an old member of our club passed away recently and Nigel was asked how much it would cost for him to ref the memorial game. he replied saying he'd do it for free. Great man

Kudos to Alex for a fantastic interview and James for listening and not interrupting. Nigel Owens appears to be one of the most likeable people in the world and has also made it to the top of his profession. What a man! My lad qualified as a referee; I'll make sure he sees this - should raise a smile.

As an American, I know very little about rugby, although I'm trying to learn. Stumbled upon some UA-cam videos of Nigel being interviewed and refereeing games. So great to hear him describe his life on and off the field of play. Seems like a man with a lot of class and integrity. I'm glad he's found happiness in his life. No doubt his mom would be very proud of him.
best way to learn rugby is to watch rugby. you'll enjoy it much more once you understand it

@@lantom25 You should try and get involved with one of the clubs in your area. They will really appreciate it. Club rugby is the purest form of the game so you might enjoy it
Absolutely hands down, one of the greatest characters of the game. A credit to the sport and very refreshing to see someone who wasn't born with a silver spoon in their mouth being such a prominent figure in the sport. Fingers crossed he makes it to 200 Tests!
How good when a rugby show makes you cry, laugh, and remember some classic games or rivalries.
Absolute legend! It will be a sad day when he hangs up his whistle. His comment about Bill Maclaren also resonates, I still miss that Scottish legends commentary!
No words, Nigel is an absolute legend, I listen to compilations of him refereeing all the time. Utmost respect for him as a professional and as a human being for the journey he has had to travel as a person.

Wonderful, thank you. I played for a small club in England in the late 1980's. We had a player who had the courage to come out. The club couldn't accept him even though he and his brother had played there as kids. Ill never forget that and am thankful that those days are largely behind us. Rugby is a game for everyone.
What a legend Nigel is... I can watch him refereeing all day... but listen to him all day too... knowing details of matches he refereed and his life story... a real pleasure to hear him talk about it... what a great man he is 🙌🏼

This is one of the coolest epis ever with one of the best refs and most genuine gents of the game.
I was lucky that as an American, I was exposed to our game early, and Mr. Owens will go down as one of the best refs in rugby, period. The epitome of command and respect. We need more like this in the world.

I watch Rugby passively and enjoy it, but I don't really understand the rules as well as I'd like to, but I love Nigel Owens' refereeing, not just from the perspective of Rugby, but Sport more broadly. I'm a football referee (or so I try to claim) but I think I'd love to be able to adopt some of the mannerisms of Nigel Owens. He's been an incredible influence not only in Rugby but across sporting officiating. You can type "Rugby Referee" and you get Nigel Owens, but you can type just "referee", and he still pops up alongside Mike Dean for football.
