I learned bikes early, as a kid. But, there was time (1997 or so) I was living in a homeless shelter with no money. I went to a bike shop and they gave me one out of their scrap pile. Did it again, and fixed up the first one. I still have and use it today. I appreciate guys like you.

@Alberto Alfredo I do care, but not in the way you think. Hacking someone else's cookie jar does not make you more self-sufficient or give you something of your own to "bring to the table". I don't know why you'd brag about this, and I don't know why you posted it as a reply my comment. But, if there's something you'd like to get off your chest/shoulders, I'm willing to talk.

Fixing my bikes when I was a kid taught me a lot about myself and others around me.

I love this. I am a bad ass bike fixer. For decades I chose NOT to participate in the internal combustion model of life. Out of necessity I taught my self to fix bicycles. I am damn good at it. Fast? No, but effective. I am crying because I never realized how important it was that I taught myself those skills.

my landlord needs to watch this. maybe then he won't be complaining about the dozen or so bikes that my neighbor and I have behind the garage.
broken bikes are my favorite thing to find around town (besides money on the ground).
    :)

I like that you told us about the dog experiment. To me a thought came to mind about voting. For decades the media has led many of us to think that our vote doesn't count, but in reality we know that isn't true.
While political posturing isn't a simple matter, don't be misled into thinking that just because your choice of candidate may not have won in some past election, that your vote may not matter in some future election.

Where can we learn more about starting a bicycle collective in our area?

    • @Rainaman-

Google, but most importantly try to communicate with local government, they might give free space or cheap space to rent. Try to get additional "fancy" tools from different grant programs. Above all have motivated team.

Wow! I really *do* hope they are not trying to turn people into the next cheating Lance Arsehole. What a strange idea of a role model to choose. But what a great idea is bike upscaling. The bike is such an amazing machine what a satisfying feeling it is to go on a bike tour and know, with a some selected simple tools you have put together and a few spare bits you can go forever and fix whatever small problems you may have, on the spot, in a few minutes , at the side of the road if need be. That really is independent travel. Never want to stop!
