    It is good to know we can add the wastes from our wine and beer brewing to our compost. I was worried that the residual alcohol in it would be bad for the compost.

    if you want to increase the microbiology of your raised beds, then put on a cover of woodchips. mycos cannot establish as well unless there is a soil interface cover. If you encourage hyphae to develop and maintain, then you dont have to fertilize since the hyphae can pull in nutrients to your plants from hundreds of yards away.

    @Matt Powers, So this is different from 'no-dig' from Charles Dowding? When Dr. Ingham talked about adding compost to the one section, I don't think it was 4-6 inches of compost on top or even 2 inches, just a much smaller amount. Perhaps she even mixed it in a bit, rather on 'on top'?

    This may be splitting hair but could the “nasty compaction” be cementation instead? There is a difference! I’d be interested to see if the growth below 4” performs differently under each of the conditions; cemented soils vs compacted.

    Great video! I am double digging my beds now but I think I am going to deep about 2 feet lol. Not too deep but maybe not necessary what do u think?

      I think it does more harm than good - you can broadfork it to loosen it that deep while inject and soaking in compost tea filled with life and that will give you better soil structure faster.

    Why is there a nasty compaction layer in the soil in this place?

    • @mattpowers8930
      @mattpowers8930 7 років тому

      The prior owners sprayed is why.

    • @Ula-Ka

      So just spraying is enough to cause nasty compaction, without tilling? How does it work? Thanks!

      Well analyze it - what does a biocide do? It kills life - what makes soil structure and holds soil nutrients in the top 6" where almost all fertility is found? Bacteria and Fungi. When you kill bacteria and fungi you also kill most of your beneficial nematodes, microarthropods, and protozoa. Without all trophic layers, you lose cycling as well. Because you are spraying repeatedly a layer builds up below the first few inches of soil, a moribund layer. -Matt Powers

      Thanks. I've now seen what it looks like in a Gabe Brown presentation. He showed long time no-till, but heavily sprayed soil and it did not look good at all.

      that's what happened to these fields. The folks just sprayed them - weren't cultivating them at all - just round up junkies.
