I hopped in here to say basically what @@secondhandrc7024said. In addition, with more torque, the truck has the beef to overcome the effects of air resistance and power lost to the friction between the tires and road.
Yep. You're gonna be seeing all the measured wheelspeed with the brushless system, but the brushed is definitely not reaching that rpm in the real world. Really showcases the differences between brushed and brushless
that and also the fact that the thing has open diffs and there's probably a bit of difference between left and right wheel when it's just sitting there unloaded.
Awesome. The Gorgon is one of my favorites. It’s super durable, cheap, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive, even stock. It takes me back to when I was a kid in the 80’s with my Tamiya RC cars we had, like the lunchbox and monster beetle.
I’m 44yo, I’m so agree………. The Gorgon is exactly that !! ARRMA got all my respect for this completely GENIUS model…..🙏 The look, the chassis design who is very original and so well executed in every aspects, the plastics quality, the gears design and quality, the pricing………. This Gorgon is an INSTANT CLASSIC, we will remember it for years in the RC Cars History. LOVE IT !!!!!! Can’t wait to see the next Gorgon Grom, the Warhead Grom, the Mojave 6S V3……… ARRMA is on fire and this is very good for us and the Hobby !!
We already have one of these tucked away for my boy's 5th birthday next month. He has an idea it's coming and he's super excited. I have the ~$100 Spektrum brushless system ready to be put in but now you got me second guessing it. His Traxxas Bigfoot has the same system and it's his favorite wheelie-for-distance RC but I really want the Gorgon to take that throne.
Couldn't it be that is was faster because the brushless setup has more torque? Unloaded RPM doesn't really tell you much in this case I think. You could put some fiddly motor in there that is able to generate crazy RPMS without load, but goes nowhere once you put the truck on its wheels (well, theoretically, but you get the idea right?)
Hot racing makes a motor spacer so you do not have to modify the chassis. Then you can run a shorter motor. I ran the spacer with mine. And you can get a motor plate for the motor screws for strength for a brushless motor.
Man, that _Timex_ and those NiMh packs take me back, 80's style, my guy. Maybe we need to take a new brushless RC, and retro-convert it to 80's tech with a 540 motor and a Novak ESC. Better yet, a Tamiya wiper mechanical speed controller and resistor (hotter than the surface of the sun)!
I bought the cheaper RTR without the battery and charger for my 6yo, but I really wanted to build it with him so I took it apart and bagged everything according to the manual that I printed online before giving it to him 😅 Put in an old 3600kv SCT motor/ESC, 30k diff fluid and 40wt shock fluid from the get-go. He loves it! It flies and handles surprisingly well!
Coincidentally I've upgraded FTX vantage to brushless a few weeks ago. Brushed motor gave a ghost after a two months. Had a similar problem too, trying to fit ESC, eventually managed...sideways...Not ideal but works fine: a rocket on wheels now. My kid crashed it quite badly 8) Got spare plastics today
What a cool video, the Gorgon is such a good looking truck. I was put off simply because it is a step back from the Corally and Arrma models I have but 50MPH!!!! My 5 year old loves the Big Rock but he loves the look of this Gorgon so maybe. I will wait to see part 2. By the way he Dons his Tomley T shirt whenever we go RC bashing 😁
Brushless Has more torque so under the resistence of pushing the car it'll reach a higher wheel speed then a brushed motor that has to rev and lacks the torque so it can't achieve as high a wheel speed under resistance.
Had same issue with my Vantage. I made it fit though without any chassis modifications. Just clever placement and wire routing. It's very tight though regarding the ESC battery wires and the drive shaft.
Just a couple quick clarifications that Max 10 g2 that was in there from hobbywing can also do 4s and you can get it with a 3660 can motor so you don't have to hack the chassis
Nothing but joy when I get to my boring old job, sit down with some hot coffee and my breakfast to find what? A NEW VIDEO FROM PHIL. Oh happy days! Love the new video buddy. Love from the US.
Great video that. I’m going to pickup one of those rpm measuring devices. Great learning idea for kids. Can try and calc expected rpm from motor and gearboxes and then see real rpm ! Thanks for the idea
The Gorgon is a very solid rig. I’m impressed! Haven’t put brushless in mine. Having too much fun on the stick system. However, if I do, I’ll put a 550 brushless motor in to try and avoid modding the chassis. For 540 brushless, the Tamiya TBL motors probably would be a good choice though.
🛻 4S brushed combos are also very fun (if you know what you are doing😉) and relatively cheap. Tried this a couple weeks ago with some 1/10 bash solid axle megatruck build.... awesome 😍 results, both smooth and speed🥳
while the esc is rated for 3-4s, the 7700kv motor is only rated for 2s. you can run the 7700 on 3s for a bit but it will get hot and possibly explode the rotor. 4s WILL grenade the motor.
i love my brushless Gorgon, this thing is nuts! It will do standing wheelies from a rolling start everytime. It handles really well for a cheap RTR too. I do want to lock the diffs up a bit though, probably some better tires too
You need a 3660 motor with high rpm, like 4000kv. Or 3200kv but with a big pinion. And 3s ^^ Quickrun 120a or stock arrma 3s electronics. My brushless Gorgon is so much fun. its wild.
Funny thing, brushless V brushed. I'm going through this with my little toy racing car at the minute. The first thing I've had to do is gear it right up because the brushed motors hated being loaded whereas the brushless one loves it. I've still got to gear it up more according to the club blokes. Brushed motor revs well, no doubt. Killed a few of them in the last couple of months though and a cheap Justock 17.5T came up so i thought why not. Cool video, looking forward to part 2 🙂
I brought the vantage brushless years ago only went over some tiny jumps about 3 of them and the front end snapped the jumps was only a foot high bit of w part glue fixed that wasn’t a bad car apart from that was an ok toy
Have the hobbywing 10bl120 4s combo in my gorgon! Thing freaking cooks down the road! I built mine in about 30 minutes no problem! Come on Phil. You need a 3660 motor so the wires don't hit!
Now I wanna see how it bashes. I had tons of fun with my 2wd stampede, but I’d love to switch to something that doesn’t need to be built completely out of aftermarket upgrade parts to be durable.
What an enjoyable video this was! 👍🏻 For what I saw on other videos it handles brushless pretty well. It looks very stable. I think it actually looks like it handles better than some 4wd systems out there.
Fantastic job, Phil! This Gorgon is crazy! 😂 About the RPM, that was without load. In other words, it was without the weight of the car and so on. So, in theory, the brushed motor should be faster with a much lighter car... But, again, in theory! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
We put a 3900kv combo out of an arrma vendetta in ours. It's plenty fast on 2s with a 16t and the motor stays cool so it has plenty of speed to go. Ill have to throw the gps on it. It also fits the chassis without modification. Truck takes it well too. Haven't tried 3s yet 😅
The vantage! I love that thing, been Speedrunning it! One of the best value cars you can buy! But a pain to work with 😂 Gorgons looking solid at speed! Looking forward to part 2 🎉
Funny I just put a traxxas vlx3s system in my gorgon only mods needed was longer screws forthe esc and take a small amount of chassis outfox the battery plug
not to be THAT guy (when aren't I? haha) when you up the torque of the motor that means you can also change the pinion/gear ratio to adapt to the more torque. You proved this by wheelieing it easily. They probably used a pinion that was "ok" for torque and "ok" for top speed for a brushless motor. When you converted, you upped the "power" but didn't make full use of that power. That's where I think the engineers are missing the boat on Evs. Sure they give you instant torque and HP but once you get up to speed, they stall out. They just won't spin any faster. What they need to start doing is adding a 2nd gear so the motor is always running at peak efficiency. SO when you're just cruising along, engine isn't taxed BUT it also isn't using excess electricity.
That conversion video still holds up nicely though, used that one to convert my hbx 2996a to a hobbywing sensored motor. With the help of your video it was a breeze!
free spinning with no load the low torque motor may be faster but loaded it bogs down way more than the strong motor. To double your top speed you need like 4 or 8 times the power because air. Well I know putting my castle sct set in my lunchbox was going to be crazy and yes a bit much for a lunchbox
Enjoyed the video! That copperhead esc is 4S capable but the KV is too high on that motor to run anything higher than 2S. I'm sure it would be fine once but it will definitely get hot especially if you run it off-road during full summer heat.
Not sure if the 7700 kv motor can take the 3s let alone the 4s. I had an older castle creations 1st gen sidewinder and a sensorless 7700kv castle motor in a 2wd rustler. It was stupid fast on 2s. Also the box the motor came in said 2s only.
It's faster because the brushless system Isn't being SLOWED DOWN as much under load, so even though it's not hitting as high an rpm it's delivering more power doing it, this means you could use a higher KV motor or gear it to get more speed.
You made me like the Gorgon!! I’ve been comfortable disliking this truck since it came out. Then here you go making it look incredibly awesome with that paint job… you make it go 50 mph(81 kph for all you Brits) on freakin’ 2s!! 3-4s are going to blow my mind 💨!! Darn you Phil, lol! Let me go get some tickets and see if I can win this truck🤔… I haven’t had any luck buying tickets, but here I go again.
Agree with others that your unloaded wheel rpm has little to do with land speed of the car. That’s all about gearing and voltage, but you’re comparing apples to oranges. Under load, the lipo voltage and brushless power output won’t sag nearly as much as brushed with NiMh.
Built in an hour by a very experienced RC UA-camr. What, 3 times longer by the first timers the Gorgon is geared at? Hand a kit to a 10 year old who’s never done RC. Now that’s a video!!! 😀
You have to consider that when the size of tire balloon, the outer diameter of the tire is larger. If the motor can keep the torque, the speed in an outer diameter is greater, therefore the car speed increases as well.
I remembered school lessons on what they called then "physic" and thought of the "radial speed" if that is still a thing 😅 . As you can see your videos make me wonder more on engineering :D
My gorgon has burnt through 2 original brushed motors after about 7-8 battery runs, really frustrating. I can't really work out what brushless set I actually need to get as most seem to be from china etc. Not interested in going into Lipos though as not risking fires :(
I believe you will find that the brushless motor handle more TRQ, thusly even with a lower wheel speed ont he table, when under load the brushed setup doesn't have enough TRQ to be quicker where as the Brushless setup can deliver the TRQ to get the speed when under load. I believe you issue can be resolved by questioning the TRQ delivery of those motors mate. Free spinning and wheel speed on jack stands in only 1/4 of the story. Battery power delivery, ESC power delivery, motor TRQ and wire resistance al play a part in "under load running". IMHO of course.
Is there any part made to secure the motor mesh on the Gorgon? The mesh is pretty easy to disrupt with its stock setup and I don’t feel like stripping out the holes in my motor tightening it down too much 😅😂
I've made an experiment to "muscle up" a crawler chassis with Fusion 6s combo and at the first run after showing 67 mph it fell apart, and I wasn't able to find half of the parts flown away somewhere in the neibhourhood :(
If you want to move weight, need some torque. If you only want wheel speed, drone motors might be the way to go. Won't move gorgon much, but the wheels will spin 😅
I liked mine at first but i did a spektrum 3900kv motor and 85a esc. It was fun but jumping it sucked. With the torque from the motor i assumed it made it lean left off of jumps a lot. And land funny. When it would jump good it was fun but it wasnt often. Sold mine fully upgraded on Ebay for $200 and bought a Losi LMT.
Never heard of that problem. I have the 100a 4000kv spektrum in mine and it jumps insanely good. Effortless backflips on 3s. Crazy how different folks can experience similar circumstances. My LMT is the last rig I grab to go bash. Seems like it breaks or bends just thinking about jumping. It barely gets driven because it was gonna cost a much as the entire truck just for upgraded axles. I love having a LMT but don't care to drive it much at all.
Yea it just depends on how you drive. I bash them but am good at driving them too. Been at it for over 20 years. I'm hard on them and all my trucks and cars still look new. But I sold all the 10th scale trucks and went 1/6th scale and 5th scale. All the arrmas are gone and everything I have is pretty much losi. I'm more into the scale driving aspect over bashing anymore. Sending cars over a house isn't fun to me anymore.
Could of been too because of the size of motor I had which weighed a lot and the motor spacer. The motor stuck out of the chassis a decent amount to that side. But the motor was a torque monster too. 5mm shaft motors make more torque.
Not gunna lie if you lived closer aka in my state lol we would be best friends. I felt that excitement and that energy when your was hitting 50 mph on 2s. Absolute gold! That right there is what it’s about!!!!
haha so, when doing a brushless upgrade, take the physical dimensions and properties of the ESC and motor into account :D is a bit naff that the gorgon doesn't take a 3650
Soon as you put load on the brushed motor it kills the rpm, seen a guy that has done 80mph with the gorgon. Running a cheapo £20 Goolrc 3660 - 3800kv on 6s, running Hoons wheels.
I mean I notched mine out and it’s been fine 🤷♂️ it’s taken a few pretty bad spills as well. Granted I didn’t WANT to cut into the chassis but I preferred the motor can to be within the chassis footprint
Put the tape on the outside edge of the tire when you test rpms on the bench. when the tire expands at high speed it changes the gear ratio. taller tires give you a higher gear.
@@jasonbecker4997 It sure does, your measuring how fast the dot spins. The further from the center you move it the longer it takes to make one revolution. If you have the same rpm reading when the tire is ballooned as you when it isn't, it should in theory have a higher top speed
Win this CRAZY Gorgon + Cash: raffall.com/356181/enter-raffle-to-win-a-crazy-arrma-gorgon-hosted-by-phil-harrison
cool video btw my 1st rc was a Tamiya Grasshopper 1984model bought in 87
wheel speed was unloaded, motors theoretical max speed is down to back emf voltage. so yes a lower speed unloaded motor with more power can be faster.
Was thinking this when he got more speed!! Brushless runs much smoother through the powerband as well.
I hopped in here to say basically what @@secondhandrc7024said.
In addition, with more torque, the truck has the beef to overcome the effects of air resistance and power lost to the friction between the tires and road.

The brushless system doesn't get bogged down by a load as much as a brushed one does.
Couldn't it be that is was faster because the brushless setup has more torque?
Unloaded RPM doesn't really tell you much in this case I think.

Does the pinion reach okay?
@TomleyRC it did with the motor I used. I used a spektrum 3900kv motor with 5mm shaft. Same as what's used in the vendetta or small infraction.
Ive built 2 brushless gorgons and they both run 20t pinions and 2s is way faster than stock so u might just to get a bigger pinion
Nice. I Got to try out the copper head system out. I’m stuck on hobby wing
It’s a decent system. And they have plenty of motor options
That made me chuckle!! 😂
I got the old an transmitter and receiver with crystals!!! Old servos and a brushed stock traxxas cat motor to donate to the build!!😁😜🤙🏼
I do have a video planned that may be just what you are looking for 😅
I bought the cheaper RTR without the battery and charger for my 6yo, but I really wanted to build it with him so I took it apart and bagged everything according to the manual that I printed online before giving it to him 😅 Put in an old 3600kv SCT motor/ESC, 30k diff fluid and 40wt shock fluid from the get-go. This one’s only rated to 3s. I think the SCT one is 4s
This is an excellent video. The Gorgon keeps proving it's one of the best releases of last year.
Nothing but joy when I get to my boring old job, sit down with some hot coffee and my breakfast to find what? A NEW VIDEO FROM PHIL. Oh happy days! Love the new video buddy. Love from the US.
You’re welcome dude, hope you enjoyed your breakfast 😇
Great video that. I’m going to pickup one of those rpm measuring devices. Great learning idea for kids. Can try and calc expected rpm from motor and gearboxes and then see real rpm ! Thanks for the idea
Radio Link esc keep it brushed . If you pop the motor a decent one is 2p . For 40 bucks you can run it 4s BRUSHED and beat it up proper and for cheap
The Gorgon is a very solid rig. I’m impressed! Haven’t put brushless in mine. Having too much fun on the stick system. However, if I do, I’ll put a 550 brushless motor in to try and avoid modding the chassis. For 540 brushless, the Tamiya TBL motors probably would be a good choice though.

great build, mate! you did it in less than 1 hour because you are awesome! it would have taken me a whole day! cheers!
More companies should offer RTA that are just rollers. I don't need more transmitters!!!
I agree
The differential could be giving you the off rpm reading. More power could be causing it to slip and favor one side
Funny thing, brushless V brushed. I'm going through this with my little toy racing car at the minute. absolutely insane looking! love the paint job...
That's just part of the wonders of Nature. It makes your RCs go faster!
Haha you're laugh throughout the video about this crazy setup is just epic. Thanks, you made me smile 😁
Love the custom paint scheme, Arrma should do a special edition of that, looking forward to part 2
Nice work Phil. That Gorgon is quite something when (and I say this all the time) you think about what beginner RC's were like too many decades back.
I brought the vantage brushless years ago only went over some tiny jumps about 3 of them and the front end snapped the jumps was only a foot high bit of w part glue fixed that wasn’t a bad car apart from that was an ok toy

Can't wait the part 2! Love your vids.
If you fit brushless combo can you use the 2in 1 esc as receiver only
I'm planning on using that combo in a Tamiya BBX, very curious to see how the motor handles 3s.
But a pain to work with 😂
Gorgons looking solid at speed!
Looking forward to part 2 🎉
You had me on the edge of my seat during the build!!! I knew you could do it!!!😂😂👍👍👍👍👍👍
I put a 6500kv motor from a losi drag car in mine and it’s so much fun on 2s, great build love to see the comparisons🔥🔥🔥
Funny I just put a traxxas vlx3s system in my gorgon only mods needed was longer screws forthe esc and take a small amount of chassis outfox the battery plug

Would the 3s system from the infraction be a simple bolt-in upgrade? I see myself getting a 4s setup pretty soon.
What's the square ish reflection on the cam footage on the outside run?
I’d fly over just to hang out and run RC’s all day! Awesome video once again!
🎉my 8s Gorgon is ridiculous 😂
Not sure if the 7700 kv motor can take the 3s let alone the 4s. I had an older castle creations 1st gen sidewinder and a sensorless 7700kv castle motor in a 2wd rustler. It was stupid fast on 2s. Also the box the motor came in said 2s only.
Man thats a good damn speed! 50mph on 2s is craaaazy! Can’t wait for part two!
Yeah, mad!
2:16 oooh I have always wanted that watch.
Awesome project I can't wait to see part 2
Me too haha
It's faster because the brushless system Isn't being SLOWED DOWN as much under load, so even though it's not hitting as high an rpm it's delivering more power doing it, this means you could use a higher KV motor or gear it to get more speed.
no voltage drop. for speed. 3660 or 3665. and go with like 4200kv. and over volt it. like 6S.
I put a brushless system in my Traxxas Summit, it does 50 on 4s battery and blew the rear diff, crazy what you can do ain't it.😊😊😊
I'm actually very tempted to try and put in to win this... damn you sir!!! :D So sick!
ARRMA needs to make the Gorgon 4WD. Happy RC’ing Y’all!!!
These are such good bashers for fun! The body of ours are basically 50% duct tape, apart from that no issues!
Yes, handles the power well
From what I’ve seen the record to beat is 80mph for the Gorgon. 6s setup. 50 mph on 2S is so good though!
You made me like the Gorgon!! I’ve been comfortable disliking this truck since it came out. Yes, I kinda realised that whilst editing. Makes sense
Wow that was awesome tomely your still the only one I watch in rc

You have to consider that when the size of tire balloon, the outer diameter of the tire is larger. If the motor can keep the torque, the speed in an outer diameter is greater, therefore the car speed increases as well.
The outer speed isn’t faster, it just travels further for the same amount of rotations.. hence the bigger the wheels the faster the speed usually
I remembered school lessons on what they called then "physic" and thought of the "radial speed" if that is still a thing 😅 .
As you can see your videos make me wonder more on engineering :D
Der gorgon ist ein echt cooles Fahrzeug vorallen mit dieser heftigen 7700 kv kombo 🤩😍👍🏻
My gorgon has burnt through 2 original brushed motors after about 7-8 battery runs, really frustrating. I can't really work out what brushless set I actually need to get as most seem to be from china etc. Not interested in going into Lipos though as not risking fires :(
Under load the brushed slowed down while brushless kept full rpm
I believe you will find that the brushless motor handle more TRQ, thusly even with a lower wheel speed ont he table, when under load the brushed setup doesn't have enough TRQ to be quicker where as the Brushless setup can deliver the TRQ to get the speed when under load. I believe you issue can be resolved by questioning the TRQ delivery of those motors mate. Free spinning and wheel speed on jack stands in only 1/4 of the story. Battery power delivery, ESC power delivery, motor TRQ and wire resistance al play a part in "under load running". IMHO of course.
The 7700kv motor is only rated for 2s lipo. A fully charged 4s battery would push that motor to about 130,000 rpm. Wear goggles when you try it!
Yes… sounds like it’s gonna be fun 🙃
what u use for car speed tracking ?
Is there any part made to secure the motor mesh on the Gorgon? The mesh is pretty easy to disrupt with its stock setup and I don’t feel like stripping out the holes in my motor tightening it down too much 😅😂
I've made an experiment to "muscle up" a crawler chassis with Fusion 6s combo and at the first run after showing 67 mph it fell apart, and I wasn't able to find half of the parts flown away somewhere in the neibhourhood :(
That was like building Legos
If you want to move weight, need some torque. If you only want wheel speed, drone motors might be the way to go. Won't move gorgon much, but the wheels will spin 😅
Haha
Man. This thing needs like a VW bus shell or an Astro van, paint it up as the Yeetmobile
Gorgon got the zoomies! Love that paint job you made 😍
Not gunna lie if you lived closer aka in my state lol we would be best friends. I felt that excitement and that energy when your was hitting 50 mph on 2s. Absolute gold! That right there is what it’s about!!!!
I want a1/10 scale hard body keep Cherokee body with your team colors that would look sick I love the color scheme
haha so, when doing a brushless upgrade, take the physical dimensions and properties of the ESC and motor into account :D
is a bit naff that the gorgon doesn't take a 3650
I feel a Gorgon speed run build coming on for Rossa , Phil !
Haha, maybe!
fun video that, looking forward to part 2 👍🐿
Love stock gorgon, but brushless its the way 😂
Haha… yes
You didn't factor resistance in. Mystery solved. More torque from the brushless. You'd need to measure the rpm under load to prove me wrong...
Going the all the same with my new gorgon, what a super fun truck, max 10 w spektrum 4s in mine. New purple body otw. The wife stole my gorgon 😅
Love that new body
Soon as you put load on the brushed motor it kills the rpm, seen a guy that has done 80mph with the gorgon. Running a cheapo £20 Goolrc 3660 - 3800kv on 6s, running Hoons wheels.
The brushed motor doesn't have the power to reach max rpm when under load.
Hey kids don't hack the chassis ,it's weak ,it needs all its beef to survive ,just buy a 3680 and you've no wire problems
I mean I notched mine out and it’s been fine 🤷♂️ it’s taken a few pretty bad spills as well. Granted I didn’t WANT to cut into the chassis but I preferred the motor can to be within the chassis footprint
Put the tape on the outside edge of the tire when you test rpms on the bench. when the tire expands at high speed it changes
the gear ratio. taller tires give you a higher gear.
Wouldn’t change rpm though. The whole tire turns one time per revolution.
@@jasonbecker4997 It sure does, your measuring how fast the dot spins. The further from the center you move it the longer it takes to make one revolution.
If you have the same rpm reading when the tire is ballooned as you when it isn't, it should in theory have a higher top speed
Rpm isn’t how fast the dot moves, it’s how many times it goes around.
Rpm and speed aren’t the same thing.
@@jasonbecker4997 Whatever
the further you move the dot from the center the longer it will take to make one revolution
