switch :/
3:13 - The 'FLAEIO' keyboard? The 'YUOIE' keyboard? Best I can come up with (sadly).
Questions:
1) Does the I and O, double as 1 and 0?
